Petroglyphs are ancient rock carvings created by indigenous peoples that serve as visual storytelling devices, documenting historical events, migrations, and cultural narratives; the Perin Gap petroglyphs in Utah, dating back approximately 12,000 years, depict the migration of peoples from the Old World to the New World, including challenges like famine, drought, and conflict, with artistic conventions such as depicting a killed leader upside down to indicate death.

Stuck Waiting… So We Explored THISAdded:
So, we got two spots to go to today, right? And so, I got one and a half.
We're going to do the petetroglyphs because it's like basically on the side of the road. The next one is the dinosaur tracks >> which are just up >> the other way.
>> The other way to the east, but there's one spot that we've Well, we met some people. They said there were some dinosaur poop fossilized up on the hill, but it's a fairly steep hike, so I'm not going to tackle that one. No, but he wants me to >> for obvious reasons.
>> But I'm gonna >> But he's going to beg and plead and be like, "Hey honey, go take a picture of this fossilized dinosaur."
>> Well, why not? You're wearing your magic shoes. They can take you anywhere.
>> Only because you asked me to.
>> Mhm.
>> I can take you where you want to go.
I can take you where you want to go.
Let's go. I got my hands full.
>> Do you got everything?
>> Yes.
>> And I'm loaded here.
>> Okie dokie.
>> I may need help with the door.
>> Yep. I got the door.
>> Looks like I might need help with the door.
I got this one. I got so much stuff.
>> Why do we have so much stuff?
>> We're going for a walk finally.
>> Except for getting in the truck.
>> Yeah, except for So, where we're going is just like right over there. Can you believe that we can boondock this close to a pretty cool attraction?
>> Mhm.
>> Yeah. Me neither. This is like day five since we've been here and I have not been able to do anything. I don't know if it's the altitude or what's the big drive day, but I was pretty wiped.
>> But today, today got my magic shoes on.
>> Mama said they'd take me anywhere >> today. They're going to take me to petetroglyphs.
>> So, do you want to tell our friends where sort of exactly where we are? No, cuz you didn't tell me where we were.
>> We're in Paramo. Paramore.
>> Parowan.
>> Yeah, that's where we're at.
>> Parowan. Last year on our way north, we actually stopped just on the other side of I-15 at a really nice BLM spot. We loved it there and we were going to go back this year, but we decided to do something different. And we thought that if this wasn't a good spot, then we would go back to our our backup because we really liked it there.
>> Yeah. But yeah, we're literally like 3 or 100 m from the petetroglyphs.
>> Before we get there, let's catch you up.
After our last stop, we needed to head a little further north, trying to find that balance between cooler weather and staying within a few hours of Vegas while we waited on a call about the RV.
And this is where things really started to shift for our big lemon. We were in a bit of a holding pattern, not knowing what was coming next. And at the same time, we're starting to run out of time before we needed to be back in Canada.
So, while we waited, we figured we'd get out and explore this boondocking spot a little and see what we could find out here. So, these are called the Perin Gap petetroglyphs. Literally in a gap in the mountain. You'll see.
>> Rough spot.
>> Rough spot. That's okay. We got a new camera, the gimbal. You won't even notice.
>> Mhm.
>> Uhhuh. This spot is pretty cool for boondocking. We see a lot of uh ATVs.
So, we're also excited to potentially get out for a ride this week.
>> Oh, look. We're here.
>> Oh, look. We're here.
>> That's how close we are.
>> Yeah.
>> Peran Gap petetroglyphs.
>> Mhm.
We're walking and talking.
And we're not going to show you any petetroglyphs yet.
>> Well, cuz there's none here yet.
>> No, not yet. We have to go do the reading first. Don't you think >> you have to read? I got to look at the pictures.
>> Really? Okay. I think you missed that rock.
>> There's no pictures on that one. That one's for you.
>> Petetroglyphs on both sides of the road.
>> Yeah.
>> So, we're actually here >> 12,000 years ago.
>> People have lived on this landscape for 12,000 years. Yeah.
That's the ravens. They're like singing to Echo.
