>> Live from ABC News headquarters in New York City, it's Monday. Good morning, America.
>> And good morning, America. So glad you can join us on this Memorial Day.
>> And President Trump will be taking part in a wreath laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery on this day to remember the sacrifice of so many service members for our country.
>> Today we honor them. Also ahead, Memorial Day travel. Gio Bonitez and Elizabeth Schelsey are standing by with that.
>> Also coming up, the latest on the growing Ebola outbreak. Our Dr. Dr. Darien Sutton is standing by with the latest measures to help keep the virus out of the US. But we begin with Memorial Day travel. A record number of people are on the move this morning.
Transportation correspondent Gio Bonitez is at Newark Airport with an outlook on the trip home. Gio, good morning.
>> Hey, good morning. Happy Memorial Day to you and so many of our viewers. And with so many cancellations over the weekend, it's actually looking pretty smooth this morning here. So, that's some good news.
But keep in mind, it's going to be very, very busy with so many Americans hitting the road and hitting the skies. So, take a look right now at what we saw over the weekend because we saw these security lines at airports across the country that were just packed. It was yet another record travel weekend. As you mentioned, TSA says it will screen more than 18 million people between last Thursday and this Wednesday, kicking off a busy summer, as you can imagine.
According to AAA, the top five domestic destinations this weekend, Orlando, Seattle, New York, Vegas, and Miami. So if you're headed to any of those airports in those cities, leave plenty of time to get through security just in case. Whit.
>> Okay. So Gio, how are things looking on the roads out there?
>> So Whit, as we see in so many of these holidays, it's actually busiest on the roads. In fact, more than 39 million people are expected to hit the road and that is actually a record for Memorial Day. So many, many people will be on the roads, of course. So let's take a look at some of the best times to hit the roads because the folks over at Enrich, they actually give us this estimate.
They say that you should hit the road before 10:00 this morning to avoid the worst traffic. If you're on the road between noon and 5 though, okay, remember that noon and 5, expect plenty of company there. It's going to be among the busiest periods of the entire weekend.
>> All right, Gio, thanks so much.
>> All right, so in addition to the traffic that you just heard from Gio, travelers hitting road this Memorial Day weekend are also dealing with very high gas prices. Elizabeth Schelsey is here with more, including how to save money on your ride home. Good morning, Elizabeth.
something we all want to know. Good morning to all of you because right now this is the most expensive Memorial Day to fill up in four years. We are seeing oil prices dip a little bit this morning on optimism there will be a deal to end the Iran war. But right now that national average still about 50 cents away from its all-time high of $5 a gallon. According to Gas Buddy, drivers in at least 14 states, you can see them there on your screen, are facing new record gas prices for Memorial Day.
They're surpassing the high set back in 2022. And collectively, Americans are paying $2 billion more on gas this holiday weekend compared to last year.
And you really do see this when you look at the cost to fill up a midsize SUV like a Toyota Highlander. It is now 80 bucks. That's $25 more than last year. A pickup truck like a Ford F250 that runs on diesel now $190 to fill up. That is more than 70 extra. So no surprise here.
We are seeing drivers scale back.
Walmart, for example, says that its customers are now filling up with 10 gallons or less when they go to fill up now.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Everyone's feeling the pinch. Okay. So, a lot of people are going to be making their way back home after today. So, what can people do to save?
>> So, check those price tracking apps to see if there are lower prices in the town next to you or even the neighboring state. So, for example, Indiana suspended at state gas tax, prices there are a full dollar lower than in Illinois or Ohio. So, worth checking that. Also, this is tough, but you do want to drive a little bit slower. The energy department says that for every 5 miles an hour you drive over 50, it's the same as paying 27 cents extra per gallon for gas. So, put on that cruise control.
Leave early like Gio said. Avoid the traffic and just go slow.
>> Slow.
>> Exactly. Nice and easy.
>> Thanks, Elizabeth.
>> I think I've been wasting a lot of money there. All right, Elizabeth. Thank you.
And now to the Memorial Day forecast.
The weekend was a wash out here on the East Coast, but there is still one more day left to try and salvage the holiday.
Meteorologist Leslie Lopez is here to tell us if things are going to finally be drying out. Hey Leslie, good morning.
>> There is some hope in some places.
