Trauma survivors often exhibit defensive behaviors (such as pulling away, looking down, or shutting down) when approached by others, even when those individuals are trying to help, because their nervous system cannot distinguish between current safety and past traumatic situations; this trauma response is an automatic survival mechanism that bypasses the thinking brain and triggers fight-or-flight responses, making it essential for others to recognize these signs and approach with patience and understanding rather than taking the behavior personally.

Dexter S5 Ep 5 | First Time Watching | Therapist REACTSAdded:
Oh my gosh.
No. Dexter season 5 episode five. Five.
Five. Lumen is here.
First blood. What a great title for an episode. I think Lumen. It's probably not a far-fetched guess to say Lumen and Dexter are gonna team up. And you know, he teamed up before with Miguel.
So, I don't know. I don't know how this is going to go. Miguel was much more impulsive, reactive. I don't know who Lumen is, but I think she comes from a wealthy family. I think she comes from a lot of trauma, obviously.
And I think she is going to be a resource for him and he's going to find a way to still work what he does into his life. But how do you introduce Luma to anybody in your life? Or do you?
>> We all have something to hide, some dark place inside us. we don't want the world to see.
So, we pretend everything's okay, >> wrapping ourselves in rainbows. And maybe that's all for the best.
>> Because some of these places are darker than others, >> the old Jim days. This has got to be Jimie or something like it where we'd take our little children, they'd play in different places and at the end we'd hold this big parachute thing up and then we'd all go down and cover ourselves inside it with the kids and it would be like this big uh domed area. It was such a cool exp.
This brings back memories for the boys even though they're all grown up. And there's Dexter with just blank look on his face like what are we doing? He's got so much else going on, but I don't know how he incorporates regular life.
There's so many issues in Dexter at this point. I could go on and on with it with Aster and Cody custody Harrison.
You know, his dad did him such a disservice. I've said it to this day. I think Harry groomed him to be this guy he is. I think he had tendencies towards this, but I think a lot of therapy could have helped this a lot. and how Harry was with them and how the help the extter could have gotten could have changed it. I think he was groomed into being a killer and covering it up and Harry was fed off of seeing him do that and also controlling him and coming down on him when he would do something wrong, encouraging when he was really down, all that stuff.
>> I want to say >> Oh, it's okay.
>> Oh, it's okay.
>> Looks like someone was playing a little rough.
>> That's a little too familiar. Let's get a >> But I use a scalpel. All you have are your fingers wiped clean. Not even a year old. You're already destroying evidence and having to flee the scene of the crime.
>> It's so funny how they weave that in.
>> Every time you see me, you look disappointed like you were hoping to find an empty table.
>> Guilty.
>> Yeah, because he wants his I mean, she's going to read right through him, I think, with who she is and what she's been through. She's such a good actress, but he wants his life back. He wants secrecy. He wants aloneeness. He wants to do this in a certain way. But when he introduces someone else to it, that's part of the problem. You are an extra element I have to account for.

>> If you had something horrible happen to you, could you just forget about it and move on?
>> I would want to.
>> What if you couldn't?
>> So much. Do you really want to help me get past this?
>> Help me find those guys and kill them.
>> Anybody else hearing that in the restaurant?
>> You knew what you were doing. Usual.
>> Thanks, >> man. Can we go outside? Can we walk somewhere? Like, this is not the place to ask.
>> If you're not going to help me, why do you keep coming back here?
>> I'm trying to help you.
>> Got to be careful. And this is a great example of trauma and PTSD.
CPTtsd like a lot of complex trauma here wrapped on top of each other and stacked that you see him just it's good to know in life it's not so much analyzing in this show but the way he reached out and got her to stop doing that much like a parent would do like quit fiddling or whatever you know to get her to stop with the sugar packets but it's it's kind of an OCD thing for her to deal with the trauma and to cope a lot of shaking all the scars on her hands when he reaches to her to stop just settle down listen to to me, she backs away and it's a trauma response because of all the horrible treatment that has been done to her. So, she goes into that childlike state. You see that hands go down, she looks down away. These are all indicators of so much trauma that she can't trust it. You know, if it's a child who's comfortable with their parent and doesn't get like armed by them or threatened by them very much that the kids would just, oh well, just go on to something else. But she shuts down, hands under, eyes down, and a fear state because of what's happened to her before. And she doesn't really know her her nervous system doesn't know if this guy's actually going to do the same thing or if he's going to be good. So trauma goes in brain stem to the cortex, you know, thinking brain up here, but it's the last thing that it gets to. It goes into the brain stem, fight or flight. And she's stuck there with this.
