You see, when I was working on the Manhattan project, surrounded by the most brilliant minds of my generation, someone asked a question at lunch one afternoon that stopped the whole table cold. It wasn't about the the bomb.
It wasn't about physics. The question was simple, almost embarrassingly simple. Where is everybody? That question, those three words were asked by Enrio Fermy.
And decades later, that question still does not have a clean answer.
And I think the reason it doesn't is more terrifying and more beautiful than most people are willing to sit with. When I was a young man in Far Rockaway, New York, as I I used to sit on the roof at night and look up, not with a telescope, just with my eyes. And even then, without any instruments, without any equations, I could feel it. The sheer weight of what was up there.
Now, most people look at the night sky and they see decoration, a pretty backdrop, something romantic.
But I want you to really look at it for a moment, the way a physicist looks at it. Every single point of light you see with your naked eye is a star. Not a dot, not an ornament, a star, an enormous, violent nuclear furnace. In many cases, far larger than our own sun.
And our own sun, let me remind you, so large that you could fit 1 million Earths inside it and still have room.
Now, here is where I want you to start paying close attention. Our galaxy, the Milky Way, contains somewhere between 200 billion and 400 billion of those stars. That number is so large that if I asked you to count to one billion, one number per second without sleeping, without stopping, it would take you over 31 years for 1 billion.
Our galaxy has 400 times that many stars. And our galaxy is just one galaxy, the observable universe.
meaning only the part of the universe that light has had time to reach us from.
Since the beginning of everything contains somewhere in the range of two trillion galaxies, two trillion, each one with hundreds of billions of stars.
Now, I want you to hold that in your head because here is the question that follows from it with iron logic. Are we seriously the only ones? When I was young, the idea of planets orbiting other stars was theoretical.
We suspected it, we argued about it, we built the mathematics around it, but we could not prove it.
In my lifetime that changed dramatically and today the evidence is overwhelming.
Planets are not rare. Planets are everywhere. They are, it turns out, the natural consequence of how stars form.
Dust and gas and gravity do their work and you get planets. The universe makes them almost automatically. And among those planets, we have now identified thousands in what astronomers call the habitable zone. That is the region around a star where liquid water can exist on a surface.
Not too hot, not too cold.
The conditions where on our own world, life did not merely survive. Life exploded. Life found a way into every crack, every depth, every extreme environment on this planet.
There is something I find deeply important about that. Life once it starts is remarkably stubborn. Have found life on Earth in boiling volcanic vents at the bottom of the ocean. We have frozen Antarctic lakes under kilometers of ice.
We have found microbes surviving in conditions that would destroy most of our technology.
Life does not give up easily.
So now put the two ideas together.
Planets are common.
Life once it gets a foothold is extraordinaryly tenacious. Jot, what does that suggest about a un universe with two trillion galaxies? It suggests that the question is not really whether life exists elsewhere.
The question, the far more interesting and far more disturbing question is what kind of life?
How long has it been out there? How much further along is it than us?
Because here is is what we often forget.
The universe is 14 billion years old.
Our civilization, the thing we call human history, the pyramids, the Roman Empire, the industrial revolution, all of it is roughly 10,000 years old. 10,000 years out of 14 billion. We are cosmically speaking newborns. We are an infant species that has just just started to make noise. And somewhere out there, something may have had a 14 billionyear head start. Now ask yourself honestly, what would that look like? So now we have a problem and it is not a small problem. It is not the kind of problem you solve over a weekend with a pencil and a notepad.
It is the kind of problem that the more carefully you look at it, the more unsettling it becomes.
Here is the situation. The universe is ancient. Planets are everywhere.
Life is stubborn and persistent. The mathematics of probability applied honestly and without wishful thinking suggests overwhelmingly that we should not be alone.
That intelligence somewhere should have had billions of years to develop, to grow, to spread, to communicate.
And yet silence, total absolute almost eerie silence. No signals, no visitors, no evidence of construction on a cosmic scale. Nothing. Now when I encounter a situation in physics where the math says one thing and the observation says another, I do not ignore it. I do not explain it away. I lean in because that gap, that contradiction between what the equations predict and what you actually find, that is exactly where the interesting physics is hiding.
And this gap is enormous.
Let me explain why the silence is so strange. I want to do it in a way that really lands. Imagine you have a forest, a vast forest, thousands of miles >> in every direction. The mathematics of biology tells you that this forest should be full of birds, hundreds of species, millions of individuals singing, moving, filling the air with sound.
You walk into that forest fully expecting to hear an extraordinary symphony of life and you hear nothing.
