Modern extradition and forensic rigor have effectively eliminated the concept of a safe haven for fugitives. This case proves that in a hyper-connected legal landscape, distance is no longer a defense against scientific certainty.

And this story is a follow-up to another murder that took place last year. It's about the murder of Gregory Castillo Volquez. And he was murdered on a North London street at 5:00 a.m. on Monday the 13th of January, 2025. Thank you to Dave Nathan for his coverage from the scene.
And also the police response following the murder where raids took place in the estates surrounding the road. This week three men have been convicted for his murder. And detectives in the Metropolitan Police's specialist crime unit said they pieced together the circumstances of the incident analyzing hours of CCTV footage and gathering forensic evidence to locate, extradite, and arrest the defendants. The guilty verdicts were read at Southwark Crown Court yesterday on Wednesday the 20th of May, 2026 following an 8-week trial.
Benito Conesa, 20 years old, and 22-year-old Carlos Acuna Matumba were extradited from Spain and convicted of murder alongside Italian national Luigi Santana, who was 22 years old. Gregory was 26 and he was pronounced dead in the middle of the of the street after going out for a night with his friends in South London. They traveled north where he was attacked on Tiverton Road in Haringey. The investigation found out that Gregory knew the three men that attacked him. Of the three, Conesa was detained five days after the attack in Swansea, Kinesis' trainers were seen on CCTV and were seized upon his arrest and forensic evidence confirmed they were covered in Gregory's blood. The other two killers, Matumba and Santana, succeeded in leaving the country, but the pair were traced to Spain and were respectfully extradited by Metropolitan police officers in August and October of 2025. Both Matumba and Santana were captured on CCTV throwing blows on Gregory with a machete and a crutch.
Gregory's postmortem examination said that he had 22 stab wounds. Many of these were caused by a long knife, as well as bruises that were caused by a blunt object. And forensic evidence supported the footage and Santana's bloody footprints were identified on the crutch and large knife. Detective Inspector Jim Barry, who led the investigation, said, "Our skilled team of officers showed huge tenacity to build a solid case with undisputable forensic evidence that resulted in three violent men being taken off the streets.
It's this hard work that is enabling the force to secure a positive outcome from 95% of our murder investigations. I hope this result offers a morsel of justice and closure for Gregory's family, who have lost a dad, brother, and son." A fourth man called Gabriel Gonzales was found not guilty of murder in the same case. And there's very much a lot of similarities to do with the last case where it was based in a block. It was a spur of the moment decision. Several men then fled to Spain thinking they could evade justice. But as it shows time and time again, extradition treaties with a lot of countries nowadays are very easy to do. So, we'll all just send our condolences to the family of Gregory and we'll definitely keep you updated on the sentencing for all of those involved in this story.