But I just want y'all to see that in life. If you ever see anybody who has a response like this, or if you feel it yourself, that is a trauma response from somewhere else, as if you're back in a dangerous place again. Watch this.
>> Minneapolis. Yeah, I use some miles.
>> Wow.
>> Fly away.
>> You really want to get rid of me, don't you?
>> Rejection.
>> Seems very dangerous at this point because she could say or do anything.
Like, she's a victim and she's escaped where she was, but she could go to the police and tell him everything she's been through, what she's seen, who did it. He's in a very dangerous spot right now. She could take this ticket and say, "Okay, you want me out of your life?
Fine.
She could literally go to the police and tell them everything. Not even here. She could go to Minneapolis and and do it there. And from a distance, he I don't know why Dexter has gotten sloppy. This partly I'm disappointed because I feel like Dexter's gotten sloppier and sloppier as this season's gone on. I love the season. I love Lumen in this character, but I feel like it's gotten sloppier. And I really liked him less and less because I think he's killing for different reasons now and too impulsively. I just feel like he's he's reaching, but she's kind of like, you're just wanting to get rid of me. You don't want to help me.
But isn't he putting himself in danger?
>> She took the ticket. Maybe this is one problem I can check off the list.
>> It's why I mention the way >> maybe it'll snow this week.
>> He just Yeah, snow. Right. It's not not going to check it off the list. There's the fire.
>> Got to get my ass in gear. I'm going to be late.
>> When once more >> I could take >> what part of late don't you understand?
>> Man, he is wanting a full-blown like party ride with her. I don't know if he wants relationship with her, but he wants more and more of her satiated just can't get satiated. And she is a, you know, crash in intensity passion to express feeling because she doesn't know how to do it healthily and normally. She has to do it through physical action and sex. Then it's the breakaway. I got to get out of here. This is why I mentioned kind of borderline tendencies with her because she can't do the intimacy. She can't do the connectedness and the closeness. She's got to get out.
>> I got to meet Batista at the hospital.
We're interviewing that kid Puenta sliced open.
>> Good luck with that. I'm running down leads and you're sitting around in your boxer shorts watching TV all day.
>> Oh, is that why you're like bald? Let me get the [ __ ] out of here cuz I'm taking a few days off.
>> Doesn't know why though.
>> This said I had too many days. I had to use him or lose him.
>> That's [ __ ] >> No argument here.
>> I got to go.
>> Hope doesn't get out.
>> If it's okay with you, we'd like to ask your son some questions.
See?
>> Yes. Gracias.
>> Gracias.
>> We were wondering if there's anything you can tell us about the man who injured you.
>> He seen him around, but he didn't know who he was. He doesn't remember anything else. He was really scared. Fente said he was going to kill him.
>> But why was he there?
>> Okay.
>> How did they end up in the same room together?
>> Lumen needs to stay away from the darkness. I, on the other hand, always need names for my table. And there are few people more deserving than Boyd Fowler's accompllices. No, my head's in 50 places. Msuka didn't even begin to keep up the case load.
>> Well, good luck getting the [ __ ] porn off your hard drive. He might have shown it to me. How was mommy and me Harrison break any hearts?
>> Mommy and me.
>> No.
>> Court, you find them attractive.
>> Do you? I mean, would you ever?
>> I would rather put a campfire out with my face.
>> So graphic.
>> She's going to stay on the ATM video surveillance while I track down the tattoo.
>> Let me see that again.
>> She still looks like a UFO to me. Who the [ __ ] knows, right?
