In criminal law, the insanity defense requires demonstrating that a defendant lacked the capacity to understand their actions or know right from wrong; however, when a defendant describes committing a violent act with pleasure, excitement, or as if it were a positive experience (such as comparing watching someone die to 'opening Christmas presents'), this indicates clear criminal intent and rational understanding of consequences, causing the insanity defense to fail.

Cops Walk Into A Basement And Find A Severed Head In A BucketAdded:
Is this blood? Does this look like blood to you? It could possibly be blood. You got blood on the floor. I see that.
Officers had no idea what they were about to uncover, but the blood on that floor was just the beginning. This is actually what it's going to be. We're going to need more units here.
>> [music] >> This is the exact moment cops walked into that [music] basement and made the gruesome discovery of a severed human head sitting inside a bucket. And what was scattered around it was even worse.
Where is the rest of the body? Body's there. So, we're going to keep the head somewhere?
Well, they're all found in front of us for all the organs. They're all They're all just wounded. So, you dismembered the body, too? Yeah. What began as a night of methamphetamine and sex inside a Green Bay basement became one of the most horrifying and disturbing murder cases the state of Wisconsin has ever seen. And the most chilling part, she told the police everything without blinking once.
It's the early morning hours of February 23rd, 2022, when a man named Steve places a desperate, frantic call to Brown County Public Safety. Brown County Public Safety, how may I help you?
Uh yes, I live at officer 829 Stony Brook.
Uh my girlfriend woke me up and swears that she found her severed head of her son in the basement.
Okay, tell me what's happening here again?
I have no clue what's happening, but my girl swears that she found her severed head of her son in the basement.
Did you go down there? It's in a bucket.
I went down I can't tell what the [ __ ] it is. I didn't Part of my leg is up.
Kind of freaked out.
Okay. Did she just wake up and say that?
Yeah.
And who is Who Who Whose head is this?
She claims it's son.
How old is her son?
24 20 25 Is he missing or No, he he was here yesterday with some chick and then all of a sudden nobody's here.
And she came up to use the restroom a couple times.
And she keeps calling and calling and now she's saying that she hears the phone down there, too. Okay.
[clears throat] Is she with you right now?
Yes, I won't Yes, that fits the description and I don't know what to do.
Okay.
>> [music] >> All right. You said you went down there, correct?
Yeah, and I lifted this towel, but I can't I I can't see very well and I can't tell what the hell it is. So, there's something in the bucket >> There's There's something in the god damn bucket there.
All right. Can I talk to her?
Yes, you can.
Hello. Hi, Tara. So, can you tell me what's going on?
I think my son is dead. There's a head in a bucket. I don't know what I'm looking at. Maybe it's a doll. What makes you think that?
What makes you think that?
Cuz I looked in the bucket.
What What did you see?
Exactly what I told you.
Okay. Where Where's the Uh where's the rest of the body at?
No idea.
When's the last time you saw your son?
Um um okay. Yesterday so I think my son has got some money.
And he doesn't know anything here. He was staying here for a few days. I don't know what the laundry He was here a couple hours then he left with Taylor.
Are they With who? With Taylor?
Taylor? Who's that?
>> Girl.
Taylor Coronado. Officers are immediately dispatched to 829 Stonybrook Drive, the home of Tera Packlich, the mother of 24-year-old Chad Therien. What they find when they descend into that basement will confirm every horrifying word of that phone call.
Okay.
Did you both see this? I opened the towel. I picked up the towel and dropped it cuz I don't know what the [ __ ] it is, man. I had a bad vision. And she like, "Is this Is that what I think it is?"
And I I don't [ __ ] know.
What difference is You want to stay with those two. I'm just going to see if Yeah, so far Where is it at? It's right there. It is this Look like it's a body part. A lung?
I don't know. I don't know what that Just keep quiet. Just keep quiet.
This is actually what it's going to be.
We're going to need more units here.
That's it.
Therien's mother could not have known that the girl she knew only as Taylor had already left her son's body dismembered in pieces inside that very basement, just feet from where Tera slept. As investigators dig deeper into Taylor Shiver's background, they quickly find themselves down a rabbit hole of methamphetamine, instability, and a pattern of erratic behavior that those around her had watched escalate for months. It turns out Taylor had been heavily involved with meth long before that night, a lifestyle that had already fractured her grip on normal behavior.
The night of the murder had not been spontaneous in the way most people imagined. Taylor had called Shad, picked him up, and orchestrated every movement of the evening herself, from obtaining the drugs to choosing the location.
