[00:00:12]I've heard people say that when discussing poverty and infrastructure problems in remote First Nations communities in Canada. Many indigenous communities are not struggling because people are choosing isolation.

[00:00:26]The isolation was historically created through government policy.

[00:00:31]The Indian Act heavily restricted economic development, land ownership structures, mobility, and access to generational wealth for decades.

[00:00:42]And the effects of this do not disappear overnight.

[00:00:45]Just like the long-term impacts of segregation and institutional exclusion in the American South, systemic barriers ripple across generations.

[00:00:56]That is how structural poverty works.

[00:00:59]Also, reserves are not just pieces of land.

[00:01:03]They're one of the few places where First Nations culture, language, and spiritual practices take place.

[00:01:10]For many indigenous families, leaving is not comparable to taking a better job in another city.

[00:01:16]It can feel more like being pushed away from language, identity, ancestry, and community ties that survived colonization itself.

[00:01:26]A country that publicly celebrates indigenous culture still expects indigenous communities to abandon their land to access opportunities most Canadians take for granted. Here's where I agree with rural communities who feel abandoned.

[00:01:44]These people should not have to move to the city to get a job.

[00:01:48]The government should be meeting people where they are and creating opportunities in those communities. I wrote an article about this.