>> The dragon lady represents the If you can't muster up the appropriate respect, I'm dropping the curtain.
>> When did you get this?
>> You know a little about this world.
>> I know a little. The person you want to talk to is my body artist, Michelangelo.
>> You're kidding. Michelangelo.
>> From the outside, a normal home is indistinguishable from the home of a monster who puts women in barrels.
Yeah, they don't even show, at least with this one, him getting rid of Boyd.
Like, just what what happened there? Cuz she he had Lumen, too.
>> There must be something around here that will point me to Boyd's accompllices.
Somebody's been here. Oh, great.
Blood.
>> Could find out who it is, maybe. I don't know.
>> They were going through Boyd's files.
>> Looks like the door's still locked, though.
Whoever Boyd was working with must have panicked, tried to cover up any trace of their existence. Amateurs.
>> No, man.
>> Here he is.
>> Freshly bathed.
>> My little brother used to bite people.
Bloody little cannibal. Now he's a vegetarian. Works for Greenpeace.
>> That's comforting.
>> Don't worry. You've got a little angel on your hands. Nothing can change that.
>> He's a good actor.
>> See you tomorrow morning.
>> Let me show you what I'm working on, son. your daddy in the criminal database.
>> Let me touch >> absolutely Minnesota.
>> Lumen and >> Oh, wow. She was there. She went back >> into house.
>> Was that part of the cuts on the hand there?
>> She beat me to it.
>> Wow. She knew something about what he had.
I mean, the curtains were ruffling when he knocked on the door, so somebody's got to be there. Look at this. Oh my gosh. That's a mini Dexter.
Not Vinnie. Maxi.
Wow.
>> This seemed like the product of a stable mind.
Well, Dexter isn't the product of a closet was the only place.
>> She's not a killer. She's not you. She's coming undone.
>> Got her blood stained on the hand.
>> Oh man. Bruner.
>> What's that?
>> This is a letter she took from Boyd Fowler's house from his ex- cellmate, Robert Bruner.
>> That's one she's going after.
>> Getting parrolled. She keeps going this way, she's going to get herself killed or thrown in jail, and you're going to be right there with her. She's going to bring you down.
>> I'm shocked she's not bringing Dexter down by just telling on them.
>> They switch seats.
>> You going to kill them? Is that it?
>> I'm sorry. You don't get to tell me what to do.
>> Getting stronger.
>> Asked for your help. You saved my life.
I'm grateful for that. But what I need from you right now is to leave me alone.
>> Don't touch me. H. Here we go again.
Same thing. Trauma response.
And this time she's getting stronger.
Last time she was weaker, more insecure.
Now she's stronger. Like I'm moving on with my life. He's not here to help me.
So you see that reaction. It's not that she thinks Dexter is dangerous. But when he grabs her like that, and this is trauma, she is brought back in her brain to the instances where she was traumatized, beaten, raped, abused, all of that. So know that about trauma whenever anybody's been through it and especially if this happens to somebody and you're like I don't even know what just happened like like say you don't know her story. That is a trauma response that comes from some other situation that she was in where she felt this way and you are no longer Dexter in this situation. You are a potential abuser. That's why she's reacting and pushing back.
>> These men put five women in barrels.
They're not going to want to be found.
Please stop this before it's too late.
>> What's crazy with this?
Why can't Dexter take his own advice?
Like, he's telling her, "Look, these are dangerous people. They put, you know, women in barrels. They're not going to want to be found. Stop before it's too late. Just just stop and that way you don't get into something you might end up in trouble for or worse."
Why doesn't he just stop? Why doesn't he finally just say, "I'm gonna stop and be a dad to my son Harrison. Try to be a dad to Aster and Cody. Try to live a normal life." Why doesn't he just do that? That's the whole question of this show. So, it's the part of me that's disappointed in Dexter that he's advising her to do the very thing he can't do.
>> Cool backdrop with that cargo ship.
>> She's not going to stop until she finds Brunner.
>> Love the police in a hotel.
My favorite color.
>> Help you, Sergeant.
>> Morgan has been all over me the last two days about Quinn.
>> What about Quinn?