That's for sure. But I do want to take you out to what has been happening. A lot of flooding. This is over into Beville, Texas. We're tracking storms moving through the area. So high flood waters right here. An infant and another person had to be rescued. And also in addition to that, we're watching out for some flooding out towards Birmingham, Alabama. You're looking at some flooded roadways, ponding and pooling of water.
So be extra careful. Again, the saying goes, turn around, don't drown. So, if you see that water just starting to build, you're better off, safer, and moving. Now, this is what it looks like at the moment. We're seeing some storms moving out towards the southeast, all the way out towards the northeast. The good news is the northeast, you're going to see some clearing later on today. So, again, there's that hope for some sunshine. But then you head out to the south and we're still talking about floods as a possibility. So flood watches, dense fog advisories even up towards areas closer towards the looks like areas of not only the Midwest, but you're looking at areas closer towards it looks like Michigan, moving into areas closer towards it looks like even Nashville. And then we're moving out towards some flooded areas down into New Orleans and Fateville. So you got to be very careful. All right, we're going to send it back over to you.
>> Okay, Leslie, we'll check back with you in just a bit. Now to the latest on the potential peace deal with Iran. There are signs the US and Iran are making progress, but President Trump says he's telling his team not to rush into an agreement. Chief foreign correspondent Ian Panel is tracking it all from Tel Aviv. Ian, good morning.
>> Yeah, good morning to you. Whit mixed signals as you say over the weekend from President Trump about the prospects of a deal to end the war with Iran and reopen the straight of moves. We've seen economic turmoil, high gas prices as you've just been hearing, and instability in the Middle East.
President Trump now saying he's in no rush to reach a deal with Iran. Over the weekend, he first said a solution was largely negotiated. But on social media, Trump now saying, "I've informed my representatives not to rush into a deal.
Both sides must take their time and get it right." And again taken to social media this morning saying the deal that he's proposing is much better than the one signed by President Obama. And this morning, a spokesman for Iran's foreign ministry echoing that, saying many of the issues have been dealt with, but that doesn't mean a signed agreement is imminent. He also criticized US negotiators, saying Iran is witnessing frequent changes in positions. A senior administration official telling ABC News there'll be a limited interim agreement.
Now, that's going to include opening uh reopening straight for moose and an end to the US blockade. The officials saying there'll also be a commitment from the Iranians to negotiate the removal of their stock pile of highlyenriched uranium, but nothing has been signed and there's no agreement on how on earth this is going to be done. And Iranian state media says a draft agreement does not include any nuclear commitments.
Meanwhile, some Republicans in Congress are pushing back, arguing if any deal allows Iran to keep nuclear material, then they won't support it. Mary, >> still a lot to be worked out here. Ian, thank you. And now to the latest on the shooting near the White House over the weekend. What we are learning about the suspect who was shot and killed by the Secret Service after authorities say he opened fire at a security checkpoint.
Senior White House correspondent Selena Wang was there when the shots rang out.
Selena, good morning.
>> And good morning to you, Mary. The president was in the Oval Office during the shooting. No Secret Service personnel were injured, but a bystander was struck by gunfire. And for all of us who covered the White House, it was a scary echo of what happened just a month ago when we ducked and covered at the correspondence dinner as we heard those shots rang out this morning. An urgent investigation is underway after gunshots rang out near the White House.
>> Medic one respond for a shooting at 17th Street in Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest.
>> I was just yards away preparing to go live on air when I heard a flurry of gunshots.
The shots were fired shortly after 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. My crew and I ducking for cover.
>> And then we ran.
>> We have to evacuate. Shooting. We have to evacuate. Shooting. We have to evacuate. Shooting.
>> Sprinting across the north lawn with the rest of the press corps. Law enforcement swarming to the scene. President Trump was in the Oval Office with his aids as a gunman approached a White House security checkpoint, took a gun out of a bag, and started firing. No Secret Service personnel were injured, but a bystander was struck by gunfire. DC police say the gunshot wound was non-lifethreatening.
Officials say the suspect has a history of incidents involving the White House.
He encountered law enforcement in June 2025 for blocking a point of entry at the White House. He was detained and involuntarily committed for a mental evaluation. One month later, he was arrested after he attempted to enter a White House checkpoint, telling officers he was Jesus Christ and that he wanted to get arrested. Court records showing a judge had ordered he stay away from White House grounds.