Not quiet, not a distant chirp, nothing. That is the situation we are in. That is what we call the fermy paradox.
And it is not a paradox because the math is wrong. The math is solid.
It is a paradox because the universe is not behaving the way it should if intelligence is common.
Now there are proposed explanations. I want to walk you through the serious ones because some of them are deeply troubling in ways that don't get talked about enough. The first explanation is distance.
Space is incomprehensibly large and maybe the signals are out there, but the distances involved are so vast that they simply haven't reached us yet.
Radio waves, the kind we've been broadcasting into space since the early 20th century, travel at the speed of light.
That sounds fast.
And it is fast. It is the fastest anything in this universe can move.
But the nearest star to our sun is so far away that light takes over four years just to get there. Four years to reach our nearest neighbor. The galaxy is 100,000 light years across. A signal sent from one side would take 100,000 years to reach the other. So maybe the universe is full of voices.
We are simply sitting in an enormous room and none of the messages have arrived yet.
That is the optimistic explanation. Here is a less comfortable one. Maybe civilizations do arise.
Maybe intelligence is common. But maybe there is something that happens to technological civilizations before they ever get a chance to reach out. Something that stops them, something we might call a filter, a point that civilizations reach and do not pass.
Now when I first encountered this idea seriously, it hit me in a way that very few ideas in my career ever did because the question it forces you to ask is brutal in its honesty. Is the filter behind us or is it ahead?
If the filter is behind us, if the hard part was getting from chemistry to life, from simple cells to complex organisms, from organisms to consciousness, then perhaps we have already survived the difficult passage.
Perhaps we are rare precisely because the road here was nearly impossible.
And ahead of us lies an open universe.
But if the filter is ahead of us, if civilizations routinely reach our level of technological development and then then our silence has a different meaning entirely. The universe stops feeling vast and wondrous. It starts feeling like a warning.
Now I want to slow down here. Cause the costs because we have arrived at the part of this conversation where most people make a mistake. They hear the word paradox and they think it means confusion. They think it means we don't know what we're talking about.
But in science, a paradox is not a sign of ignorance. A paradox is a gift. A paradox means reality is trying to tell you something that your current framework of understanding is not yet equipped to hear.
The paradox we are sitting inside right now is one of the most profound ones I have ever encountered. Here it is stated plainly. If intelligent life is likely to exist elsewhere in a universe this old and this large, then someone somewhere should have had enough time not just to evolve.
Not just to develop technology, but to spread, to physically move through the galaxy, to colonize, to build things on a scale we could see from here.
And here is the part that I find genuinely stunning. When you do the math, honestly, even at speeds that are nowhere near the speed of light, even traveling at a tiny fraction of what physics ultimately allows. A civilization with a modest head start could through patient and methodical expansion colonize every star system in the entire Milky Way galaxy in somewhere between 1 million and 10 million years.
That sounds like a long time. I understand that 10 million years feels incomprehensible to a human being whose life spans less than a century. But remember what I told you. The universe is 14 billion years old. 10 million years is less than onetenth of 1% of the age of the universe. It is nothing. It is a rounding error on the cosmic calendar.
And yet in that vanishingly small slice of cosmic time, a sufficiently motivated civilization could have touched every corner of this galaxy. So where are they?
This is the paradox in its sharpest form.
Not just that we haven't heard from anyone but that in a universe this old if expansion is possible someone should have already been here should have passed through this solar system should have left some mark some artifact some sign and we find nothing now I want to offer you three serious scientific possibilities I want you to sit with each one of them the way you would sit with a difficult piece of music.
Don't rush past it.
Let it land. The first possibility is that we are genuinely extraordinarily almost impossibly rare. That the chain of events required to produce not just life but intelligent technological communicating life is so specific, so improbable that in a galaxy of 400 billion stars, it may have only happened once.
here, us alone in an incomprehensible darkness.
The second possibility is that advanced civilizations exist, but they choose silence deliberately.
Perhaps they observe without interfering. Perhaps contact with a younger civilization is something they consider dangerous either to us or to themselves.
Perhaps the silence is not emptiness.
Perhaps it is a policy.
The third possibility is the one that I find the hardest to dismiss and the most difficult to think about calmly. Perhaps civilizations do not last.
Perhaps the very process of becoming technologically advanced carries within it the seeds of self-destruction. Perhaps every civilization that reaches the point where it can split the atom, where it can reshape its climate, where it can build weapons of total annihilation, faces a moment of decision, and perhaps most of them do not make the right choice. Perhaps the galaxy is quiet, not because it is empty, because it is littered with the ruins of civilizations that burn themselves out before they ever learned to look outward with wisdom rather than fear.
