Bomani Jones’s claim that *The Wire* lacks depth is a shallow take that ignores the show's complex social commentary. This debate is more about loud opinions than a serious look at what makes these shows great.

This Podcast Goes Off the Rails with Adam Friedland, Bomani Jones, and Trey Murphy III追加:
Every character Every character in The Wire is one-dimensional?
>> Yeah, actually. They're kind of stereo Like everyone's kind of like a like kind of a cartoon character of a of of a cop or of a Yeah.
>> [laughter] >> Yeah. Are you serious? They get to NBA and they're just entitled. Like that's the biggest thing that I see right now with kids. There's so much entitlement.
>> need Hold on. We need to rewind back to when you were talking about me talking saying old head stuff.
>> No, And every Here we go. Here's Here's the Here's the Here's the >> [laughter] >> Here's the kids today. They ball with their feet. They are not They don't know how good they got it, boy. They don't know how good they got it. I'm not joking about When do you feel like you got comfortable interviewing people?
Uh I don't know. I'm I'm like too comfortable. I don't know why. Yeah, you've been >> he's league. I'm telling my opinions on sports. Like what what right do I have?
I think he's I think he's pretty comfortable.
>> Bro, I'm in love with her. She's beautiful. And then I was like um Has anyone told you you look like Lisa Bonet from Cosby Show? And then I was like, [ __ ] She's black and I saw her and she looks like another black She's like, that's my mom. And [laughter] it was like it was Zoë Kravitz.
And she was like, what did you do next?

He just He's caught up with Euphoria.
What should he watch now? We've been talking about the next show.
Dude, I don't know the last time I got on a show. You watched The Sopranos?
No, I did not.
>> I just did The Sopranos for the first time. How many seasons? How many seasons?
The Sopranos is the best The Sopranos is the best show ever. How many seasons?
It's the best thing. It's the best movie. It's the best song. How many How many seasons?
How many How many seasons?
>> It's like six.
Well, seven has seven >> It's an investment. Bro, every time I date a girl, I make her watch Bro, you just watched Euphoria in a day and a half. You watched two two and a half seasons.
It was easy. I know I see the finish line right there. Sopranos, I will not see the finish line.
>> So, if you don't mind a little stress, The Bear is worth worth rolling with. It's a business. All the thing for me with The Bear is like I get the feeling from talking to you that you did not grow up in a dysfunctional household. Um so it's difficult to relate to content cuz it's like a show about a bunch of people who grew up in dysfunctional families. I Euphoria is not how I grew up either. No, no, [laughter] no. I'm just I'm just No, look, I've watched Euphoria, so I can't tell you how that goes. But it's a particular stress of watching The Bear, where it's just kind of like it's for me it's like, yo, why do you people talk to each other like this? Like I can't Mhm.
It But it's a very interesting show that will give you a lot to think about.
>> That stuff does interest me. Like I That's the thing too is like I watch these shows. Like I watched Euphoria and it's like I grew up so differently. Like it's almost like a bubble compared to to like what these guys are going through in high school. And I feel like it's probably not the most normal, but like it's somewhat There's some normalcy in like what was going on in the in Euphoria. Yeah. I mean, The Bear got The Bear's got normalcy. It's just like how Uncut Gems was a good movie, but not a good time. Mhm.
>> The Bear has a lot of that for me. Mhm.
Just watch The Wire.
Just watch The Wire. Mhm. I don't know.
You're the second person to tell me this this week, actually, so >> there's nothing that even Adam, did you watch The Wire? Yeah. And you think The Sopranos is better than The Wire?
>> Yes.
I think that The Sopranos to The >> Every character is one-dimensional in in The Wire.
>> That's That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard in my life. That's the craziest [ __ ] I've ever heard. Every [laughter] character Every character in The Wire is one-dimensional?
>> Yeah, actually. They're kind of stereo Like everyone's kind of like a like kind of a cartoon character of a of a cop or of a Yeah.
>> [laughter] >> Yeah. Are you serious? It's not like Sopranos is a meditation on the concept of American power. YOU THINK THE SOPRANOS HAS ALL THIS LEVEL OF DEPTH IN THE YOU KNOW SOPRANOS IS SOPRANOS IS A show about a bunch of dumb dudes. Every single dude on Sopranos is dumb. Well, it's about a bunch of cavemen interacting with the with the modern world. But they have all this depth and nuance to each other. Big [ __ ] So many levels, right? Yeah, of course.
Outside of my best friend He betrayed his best friend. He betrayed his best friend. Oh, that never happened on The Wire. Outside of my guy with the choo-choo trains, I don't feel like none of them dudes really had levels like you said.
>> depth? He's He's gay?
I mean, like what is the What Just tell me. It's He's an amazing character, right? He's so scary, right? But like what is like what's the conflict in Omar?
>> The depth of Omar is at once his rigidity to a particular code of the way that you were supposed to live, though fairly consistently fudging on that a little bit as it mattered to what the life was that he felt or the people that he felt had been done wrong. His willingness to adapt the code to the people rather than the code sticking to himself. That is a significant part of Omar.
