Frost forms when temperatures drop to or near freezing (32°F/0°C) during clear, calm overnight conditions, particularly in low-lying and rural areas where cold air pools. Cold fronts bring cooler temperatures and can create conditions favorable for frost formation, especially when cloud cover clears and light winds take over, allowing radiational cooling to occur.

Frost Possible Tonight & Saturday MorningAdded:
Hi everybody, I'm first 105 meteorologist Melissa Meter here. It is just after 7:00 p.m. It is 7:06 out there. We've had some spotty showers and rumbles in the forecast for this evening, probably for probably another 30 minutes to about an hour and then we are expecting colder conditions to take over with the potential for frost. So, we're going to talk a little bit about tonight, the frost potential and then what to expect over the weekend. So, let's get right into it and here's what we're looking at for the next couple of days. This evening, a spotty shower is out there, maybe an isolated rumble of thunder. We're going to take a look at radar, but you're going to see most of the showers have pushed out south of I-70 and along our southern border. However, that shower and thunderstorm activity is coming with the cold front. That cold front will cool us down and then we are looking at Friday and Saturday morning with the potential for frost in the area. So, here's a look at what we've got going on out there right now. The front draped over Kansas City as we speak and then off towards our south, it has initiated some rain and rumbles.
Have maybe only seen a few kind of lightning strikes come out of this.
Looks like it's kind of in portions just crossing over to Henry County. We'll zoom in a little bit closer here, but that front will cause us to be a little bit cooler. Keep in mind as we go into tomorrow and then really tomorrow morning, I should say, and then into Saturday morning, too. So, let's zoom in a little bit closer, kind of diagnose what's going on here on radar.
In our southeastern counties, Pettis County, some rumbles moving through your area.
I'm going to zoom in real close.
Some thunderstorm activity, a few lightning strikes crossing over Highway 65.
And then Leeton as well, just going to be moving into your area for some rain and thunderstorms, too.
Overall, this is pretty spatially small.
These storms are small and they may drop, you know, a quick tenth of an inch with a downpour, but otherwise, we're not looking at much.
Garden City maybe seeing some thunderstorm activity and then on the other side of 49, by other side I mean the western side. And then we move over and we're looking at La Cygne crossing over 69 moving into Amoret. A thunderstorm moving there and then off towards the very southeastern counties, we're looking at Anderson County on the southwestern side or southeastern side, just some light rain showers. So, once again, this is kind of what it looks like across the area. Just along our southern counties, you've got maybe another 30 minutes to an hour before they move out.
So, here we are at 7:00 moving out of the area and then by 8:00 we should be primarily dry, maybe one lone shower holds on until about 9:00, but partly cloudy skies are expected eventually after 9:00 and then into the overnight, we will see clearing skies.
But here for the metro, still a little bit of that cloud cover out there right now as you could see, but we got some sunshine.
And temperatures will be in the mid-50s by 9:00 and then into the upper 40s by 1:00 a.m. We will see temperatures pretty much drop off quickly when cloud cover moves out as well as light winds taking over. That's when we start to get to the 30s for tomorrow morning. We'll be between 35 and 40° to start off your Friday morning.
That is much cooler than we usually are by about 10° now. So, I do think that Friday morning we see more widespread 30s versus Saturday.
However, for most of us on Saturday along and north of I-70, it will be colder.
So, keep that in mind, but areas of patchy frost are going to be on the table and make sure you're using your kind of time this evening if you're worried about any sensitive plants to cover them up and or take them inside. We go through the morning hours on Friday and we will see sunshine. Temperatures don't make it into the low 50s until 10:00, so you will need a little bit of a jacket tomorrow and honestly, temperatures will only make it into the low 60s tomorrow afternoon. So, we'll make it around 59 by noon and then 61 will be your high temperature on Friday. It'll be a sunny day. A rogue sprinkle can't be ruled out between about 2:00 and 6:00. We'll kind of walk through that here in just a second.
Here's a look at that rogue sprinkle possible between about 2:00 and 6:00 p.m. The upper levels are pretty dry, so we do expect not a whole lot to be hitting the ground. If it does, it's expected to be light. So, as you can see, there's those light sprinkles that move through between about 2:00 and 6:00 and then they're out of the area.
So, that's kind of a look at Friday and then we've got the day from the upper 30s at 7:00 to the upper 40s at 9:00 and 60s for majority of the day. Light wind 5 to 10 mph. So, should be a fairly nice day.
