Humans do not actually perceive temperature directly; instead, our bodies sense the rate of heat transfer between objects and our skin. Materials that conduct heat quickly (like metal) feel colder than materials that conduct heat slowly (like wood), even when both are at the same actual temperature. This is why metal countertops feel cold while wooden boards feel warm in the same kitchen, and why foods like melted cheese burn our mouths while pizza crust does not—the burning sensation comes from rapid heat transfer, not the actual temperature of the food.

Deep Dive
Of all your senses, your sense of temperature is the biggest liar. 🌡️Hinzugefügt:
You think you can feel temperature?
Yeah, no, you absolutely cannot. Touch a steel countertop and a wooden chopping board in the same kitchen. Steel feels cold. Wood feels warm. They are literally the exact same temperature.
Steel conducts heat fast. It yanks warmth straight from your hand, so your brain freaks out and screams cold. Wood is a poor conductor, so it feels neutral, almost cozy. Same trick happens in your mouth. Melted cheese on pizza stores a ridiculous amount of heat and straight-up glues itself to the roof of your mouth. You cannot spit it out fast enough. The crust? Mostly air pockets.
Cools down almost instantly. Same goes for caramel, hot pie filling, melted chocolate. They don't burn you because they're hotter. They burn you because of what they're made of. Here's the thing though, your body doesn't actually feel temperature. It feels the rate at which heat moves. Fast transfer feels cold or burns. Slow transfer feels totally fine.
You've never felt a single accurate temperature in your entire life. Every sensation has been just your body guessing. So next time you grab something metal in winter, now you know.
And next time you burn your mouth on pizza, you were warned. What's the worst thing that's ever burned your mouth?