>> You're sure that's on But like what do we know about Omar besides like as as a character like in a human way? Like So, what do we know about Omar?
>> What's motivating him in that capacity?
Besides he's just gay.
>> Well, what we know about Omar is that he He >> [laughter] >> He traffics in He traffics in a space of a very consistent empathy, and that was >> an amazing character. I mean, I'm just trying to think of like The problem you would have getting into The Wire is it The Wire The Wire is amazing. The Wire is amazing. It's a great show. But The Wire does purposely start slow. It's a little slow. They weed you out for sure. They weed you out for sure. I don't I I need the first episode to hit.
>> The first episode hits and it's wet.
The Wire and Euphoria are not are >> [laughter] >> set up completely different.
The The charac So, as much as I hate Stringer Bell, you're saying there's no nuance to Stringer Bell? Uh what? He goes to community college? What? He's trying to say But the Stringer Bell nuance is the strong desire to be anything other than what he he is in the attempt to try to cleanse himself and make himself a member of legitimate society, only to learn that truly he exists in a caste system that will never allow him to get to the next level of the place that he wants to be. Yeah. That's the nuance there. I don't think you got to watch anymore.
That was just That was just top top of the dome. That was incredible. Thank you. See your work It was just unbelievable. I I I appreciate [laughter] that. Okay, but have y'all have y'all watched Snowfall though? No, no, no, no, no, no, no. No nuance to the white boys selling dope who think they somehow better than the black people who sell dope.
>> I did. You like it?
>> I did. Snowfall's fire. Snowfall's good.
Do you want to talk about character depth and character development?
>> Snowfall?
I can tell you right now from his bit of The Wire, he ain't watched no goddamn You're like I mean, if you're talking about character development, that is Oh, yeah, yeah. No, Snowfall's fire. Did you ever Did you ever watch Oz? Yeah. It turns crazy. Oz might be your next show. Oz gets so bad. Oz is crazy with Euphoria.
You know the moment where it gets bad?
It's great and then it gets I don't know if they fired the whole writing staff, but like I don't Are you a spoilers guy? Cuz it's baby to care about The when they gave them those drugs that made them age really fast. Oh, yeah.
It's just like one of the biggest collapses of of a TV show I've ever seen. Tell me if I'm describing this wrong. Basically, this was one of the first HBO shows that came out like 1999.
All these actors from all these other shows like SVU and Sopranos and everything, it was all their first thing. It's about a prison in upstate New York. I used to watch it with my parents after The Sopranos.
>> up. Like it's it's like Euphoria. Like it's super graphic. Every episode, they're basically explaining why how every all the gangs and everybody got into prison. Someone dies every episode, at least one person. Usually in a [ __ ] up way like this where they are You're getting buried inside a wall or you're getting lit on fire in the gym and [ __ ] like that. And there's no None of the characters have any redeeming qualities.
Like everybody is Even the guards are the Everyone's horrible. And so part of the thing with the show that you just realize is like you're not People are getting killed left and right and you're not really sad. Know who's in it actually? The guy out of BC, the dude who's in Euphoria with the cowboy hat.
He's one of the star Alamo? Alamo.
He's much younger. He looks way different, but he's one of the stars of it in um cuz it came out whatever, 25 years ago. But it is like I feel like it's still a thing that a certain generation hasn't watched. I used to watch that with my family on Sunday nights.
I'mma do it because every summer I give myself a project of tackling one big show, and I will do The Sopranos just because y'all have If you got to do If you got If you got to do one, The Wire is less of a time investment and a much greater pay.
>> got that summer. What's he going to go?
Cancun? He's got to watch The Sopranos.
Because he's already asking [laughter] how many seasons it was. I'm telling you, you'll you'll enjoy The Wire a little bit more.
>> I started The Wire. I I watched like the first like four [laughter] episodes. No, but I'm That's what I'm telling you.
Keep Keep it going and you'll get Keep it going and you'll get there. I'm just here to tell you now. Anybody that would tell you that The Wire's characters have no depth is not a person whose opinion you [laughter] should be listening to.
It's not in the way that The Sopranos does. I'll say this. Culturally, because of my culture, I will probably lean more towards The Wire, but I've been told the second like this is the second time this week I I need to watch The Sopranos. So, it's like I will tell you 15 times that you need to watch The Wire and try power with this. I'm I'm just telling you right now. My parents My parents didn't let me watch The Wire when when I was growing up, so I'm just telling you right now. Do not accept checks from this man. His face is on the cash register now. He just He just bounced the check so bad right now.
>> I have a totally separate question.
Yeah. Did you see the thing that happened with Kenny Beecham yesterday?
Mhm.
Did you see this or no? No. Can you I'll I'll describe it. Did you want to like Brian Scalabrine was on this radio show talking to somebody. Yeah. Do you know Kenny Beecham Do you know Kenny? Yeah.
And Brian Scalabrine like like getting out of the whole like radio show, he's like, all right, like tell me this. Who has a bigger name, me or Kenny Beecham? And the dude was like, Kenny Beecham.
>> [laughter] >> Like And he was like, no way. Like no.