The president is now using this incident as justification for his new White House ballroom. And in a illegal filing overnight, the Justice Department revealing new details about the project, saying it includes a roof with a drone port and a spot for rooftop snipers.
Guys, >> yeah, just terrifying moments there, Selena. And we just want to say we are so grateful that you and the team are okay and we appreciate your reporting this morning, Selena. Thank you. Okay, we're going to turn now to the growing Ebola outbreak in Africa. More than 900 cases reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo with more than 115 deaths. The US is expanding travel restrictions this morning as health officials in Africa warn 10 other countries of an elevated transmission risk. So, let's bring in emergency room physician and ABC News medical correspondent Dr. Darien Sutton with more. Okay, Dr. Darian, so we know these cases are rising. What are health officials doing here in the United States to make sure this virus does not spread by air travel here at home?
>> And added layers of protection here. So when we talk about air travel and the restrictions that are in place right now, the CDC has said all non- US citizens are effectively barred if you've traveled to these key areas of concern. And for American cit citizens who have traveled to areas including Uganda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo within the past 21 days, remember that's how long it can take to develop symptoms after exposed to Ebola. Uh you have to go through or your flights are funneled through either Atlanta, Washington DC, or Houston.
There you'll be screened and if you pass that screening, you're effectively allowed to go home and your local health department will follow up. Now, the overall risk to the United States remains low. If we remember from 2014, an incredibly large outbreak. Only four Americans contracted the virus inside the United States. But this current outbreak seems to be spreading at a faster pace.
>> Yeah. And so, remind us of some of the basics here. I mean, how contagious is Ebola and how does it actually, you know, transfer from person to person?
>> Well, the contagiousness of Ebola really comes into direct when it when you come into direct contact with the bodily fluids of someone who is infected. And people are typically only contagious when they are symptomatic. Now, here's the problem. This is a affecting communities that are in dire need.
They're already facing a crisis and not only limitations in health care, but also access and preventative uh equipment and that is what's leading to the speed of the spread in Ebola in Africa right now.
>> And Dr. Darien, we've been talking about how people from all over the world are going to be traveling to the US in just a few weeks for the FIFA World Cup.
Should people be concerned about this here?
>> I think you should have a heightened level of awareness, especially if you're going to be intermingling with a lot of people from a lot of different places and you're participating in international travel. Now, these players that are coming from the Democratic Republic of Congo are training in Europe. Uh, but right now, they're going to still have to be screened and go through the effective measures to prevent the possibility of spread of this virus.
>> All right, something to watch. Thank you, doctor. We appreciate it. All right, now to the toxic emergency in California. A chemical tank at an aerospace facility is threatening a massive leak or a catastrophic explosion. Tens of thousands of people have already been forced to evacuate, but there is some hope this morning.
Alex Stone is in Cypress, California with the latest. Alex, good morning.
>> Good morning. With this is a slowmoving disaster here, but there is that glimmer of hope this morning. Firefighters saying there is a crack in the top of the tank. They're hoping that crack allowed some of the pressure to be relieved and it could put an end to all of this.
Crews with the Orange County Fire Authority working through the night to stop a massive chemical tank from exploding, checking to see if some pressure has been released in hopes of avoiding a worst case scenario. This comes after a specialized team was able to get close enough to that 7,000galon tank full of hazardous liquid Saturday night, finding a crack.
>> The bloody threat is the worst case catastrophic event that we've been talking about. We are not there yet. The concern being this tank filled with a toxic chemical could either fail and release a deadly liquid and gas or explode in a giant fireball along with fears that if the tank explodes, it will cause tanks around it to explode as well. A 10 square mile area in Orange County is now empty. More than 50,000 residents evacuated. I'm scared cuz I don't know what's going to happen and and I don't know if anything that already is in the air is going to affect us.
>> Even short-term exposure to the highly volatile chemical inside methylmethyl kryolate could cause skin and eye irritation and breathing problems. The tank located near major attractions including Angel Stadium. The Los Angeles Angels played their game there last night despite the ongoing scare.
Overnight, firefighters took part in what they're calling a high-risk operation, actually climbing the side of the tank and getting up on top of it, taking a look at that crack. They say if the crack did allow some of the pressure to be released, some of the evacuation orders could be lifted today, Mary.