Investigators began to theorize that the killing was not the act of someone fully detached from reality, but of someone whose escalating compulsions had finally found a victim. The dismemberment, carried out over the course of an entire day, with tools found in the home, was too methodical, too prolonged, to be dismissed as pure psychosis. What detectives could not yet fully answer was whether the sexual violence inflicted on Shad's body after death was part of a preexisting pattern or something that emerged from the drug-fueled chaos of that night. But with little more than speculation and the disturbing evidence left behind in that basement.
Um is this blood? Does this look like blood to you?
I'm I'm just tripping.
Bloody footprints?
You see this right here?
Could possibly be blood. Bloody footprints on the path there.
Hm.
Hey, who did that?
I don't know.
Hi. Hi. Taylor, how's it going? Officer Russell with the Greeley Police Department.
Just make sure you got them on 911.
Check that with dispatch.
Lieutenant Contact Taylor, that one more service number one service is what you guys got your back with.
Any blood on your person?
You know.
You got blood on your hands or blood on your clothes? On my hands.
No, on your hands. Okay, yeah, we're going to have to What apartment you?
What apartment are you in? Do you live there? I don't think so. Come on. got something here then.
On the door. Which apartment? The one The one that's what they came back to.
Taylor Shae business is standing in the hallway of Scott's apartment on Eastman Avenue. Calm, conversational, greeting officers like she's running into neighbors. Not a trace of panic, not a flicker of guilt. Just hi, standing next to a bloody footprint on the floor.
Well, a few hours ago police were dispatched to address on Stony Point Road.
Um to appear as though Shae Theriault.
Do you know Shae?
I know his name is Shae.
He's my ex. He's your ex boyfriend?
Yeah.
Okay.
Well, they found a kind of disturbing stuff at that house there. Oh, really?
Yeah. Yeah.
A lot of blood.
Um basically Shae's head.
That's [ __ ] up.
Yeah, it's pretty [ __ ] up. I know.
And then, so we know you were there at one point. Yeah. With Shae. Yeah.
Um we also know you left.
Now that van, is that your van? No, that's my neighbor's. Your neighbor's van? Oh, the guy Stan?
Okay. So, this Where did you go? Which way were the police getting you with that on Eastman Ave? Yeah.
Okay, correct. Is that where you live?
Yeah. Okay. That's I'm staying there now.
Okay, is that your apartment? No. No.
Whose apartment is it?
That man.
And who is that man?
Scott Holmes.
Scott? Holmes. Okay.
So, and is that his van?
Yes. Okay.
And so, did you leave from Shae's house and go to Scott's house sometime today?
Yeah. Okay.
Well, they found part of Shad that is almost at mom's house.
It's almost his head.
Where's the rest of his body?
It's there, inside his house. It's in the house? Inside his house. Okay.
Can you tell me what happened?
That's a good question, because I blacked out during that time. Taylor's response to being told they found Shad's head is not horror. It's not denial.
It's a calm acknowledgement followed by a voluntary admission that she blacked out. She's not deflecting. She's already filling in the blanks.
[ __ ] I don't know. There's this um There's this chain There's this chain thing, right?
And then um Yeah, like I was playing around with it.
Okay. And like we were we were smoking the [ __ ] right? Right. And then um I'm terrible at playing things, so uh Let's see here. And then Here comes the chain, right? And then you put it around his neck.
Well, we were like playing around and [ __ ] and then um I don't know how I put it on and take it off.
I don't know.
You say you were smoking the [ __ ] what was what was that be?
Ice.
Ice.
Ice? Ice.
Okay.
Um Have you taken any other drugs tonight?
No, I just stopped them two days ago.
I don't mind if I stop them two days.
Were you smoking ice? Yeah.
And how? In a pipe or someplace else?
The one that's on the counter or on table. And I love the bag there. You did? I did. Where? Green bag and it should be right there.
Where exactly these men were was doing?
I thought that [ __ ] That [ __ ] Okay.
And you say where was this place? Where would it be? In the basement or on the first floor or second floor?
>> Basement. Not basement.
And it was ice in a you know it was a bathroom. Just if we have to go back to the bathroom. It was small bathroom then? Restroom. [clears throat] Restroom.
And um And just you and Chad?
Yeah.
And so there was a chain.
>> [clears throat] >> You know kind of chain? It's the one that's on the same place as where the [ __ ] and um I think I had to be on the ground.
And where would that be again? Like please. I think it's on the dresser. On the dresser? Is it on the um is it on the dresser or I don't know either. I don't haven't been there.
I mean as best as you can remember. So you think that there could be a chain and the ice on a dresser down in the basement.