And if that is true, then the silence of the universe is not a mystery. It is a pattern and we are not standing at the beginning of that pattern.
We are somewhere in the middle of it making choices right now that will determine whether our voice ever joins the conversation or whether we too go quiet.
All right. This is the part I have been building toward.
Everything I have told you so far, the size of the universe, the age of the cosmos, the silence, the paradox, all of it has been preparation. Because now I want to ask you a question that I think has the potential to genuinely reorganize the way you understand reality.
And the question is this.
If an alien civilization exists that is 1 million years more advanced than us, what would they actually look like? Now, most people when they imagine an advanced alien civilization imagine something like us but better.
Faster ships, bigger computers, more sophisticated weapons.
They imagine a civilization that has solved the problems we are still working on.
They imagine something recognizable, something that sits across a table and communicates and trades and negotiates.
I want to take that image and I want to I want to dissolve it completely because here is what 1 million years of technological advancement actually implies.
And I want you to follow this logic step by step because every step is solid.
Consider where we were 1,000 years ago.
In the year 1000, the most sophisticated technology on earth was a watermill and a longbow. That is it. No electricity, no understanding of germ theory, no concept of atoms, no mathematics beyond basic arithmetic for most of the population.
A person from that era transported to a modern city would not merely be confused. They would have no framework whatsoever for understanding what they were seeing.
An airplane would not look like adequate transportation to them. It would look like a miracle or a monster.
They would have no category for it.
Now multiply that gap not by two, not by 10, by 1,000, by 1 million.
A civilization 1 million years ahead of us has had the same amount of time beyond our current level that we have had beyond the stone age multiplied 1,000 times over. And here is the thought that breaks the brain open. At some point along that trajectory, the distinction between technology and nature disappears.
Let me say that again because I mean it precisely.
There is a concept that physicists and futurists discuss seriously, not as science fiction, but as a logical consequence of physics, which describes civilizations by the total amount of energy they are able to harness and control. A civilization at our level uses roughly the energy output of our own planet. The next level would be a civilization that harnesses the total energy output of its star. Not some of it, all of it, the complete energy of an entire star captured and directed by engineering.
The level beyond that would be a civilization that harnesses the energy of an entire galaxy. Now, here is what stops me cold every time I think about it carefully.
If such a civilization built structures around a star to capture its energy completely and we looked at that star from Earth, what would we see? We would see a star that has gone dark or a star radiating only in the infrared in heat rather than light because all the useful energy is being captured before it can escape.
We might look at that with our telescopes and call it an unusual astronomical object.
We might write papers about it. We might propose exotic physical mechanisms to explain the dimming. We might never once think to ask whether something built it.
And this is the thought I cannot let go of. We have been searching for alien civilizations by looking for signals that look like what we would send.
radio waves, mathematical patterns, deliberate broadcasts. But what if the signature of a truly advanced civilization does not look like a message?
What if it looks like physics? What if some of the phenomena we observe in the universe, phenomena we currently attribute to natural processes are in fact the exhaust, the byproduct, the background noise of engineering on a scale we do not yet have the imagination to recognize.
What if we have already seen the evidence simply filed it away under the wrong category?
That question does not let me sleep easily.
And it shouldn't let you sleep easily either. I have spent my entire life in love with the truth. Not comfortable truth, not reassuring truth.
The actual truth, the kind that sit sits in your chest like a stone and refuses to be dissolved by wishful thinking.
The kind that demands you look at it directly without flinching, without softening the edges.
And the hard truth about first contact, about what actually happens, the moment humanity encounters another intelligence from somewhere else in the cosmos is something that almost nobody wants to say out loud in polite company. So let me say it. We are not prepared.
Not technologically, not politically, not philosophically, not psychologically.
We are a species that still in the early 21st century cannot agree on basic facts about our own world. We are a species that has had thousands of years to develop wisdom and has repeatedly chosen power. Instead, we are a species that when confronted with something genuinely unfamiliar, has a deeply rooted and historically documented tendency to either worship it or destroy it. Neither of those responses is going to serve us well.
Now, I want to be precise here because I am not being pessimistic.
I am being a physicist. A physicist looks at the evidence that is actually available, not the evidence he wishes were available. Look at every single instance in recorded human history where a technologically advanced civilization encountered a less advanced one. every single instance the pattern is consistent enough to be considered almost a law of contact. The more advanced civilization does not arrive as an equal. It arrives as something that reorganizes the entire reality of the civilization it encounters.