>> Okay, Alex, thank you. And now to breaking news this morning. Pope Leo speaking out about artificial intelligence. Tom Sufi Burge joins us with those details. Tom, good morning.
>> Good morning, Mary. Yeah, this is a sweeping vision from Pope Leo, a warning to us all about some of the disruptive effects of AI. The Pope making his declaration at the Vatican this morning in his first papal encyclical, a type of open letter. Leo setting out his desire to protect human dignity and guard against fake info and explicit content in an age when technology threatens to replace so many jobs and other roles in society. Pope Leo writing quote we are truly experiencing an eclipse of the sense of what it means to be human and warning of quote the unbridled promotion and implementation of technology at the expense of human dignity and the damage caused when chatbots and other technologies exploit our need for human relationships. Leo also offering solutions calling for government regulation and better protection for workers impacted by AI. Rachel.
>> Okay, Tom, thank you. All right, we're going to switch gears now and talk about some sports. We got to turn to the NBA playoffs and the Spurs tying their series with the Thunder overnight. Will Reeve is here with the biggest moments.
And Will, that halfcourt shot, Wendy, >> it was impressive. Imp. Good morning, everyone. I know George is watching, so I brought a stat for you to start us off. Teams that go down 3-1 in an NBA playoff series have about a 5% chance of winning that series. So, the Spurs, they had stolen game one in OKC in that double OT thriller, but then the Thunder had been rather dominant winning games two and three. So San Antonio needed to win and they needed Victor Webbyama to be the best player on the floor and to outplay back-to-back MVP Shay Gildas Alexander and that is what he was and what he did. Everything was going right for Wemby and the Spurs. That half court shot that Rachel mentioned, the half court heave at the halftime buzzer. Here it is, I think. Yeah, literally from the logo, that's cash. The Spurs take the lead into the half. They then expanded on that in the third quarter and it was a wrap. SGA and other starters not even playing the fourth quarter cuz it was such a blowout. Webby finished with 33 points, eight rebounds, five assists, three blocks. The Spurs win 103 to 82.
And they had the so-called Spurs nuns blessing the players pregame. No, this is like this is a real thing. You laugh, but that Luke Cornet there is a devout Catholic. They had some courtside seats rocking Spurs jerseys over their habits.
So now the series heads back to OKC for game five. Whoever wins two out of the next three is in the finals. Oh yeah, I love that. Okay, so let's turn to the Eastern Conference Finals because that's what's happening out west. The Knicks are looking to complete a sweep of the Cavs tonight. If they pull it off, it will be their first trip to the NBA finals in 27 years. I Kajachi is here with that. They're on a roll of 10 winning games in a row. They just got to like lock in tonight.
>> I'm not excited. I'm not excited. But good morning, guys. Hey, they have a chance to do something tonight that New York has been dreaming about for a long time, which is finish the job. They lead Cleveland three games to none and have a chance to bring out the broomsticks.
Yes, the Knicks took game three 121 to 108. Jaylen Brunson leading the way with 30 points. So, the formula is pretty simple. Brunson runs the show. The Knicks stay physical and then they try to keep Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley for turning this into a Cavs comeback story. And back here in New York, yeah, the party may have to move inside. The NYPD says it won't support any more outdoor watch parties outside Madison Square Garden. Oh, the message is cheer loud, but maybe not in the middle of 33rd Street. Okay, Knicks fans, they want to sweep, but the city wants everyone to make it to work on Tuesday.
Game four is tonight in Cleveland, 8 Eastern on ESPN, guys. It's going to be a good time.
>> You were contained for a moment there.
>> Yeah, that's right. I tried to just reel it in a little bit.
>> I don't think the Knicks fans are going to stop celebrating. Nothing going to keep the energy of this city.
>> There will be the job.
>> It's going to be quite a night.
>> Coming up though, we do want to shift gears because emotional tributes to Kyle Bush coming in over the weekend. And also ahead here, the stunning midair collision of a small plane and a paraglider. That moment there caught on camera. How the paraglider managed to actually land safely. Oh, >> close call. And new at 7:30, what triggered this stampede at a bike festival that left 19 people injured.
>> And coming up, Indianapolis 500 winner Felix Rosenquist joins us. Stay with us.
This isn't about revenge.
