Strong winds in the Columbia Basin and Gorge are caused by a temperature differential between cooler western and warmer eastern air, combined with a pressure pattern that allows winds to intensify; this creates mountain wave clouds in the lee of the mountains when a weak weather disturbance crosses through the region.

KGW Forecast: 11 p.m., Wednesday, May 6, 2026Added:
Yeah, all right. Let's take you outside right now. There's a look at The Dalles Dam from our sky cam on the Oregon Veterans Home. It has been a very windy affair out in the central and eastern Gorge and the Columbia Basin. The winds have backed off. They're still gusting to 28 mph, which will definitely get your attention. So, it's still windy, but the wind advisory has been allowed to expire. But, look at the wind gusts that we had. There's a weather station on the east side of the Hood River Valley recorded a gust of 64. That is a notoriously windy spot. It always tends to be windier than every everywhere else. So, keep that in mind. The Dalles also had a gust of 45, Heppner 42, Pendleton 39, and Boardman 38 mph. So, it was ripping out in the Columbia Basin and in the Gorge. And, here's the reason why. Cooler on the west side, relatively warm air on the east side, and the pressure pattern was such that it just allowed the winds to really rip. We had a weak disturbance crossing through Washington and BC, and that's what created these mountain wave clouds that you see forming here in the lee of the mountains. And, so it was just the perfect setup for some strong winds in the Columbia Basin. But, now the pattern's changing a bit, and I don't think that marine layer is going to last nearly as long tomorrow. Didn't burn off till early afternoon today or start breaking up tomorrow morning. Should begin to burn off and break up between about 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. So, a much earlier burn off. We had 67 today, Salem was 71, Portland should be back in the 70s tomorrow. Medford was 84 for the hot spot in the state. We had 81 in Prineville, 81 in La Grande, and 82 in Bend. So, tomorrow clouds early, but then by late morning, I think it's going to become mostly sunny. We'll end up at 73. Tomorrow sunrise at 5:49, sunset now approaching 8:30. It's 8:25 tomorrow.
Okay, so here's the deal. There goes that weather system moving on out of here. High pressure building in, so we have more of a northerly flow. This is the weather system that had been threatening us with showers for Friday.
Now, it looks very unlikely that we get any rain in it, and I'll show you this right now as a matter of fact. Tomorrow morning, clouds that are already broken up at 7:00 should clear out completely.
Even the coast should get some clearing tomorrow. Then, as we go into Friday, we get more clouds. There is a stripe of clearing early in the morning. Notice the rain offshore. It's looking weaker and weaker with every iteration of the models. And as we go through time, it doesn't even make it inland. We'll get some clearing on Friday afternoon, but really it'll be Saturday afternoon when the clouds clear and stay basically away for several days to come as high pressure rolls back on in and after that weak system on Friday. So, we will keep things good for Mother's Day weekend.
Jets will southwesterly flow. If you're rooting for rain, it may be the end of next week when we start getting a cooler and wet weather pattern returning to the Northwest. We'll see if it plays out that way. It is in Portland right now, cloudy and 55. Freezing level is up at 12,500 ft. So, like I said, even the coast gets some clearing tomorrow.
Morning, fog and clouds, and then mostly sunny and up to about 60 there. The valleys are still going to make the low 70s with the sunshine breaking out.
Again, it should be sometime between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 or 11:00 a.m. that we get the clearing. Sunny up at the Cascades all day. 62 at Government Camp, 51 at Timberline. South load Eastern Oregon, breezy, but not as windy. Gusts only about 25. In the gorge, again, breezy and windy for a while up to 30 mph for the Eastern Gorge. And in Portland, we've got morning clouds and then sunshine and 73 tomorrow, and we are dropping back into the 60s on Friday because of the increased cloud cover.
But 79 on Saturday and 81 on Mother's Day and staying in the low 80s for good 3-4 days in a row there, David. A whole lot of sunshine. Thanks, Matt.
>> You bet.
