Georgian merchants' houses, such as Peckover House built in 1722, served as symbols of wealth and social status, featuring elaborate plasterwork, fine furnishings, and expensive wallpapers that demonstrated the owner's prosperity, even among families like the Quaker Peekovers who valued simplicity but displayed their affluence through high-quality craftsmanship and architectural details.

We Found a Hidden World Inside This 300-Year-Old Georgian Mansion... PECKOVER HOUSE 🏰☀️🪷🌳⚘️Ajouté :
Coming up in today's episode, we visit Whis Beach in Cambridge where we take a look at the most beautiful Georgian merchants's house built in 1722.
Afterwards, we explore the stunning gardens.
>> Good morning, guys, and welcome back to the channel. Uh, for the keen eyed amongst you, you'll notice we're still wearing the same clothes, and that's because we've come along to the house >> and that's at Whiz Beach in Cambridge.
And it's literally 20 minutes from the place you would have seen on our last video, the tulip fields. So, we couldn't resist coming along to take a look. So, if you'd like to see some of this beautiful Georgian merchants house and its fabulous gardens, let's go.
Welcome to Whisbe. It is the capital of the fence and today we're stepping inside the crown jewel of the north brink peekover house.
This house symbolizes the very peak of Georgian elegance. Built in 1722, it was home to the Pec family who were so rich that they even had their own bank and they ran it from here their home.
The family were Quakers who are known for their plainness and simplicity. But Peekover is anything other than plain or simple with its superb plaster work and beautiful furnishings.
Shall we call it an extravagant simplicity?
The entrance hall and staircase is stunning and it is the first thing you see upon entering with its wonderful woodwork. The Peekovers did not originally build this house. In fact, they bought it from the Medworth family, but went on to live in it for over 150 years.
The Medworths were the ones who originally installed all the beautiful details. It was the Pecvers who went on to keep them. The racoo style plaster work would have been the equivalent of someone today showing off their 8K TV set. It was all about status.
Even though Quakers, the Pecvers were quietest Quakers. They did not have music or art that depicted people, but they loved highquality craftsmanship.
Originally, no portraits of themselves were in the house, but they did have the most expensive wallpaper that money could buy at the time.
We were also told that at one point in time they kept a pet bear. And not only a bear, but Alexander Pekco had a pet parrot that allegedly could swear and swear in multiple languages.
The house was originally known as Bank House. They ran their business Pec Harris and Co. from the premises.
The family was so trusted locally that during the banking panics of the 1800s when other banks were failing, the PCO was put a massive pile of gold coins in the window just to show everyone that they were still fabulously wealthy. the ultimate flex to let the neighbors know that they were definitely not in any trouble.
The pecovers were also massive philanthropists.
They helped to abolish slavery, funded schools, and basically built half of Whisbe. Alexander going on to become Baron Pecver, the first Quaker appear to sit in the House of Lords.
The house is without a doubt a real Georgian treasure, but the garden is also something else. It feels secret in places, almost forestlike, and all hidden away in the center of a bustling town. It is 2 acres of pure Victorian gardening obsession complete with its own orry and 300year-old orange trees.
So we've just been inside Peekover house and it is every bit as beautiful as we remember it from last time. And uh we were fortunate that it was very quiet in there so we were able to get a really good look around. Uh we've come outside now to take a look at the gardens and the gardens really are a hidden gem.
They're absolutely beautiful. So if you'd like to see some of the gardens here at Peekover, stick with us.
So the reason this garden is so huge is because the PCO has actually purchased the house on either side of their own which enabled them to create this enormous garden right in the middle of the town. So it really is a paradise hidden in plain sight.
Well, this really is a paradise.
I don't think we could have picked a better day to come and take a look. And uh as Ants just said, I don't think there's anybody else in the garden at the moment.
So, we've uh just discovered a very quaint little summer house with a thatched roof. Pretty sure the last time we came we didn't see this. We're going to seize the moment and have a bit of lunch in the cafe, I think. While it's quiet, aren't we? See what there is.
>> Yeah, it looks like a big cafe.
stick over there. Yeah, we like a plastic. Look at the uh the roof on this place.
>> So, what have we got here, Aunt? We didn't go for the Cornish pasti, did we?
We gone for I don't know what it's called.
>> Cheese and ham croc.
>> Yeah. which is a bit like cheese on toast with ham. We've had these before at National Trust.
>> It is. They're very tasty.
>> Tasty.
Well guys, thank you for joining us on this uh little tour of Peekover House in Whis Beach. Uh we hope you enjoyed that.
We certainly did, didn't we?
>> Yes, it's a lovely little house, isn't it? Very little. It's bigger than our house.
>> We'd love to live in it, wouldn't we?