So cool. Anyway, so by about 500 AD, people were living in the Peruin Valley. Uh archaeology demonstrates people living in pit houses, villages, growing of corn and other staples, and making pottery. Some geology. Ooh, you like geology. This is called the red hills, ending in the narrows before you. These are narrows.
Ancient river once flowed across this land. The bedrock layers uplifted the river cut down through them just like a knife cutting through the cake that's pushed up from below. Peran gap is all that remains of that long ago. What have you learned so far about, you know, petetroglyphs in history here?
>> I don't know. I wasn't listening. I was looking at the pictures >> and listening to the crows cuz >> they were making weird noises cuz it was echoing in the valley. I think yeah, there's like holes or something in the rock and they're going in there and you know how crows and ravens like to do weird things.
>> They're making sounds so that they could hear their echoes.
>> Oh, look. They're already here.
>> Yeah.
>> People went up there and vandalized it with their own stuff.
>> Their own initials. Yeah. That's sad.
>> Yeah. But the original stuff is really cool. Like And there's a lot of it.
>> Yeah. Did you read this? Of course you didn't.
>> I don't know. Is there a picture? Well, there is pictures, but it tells it says it tells the story of migration from old world to new and it pic it depicts a long trail on which many experienced famine, drought, water crossings, cold ice, sun and hot ice and hot sun. So, this panel apparently talks of a great leader. When the people arrived in this new land, conflict arose and the leader was killed and the aro arrow inside his head which touches the top of his head indicates he knew he would die. The full petetroglyph depicts the leader. He is shown only as a head and body, no arms, and upside down to indicate he died.
>> So this is the >> That's it right there.
>> That's the whole petetroglyph.
Oh, that one. Yeah. So that's the journey.
But look, you can see right up close like there's looks like animals.
I think we heard a good quote. I don't know exactly where we heard it said, "Do things or visit places that make you feel small."
>> Yeah. Well, this makes us feel pretty small. I mean, to have this stuff on here from thousands of years ago.
>> Yeah. It's pretty neat.
>> It's pretty humbling. And it's it's littered all across the rocks. Like, you can find little spots of it everywhere and big concentrations of it.
>> Mhm. And here he is.
>> And if you look like a second or third time, like you notice more.
It just amazes me how I don't know if they climbed up there.
>> Well, I mean, they're probably pretty fit people, so a little bit of rock climbing is nothing to them, >> unlike us.
>> If you're comparing it to us, no bueno.
>> No bueno.
>> Yeah, it's everywhere, guys. All over the place. there.
>> Oh, I see. It looks like a tree.
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, okay.
>> It is a tree.
>> It is a tree.
>> I wonder if it's a cedar tree.
>> And up there.
>> Yep.
>> So, what walk in wilderness wouldn't be complete without Jason hearing and identifying a new bird?
>> Yeah. What did you get?
>> Got a canyon rent.
>> Mhm.
>> New lifer.
>> New lifer.
>> I got I got to see him before I log it.
>> Uh-huh.
>> And on the my binos are in the truck.
>> Oh, look. There's a squirrel.
>> I bet you that's what one of those animals were on the drawings. You definitely got to check this out. It is pretty awesome.
>> Mhm. There is so much of it over the rocks >> and it just Yeah, it's kind of all inspiring here and it tells a story. I mean, it's no Stephen King novel, but I bet you it's more interesting.
Like, wow. It's This is really I don't know what the word is. Vibrant out there.
clear.
>> This is mind-blowing.
>> Let's read the story on this one. Since when have you ever picked up a Stephen King novel?
>> I haven't, but I saw his name a lot. I watched some of the movies.
>> Did you?
>> Yeah.
It >> Uh-huh.
>> I think you did the mist or something or I don't know.
>> Here's something. Golden eagles apparently regularly nest in the cliffs around us. Many other birds of prey, including peragan falcons, prairie falcons, redtailed hawks, and great horn owls, live here as well.
>> Oh, so far I saw a squirrel. It's not just an add moment. I actually saw a squirrel.
>> These petetroglyphs are supposed to depict wildlife.
