Was Halloween Ends Secretly the Right Ending?

[00:00:00]What if Halloween understood Michael Myers better than we think? Was it secretly THE RIGHT ENDING?

[00:00:17]>> [music] >> HI GUYS, MY NAME IS BARRY AND welcome back to the channel. I feel myself come back to Halloween Ends yet again because it's one of the movies in the franchise that I not secretly, one of the movies in the franchise that I really like and I've let everybody know that it is one of my favorites in the franchise.

[00:00:34]And even though it's almost 4 years later, there's still this stigma over the movie where a lot of people just don't like it.

[00:00:44]>> Do you have a problem?

[00:00:45]>> Now, I'll hold my hands up and say that I agree with a lot of the issues that people have with Halloween Ends. For example, Michael Myers is barely in the movie. I agree with that because you can see that on screen, he's hardly ever in the movie. Another issue people have is with Corey Cunningham. Now, as much as people do appreciate Corey Cunningham, he was just kind of dropped into the last chapter of this trilogy. That's an issue for a lot of people. It's something I don't mind, but if someone tells you that's the reason that they don't like it, I completely understand that because it is a character that feels forced right to the very end of this trilogy and it doesn't quite fit in.

[00:01:26]We're going to have a good time tonight.

[00:01:28]>> The marketing promised Laurie versus Michael Myers and it's another thing that we didn't really get. Yes, we got the last between 5 and 10 minutes of the movie with Laurie versus Michael, but it was nothing like what we got in Halloween H2O in 1998. I know that a lot of people have issues with H2O, but the people that didn't like Ends will probably say they prefer H2O over Halloween Ends because H2O promised, sorry, it's too delivered on what they promised, whereas Halloween Ends didn't.

[00:02:05]>> [screaming] >> The movie of course feels like a strange detour. Halloween 2018 took us back to the roots of the original. Halloween Kills, as much as that had its issues, but Halloween Kills had a lot of blood, guts, and gore in it that a lot of Halloween fans tend to love now because they love Michael Myers. But because we got less of Michael Myers, they took it that detour into the realms of Season of the Witch, and people who didn't like Season of the Witch tend not to like Halloween Ends. The film does spend two movies building up something that doesn't quite get there in the third movie. Of course, we can blame COVID a little bit because they had to change a few things, but they still had time to rewrite certain things to make it fit better with the first two movies in the David Gordon Green trilogy. But again, because they went on that detour, it just doesn't quite fit the finale of this trilogy.

[00:03:02]So, that is most of the issues that people have with the movie. I'm assuming there's probably more issues that people have, but I think that's the general gist of the main issues that people have with Halloween Ends. But for for me, honestly, those issues that people have, which again, completely valid, I don't mind any of those. I think something that I like about it is it doesn't treat Michael Myers as this slasher they did in the previous 12 movies or so, or 11 movies minus Season of the Witch. It treated him like this disease, this folklore, this evil entity where it's not just zoned in on Michael Myers.

[00:03:42]It's Haddonfield as a whole, and this evil can take hold of anyone. Not supernatural, not spiritual, nothing like that. It's almost like the town is making itself do things and pass on the evil to somebody else. So, if Michael Myers isn't there to be Michael Myers, then someone else will just take his place. I.E. Corey Cunningham. Corey Cunningham isn't just this random guy stealing Michael Myers mask, even though he does. He's not just this random guy that comes along and wants to be Michael Myers. He experienced his trauma as well at the beginning of the movie and people start pointing and blaming him, pointing their fingers at him saying, "You're the next Michael Myers." The town are all turning on this guy for something that he didn't quite do himself. He wasn't at fault for what happened, but the town is quick to choose the next boogeyman. Like Corey Cunningham's mother said, >> But because your boogeyman disappeared, they needed a new one.

[00:04:39]>> So, they're choosing him as the next boogeyman and he's like, "Do you what?

[00:04:43]I'll be the next boogeyman if you really want me to." Haddonfield's become this place of fear, trauma, blame, guilt, all these things put together where they're just not going to be happy even when some of them feel like they're trying to move on from Michael Myers, they just can't do it. Laurie can't do it. Our granddaughter can't do it and neither can Corey Cunningham. Corey's purpose in Halloween Ends isn't to replace Michael Myers. He's not the new shape. He's what represents Michael Myers. Michael Myers is pure evil and Corey is what happens if the town turns against somebody else.

[00:05:18]Corey faces the pain, the humiliation, the anger, the rejection and he shows how that shape can spread throughout Haddonfield. For me, I think the idea of Corey Cunningham is fantastic and I do like how they implemented him into the story. I think, like I said at the beginning of this video, is the placement is the problem. Putting Corey Cunningham into this situation at this point in time was the wrong decision to make and I've said this time and time again that if they didn't kill off Cameron in Halloween Kills, they could have used his character and his trauma of what happened in the first movie and in Kills, bringing that over to Halloween Ends. And if you gave if you gave him the identical situation that Corey Cunningham was in, then I think people would have liked it better because they built up the character and even if it was a new idea, it would look more natural because this character was there from the start or at least in the 2018 movie. If they didn't do that but introduce Corey Cunningham in at least Halloween Kills, then maybe it would have felt a little bit better. But I do agree with a lot of people putting them into the last movie and get it giving them the build up from Halloween Ends to the end of this movie was a little bit too short notice. However, like I said, the time that he got in Halloween Ends from the beginning to the end felt like it lasted a few movies because his character was built up pretty fast and I was invested from the beginning.

[00:06:50]If we look at Laurie's ending, I feel like her ending fit the narrative and it felt thematically correct. Laurie Strode didn't die at the end of the movie. If I liked Laurie Strode better, it would have been cool. And I don't mind that she survived at the end of the movie. A lot of people didn't want her to survive survive and I didn't want her to survive either but because she did survive, the way she survived, I didn't mind it because I knew that this was the end.

[00:07:17]Michael Myers died at the end of the movie. So I was okay with Laurie surviving. Had Michael not died or had they left it open for interpretation, I would have preferred her to die because if she didn't die and we didn't know that Michael died or not, then leaving that ambiguous at the end of the movie would be pointless. It would have been a pointless trilogy in that case. But because Michael definitely died, I didn't mind that she survived. Halloween Ends did feel as a crowd-pleasing finale, but thematically, I feel like this was the best ending FOR THIS TRILOGY.

[00:07:52]>> [screaming] [groaning] >> IT TRIED TO DO SOMETHING more interesting than the previous Halloween movies. And if you look back on the David Gordon Green trilogy, we got the 2018 movie that was a standalone at the time movie that felt like the original movie. People wanted more kills, so they gave us Halloween Kills. Some people wanted something with more nuance, something like Season of the Witch, and that's what we got with Halloween Ends.

[00:08:19]So, with the three movies, I felt like it David Gordon Green gave us gave us something, and he gave something for everyone who's a fan of not only Michael Myers, but a fan of the Halloween franchise.