It's just cooler than what we usually are for this type of year. So, as an overarching view, here's what the next 7 days kind of looks like. Friday and Saturday bring cold mornings. Frost will be possible. We then get into Sunday and it is much warmer. The upper 70s return.
We continue that warm trend into Monday and Tuesday. However, Monday and Tuesday bring our next best chance for rain and thunderstorm activity. Your Friday morning will be in the upper 30s. Your Saturday morning will be colder at 37°.
We're more likely to see in low-lying and rural areas that frost patchy frost develop.
So, keep that in mind, but all of us, as I mentioned as a precaution, we may see some patchy frost mixing around the metro.
But by Saturday morning, I mentioned temperatures will be colder. The 30s won't be as widespread, but for some of us temperatures will be colder.
Maryville getting to around 33. So, just above the freezing mark in Maryville on Saturday morning. So, we're not expecting a freeze, but there is a good potential there for a frost. But while Saturday starts off very cold, well, we'll make our way back up to the mid-60s. 65 will be your high temperature on Saturday with sunshine and it should be a nice day to be out and about. Overall, the weekend looks nice. We get even warmer. We add about 10 plus degrees onto the day Sunday at 78. A 20% chance for an isolated afternoon rain and thunderstorm, but otherwise, it should be dry. Gusts to maybe 25 mph. It'll be a little bit more, you know, noticeable the winds on Sunday versus where we've been over the last couple of days. So, just wanted to point that out to you. And then we get to Monday, the 80s are back. I feel like it's been a while since we've seen an 80° high temperature. And then a 30% chance for some rain and storms. Now, Monday into Tuesday, as I mentioned, brings the best chance for rain and thunderstorm activity and it looks to be Monday late day into the night and then into Tuesday. So, Tuesday looks to be wetter all together versus Monday at a 40% chance. Right now, there is no severe threat from the Storm Prediction Center.
However, we are seeing some indications in the first 105 weather center of there being a little bit of some very low severe signals that we are going to be watching over the next couple of days, but right now, no prominent severe risk on Monday and Tuesday. Just wanted to be transparent and let you guys know that.
Right now, if there is going to be any day that could bring the potential for strong to severe storms, the odds are low, but right now it looks to be Monday and Tuesday time frame. Wednesday brings a 30% chance for rain and then we get Thursday and it is dry. So, here's a look at your 7-day forecast.
Things are still pretty quiet over the next couple of days as we're going to be mainly dry through the end of this week.
That small chance on Sunday, but I think most of us, if not all of us, will be dry.
Temperatures are in the 80s on Monday and then we fall into the 70s Tuesday, mid-60s Wednesday and then dry and sunny in the low 70s on Thursday. We're not expecting to really see any other temperatures that are colder than the upper 30s in the 7-day forecast as for now, so that's the good news there. And that's kind of all I have for you on this kind of update on our forecast. I will let you guys know we're still, you know, still haven't gotten any new information from the National Weather Service on tornadoes from Sunday or Monday. They are still out there surveying. So, once again, they mentioned to us yesterday that they expect or at least are trying to have all the information and all the surveys done by the end of this week.
So, we hope to continue to bring you more information, whether or not there's any more tornadoes added, we will be, of course, telling you that. However, if there are more, we'll tell you that, too. So, just wanted to give an update to cuz update on that because I know a couple people are probably going to ask cuz it's been kind of a hot topic, of course, here over the last couple of weeks. But today is the final day of April. We're rounding out what has been a very historic month in terms of, you know, the fourth wettest April on record. 7 and 1/2 inches of rain fell. We had, you know, 19 tornadoes occur so far this severe season.
18 is actually the record from the National Weather Service, but the National Weather Service has a different coverage area than we do. So, the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill actually has had 21 confirmed tornadoes. That does include two tornadoes that are in Benton County. We do not technically cover Benton County, so that's why they may have seen two different numbers. 21 would be from the National Weather Service from our specific area, it's 19.
And possibly counting. So, we'll probably get, you know, more information on Sunday and Monday's events once we already enter into May.
So, just wanted to give an update there.
But, I hope everybody enjoys a pleasant but cool Friday and a nice weekend. I will leave you with this nice view of downtown Kansas City. Have a nice rest of your night.