Languages disappear.
Belief systems collapse.
Social structures that held communities together for thousands of years dissolve within a generation or two. Here is the crucial point I need you to sit with.
In every one of those historical encounters, both civilizations were human.
Same biology, same fundamental emotional architecture, same basic needs and fears and drives.
The gap between them was measured in centuries of technological difference, maybe 500 years, maybe a thousand.
Now imagine a gap not of centuries but of millions of years. Imagine.
Imagine an encounter not between two human cultures, but between humanity and something that evolved on a different world under a different sun with a different biology, a different sensory experience of reality, a different relationship to time, to communication, to what we would even call thought. The cognitive gulf would not be like the gap between a modern scientist and a medieval peasant.
It would be more like the gap between a human being and a bacterium.
Not in terms of worth.
I am not making a moral claim. I am making a structural one. The frameworks we use to understand the world, language, mathematics, logic as we practice it, may be so specific to the particular shape of our minds and our evolutionary history that they simply do not translate. Here is where it gets truly difficult.
We assume almost automatically that mathematics is a universal language. I have believed this myself for much of my life.
The idea that if you send prime numbers into space, any sufficiently intelligent civilization will recognize them as intentional.
That mathematics transcends biology. But I have become less certain of this as I have gotten older and thought about it more carefully. Our mathematics grew out of our particular way of perceiving the world.
Discrete objects, linear time, three dimensions of space that we can move through and one that we cannot.
What if another form of intelligence experiences reality in a fundamentally different geometric or temporal structure? What if their equivalent of mathematics is something our minds cannot even begin to represent?
What if when we finally make contact, we discover that the hardest problem is not reaching them? The hardest problem is that we cannot understand each other at all. And the universe which we have always imagined as a place full of potential conversations turns out instead to be full of intelligences so different from us that contact itself becomes the paradox not the silence the meeting that is the hard truth I carry with me and it is not a reason for despair it is a reason to think harder than we ever have before.
So, here we are. We have traveled a long way together in this conversation.
From the roof of a house in far rock away, looking up at a sky full of stars to the deepest and most unsettling implications of what it would mean to not be alone in a universe. this old and this large. I want to bring it all together now because I think there is something important that gets lost when people discuss this subject. Something that the science fiction and the sensationalism and the government hearings all manage to bury under noise and excitement and fear. The real significance of contact is not what they would do to us.
It is what it would do to our understanding of ourselves. Let me explain what I mean by that. Every major revolution in the history of human thought has shared a common structure.
It has taken something that human beings believed was central, special and unique and it has moved it to the periphery.
Capernacus told us the earth was not the center of the solar system. Darwin told us that human beings were not separately created but were continuous with all other life.
Freud, whatever you think of his methods, told us that we were not even fully transparent to ourselves.
Each revolution was a displacement.
Each one hurt.
Each one was resisted ferociously by people who felt that something precious was being taken from them.
contact with another intelligence would be the final displacement. the one that completes the series because it would tell us with absolute and undeniable certainty that mind itself, consciousness itself, the inner life that each of us experiences as the most intimate and irreducible fact of existence is not unique to us. Is not the crown of creation. Is not the universe. finally becoming aware of itself through one specific and privileged lineage. It would tell us that mind is something the universe does repeatedly in different forms uh under different suns through different chemistries that intelligence is not our distinction.
It is a natural phenomenon and I find that thought not diminishing but electrifying because if mind is something the universe does naturally then the universe is far stranger and far richer than even the most optimistic physicist has dared to imagine.
And the questions that follow from contact, not the political questions, not the military questions, but the genuine scientific and philosophical questions would be the most extraordinary questions our species has ever faced. What is the nature of consciousness when you encounter it in a form and completely unlike your own? Is there something universal about the experience of being aware?
Do all minds, regardless of their origin, eventually ask the same questions? Do they look up at the night sky and wonder?
Do they feel something between fear and wonder that they cannot name?
I think about this.
I think about it more than I probably should. And here is where I land. After all of it, after the paradox, after the silence, after the hard truths about our own limitations and our own history, we should go looking not because it is safe. It may not be safe, not because we are ready. We are almost certainly not ready.
But because the alternative which is to remain curled inward looking only at ourselves, telling ourselves that we are the only story worth telling in a universe of two trillion galaxies is the one choice I find genuinely unforgivable. Curiosity is not a luxury.
It is the only honest response to the situation we find ourselves in. Born on a small rock orbiting an ordinary star in one unremarkable corner of one galaxy among billions, asking questions that may be the most important questions any mind in this universe has ever asked.