And he kept on like doubling down like who has a bigger name, me or Kenny Beecham? And it's like I don't know the history between them at all, but it's just like, why Wait, so you don't know Frank.
This guy, Frank, he was just dumping he was just dumping on Kenny basically for getting a an hour radio show on on Sirius which I guess took away one of their >> And Brian Scalabrine was one that said Kenny beat him. Yes. Okay. Okay. So, I did Around the Horn with Frankie Ice for a long time, right? Oh, yes. I like Frank. This is a very Frank-like take.
Like anybody who knows I solo is not terribly surprised. Okay, I know his last name. Yeah, yeah, yeah. If you know I solo it like like Frank is an old-school newspaper dude, right? Like Frank is the son of a New York City cop who can park in front of Madison Square Garden cuz they'll never do anything to his car because he is his dad's son.
Like so what is that? Frank is a is a like this sounds like a take that Frank would have. The problem was Frank went a little too hard with this in a way that nobody could think it was funny and now all the young people are mad at him. I think it gets back to the larger conversation of gatekeepers and people being like cuz I wrote for this newspaper I did this I did this I like you need to pay your dues versus Kenny didn't pay his dues. Kenny just started putting [ __ ] online and it was good and it hit and everything good has come to him since then but I feel like even in like the world you're in now like like you just made it on your own.
Like you didn't you didn't get your stuff because somebody in [ __ ] Hollywood was like yo put Adam on and all of a sudden you're planted on. No, no, no.
Like you like so I'm just curious your perspective on not even on that situation but on on that with the with how these things are sort of coming together now. Uh yeah, the internet there isn't like a queue anymore. That makes sense. I mean for me I didn't like it was an accident kind of. We didn't like know you can make money from a podcast.
And then yeah, it wasn't like deliberate scheming like this is going to be huge.
It so it's kind of weird the way it's happened. And then now that the interview show that I do is like yeah, that was also like a joke at first that they're going to make like the least popular guy from the dumbest podcast of all time into a public intellectual Dick Cavett style talk show host.
But then it that kind of became a real thing. When do you feel like you got comfortable interviewing people?
Uh I don't know. I'm I'm like too comfortable. I don't know why. Yeah, you get comfortable.
>> he's league. I'm telling my opinions on sports. Like what what right do I have?
>> [laughter] >> I can answer I think he's pretty comfortable. Yeah, yeah. No, no, it's too comfortable.
I I I got nervous around when we had Jadakiss I got really nervous. Cuz he's the coolest guy. Did you get nervous you didn't get nervous with >> really get I didn't get nervous with Gavin Newsom though. You didn't get nervous >> the head of the fifth largest economy in the world, you know. Did you get nervous with Maury or no? No, that's that's family.
That's just like a old Jewish guy. I I know how to do it. I know the language of it. He got really upset at me.
>> [laughter] >> I just did his podcast yesterday and he got up he brought up something from the last one cuz I was like He is shockingly on point to be 86 years old.
>> He's he's 87. He's a five handicap. Wow.
>> He's nice at golf.
>> He also looks amazing.
>> Yeah, like I did I did his pod I did his pod a couple of months ago and I was amazed because I didn't realize how old he was and I was just shocked at how sharp he was.
He I made him call Kornheiser.
>> [laughter] >> And then he's like this guy Adam wants to talk to you and he's like I don't like talking to people.
>> to say that was a risky move you made [laughter] right there cuz Tony Kornheiser will call you some variety of [ __ ] No, but like Maury >> that's the thing Tony doesn't care about that. Like the idea I'm just going to indulge you cuz you're a fan? Maury Maury for me is a very much associated with like that era of media like the television generation what what that I'm from. I'd watch Jerry Springer, Price is Right, Jerry Springer, Maury and then I'd end the day Around the Horn, PTI.
That was the being home sick from school lineup. And I was like I get to watch TV all day.
And so very much like in a strange way like you're self-included like there's a connection I guess Kornheiser is just like he's just I said it to him he's like just the Larry David of sports. Him and Van Gundy. Him and Jeff. How how long how long ago was this when you were I was I'm 39, bro. So when was this when you were saying you were doing that?
>> When I was sick home from school like the early 2000s I guess like yeah.
I I loved Jerry Springer until you get old.
Bro, what are you watching?
>> [laughter] >> What are you watching Maury?
Yeah, yeah, wait wait when did you when did you get on PTI? I started doing Around the Horn in 2010.
>> Or Around the Horn 2010? Yeah, 2010. So I yeah, I was like I guess I was in college then. I was in Where were you in fourth grade?
Fifth grade? Were you nice at AAU? Nah, he's probably I'm not even going to do this. I'm sorry to cut you off.
>> I wasn't bad but I wasn't I was probably like always probably like the third best player on the team. Really? Yeah, probably so.
>> on accident and [ __ ] huh? Say again?
Elbowing people on accident and stuff.
Oh, no. When I was young it was not on accident. No, like You would do it on purpose. So yeah, no, like if somebody stole a ball from me when I was a kid like I would run down and like flagrant foul them. Like jump from >> [laughter] >> jump from very far out and while they're going up like just hack them like just hack them. And my dad was like look like they don't know what you're doing right now cuz they're young and they're dumb but once they get older they'll realize you better be ready to fight. I was like you know what? Let me calm down. So yeah.