It's just weird. I got like a weird flashback on the phone.
About what happened?
Yeah, it's short. It was real short but And what did you see? It's just um I don't even know anymore like uh it was like it was weird. I was riding him like a donkey, okay? And then like I think so. I think that's what it was happening.
What's that? Falling and then I I don't know.
Were um you two being intimate, having sex?
It was getting there. It was getting there. Okay.
So would this be considered foreplay?
Yeah.
Taylor describes the moment of the killing as a weird flashback, fragmented, casual, almost like she's trying to remember a dream. But the fragments she's offering are precise enough to tell detectives one thing. She remembers exactly what she did. So you went back to Was it you and Chad going back to his mom's?
Or did she come?
Dave.
>> Or Scott. Scott. Scott. Scott. Yeah.
I'm going to do that occasionally and I apologize if I get your name wrong a couple of times, but All right. Yeah.
Did Scott then come with you?
Scott stayed at home.
He was high as hell. He usually messes with the president.
I see you went You went with Chad. He is not involved at all. Okay.
So you and Chad went back to Chad's mom's house.
Did it How'd you get in?
Did you see Was anybody home?
The door was unlocked.
You went What time do you think this was?
That's a good question. Okay.
Did Was anybody home? Did you You told her anybody?
I just gave his mom's address here.
Tara. Tara. Tara's mom. Is that your mom's name? Yes. Damn, the head.
Yeah, yeah, I can't believe I left the head though.
Where did she put the body?
The body's there.
Yeah.
It's um So were you going to take the head somewhere? I liked it.
You liked it?
Well, you're out of line [clears throat] trying to look for all the organs, but I don't want the head. There's no way I'm going to I just wanted to Yeah. So you dismembered the body, too?
Yeah.
And what did you do with the body parts?
I don't know. They're in the house.
Somewhere?
They're like um Yeah.
Yeah.
Basement? Upstairs? Downstairs?
Definitely in the basement. Up in the ground with the And then um I know I forgot the head. I wanted the head.
Did Did bring anything with you? Yeah.
It's in the van. What? It's in the van.
It's um What is it? What is it?
A foot, maybe. A what? I think it's a foot. A foot in the back of the van? A leg, maybe. I don't know.
I just put a leg I'm going to bring it all in and then I'm like, "Nah, it's messy." So, then I I just left it. I got lazy.
Okay. I got lazy and that's what I did.
So, I'm like Okay.
So, there's going to be either a foot or leg in the van.
And then um Yeah, what did you do with the head? I forgot I thought it was in the van, so uh yeah.
What did you do with the head? The head I put in that bucket, that black bucket.
Black bucket? With the blanket on top.
Okay.
And then where did you Where did you leave it?
Leave the head?
I I stole the bucket. It's right by the stairs. By the stairs?
Okay.
Okay.
Um How did you dismember his body?
Knife.
With what? Knives, knives, knives, knives. Knives? Did you use more than one knife?
About four.
And where did you get those from?
Kitchen.
Except for my bread knife and my wasn't sharp.
They weren't sharp? No. No.
It was all right. Bread knife was good.
Bread knife? The bread knife was good.
Really?
I I used it but it was all right.
Yeah. She forgot the head. She got lazy.
She describes leaving pieces of a human being scattered across a van and a basement with the same energy someone uses to describe forgetting groceries in their car. The detectives in that room are trained to stay neutral, but what Taylor She Business is describing is something that even the most experienced investigators in Wisconsin had never heard delivered this way.
His silver where did you get the chains?
I don't know. He pulled it off of his pocket.
He pulled it off?
He had two of them. One for me and one for him.
And can you describe them to me?
Chains.
Chain link? Chain link and a stove burner.
Stove burner? Yeah. And what size were they? Like a dog chain or a large lock type of chain? They were just plain.
Um they were not They were not always Mhm.
Um So silver chains? Yes. And he had two?
What you guys do with them? We put them around her neck.
You did? Yes. And then what were you doing while they were around her necks?
I strangled her.
I was strangling her. You were strangling her?
I I was pulling them and then I was Was the blows on her or off?
Oh he had a shirt on. He had a shirt on how long?
Um you know what I mean?
I I didn't really care at the time how long he had it on.
Did he ever put the chain around you?
Did the chain ever go around your neck?
I put it around my neck. Did you have any marks or anything? He didn't get a chance to strangle me.
And just see Did he get a chance to strangle you? No.
Was that He was lying to though or was that part of the Yeah I thought that was the thing and then like I don't know why I just went to Okay. Okay.
So when did you realize that Shayla wasn't uh alive anymore?