>> Probably the eagle.
>> I'm just fascinated by the geology.
These rocks are huge and they just make you feel so tiny in this world.
>> This is pretty awesome.
>> Let's go see the other side of the road.
>> Yep.
>> Yep. So, before we get into more of the cool stuff out here, quick update on the Big Lemon situation. We'd actually been going back and forth with a shop since 6 Mile Cove, and it finally felt like we might be getting somewhere. They seemed willing to take the project on, which was huge. But before anything could move forward, they needed to actually see the RV in person, and they were even willing to work with Grand Design on our behalf to try and get it covered under warranty.
>> We're at the dinosaur tracks, and there's not really much for parking.
You just have to pull off to the side.
And I don't know how long the trail is, but we're going to find out.
>> So, how far do we have to go to see dinosaur tracks?
>> I don't know.
Hopefully not far.
Hopefully it's not too much of a climb cuz I would really like to see it.
>> Okay.
>> Oh, there's a dinosaur track.
>> Yeah, >> but I'm guessing we got to go that way.
>> Okay. Well, look. What's that?
>> Oh, that is a dinosaur track.
>> That's the one that was vandalized.
>> Yep. So the sign said that in 2010 this whole thing was >> broken off.
>> Broken off. Well, in 20 whatever a year later. But these are There's a dinosaur track.
>> Huh.
>> Isn't that strange? Just on the side of a rock.
>> Yeah.
I mean, obviously it was probably up somewhere and rolled down.
>> I assume so. I don't know.
>> So, I think you have to look for the little dinosaur print.
Oh, there's one over here.
>> It's almost like a scavenger hunt a >> little bit. Oh, look. Those are like big ones.
I don't know. I'm not sure I'm seeing it unless it's >> unless it's this big one, but I don't know.
Let's go around the other side. See if there's something more obvious.
>> Nope.
>> Nope.
Nope.
Trying to look for those little signs.
>> Oh, there's one up here.
>> Oh, okay.
Look at how cool these rocks are.
What do we have here?
I don't know if if this was something. I can't really tell.
>> One, two, >> I don't know.
>> Like three toes.
>> Yeah, that's a good question.
>> Well, you wanted to see dinosaur stuff.
>> Well, I did already. And like look how the weather has eroded the sandstone.
That is pretty cool.
Huh?
>> No. No. Right here.
>> Oh, yeah.
There you are.
>> I see you.
>> Yeah, that's pretty cool.
>> This is the end of the line.
>> Okay, so today we're definitely not slow, but we do like rocks.
>> I love rocks.
I love how the weather forms them and erodess them and how they can stick some dinosaur fossil tracks in them.
>> Yeah. Apparently he likes rocks.
>> Yep. All across the whole top.
>> Oh, >> it's all like that.
>> And then the white ones come from >> from that layer. Yeah, there's a couple layers there.
>> Lessons from Jay.
>> Yeah. Each layer is a story book in time.
>> God, that sounded intelligent.
He's checking for birds now.
>> Yeah.
>> This is where he tells me to be quiet.
>> That's a bird of prey.
>> Yeah, there it is.
I've seen the shadow. It's a paragan falcon.
>> Does it identify as that?
>> Yeah.
>> Nice.
So, while we were checking out these tracks, we ran into some people who told us there was petrified dinosaur poop just up the hill. And since Jay doesn't exactly do hiking, he volunteered me to go and see if I could find it.
Okay, here I go.
The goal today for Jason to be able for me to record Jason's request of some rumored dinosaur poop. Petrified.
>> It's there. We were told it's there.
>> We were told it's there.
>> Yeah.
>> The goal some rock some up there. I don't know. Maybe up there. Tree rock.
>> Okay. Get going. I believe in you.
>> You believe in?
>> Where's the insurance papers at?
>> In your email. Okay.
>> Wait, which insurance?
>> Life insurance.
>> Uh, okay. Already this is steeper than I thought. And the ground is littered with pricky things. Okay. Looks like I'm just going to have to go. While Katie is on her way up to supposed dino poop, I'm going to get the drone ready and see if I can get some good shots.