>> funny because you're so calm now. I did calm down.
>> glad to hear that. I'm talking about this in general. You know what I'm saying?
You should [laughter] calm down.

Thanks, Spindrift. What did you watch when you came home from school?
Was Maury and [ __ ] still on? What I was watching basketball, bro. SportsCenter, put on I'd watch highlights, watch old games, watch my watch my games. Like I literally only used to watch basketball.
That's why >> with people cuz they get to a certain point it just flipped to YouTube. It was like there's like a certain generation you had Jerry Springer, you had Maury, you had all the Judge Joe Brown all that [ __ ] Judge Judy and then it just became like you don't even watch TV. I have to explain that to people when they bring me around a certain age group of people younger thinking they're going to care and I'm like dude they have no idea who I am. They never watched television.
Yeah. I didn't watch PTI though. I didn't. But like they don't even they're never even heard of it. It's not even a question of like oh I I've heard of it but I haven't seen it on >> No, so it's funny you talk about Kenny.
I had Kenny on my pod a couple years ago and it was definitely him doing me the favor, right? Like I'm trying to tap I don't YouTube is a world I don't really understand. I'm like let me try to figure this out and I'm going through my head I don't even know to this day. I'm like there's no guarantee that he has any idea who I am because he is at an age that I cannot be assured >> though. He know ball but it like I can't assume that that person watched television at the time that I was on television, right? Like I'm not saying there's any insult to him. There's a generational gap where he talks about where suddenly it just went to YouTube.
Yeah, bro. Like I like for me if I'm about to eat like at the crib I'm putting on YouTube.
Like it's what I'm saying it's like I have to have on like YouTube >> want to have to figure out what I want to watch. Like I'm down for somebody to tell me what to watch. That's why you got to you just got to keep watching like your recommended will basically just be a bunch of stuff you want to watch anyway. Yeah. Do you think the this is a sort of a broad question but do you think um the streamer ecosystem is going to continue? And the reason why I asked that is I feel like a lot of the streamer popularity came cuz of the pandemic where it's like you're you're actually stuck at home and you're like oh I got to watch Trey all day long because of this versus like oh I got to be outside for the summer like I'm not really trying to watch I don't care how entertaining they are. I'm not trying to watch somebody sit at their computer >> got to think about what the audience is is kids. All kids, yeah. They're all kids so like they're going to have time on that iPad and they're probably going to watch streamers. Like there's kids nowadays they don't only want to be basketball players they want to be streamers growing up. Yeah. And the big money is not in getting people to actually watch you. It's in getting people to press play and kind of forget that it's there.
>> It's like the radio Yeah, like that's that's what like that's the Spotify game is like we just want you we don't care if you like this, man. Just keep playing it, right? And so [clears throat] the streamer is the person that's willing to do that. The question is how many of these people actually making money? There's got to be some crowding out of that industry cuz it's one of those it's kind of like selling dope and then everybody's like I can do it and go make money. It's easy, right? And they're like yo, man. This shit's kind of hard, bro.
>> Yeah, you got to get in early I assume.
I would imagine.
>> just such a time Yeah, is there room for new people?
>> a time commitment.
>> I don't know. I mean we when I when we started a podcast we didn't know you could make money from it and we kind of like got in a like a very good moment I guess. What do you what do you >> it was the Planet Fitness scam. The $5 a month Patreon you just forget.
I I assume half the people are just like forgot. It's like you forget you have a Planet Fitness membership. What do you tell if people come to you and they're like they like ask for advice or [ __ ] like what do you say? I have no idea.
I I have no idea what what the hell is happening. It's fun. I'm really lucky that I get to do what I get to do. But the show that I make now, I want to feel like a TV show. It's very like it's produced. I have a staff.
I like uh Yeah, making just another podcast is kind of like uh A, probably not a smart thing to do.
Probably cuz it's just so saturated. But B, like you want to do something different that's like more And also just like more you know, challenging.
Do you feel at all disheartened by not knowing what to tell people? Cuz it breaks my heart. Cuz people come up to me like I'm going to be some kind of oracle in terms of like, "Well, what can you tell me about this?" And I literally can't tell them anything. Like I've told people stop sending people to me cuz I don't I have no idea what the answer is.
Like I don't know what the industry's going to do. I don't know Everybody with the same bright idea starting a podcast, but the day still only got 24 hours, right? Like I don't I don't I don't I can't imagine trying to break a new podcast at this point. I don't I don't know how any of this works. Like I'm just trying to hold on to the people I got. Forget about trying to get bigger.
I'm trying to hold on to what I got. And it breaks my heart because I was able to change my life in a lot of ways by doing this job. And I can't It's not that I can't recommend to you that you do it.
If you want to do it, that's fine. I just can't I can't tell you anything about how you're supposed to make it.
>> I think the simple answer is just like you got to be good at some like at it at it. It sucks.
>> I generally go with that, right?