>> It's about preventing another war.
>> Strap in.
>> Welcome back to GMA. Fans are strapped in and celebrating a galaxy far, far away because The Mandalorian and Grou took the number one spot at the box office this Memorial Day weekend, crossing the 100 million dollar milestone in ticket sales. And the pair spotted cheering on the Knicks and the Cavs for the Eastern Conference Finals game as well. Mandalorian and Grou is in theaters everywhere right now. Pretty cool.
>> And actually everywhere apparently. All right, and Will is back with the headlines. Will, >> hello again, guys. Guys, we have a lot to get to here at 7:30. Beginning with five Chicago police officers hospitalized after authorities say a car plowed into a crowd during a so-called teen takeover. You can see the aftermath right there of the crash. Police say a teen driver was arrested. A gun was recovered from the vehicle. The officers are expected to be okay. 19 people were injured Sunday in a stampede during a bike festival in South Carolina.
Officials said the stampede started when one person began running. It lasted only seconds. Three people were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The rest suffered minor injuries. And a boy scout troop in West Virginia found themselves stranded along the Capen River when flood waters began rapidly rising. Look at all that water there.
You can see the boats on the other side of the bank. The scouts headed for land before they realized they were on the opposite side of the river from their cabins and any access to any roads. So, a water rescue team had to ferry nearly 30 scouts and their leaders to safety.
And a big game in the NHL last night, the Stanley Cup playoffs. The best team in the league is on the ropes. The Colorado Avalanche now down 3 0 to the Vegas Golden Knights. They were the Avalanche were up three nothing in the game. The Golden Knights come back. They end up winning and they are up 3. One more game. They're into the Stanley Cup final. The President's Trophy winner in the NHL hasn't won the Stanley Cup since I think 2013. They say it might be a curse and that's bearing out right here for that.
>> Okay, we'll see. Playoff fever for sure.
Thank you, Will. Now to the emotional tributes to Kyle Bush as NASCAR and its fans honored one of the biggest names in the sport who died suddenly last week at the age of 41. Iachi is back with more on that. Ike, good morning.
>> Good morning. With the emotional tributes for NASCAR great Kyle Bush pouring in at two of the biggest races of the year. Fans, drivers, and his family remembering the two-time Cup Series champion. A legacy that lives far beyond the racetrack.
An emotional tribute and moment of silence for NASCAR legend Kyle Bush and his family at the Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte Sunday. A race Bush was supposed to compete in.
>> He competed like he had something to prove every single race when in reality he'd already proven everything.
What I think we'll miss most isn't the winds. It's the guy who quietly wanted to help a teammate or give some advice.
>> Bush's family, including his wife, Samantha, and two children, stood on one end of Pit Road to honor and remember him. Another driver's son, even trying to console Bush's 11-year-old son, Brexton. Samantha, I want you to know that this sport stands with you and that you and your children are NASCAR family forever.
>> Richard Childress Racing retiring Bush's number eight. It will be unretired for Brexton if he chooses to follow in his dad's footsteps.
>> On lap 18, we remember Kyle Bush.
>> The racing world also honoring Bush at the Indianapolis 500. On lap 18, race officials lighting up the scoring pylon in tribute to Bush. The moment coming just days after Bush's sudden death at 41. His family now saying a medical evaluation found severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, leading to rapid and overwhelming complications. ABC News learning an ambulance was called the day before he died to the General Motors Charlotte Technical Center in Concord, North Carolina. I've got an individual that's uh shortness of breath, very hot, thinks he's going to pass out, and is coughing up some blood. This morning, one of the most moving tributes coming from his son Brexton, who changed his social media profile photo to an image of him hugging his dad. Bush and his wife had struggles with fertility and started a charity that helped couples pay for IVF treatments. Some are now honoring his memory by donating to that cause, guys. Yeah, so many remember him this morning. Okay, Ike, thank you. And so, let's bring back in Dr. Darien Sutton to talk about these complications. He was just 41 years old.
So, he had a severe form of pneumonia that progressed into sepsis. I mean, how does that happen and who is most at risk for that?
>> Unfortunately, these types of events happen within emergency rooms across the United States quite commonly. Now, it is rare that someone who is 41 years old progresses to a dangerous infection like sepsis. And to better understand pneumonia is an infection of the lungs.
