This is Porto Flavia, a port carved directly inside a mountain on the coast of Sardinia, Italy, near the town of Msoua. Between 1923 and 1924, it was built to solve a huge problem. Sardinia was rich in lead and zinc, but transporting these minerals from the mountains to ships was slow, dangerous, and expensive. Loading a single ship could sometimes take several days. Then came the brilliant idea of Italian engineer Chesare Vichelli. Instead of transporting the minerals to the port, why not build the port inside the mountain itself? Hundreds of meters of tunnels were carved through the rock, allowing gravity to move the minerals directly from the mountain into ships waiting at sea. When the project was completed in 1924, he named it after his daughter, Flavia.
