[00:00:52]As you can see, these are some old boards here. I managed to pick up some old framing board somebody was using just to save a dollar.

[00:01:09]The preparation that's involved when you're building a stand, it's uh it's actually a lot of work, a lot more than people realize if you've never done it.

[00:01:17]It certainly adds to the whole DYI hunt.

[00:01:20]I had the option of using a ladder stand and I did use that the last couple of years, but it's only good for one person. And also when you're trying to film, it just makes it so much uh more comfortable and a little more forgiving with the bears if you have a some sort of a shelter up there. We'll say So, like I said, a DYI hunt. This is all part of it, trying to get the gear in here. I was actually up here last week and I started the stand. So, I've actually got the worst part of it done.

[00:02:24]The base is down and the legs are up.

[00:02:27]So, I'm just going to try and put some sides on it now to give me a little bit of protection from the weather and from the bears. Uh, so they don't see us as easy. So, you can see the orange strap there that's attached to my ladder stand. That's what I used last year, and I just decided to upgrade.

[00:03:39]This is Delin's first trip to this bear stand since we built uh we built the enclosure. He was in school when I built this and never got a chance to come up.

[00:03:47]So, we're here at a bait and he's going to check out the sand.

[00:03:59]>> So, what do you think of that bear stand compared to the other two that we have?

[00:04:03]>> I think that one it's it's looks kind of like the graveyard one. It's like the box type, but I think that one it is like a little more roomy in it.

[00:04:13]>> Yeah. But it looks kind of close because like for the graveyard, that lot right there is on this side, not the back.

[00:04:21]>> Oh yeah.

[00:04:22]>> So that kind of makes it like >> That's true. I never thought of that.

[00:04:26]Yeah.

[00:04:26]>> That like that's why I kind of think like it's kind of close. But the graveyard one's definitely taller than that one.

[00:04:32]>> Right on. But that's a pretty good stand. I like it. This is actually of my three stands. This is my favorite area to hunt. Uh I haven't actually shot a bear on this one yet, but uh hopefully this year we will. We were going to hunt last night and we just simply ran out of time with all the stuff we were doing.

[00:04:46]And uh unfortunately the bear was actually here. The one that we're targeting, he was actually here last night. So whether or not Develin gets out now for my next hunt, I'm not sure if that's going to happen. But uh either way, we'll uh see how it goes.

[00:05:21]Like I said before, I always take out uh I always take out my garbage as much as I can.

[00:05:27]>> You have to screw in the dealers getting out of it open.

[00:05:30]>> Yeah, cuz they had it the lid. The hole was too big, but they broke it. I had it screwed all the way shut and they tore it.

[00:05:39]There you go.

[00:05:40]>> Yeah. Well, I'll just try back if you can get it.

[00:05:56]Say sugar and corn syrup and honey. It's a big block of candy I made and put in a pipe.

[00:06:05]And I've got a little concoction here to make some candy for the bears. It's a hard candy when it sets up and it'll keep them coming back as long as they can't drag away your container. So, what I've got here is a piece of PVC pipe and I'm going to refill these containers.

[00:06:20]So, then when I get in the woods, I'll just take the bottom off and the candy will be in there for the beers. So, what Deon is going to do now is he's going to throw in two cups of sugar. throw it in the pot. And so we've got regular sugar and we've got 2/3 a cup of corn syrup.

[00:06:42]You want to scrape that out? Maybe we do.

[00:06:47]And we have 3/4 a cup of cold water.

[00:06:52]1/4 cup of honey. I'm just going to guess the honey.

[00:06:57]Should be good.

[00:06:59]We're going to stir that mixture up really good.

[00:07:03]Then we're going to put it on the stove.

[00:07:05]We're going to heat it up till it comes to a boil. And then we're going to reduce the heat, heat it to 280° F. Then we're going to take it off and pour it in those containers. Got a thermometer here.

[00:07:20]And we got the nice consistency here.

[00:07:29]The only reason I'm pouring this in the cup over here is so that it's easier to pour into our bear containers. So, what we're going to do now is we're going to try and pour this in here. Delin, do you think it's going to work? I >> think there's going to be some leaking.

[00:07:51]>> So, we'll do this until these containers are full. And I've got a very smelly bag of uh snow crab shells. The bears don't really like to eat that, but they do certainly uh it draws them in with the smell. You can smell that a long ways.

[00:08:24]And right here, this is courtesy of one of the guys I work with all winter. He saves all of his cooking grease, bacon grease mostly. He saves that for me in a couple of containers. So, I'm going to leave that here for the bears.

[00:08:54]So, as you can see, the uh the beard is gone now. And the reason for that is because the first part of this video where I was building the stands was last year. I wanted to give you some idea of the work that goes into preparing for a bear hunt. And after I built that stand last year, I just didn't actually hunt very much. I didn't have the real motivation to do it. I did have a bear up on the popcorn stand. Uh he was there most of the summer, actually. I saw him once and I just chose not to shoot him.

[00:09:22]picking a friend up today. First time bear hunting. So, we're going to see how that goes. And as well, it's going to be a rifle hunt. So, we're going to my other stand that's in area 28.

[00:09:36]We're going to give that a go tonight.

[00:09:37]We've had a good bear that's been there the last two or three nights. He showed up pretty quick after we made it. So, we're going to get geared up here now and we're going to walk up the hill and see if Mr. Bear shows up and hopefully Mel will get a chance at her first bear here tonight. [00:10:01]>> Hey, well, I made some little bit of a cooking. So, rice krispies made with a bit of fat, animal fat. Uh, it's Christmas Rice Krispies makes it better.

[00:10:12]>> What else did you do in the bag? What else have you got in the bag? Uh, >> well, it's the >> Oh, she got it hung there. I'll hang that. We'll hang that higher. So, she made a candy jar >> candies. So, there's candy on top all over the place topped with popcorns and Timbits. This one is just regular candy.

[00:10:32]>> So, we're going to finish baiting. It's 11:00 in the morning. We got a couple things to do. We're going to be in the stand by about 3:30 hopefully. That's our plan.

[00:10:46]We're heading up to the stand. There's a little bit of wind. It's 23°. We're going to go up. It should be a nice hit breeze. Cover a little bit of the noise.

[00:15:18]This was a This was a very short recovery. He went maybe 30 40 yards from the stand. Uh shot him a little far back, but it's not bad. It's the way he was angled on the barrel. This is actually the exit wound here, but uh certainly got the lungs, both lungs there. He never went far. And this is a good bear. He's going to be a 19in skull there for sure.

[00:15:45]Pay our last respects to them. These are beautiful creatures. And for those of you who are complaining about trophy hunting, uh none of this bear will be wasted. There's going to be rugs made mince meat jerk flies.

[00:15:58]>> Flies. Salmon flies. I didn't have any bear hair for my special secret long harbor salmon fly. Yeah, we got to get him down in the open now and get the guts out of them.

[00:16:08]>> Let's do it.

[00:16:10]>> You got some teaching to do and I'm all open to learning.

[00:16:17]>> We got a line right ahead of us.

[00:16:19]>> Well, folks, that turned out to be quite an evening. This guy came in at about uh 8:50 last night. Was perfect. Uh got a great shot on camera. Uh we didn't let him stay at the bait for very long.

[00:16:31]Sometimes they'll just come in, grab some food, and run. So, we took the shot pretty quick. So, there wasn't much footage of them there playing, but it was fantastic. We recovered them in the dark and it was about 1:00 last night when we got straightened away and back to camping. So, we're going to get him home now and skinned out before the sun comes up today and it gets too hot.