Okay, guys. I should be halfwayish. But just wanted to show you this cuz it looks like a big pile of bleep just in case I don't make it to where it's supposed to be. If that is the pile, you know, it's kind of cool. I guess it's probably just a piece of rock.
Anyway, I found like a goat path kind of thing or a path that the deer or the goats use so that I can wind my way up to that big there rock. I have no idea how I'm going to get down. I guess I'm going to put the camera down and keep going.
I made it to the rock. And what you can't see from down there is that this rock is literally split and you can actually walk in there. I'm a little concerned about, you know, snakes and animals and scorpions and stuff, but this is kind of cool. Huge, huge piece of rock. Anyway, I don't know where this ball of whatever is supposed to be. I'm wondering if it's that. Help me out here. Oh, and there's spiderw webs everywhere. Yeah, that looks like it could be a pile of crap. What do you think? See if we can get a different view. Yeah. No. Well, guess the least we could do is try and get up there. Give Jason a picture.
Oh boy.
See my husband down there. He's talking to the camera.
Feel like that bird's mocking me a little bit. It's probably a mocking bird. Anyway, there's the view. I made it.
>> Well, I see her up there. That's a long ways up there. Kudos to you, babe, for making it all that way up. I would never would have been able to.
I'm really hoping she finds the dinosaur fossilized poopy cuz that's a long walk up there for nothing if she doesn't find it.
And I really want to see it, but I know I can't get up that high.
So, I'm going to check her out. See if I can see what she's up to on the binoculars.
>> Okay, folks. This does not look like a pile of dinosaur crap. Just saying. It looks like rock.
>> You're on the wrong rock.
>> Yeah, I'm not getting up on that one.
>> You don't get up on it. It's in between those two rocks.
this rock.
>> Yep.
>> He's looking through binoculars.
When you come off that rock, >> come towards the next one that's pillared and walk walk around the shady side.
You'll see there's a different color rock in between those two rocks.
He's giving me instructions to figure out here. We got to go uh to that other rock. Give me a minute.
Is that the dinosaur poop? Huh? Maybe.
Yeah. This is why Katie doesn't climb.
Totally. Why? Well, there's the back of the rock.
I've had enough. Oh, there's like a pillar. Okay, I see what Jay's doing.
That's amazing. She's way up there and I can almost hear her plain as day.
That's pretty cool.
I don't know, guys.
I mean, could be, but and I'm a little envious that she can make her way up there with little effort.
>> My lungs are burning. My legs are going to hurt.
>> And those are the things that I want to see, but I can't.
>> So, not finding any dinosaur poop. Not that I would know what it looks like if it was petrified. I think it's time for me to go down cuz this is going to take a while. I'm going to see you on the bottom.
>> Guess she's not going to find it. Oh well, not a big deal. I might be able to make it up there, but I just spent 4 days basically on my back resting from one travel day.
So, I don't want to take that chance. We do have some friends coming to hang out for a few days. So, we'll probably want to get out in the side by side and stuff.
If I were to do that today, not saying that I would make it, I probably wouldn't, but then I would be hooped for probably the rest of the week. And that's not something I'm willing to do.
We saw lots today, and I'm pretty happy with that.
That was a long way up there.
Oh, hold on.
And literally no >> I don't know where they were looking.
>> No kidding. I don't know.
>> But they said it was smushed in between the rocks. So I figured it was that dark layer in between. Did you see the dark layer in between those big rocks?
>> Yeah. It's all moss and >> Oh, is it?
>> Yeah. It's not dinosaur poop. Well, >> what you would think, but I got some cool shots of what we we could put it out there to our friends on the channel to see if anybody's a geology major.
>> Yeah. Okay. Hop in the truck.
Take a break. You deserved it.
>> Don't ever ask me to do that kind of thing.
>> Oh, you did awesome.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> That's a long way up there.
>> Yeah, my lungs are burning.
>> But hey, on a positive note, it only took you like three and a half minutes to get down from there.
Let's go get some food.
>> Where are we going to go?
>> I can't remember the place.