>> The vacation he's being forced to take.
Feeling short-handed without her. To tell you the truth, we need Is there anything I need to know about my case with IA?
>> Is there anything I need to know?
>> Is she going to have to do something with the guy to get it erased?
>> That's what I'm thinking.
>> I'll see you tonight. Yeah.
>> Um, I might be late. Okay. So, I'll let you know. Okay.
>> I think he's trying to uh extort. Or is that too obvious?
Like, if you do this for me, I'll just make this go away. I pray that's not the case.
Here we go.
And hell.
>> Well, here's the guy you asked for, Robert Brunner. Nuh-uh. Like we agreed.
>> There you go. Abduction, torture, rape.
>> He's so big. Is he a year yet?
>> 10 months.
>> Year.
>> Man, 10 months already.
>> 7 years. Total Bridge is the perfect place for Brunner to hide in the dark.
But not from me. I've got to get to him before she does.
>> Tra love. Why don't you show her your dick?
>> Oh my gosh. That's >> disgusting. I have my ink and you have your man boots.
>> Well, expect my man boots up your ass if you're wasting my time.
>> Okay, >> Vincent. Now, what can I do you for?
>> Vincent, >> that's Michelangelo, >> one and only, >> how are you?
>> Good to see you.
>> Always good to see you.
>> You mind taking a look at something for us?
>> Any friend of sugars is a friend of mine?
>> Sugar.
>> Sugar.
>> Any idea what it means?
>> Crude, simplistic, but it's definitely an I. See? And that would mean I symbolize the third eye in our minds.
>> Thank you so much anyways.
>> Always for you.
>> I'm you.
>> Come see me anytime. Okay.
>> She likes her.
>> Thank you.
>> Okay, >> Deborah. Maybe a tattoo >> and some >> I'll be in soon. Bye.
>> Wow.
>> Dexter man treading on some dangerous territory.
>> The mother of Miami. They named this bridge after her in her honor. Now it's crawling with pedophiles and sex offenders.
>> So much for honor.
>> Mind if I watch?
>> Cube [ __ ] stay over by the tracks.
>> It's not why I'm here.
>> Then why is that?
>> Stuck up little coed and I had a legal disagreement concerning the meaning of the word consent.
>> Take a load off.
>> Brother, I need something else.
>> Good.
>> You from Miami?
>> He used to be. Guy I bunkked with lives down here now. Thought I'd let him show me the town and have some fun.
>> Did that fun include lumen?
>> That is until my parole officer, the [ __ ] started giving me [ __ ] about staying with someone from the joint.
Wound up here.
>> Beats a cell.
>> Barely.
>> Once my parole is done, [ __ ] Florida.
>> Believe me, that [ __ ] got every [ __ ] inch of my mother.
>> Oh my god.
>> This room was meant for Boyd, not his cellmate.
>> This one I don't understand.
Because how do you go from that campground under the freeway out of there with him being completely passed out? Does he carry him around like he's drunk and kind of like I'm just going to help him out of here?
Nobody's really asking questions. I know it's not a place where you're going to be like, "Hey." But still, he's in the middle of this campground. How's he going to get him up? Get him to the car.
It just seemed that seemed farfetched.
But here he goes. He's going right after him. And at night, this is at night where he told the nanny, "I'm going to be there. I'm going to be available. I'm going to be home." But it's at night.
Should be home, right?
>> Think about what you're doing. I am >> doing it for Lumen.
>> What are you saying?
>> Think.
Are you listening?
>> Voice in the head.
Okay.
>> Ankle monitor >> wearing an ankle bracelet. It couldn't have been him. She had the wrong guy. I was ready to kill him.
>> The sloppy part.
>> Now what do you do?
>> Now he's got to drop him back.
>> Robert Brunner isn't one of the men who hurt her.
>> But because he had an ankle monitor, he's no way he could have done that or they would have spotted him where he was.
>> Harry's right. I have to convince Lumen to do what I never could. Move on.
Oh, wow. You're >> home early? I sent her home. She said you were going to be working late.