>> you suck, there's like probably you're not Like I you if like if people say they like the show, they come up to me they they say they like the show it's cuz they're I'm doing I guess a good job. I don't know. But like, you know, I don't know like there's like I really just don't know any of the like tricks for the algorithm. I pay like a [ __ ] child to do all the reels and social media. I don't The social media I hate looking at.
Yeah, it's like uh I like my Instagram reels. That's That's the last thing I look at cuz it's just funny stuff. The internet Did you know this? The internet used to be funny.
It used to just all be funny stuff.
>> wine. You could watch I find find Oh my god, I miss it. I have wine. It was just it would make you laugh. You'd be happy.
That was just like yelling at the president and >> [laughter] >> It's really It's really angry. It sucks.
Everyone's having a fight. Everyone's having an argument. It is where people that what catches on the internet is unhappiness. It is not happiness that catches. It's all >> I'm trying to make something that's not negative right now and I it's such a stupid business bet, you know?
>> Yo, I did the same thing. Like I made it explicit to set it out loud. Like I want to make my content about the things we love and the people that we love and go around that. And I am not convinced that that has been good for business. They want to see people get done. They want to see people get done. I used to be really good at that, right? And I'm bored with it. I don't >> good at it. You spit that wire thing really fast. I assume I wasn't listening to the words, but I assume you were you were smart.
>> You're too You're going too fast. Yeah, yeah. But It was like yeah, I had to write it I had to write it down. But I'm too old to be mad at people all the time, right?
>> I just don't want to have a fight with a Yeah, and also I don't care. Everyone's like so pissed off about like My I say this all the time. My sister called me mad about the East Wing of the White House. I was like, "Weren't you a fan?" I'm like, "It's a [ __ ] Trump.
He's going to build some gross crap."
Like what were you thinking about that?
>> mad about everything? You know, like so for But like yeah, I mean it's a stupid thing to do. What I'm doing I think is counterintuitive cuz it's like long-form content in an era where no one has any attention span for any When I would see like Subway takes, I'm like, "That's a great business." I'm like, "Yeah, he's just like uh he does the take. You churn them out." It won't eclipse people's attention span. I'm like, "That guy's smart." I'm like doing I'm doing [laughter] like a Dick Cavett Show talk show on YouTube. But what's wild is that the money is now in like the like YouTube gives a greater push, for example, to like the two three-hour videos, those super long shows. The trick is you might need to be a little bit worse at it so people don't notice that it's going on.
And then it's the play It's It's It's an extension of the Planet Fitness $5 a month model. Promise you, if I go on YouTube and I see something that says two hours there, I'm not clicking on it.
But that's But that's But that's that's what they are incentivizing in the algorithm. Just hoping it starts in the No, they they push a lot of that because all I see on my recommended I'll I always look at like the little time thing. And I'll be like, "Oh, I look at the thumbnail first." I'm like, "Okay, that's interesting." I'll look at the time. I'm like, "I don't have 30 minutes to look at that." Like What's the last great thing you've seen online? I mean, I watched this episode of The Right Time with Bomani Jones the other day. That [ __ ] was popping. I didn't even know it was that dope. Man, I couldn't believe it. I was like, "Wow, man. They They out here thuggin'." They got something going. Yeah, man. You know, I like I recorded it. It was like, "Yo, it's all right." Then I watched it. It was like, "Oh, [ __ ] show. You You did that, dog."
Hell yeah. 15 minutes of prime Steph Curry. That was pretty cool. That's great.
I watch a lot of those like ba- I watch a lot of those basketball breakdowns.
>> [laughter] >> 15 minutes of prime Steph is pretty good. That's That's a That's a That's close >> So it's wild though. The 30-minute video you can't do. I can't do a 15-minute highlight video. Oh, yeah. I That's what I'll put on. Like a highlight video I need to be much more punchy. In the morning before breakfast like during the season, I'm is going to be a season mix type of somebody. Like He couldn't tell us who he would pay to watch. He couldn't tell us that he watched 15 minutes of Steph Curry. I ain't have to pay to watch that.
It's a principle. Having YouTube though when you were like playing like growing up, you probably have access to just like watching ev- everything. It's probably like just like it's an advantage, I guess, for kids now. Yeah, and also too it's just like I'm just looking and I'm like, "Okay, I like that." Like, "Oh, I never thought like to do that." Or it's just certain different things I'm watching on YouTube where it's like, "Okay, like Now, I do still like to watch full games. I feel like that there's a art in that." And I just different things that you see. Like you don't want to see them scoring every single time. I want to know what didn't work as well. But it's just so easy to be like, "Okay, Luka Dončić pick and rolls." And then I have 20 minutes of film to watch. Yeah, like I like watching the the arc of a game. I will never be at a place where I don't want to watch the game. Like, "Oh, I'll just go watch all the buckets af- No, no. I can't pay attention to that fast to it. Like it doesn't It doesn't add. My brain can't really compute that.
>> Plus two like for me like I I would call myself a scorer. Like you got to watch like the reps that didn't work. And see like, "Okay, what did he What did the defense do that made him miss that shot?
Or did he just miss the shot?" Do you feel like you're in a weird way, your game like people young kids should not watch your Like you're a bad influence because of your range? No.