I don't know.
You know his face turned purple. Huh?
He was coughing up blood and he was pissing.
He pissed himself and his face was all purple.
>> That still didn't stop him. I don't know what was going on. I don't know what he was planning on doing. So his blood was coming out of his mouth?
>> Yeah, and I'm feeling it right here.
Here it's right here.
I'm sorry? Here it's right here. It's right Okay.
Did he stop?
No.
I didn't.
No?
Okay, no problem.
So I'm going to try it again. Do you figure he was dead then?
Yeah. And what did you do?
Played with him a little bit.
Did you try to call his mom or dad or anybody else in the house? No.
Did you try to call the ambulance?
Why not?
It's happened before.
She watched his face turn purple. She watched blood come from his mouth. She watched him piss himself as he died and she kept going.
Um he was coughing up the blood right now. I was just waiting for him to die and then later on I was looking at his purple face.
What did he expect Did he expect to have sex with you? Cuz I thought he was [ __ ] up and he was dead. I was already this far and so then I was just like, yeah. I understand but why would he put the the the chain around his neck?
Because he's a kinky little Yeah, he is.
So was he expecting to have sex with you then?
He came to Did he say that? I don't know. He didn't say anything.
Okay.
But he said that he just um he just started choking.
Yeah.
How long did it take him to turn purple and die?
Like um 3 to 5 minutes maybe.
Okay.
I don't know.
I don't know. I don't I have no idea.
you said that when you were choking on this third coughing up blood or yeah so I just like I like to see what happens when I see what happens when he dies well this one was different this one was coughing blood so when he when he put the chain on his neck he thought that you guys are fine and can engage sex right you think that's what Chad was thinking I mean what were you thinking I was going to do the same thing you know I was going in and I did and I went in but then he was like choking me like he didn't really say anything so I'm like he put it on his neck I already know I'm going to choke him and I did so all right so before that did you guys was there any foreplay we launched onto the bed we went from the stairs to the bed and then but were clothes on or off but before you chain went around his neck were you and Chad like kissing or any foreplay or anything no we were chilling at home you just chill so all of a sudden put the chain went around his neck how come I'm just trying to to get it he likes it all right I was going to walk him like a dog you know and he wanted that I have no idea what I'm going to do anyway >> [snorts] >> okay and you're claiming it was his idea put the chain on his neck hm no it was his idea it was all him all right so you're on the bed the chain goes around his neck and start choking him then you just realize that he was going to die or what?
I'm just like [ __ ] I think I went a little too far cuz like like I I was blacked out while I was doing that, right? And then like [ __ ] And then like I look at him and I'm like [ __ ] he's already purple. I'm like [ __ ] I'm like I don't know if he's breathing.
Is he good? Is he good? But then like when I had pulled him up like no during the blackout I was like [ __ ] Like he was coughing up blood. I'm like I don't know I just kept on going. Like damn.
Like Mhm.
You mean to tell me you said that when you were choking he was coughing up blood you kind of were like well I've gone this far I'm just going to keep going. Did you realize that by continuing that that may kill him?
Probably yeah because I felt bad that he was like because I'm like damn there's no reason that this is happening so I might as well just kill him. Okay. So you realized that by continuing that you may end up you may actually kill him.
He was I swear to god he was telling me he's just like just So I'm like [ __ ] And I did it.
Okay.
I I swear I didn't mean to [ __ ] up.
I like accidentally [ __ ] up and then I was like [ __ ] Oh my god.
And then yeah.
That's exactly what happened.
All those are And and you you you may also said that you enjoyed it, right?
And enjoyed it.
Oh yeah. All right.
What did you enjoy about that?
I'm just it's Okay. Thrilling?
Uh rush? Exciting?
What was the feeling that you got out of That's all That's all it is. I don't know.
Okay.
I I'm just trying to understand what you were feeling when you said that. Yeah, it's like Joyous? You know what I mean?
Did it make you happy? Was it just kind of exciting? Like opening Christmas presents or >> I don't know. It's Like This is This is the thing that I have like I've always had, you know, like You ever love something so much that it killed Like yeah, that happens to me. That's the feeling that I have. I love something so much that I killed it. Like I love it so much and then I killed it.
That's what happens to me. Like opening Christmas presents. That is the phrase Taylor Schabusiness uses to describe watching a 24-year-old man die at her hands. No remorse, not a shock, an excitement, the kind she says she has always carried inside her. This is the moment the entire insanity defense collapses because what Taylor is describing is not psychosis. It is a preference.
I didn't mean for all this to happen and then I'm like I [ __ ] up. I know I [ __ ] up.