>> Oh, don't mind. I grabbed a beer. What's he doing here?
>> Quen of all the one who's going after Dexter. Deb really gets herself in trouble. First the Bay Harbor Butcher, >> you know, who's Dexter's brother and now Quinn who's going after Dexter and thinks he's the one that's been >> Debac was just leaving.
>> What she said?
>> I will call you in the morning. Wow.
>> Who hate that, bro?
>> Kind of worn for gloves.
>> Good night. Thanks for the book.
>> Spotted him.
>> What was that about?
>> Slate.
>> He's going to have to take Quinn out one day.
>> Are you and Quinn?
>> Don't ask.
>> We're [ __ ] buddies. That's it. Will you please stop looking at me like that?
>> It's your life, Deb. Just don't bring him around when Harrison's here.
>> What's that supposed to mean? Mhm.
>> Well, he's had an impression.
>> What will rub off on him?
>> Just keep Quinn away from my son.
>> Fine.
>> That's all you're wrong about Quinn.
>> My son.
>> Not that bad.
>> Sorry. Long day.
>> Dinner's in the oven.
>> You mind if I um hop in the shower first?
>> Ooh, cuz you might have just done something >> on hell. Oh, >> why so late?
>> Budgets are due at the end of the month, so I'm going to >> I'll set the table.
It's not looking good.
This is not going to help his temper.
>> She was asking about Tuttle Bridge. I told her that is the last place she wants to be.
>> Going over there. So, she thinks it's him, too.
>> What the [ __ ] [ __ ] Nice. Where you going, baby?
>> Yeah, I see like no women around there.
Oh my gosh.
No.
No.
What are you doing?
He's wearing an ankle bracelet as part of his parole. If he leaves this place, it gets reported. I checked. He was here the whole time you were taken.
>> Yeah. Wouldn't they come to him now though, seeing that monitor and say, "Where were you?" And he's going to be like, "I don't know.
>> Never hurt you. You're about to murder the wrong man."
>> See, this is not too late. There's still no blood on your hands.
>> I just want to feel better.
>> I know.
>> I want all of this to go away.
>> Yeah. Back to your family. If you don't put this behind you, I swear what you're feeling now will only get worse.
>> She can't put it behind you, though.
It's always there, man.
>> Okay. Okay. Okay. I'll go.
Okay.
>> You want to make a bet why this one was taking a lot of cash out of the ATM?
Gambling, hookers, drugs. You're very cynical. It's called being a detective.
You have to put positive energy out into the universe.
>> It's not Deborah.
Oh my gosh.
>> [ __ ] >> I get a little bit confused on, you know, I'm so invested right now in Lumen and Dexter that I'm almost not focusing a whole lot on this Deborah thing because I feel like we got main pieces right now. You got Deborah and this officer investigating because Quinn's not there.
You got Quinn who is honing in on Dexter and being pushed out for a minute.
You've got Dexter and Lumen.
I mean, you got a side thing of Laguerta and Anel with what's happening there with him.
That's a minor thing to me, but uh I think he's going to go to that motel at 2 o'clock. So, I'm so invested in Dexter and Lumen. I can't focus on this, but you get these flies. There's dead bodies in there.
Little help here. Anytime you're ready, >> man. Deb, >> I'm sorry, but that would have to be some of the worst smell rank you.
>> Yeah, I think I'm going to throw up. And you need to tell Msuka and Dexter that they need to bring a bug kit and some [ __ ] crackers.
>> You good?
>> So gross. No, I'm not good.
>> There he goes.
He doesn't even know what room or anything.
>> Hey, let him go. This is a sting.
Let him go.
What just happened?
>> You wear a wire? No [ __ ] I thought >> what? That I was [ __ ] him.
>> What am I supposed to think? You barely talked to me.
>> It is the truth. Anel has every right to say, "What am I supposed to think?
You've been different lately. You've been shady. You're not telling me information. You are staying out late and then want to jump in the shower before eating." Like there's just those are just subtle concerns for and then especially with the guy talking about her being good at this. I I don't know. I I think it's shady. I think that dude's shady. But what do I know about him? So why is somebody at her position put in a sting? She is so far up the chain from this. She should not be in a sting operation >> unless he said if you do this for me I'll wipe the slate clean with on hell.