>> Like Like where you shoot from is probably like you It's good for you.
It's not good for most people. I think I'm actually a pretty good influence on the way you should play.
>> think he's a I think he's a Yeah. I get your [laughter] I get your point.
I think he should look up to you. If you're pulling from 29 ft But I will say this. But that's not good for most people. But I will say this right now.
Like one thing that I wish I kind of like would have done as a child is like not shoot from so far because I feel like my jump shot like my release would be a little bit higher than what it is.
Cuz you're shooting from the floor. I was shooting from my I was shooting from my chest my entire life. And so then as I got older, I was able to shoot it a little bit higher just off just based on trying to change it. But for the most part though, like I wish I would have stayed inside the three-point line growing up. And that's one thing that Steph talked about that he did was like his dad didn't let him go outside three-point line. Not blaming my dad.
Please do not get no Please do not get angry about that. But um yes, that's one thing I would say. Like because in my opinion, I don't love the way my jump shot looks. It goes in, so it's like, "All right, cool." But like I don't love the way it looks. I wish it was a little bit higher, but >> the wettest looking is I The best looking jump shot? Probably Booker. No, probably Book. Book?
Devin Booker. Just form wise. Devin Booker. Yeah. Yeah.
Who do you think is the farthest range?
Steph.
And Dame's up there. Yeah, I'd go Steph and Dame. I'd go Steph, Dame.
Um You're in that You're in that combo.
Yeah, I would like to say so.
Trae Young, like those guys. But all those guys have That's an interesting thing about the It's an interesting thing about the release point though cuz it changes It that changes your Nobody that shoots the ball really like at a high release point shoots the ball from far. It's too hard.
Is there anyone Is there anyone else your height with your release point?
Um not too many.
Not too many. I probably shoot lower than most. But I mean also too it's like I'm nitpicking because I see it every day. Like I watch a ton of my own film.
So like I'm nitpicking. Somebody else might look at it and be like, "Oh, I don't think it's that low." Or whatever. But like just to me in my like visual eye, I think it's a little low.
>> you say to the to the question about what When people ask them about like if like a kid is like, "What What do I have to do to do your thing?" Like what do you say when someone's like, "What do I have to do to make the NBA?"
I think it'd be similar to the same thing with like what I would tell what they could probably tell somebody else with like starting media stuff is you got to be consistent. And that's the biggest thing. If you're not consistent in whatever you do, you're not going to be good at it unless you're just blessed with talent and athleticism.
Like you have to be consistent. You have to work really hard. And then you also have to control what you can control.
Like that was my biggest thing growing up is like I just made sure I worked really hard. Like no matter if I'm playing a lot or I'm not playing, like it doesn't matter. Like I need to work hard and consistently get better.
Like 1% every day. If I just worry about being better and putting this one penny in the piggy bank for the day, by the time it gets to five years down the road, I'm going to have a lot of money. So I I wasn't too worried about I didn't really try to compare myself to other people because I feel like when you compare yourself to people, you kind of you keep finding ways to diminish what you're doing. And I think self-talk is the most important thing for yourself. Like if you you know, talk down on yourself, you're you're never going to beat your your beliefs.
How How often do you have somebody be like, "Yo, you I need you to check out, you know, little man over here. He called. You need to watch him hoop. And then you get there and you realize he ain't no good at all. Yeah, that a lot.
Like have you seen this clip that was bouncing around about a month ago? Miles Davis was on some TV show in Philadelphia.
>> saw that. And they had these kids play a trumpet for Miles Davis.
Oh my god. And then I don't know who got this bright idea that you So Miles Davis and this is old Miles Davis. So he is just not a good person at this point. He has chronic He has B. Yeah, he saw us just like that. And it's like so So you know, so what do you have to say to the little The little fellow is so nervous, right?
He's played his heart and Miles is like, "So what do you tell him?" "He needs to practice. He know how he sound?" He points at him and says, "He knows how he sounds." And just gives him this scathing critique of like an 8-year-old playing the trumpet. Like what he playing? You know he need to be in E flat. He was madder at the show, I think, than the kid. But he was taking it out on these like 8-year-olds. He knows how he sound. All right, I don't hate it. I don't hate it because you're either going to create somebody who's going to be great or he's going to quit.
So I would say this, the only part of it that I hated was that it was live on television. Yeah, I could I could I could I could probably >> Yeah, he could have been a little delicate and then hit him after and let him know. But it wasn't like he was like, "Young man, you need He's referring to him in the third person directly in front of him." All the things that he needs to do. And I was just like I mean That's the That's the That's the Marvin Gaye story. No, it's tough. And you remember stuff like that.
Like Like as many times Like there was times when I was a kid there was certain things that happened and it's like, "Okay, I'm going to remember that. I'm going to use that as fuel later on."
Like Just by online. And that was one thing my dad also was would also harp on me.
He was like, "Look, either you're going to be great or you're going to quit.
Like I'm going to try to make you quit."
Like I'm going to try to make you so mentally tough that you're going to want to quit. But if you don't quit, you're going to be good.
