[00:00:13]On Monday afternoon local time, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Sanriku in Aomori Prefecture, Japan with a focal depth of 19 km. The Meteorological Agency issued tsunami warnings for the central Pacific coast of Hokkaido, the Pacific coast of Aomori Prefecture, and Iwate Prefecture. The earthquake was so powerful that even in Tokyo, several hundred kilometers away, people felt the shaking for more than a minute. After the earthquake, the Japan Meteorological Agency warned that the risk of aftershocks remains high and the probability of another major earthquake occurring is considered above normal levels.