>> I a needed my help to bust a narcotics cop on the tank. And I said yes. Why? To close THE BOOKS ON YOUR BAR FIGHT.
>> So >> why didn't you tell me?
>> Why didn't you trust me?
>> Maria IC.
>> Here's the eye.
It was a [ __ ] nightclub.
>> I'm going to go deal with the press.
>> Nice to have you back, Dexter.
>> Good to be back, Lieutenant.
>> We part all together once again. One big happy family. Hey, Dexino.
>> Dexterino, >> just do your normal life, Dexter. That's all you need to do.
>> I can pay you back for the ticket. I'll send you some money.
>> Except >> I still don't know who to send it to.
>> Yeah, exactly.
>> He's not telling her.
>> Dexter Morgan. It's not necessary. The ticket.
>> He's telling her his name.
>> Doing the right thing. Your parents will be happy to see you.
>> I tried to call them, but I they couldn't.
>> Just give us some time.
>> I can't tell them what happened to me.
You're the only one who knows. trauma bond.
>> You have my number. Call me if you need talk about it.
>> Wow.
>> Thank you.
>> Relief.
>> Make sure everything's out of your pockets. Jewelry, belts.
Oh, I can't stand all that.
>> Except for the map. Ma'am, >> is there a problem?
>> I can't let you through to your gate list. You consent to a hand search.
>> Oh, no trauma. Oh, no. This It's a female.
>> I need you to stay still.
>> Spread your legs.
>> Close your eyes. Close your eyes. Look down. Don't look at people.
Going to pass out.
That's a pretty extreme hand search.
>> She made it. Wow, that's really invasive.
>> You got your lead. Congrats.
>> Yeah, we stake this place out. They show up and then we take these Santa no dicks down. I'm surprised Quinn at this point since he's got time off isn't trying to follow Dexter or follow up on the What is he doing? He's got those gloves. Like where is he going? See him to go to the airport with his chick? I don't know.
>> For good. Now get your ass moving. I'm starving.
>> On my way. Thanks for the queros, stud.
>> Oh lordy. Heard what happened.
>> [ __ ] those.
>> I don't know if I should be considering who's sitting in front of me making the offer.
>> What are you talking about? Have I ever [ __ ] you over? No, but Legua just taught me there's always a first time.
Quinn, you [ __ ] with the bull, you get the horn. You understand?
>> Yeah.
>> Do you?
>> These two are peas in a pod. They deserve each other.
>> You got a name?
>> Dexter Morgan.
>> The [ __ ] kind of name is Dexter?
>> Huh? Back to mommy and me.
>> Rainbows. Is there darkness in Harrison?
Or is it just my own fear being >> darkness in Harrison? Nothing but light and joy.
>> Was the one who scratched Teddy? He was right next to him. Tell me about what happened to that boy will never be the same.
>> There's nothing wrong with my son.
>> Man, how horrible.
Ah, those ladies.
>> You'll always be my son. Whatever we have to face, we'll face together. Okay.
>> Ow.
>> Scratching Dex.
>> Hello, man. Where you headed this afternoon? Right on that spot.
>> Going back home. I thought Lumen was going to be around for a while.
>> Welcome to Miami.
>> What?
Oh, I can't believe what I'm seeing here.
Lumen says, "Nope. After the answer."
Nope. Going back.
Not taking the flight to Minneapolis. I am staying in Miami. I cannot believe what I just saw. I thought she was going home. Thought she was off the show. I thought Lumen was going to be toast, cooked, done. Nope.
There is so much flying around right now just with what Dexter's going to do when he finds out Lumen's still there. What Dexter's going to do when he finds out Quinn is after. What Deborah's going to do when she finds out Quinn is after Dexter.
Aguerta, Hanel, all these different situations that and then the whole Quinn with this seen that guy in movies before I think with this low life. Oh, this is just about to get juicy. Remember, it's not real therapy. It's just Tom break it down.