And I feel like that carries on with Like with kids, I feel like a lot of kids nowadays are just coddled and like in such a bubble. Like they don't Like they get to NBA and they're just entitled. Like That's the biggest thing that I see right now with kids. There's so much entitlement. You know what I mean? Hold on. We need to rewind back to when you were talking about me talking saying old head stuff. No, I I was And then here we go. He's He's He's He's just like, "Boy, >> [laughter] >> yeah, kids today. They ball with somebody on third base. They don't know how good they got it. Boy, they need to learn."
>> joke about it because >> [laughter] >> I'm one of y'all.
I'm a old head.
He's old now. Yeah, I [laughter] was like, "Okay, just as long as there's SOME SELF-AWARENESS ABOUT WHAT JUST TOOK PLACE." NO, that's why I joke about it because I'm a old head at heart. Like I really I feel like I have a old soul. So I was like That's why I'm like, "Don't get Don't get too mad at me."
He was friends with the guy I I hate to be that guy, but I just had to check.
You know what I'm saying? Make sure you understand. No, I That's one thing I feel like I am is very self-aware. I know I'm old. Adam don't know this. I saw Troy in the lobby of the hotel in Houston last year. And he said that somebody pulled up on him after and was like, "Was that your dad?"
Talking about me. Well, that's cool. You look like my dad.
>> you do look like his dad.
>> [laughter] >> Like literally. They mean that literally. No. No, you actually look like him. Like if we pulled up and it was you guys Okay, see that part That part is okay. It just sounded like they was unking me. And I have a >> [laughter] >> I have a And my dad is 6'3". Okay. Okay, see He's a He's a good-looking guy. Like it's a this it's a compliment.
[laughter] Look. Look. Look. Look. Next time I'm in Durham, I'm going to need to highlight and we take a picture.
>> So you know like I'm not Like I'm saying it's not even like I'm saying I'm saying it. I'm saying it.
I'm saying it. I'm saying it. I'm saying it. I'm saying it. I'm saying it. I'm saying it. I'm saying it. I'm saying it.

>> life right there. That's not all That's not you. But you were on a heater You were on a heater with Zoe Kravitz. I was like I couldn't believe it. I was like, "God, this is the one moment." Great pull, by the way. This clearly shows that you're better at guessing who black people look like. She does look like Lisa Bonet. That's her mother.
>> [laughter] >> That's crazy though. That's not on you though cuz that's good that's good flow.
Like you was flowing. I think about it still. I have I have I mean it's literally anybody I don't know how you don't get offended. [laughter] I still think about it. It's a great crossroads in your life. No, no, no. I still I still I still think about it.
There's nothing How dare she? There's [laughter] nothing like the I had a chance at blank and didn't fully realize it on some level. I didn't blow it. I didn't blow it, but like You didn't blow it. No, no, no. But like at first but the the the pit in my stomach was like you just said a black person looks like another black person. What would you have said? She looked like a Mexican?
They looked exactly like one another.
They do. That's what I'm saying. You You You You But it's a faux pas. It's a IT'S A SOCIAL FAUX PAS. IT'S OKAY to compare black people to other black people if they look like the person that you're talking about. I just feel like you got to know somebody You got to know somebody for a certain amount of time before you can risk pulling out the comps thing. I would I would say I would say that I would say that I would say that I would say that Or you just got to nail it with a great presentation.
You were right. Like I said, you were not in the wrong here. I I smashed it. I pulled up from like him. [laughter] It was a poor It was like, "Yeah, I do, but I'm not talking to you anymore." She She It all because you didn't She was kind of famous at the time.
>> [laughter] >> This is like 10 12 years ago. 10 years ago. Yeah, so she was like, "You know who I am?" or something. I thought I think she thought I was like trolling her maybe.
Or if she Maybe she thought like like Was it her party? No, I don't know where I was I was in a hood.
Yeah, no.
It was the best It was the best 10 minutes of my life. I was when I was at Pablo during Fashion Week but didn't know it was Fashion Week. And so we wound up somewhere and I I couldn't look like more of a herb. And we wound up being photographed and in the New York Times during this party. And my quote under under my picture was, "I really wish I had known it was Fashion Week before I left the house." But that's the most alpha [ __ ] Is you walk in you you look like don't Yeah, I was dressed like an alpha. Like you are correct. I would have been much better off in just a hoodie cuz I would have looked like I just didn't give a [ __ ] You do it the Jared Allen style. You roll up just wearing your team Yeah, see that was the problem [laughter] with him was his [ __ ] was too normal, right? Like he needed to either put a little gangster with it or whatever. He looked like Al the tool man Portland. The outfit thing you think it's it's on the way out? The total fits?
Are you Or are you cover yourself as a total fits guy? He's a fashion guy. I wouldn't say all that. I just like to wear clothes. I just think it's alpha if like you're just like I'm I'm wearing the stuff that I got for free from the team. I mean yeah, it's >> [laughter] >> It's It's really preference. It's just like You're at Fashion Week wearing Cleveland.
Don't you think the fit thing also matter Like if you're walking into MSG, you wearing something different than you're walking into Portland. Yeah. Even a big game though. Even in a big game.