>> It's called High Voltage Barbecue. It's in Peruin. It shouldn't be too far away if we can find a way to cross the interstate. And >> oh, we'll Dukes Hazard that.
>> If only I had the horn, you would see one ton dy going across the highway.
Listen, I know how much you want a train horn. It will come. I promise it will come. And I have not said you can't get a train horn.
>> Mhm.
>> So, yeah, we're going to go to High Voltage Barbecue because somebody is craving some smoked mac and cheese.
>> Yeah, their mac and cheese is the best I've ever had. And I'm buying like a bucket of it. Maybe just like a one liter bucket, but it's still a bucket.
It is so good >> and so bad for you.
>> Let's go get some food for you. Watching you come down that hill is hungry business.
>> Mhm. Yeah. I'm not sure if I want pasta right now though. Just just saying.
>> Well, you got carbo.
>> What? For the next hike you're going to put me on.
>> Yeah, you're cursing, babe.
>> It's I'll bleep it out.
>> After all that, it was definitely time to go get Jay his bucket of smoked mac and cheese. But before we call it a day here, we still have the other side of the road and the rest of the petetroglyphs to check out.
>> Did you lose him?
>> No. There he is.
>> Okay.
>> And he is zipping up those rocks. So, here's what I'm thinking. Thousands of years ago when the natives were here, they saw that little bugger. Well, his ancestor. And they look at him zip on them rocks. Bet you we can do that, too.
And when we do, we're going to draw some pictures up there, too. Tell the story of that little Look at him coming.
>> Okay. You have to Oh, here.
>> Does he think we have food?
>> He's coming to say hi.
What did Chipmunk sound like?
>> Obviously, I said something wrong cuz I offended him.
>> Apparently, he did.
>> Okay, we're on the other side. What do you see?
>> Well, I see more rocks. I don't see any significant drawings.
And they would be probably gated off anyway if there was some here.
No, look it up here.
>> Where?
>> Up.
>> Oh, I do see some.
>> Let's get up close and personal with these petetroglyphs. Look, there's like a clear sun.
Like these natives were mountaineers.
You can even feel them.
So that looks like it concludes our petetroglyphs tour. Yeah, guys, if you're down this way, stop in. This is this is really cool.
>> Yeah. And uh so even if you're if you're like towing an RV, even if you don't fit into the parking lot here, there's actually boondocking like >> like just feet >> right down the road >> inside the parking area.
>> You could probably stop and walk and just experience this cuz it's kind of cool. Definitely worth a stop. Yeah, >> after everything we've been through, it felt really good to be back out boondocking. And this spot definitely had a lot to share with us. But over the course of that first week here, the Big Lemon situation was still our main focus. We were running out of time before we needed to head back to Canada and running out of options on how to get this thing fixed and who would help us do it. But we finally started to make some progress with a repair shop. So, keep rolling with us because we've got more updates coming. And if you enjoy our kind of ride, be sure to like, comment, and subscribe. We're Jason and Katie, and we're out here just rolling with it.
>> That you have to hit record.
>> Yeah.
>> Now you're recording. See that red thing up there?
>> Where?
>> Top left.
>> My eyes are bad. And the sun is shining.
>> The size of this.
>> It sounded National Geographic.
>> Yeah.
>> Do your voice.
Which voice?
>> Oh, doesn't matter.
Do a deep one like you're narrating.
Each layer is a story book in time.
>> That was pretty good, actually. I think you nailed it.
>> Apparently, there are no words.
It's all about the mac and cheese.
Holy crap. We're not allowed to hide.
Not allowed to hike anymore.
>> It does something to me.
>> Yeah.
That's it. No more.
>> We're in shape.
>> You have to go this way.
>> Yeah. Round is a shape.
>> Round is a shape. Yeah.
Was it the same?
>> I don't know what they do. It's the best mac and cheese I've ever had. So good.
If you don't stop at High Voltage Barbecue when you're coming through here, you're missing out. Honest to God.
>> Didn't you say yesterday chivalry wasn't dead?
>> Oh, chivalry is not dead. It's just got a bad memory.
After you my dear.
