[00:01:34]Insects, lizards, scorpions, even small snakes.

[00:01:38]If it moves and fits in the bill, it can become a meal.

[00:01:49]They are famous for hunting rattlesnakes, but that danger will come later.

[00:06:12]Just about everything. Insects, scorpions, tarantulas, lizards, snakes, even venomous rattlesnakes.

[00:06:26]They are nature's ultimate opportunists.

[00:06:29]This diverse diet helps them survive in a harsh, unpredictable desert.

[00:06:53]You see, roadrunners don't have sharp talons or a tearing beak like hawks.

[00:06:58]Their beaks are strong, but designed for gripping, not cutting.

[00:07:05]By slamming a lizard or a snake against a rock again and again, they break its bones and make the body limp.

[00:07:11]A soft, elongated meal is much easier to swallow whole.

[00:07:26]The chicks grow fast, faster than you might think. In just a few weeks, they will nearly reach their adult size.

[00:07:33]To fuel that kind of growth, they need a lot of food all the time.

[00:07:45]>> At just a few days old, a chick can swallow a lizard almost as long as its own body.

[00:07:51]They eat so much so often that one parent is always out hunting while the other stays behind to guard the nest.

[00:08:02]So, what do you think fuels this incredible growth? It's the high-protein, energy-packed meals the parents work so hard to provide.