>> for me I It's more so I look good, feel good, play good type of thing. Like I just feel better in a good fit. And if I'm walking in it's my sweats. Like it's just not like I'm not really trying or whatever. What about nice sweats?
No, I wear nice sweats. I feel great in good sweats. No, I I have good pairs of sweats like also too, but it's just like, you know, I feel like since during the season I don't really go out like that. And I do like to wear clothes. I like to get fly. Like The only time is for the game. Like that's the only time I can really put on an outfit cuz any other time like I'm at the house. That makes sense. I'm not doing anything. So it's like, all right. Like has me It's like I'm looking forward to like putting on these clothes.
What's the craziest fit?
What? That you've had?
I don't I mean what you mean by exactly crazy? What's your All right, what's your fit you're most proud of? I mean I make all my like I You make clothes? No, I'm saying That's my hat. That is my hat though.
I I'll wear it. I'll wear it. I'll wear it.
It was a fan It's a friends and family run that I had been like 3 years ago.
Sorry, bro. I don't have any more. And and I as your father did not receive one. Did not know you, man. Crazy. I mean Oh, you ain't got You ain't got the test back yet, huh? He just came back.
You ain't got the results. [laughter] He just came back. You can connect You just signed an extension.
>> [laughter] >> At that point you At that point you guys were not a good term. It was a Where you guys were on Maury, right?
Yo, Maury Tell them about Yeah, Maury there was a an episode cuz I was I was prepping for the show that I just would go down a rabbit hole and just watch paternity test like boot camp. The phobias The phobias one is like the That's some of the best [ __ ] But Maury had a guy paternity test for twins and uh he was the father of one of them.
That is great television. Like whoever in the back was like here's how we going to freak it. We're going to make him dad of one twin. Yeah, apparently it's like a a one in a like a million zillion chance, but if it's a in close proximity to another I don't even know how you respond to that.
>> have fraternal twins with two different fathers. You know what's crazy, too?
It's nuts. I think a part of my YouTube searches is Maury you're not the fathers. I don't like the ones where they say you are the father. They're not They're not as I hate those ones. I like when they're not.
>> [laughter] >> But I I I remember the first time in my life Cuz there there there's so many backflips. They're so acrobatic these these not the fathers.
>> [laughter] >> They're just busting.
They're dude I asked him he really didn't like this, but I asked him I was like do you ever wish you were like partying with the guys have consoling >> [laughter] >> Cuz he used to have to go backstage and be like it's all right. We're going to find the father.
I feel like it stays up cuz they go back to the same exact spot. It's that same chair every single time.
>> Yeah, the chair. It's one chair every single time.
Did you ask him It's such an interesting life to have like your job is to do that every day. Well, he was like a yeah, he was like a real like newsman before that.
>> I think it's also worth noting on Maury like I watched whatever show that was the scandal show about the Dr. Phil show. And all the terrible stuff the Dr. Phil show was doing with these people. There's never been a Maury exposé. Apparently he treats people very very well. The vibe I got from hanging out with him is he treats people very well. Because on paper it would be rife for an exposé.
>> Yeah, yeah. But apparently not. Yeah, he I guess yeah, I've only heard good things.
My friend this guy you know Joe Mandi?
Oh, yeah. Yeah, the writer? Yeah, he was an intern there. He was telling me what it was like his first job in New York and like he'd pick up the phones and people would be like hello Maury and he'd be like I'm just the intern.
>> [laughter] >> Hey Maury.
I'm Patrick. Have you seen the clip of Maury interviewing his wife and talking about the dude she slept with before she met him? No. Including Warren Beatty.
It's the wildest [ __ ] cuz he's doing it like a like a Maury Povich interview.
That's the other thing he has the most elite girl of all time ever. I mean she's like the first like was she the first female news network anchor?
>> I think she was the first big Yeah, female anchor. She's so impressive too.
Yeah, he scored.
>> He could talk about his wife previously having sex with Warren Beatty with a certain like chuckle that I personally would not be capable of. It was very telling about what sort of man Maury He's a cool guy. Yeah, he's like yeah, it's all He's like yeah, man Warren Beatty. That's the That's you know, we we we we roll the same.
Um anything else?
What are you working on this summer?
I can't tell you. Why? Is it a surprise?
It's a surprise.
>> to do something for Wimby, man.
We got to we can't we that tree You have to get the leg surgery, dude.
You have to just go He's out for a year.
>> Go see Go see him. And then also not be able to run and jump correctly.
>> [laughter] >> He's out for a year and he comes back and he's 7'1. He's 7'1 and he's like what? I didn't do what?
>> [laughter] >> I was doing rehab.
They're like how'd you get this idea?
>> was a hamstring. I had a hamstring issue.
It's just coming back.
>> [laughter] >> Coming back like a little Go ahead and touch that wood like substance.
>> player ever gotten plastic surgery while they're in league? No. Not that I know of.
Definitely not a a leg extender surgery.
Yeah, yeah. I feel like that would be against the rules.
Why?
I mean if you can't take steroids you can't go get leg surgery.
>> [laughter] >> the leg joint by Go ahead. Go ahead as soon as you come back he in every ball screen. Come on.