[ __ ] Yeah, I'm sorry.
That's what happened. No, you know, it's feelings kind of my sister and dad and family and We're all more than being sorry, you know.
You killed him.
You got to tell his sister sorry.
Didn't mean for that to happen.
You didn't mean to kill him? But I didn't mean >> didn't try to help him? No, I didn't.
No. It It works both ways. Like I have no idea like it You was going to die.
>> was tugging the chain. I knew he was going to die, so I mean, I didn't but at the same time I woke up like [ __ ] that's bad.
>> [snorts] >> I didn't I didn't know what to do cuz like he was giving me like a look and I was like no.
You know what I mean? Cuz like I don't know. But you liked [clears throat] it.
I liked it.
But I'm like [ __ ] Like it was like I didn't know what to do cuz like oh [ __ ] I liked it.
Why didn't you cuz you didn't want to call police or ambulance or anything, so Actually, I thought about it.
I thought about it.
And then um I was getting angry at myself. Very angry at myself because I didn't have a doctor.
No.
Sucks not having one.
Was there sex after he was dead you mean you were choking? Yeah.
Oh, yeah. Yeah.
Very.
Is there anything when you were sucking on his penis after he was dead? It was weird and everything was um he was choking on my penis. Oh.
Hey, can you just see something I got to ask you a question. Just want to kind of clarify some things quick.
How many girl babies you choking?
All right, I know you said you were choking. It won't take long. So, after the incident where you choked him out, can you describe how you placed him before cuz you said you cut his head off first, correct?
Um, yeah.
>> Can you describe where was he at? Laying on the bed?
At home? Okay. Like face in the bed.
Okay, so this is the top of the bed?
Yeah. Okay. And then um I pulled him.
And then uh his head was hanging off.
So, so he's probably laying face up?
So, his back was on the bed?
>> His head's partially off the bed? Yeah.
Okay.
And then um the tub was like right there. Like the pan that you had the Yeah. pan is what you put it in.
So, basically his head's right here in the pockets right here.
Yeah, and then um from there I didn't mess with it.
You cut his head off? Yeah. She admits she thought about calling an ambulance.
She admits she liked it. She admits she got angry at herself not for killing Shed Thurian but for not knowing what to do afterward. What detectives are sitting across from is not someone who lost control for a moment. It is someone who made a decision, lived inside it for hours, and is now describing it piece by piece from a plastic chair in an interrogation room. All right, so that little loop at the end of the chain, that could go around kind of like a dog choke collar? Yeah, exactly. Okay, do you think it was a dog choke collar? It could have been.
Very much so. Was it that size? It was that size or a larger size.
All right. And so then you would have been Was he laying on the bed or kneeling or something else?
He was He was laying on um on his side.
On like that? Yeah.
And that's your talking dog choke chain?
Yeah. Okay.
And there were two of those, correct?
You said there was one two of them, one for her and one that was on him. And there's just a smaller >> Yeah. Okay.
Does this guy look familiar to you at all?
Mr. Gan? That guy right there? Yeah.
Okay. That's the one.
So he was lying face down on the bed or was he just on his hands and knees or >> face down on the bed. And then you were on top of him?
I was I was on his back.
Pulling the chain back. Okay.
Great. Uh-huh.
Did you guys find all the parts here?
So yeah, we're going through the process of looking.
So did you remove any other any tissue? Did you have the heart and the liver out with the lungs? Did you remove all that from the chest cavity?
Or did you leave them in there?
They're They're all in there.
Do you remember or They're all in plastic bags. Separate bags or one big bag?
They're all in separate bags in one bag.
Okay.
All right. They're fine.
All right, so you got it.
Okay. With those words, the prosecution has everything they need. In July 2023, Taylor Schabusiness, 25, is found guilty on all three counts: first-degree intentional homicide, mutilating a corpse, and third-degree sexual assault.
In September 2023, a Wisconsin judge sentenced her to life in prison without the possibility of parole, citing the brutality of the killing, the deliberate desecration of Shad Thyrion's body, and the devastating, irreparable trauma inflicted on his family. Before you go, I want to ask you something. Do you think Taylor Schabusiness is the most dangerous female killer you've ever heard of, or have you heard worse? Let me know in the comments. If you made it to the end of this one, thank you. We extend our deepest condolences to Shad Thyrion's family, to his mother Terra, and to every person who loved him. Our mission is simple: voices for the voiceless. We tell the stories of those who can no longer speak for themselves.
Don't [music] forget to subscribe. As always, thank you for watching, and we'll see you in the next one.
