ISRO's Dust Experiment (DEX), developed by the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad and launched aboard the PSLV C58 mission using the POEM (PSLV Orbital Experimental Module) platform, is India's first indigenous instrument to detect and study interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) from comets and asteroids, which are detected approximately every 1,000 seconds and can damage satellites at high speeds, making this research crucial for understanding the space environment and ensuring the safety of future space missions to the Moon, Mars, Venus, and deeper space.

ISRO’s Dust Experiment (DEX) : Science and Tech : UPSC 2026Added:
ISRO's Dust Experiment or DEX has detected interplanetary dust particles near Earth.
It detected these particles roughly every 1,000 seconds.
This is important because space is not completely empty.
It contains tiny dust particles.
These particles mainly come from comets and asteroids.
Scientists call them interplanetary dust particles or IDPs.
They are microscopic fragments.
When some of them enter Earth's atmosphere and burn, we see them as shooting stars.
Now, understand DEX simply. It is India's first homemade instrument to detect and study high-speed dust particles in space.
The Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad developed it. ISRO flew it on POEM during the PSLV C58 mission.
POEM means PSLV Orbital Experimental Module.
It uses the final stage of the PSLV rocket as a platform for experiments in orbit.
DEX studies tiny high-speed impacts in space.
This matters for satellites.
Even a very small particle can hit a satellite at high speed.
It can damage sensitive parts.
So, studying space dust helps scientists understand the space environment better.
It also helps in planning safer future missions.
These missions may go to the Moon, Mars, Venus, or deeper space.
So, remember this for UPSC.
DEX is India's first indigenous cosmic dust detector.
It studies interplanetary dust particles from comets and asteroids.
It shows India's growing strength in space science, satellite safety, and planetary exploration. Subscribe to our channel Clarity UPSC and download our app for all science and tech current affairs 2026.
