[00:00:00]I finished watching Mayamma, and I didn't expect it to affect me so much.

[00:00:04]It starts out seeming like a typical family drama, quite light even.

[00:00:08]But little by little it revealed itself to be a much deeper story.

[00:00:17]The protagonist is Pallavi, the woman everyone admires.

[00:00:21]She is elegant, polite, always smiling, a devoted mother, an exemplary wife.

[00:00:28]Her life seems perfect, organized, without flaws.

[00:00:34]But everything changes very quickly.

[00:00:36]A rumor surfaced about her past, something no one knew.

[00:00:41]And that past has a name, Kanchan.

[00:00:52]Gradually, the film reveals that years ago Pallavi had a relationship with another woman.

[00:00:59]It wasn't something fleeting. It was love.

[00:01:05]But at that time, there was no room for that.

[00:01:08]So she did what seemed possible. She hid it, moved on with her life, built a family, and left that part of herself behind.

[00:02:26]It stops being just about family, and becomes about living an entire life trying to be who others expect you to be. There are moments when Pallavi starts to truly take a stand, to stop trying to please everyone.

Her life changes when she meets Peeplika, Monica Dogra, an unconventional, confident, and bisexual artist who is married to Ijaz Khan, a theater activist with whom Astha works. Peeplika encourages Astha to explore her own identity and overcome barriers of gender, religion, and society. The two develop an intense and loving connection, leading Astha on a journey of self-discovery, questioning her traditional and unhappy life. I also enjoy lesbian Indian short films in their culture. It must be something very distant to talk about sexuality openly, which makes the forbidden love interesting in a way. The other one would be JLT's The Other Love Story.