Sepsis is what happens when any infection in the body goes under control uncontrolled and leads to an overwhelming response. And while there are certain groups that are at higher risk, older adults, those with a history of heart disease and diabetes, this can also happen to healthier people, although it is uncommon.
>> So what are some of the symptoms that sets pneumonia apart from other illnesses?
>> Yeah. Well, pneumonia can be due to a variety of things. Fungal infections, viral infections, bacterial infections, and the coughing is the most common symptom. But symptoms that should never be ignored include shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, you're not able to maintain your sentences. That's why talking to patients is a part of my exam. And any type of confusion or any concerning symptoms that seem out of the norm, you should seek out help and get evaluated at the very least.
>> Yeah, pay attention to those. Okay, Dr. Darien, we really appreciate it. Thank you. Okay, coming up here on GMA, a mid-air collision caught on camera. Will has that story. Will.
>> Yeah, this is stunning video, Rachel.
Well, a paraglider in Austria is in flight here when a plane collides with her parachute. And we're going to hear from her and how she managed to land safely coming up next.
And we are back now with that shocking midair collision in the paraglider who somehow managed to survive this. Will Ree is back with that story. Hey Will, it's pretty hard to imagine.
>> I mean, it's amazing that this happened and that everyone is okay here. So, you're about to see a plane collide with a paraglider's parachute about a foot or two lower. This is a different story.
So, miraculously, the paraglider is okay after this hearttoppping incident. Take a look. This is the moment a plane collides with the canopy of a paraglider, sending her plunging to the ground.
The woman named Sabrina scrambles to pull her secondary parachute. It deploys, but it's terribly twisted, sending her spinning out of control.
Then it fully inflates. Sabrina regaining control. You can see the mangled primary chute trailing behind high above the Austrian Alps. Tracking data shows Sabrina's flight over the mountains, capturing the moment she suddenly fell out of the sky, dropping 2,000 ft in 2 minutes. Sabrina later writing, "I actually still can't believe that I'm sitting here typing this and that aside from a few nasty bruises and some general contusions, absolutely nothing happened." Police say the pilot of the plane did not see her until it was too late to steer away.
The scary situation all too real for Sabrina, who was able to land safely.
>> Wow. So, she is okay. Sabrina is an experienced paraglider. What an experience that was there. She was later picked up by a police helicopter. Wow.
Can't believe she's okay.
>> I know. The way that plane just comes out of nowhere. I mean, you don't even see it coming.
>> I think if you're her, you'd rather have it come from behind. If it's coming right at you, you've got a long time to worry about what's about to happen. So, >> or not at all. I take not at all.
>> Not at all. Skip it all.
>> Glad she's okay.
>> All right. Coming up next here, our play of the day. The winner of the Indie 500 joins us to talk about his historic victory.
Back now with our play of the day.
History made last night as Felix Rosenquist wins the Indianapolis 500 in the closest ever finish. 200s of a second over David Malucas. And we are thrilled to have Felix joining us this morning. Felix, good morning to you.
It's great to have you. So, how does it feel to be waking up an Indianapolis 500 winner?
It's it's incredible. I'm sitting right here where where it all went down uh about uh 15 hours ago and it's Yeah, it's just an unbelievable feeling uh to win this race in front of, you know, almost half a million people uh sitting here in the grand stands. It's every driver's dream is to win it in that way with that that close finish. Closest finish ever. Uh yeah, I it's it's still very hard to take in the >> You said it was the coolest way that you could finish. Take us through what was going through your mind in the very final seconds of that race. Yeah. So, we have that late restart and uh I was third in line when that when that went down and I pretty much I had a good run and I just stuck it on the outside and I was pretty much just hoping it was it was it kind of like a make it or break it maneuver. And that's what's so cool about Indie that you know every every driver here they were willing to risk everything to win this race and you know risk the car even their life to to to an extent and uh yeah I'm just so glad it worked out. It was so close and and but it was cool. Every driver gave each other room and uh we it allowed it to be such a good finish for the fans and u yeah to win to win it that way is uh in any race it's so special but to do it here it's just unbelievable >> 200 of a second really unbelievable and there is so much tradition around the Indy500 so I have to ask you uh how'd that milk taste was was it as good as you imagined it would be >> it was very good I I felt kind of dehydrated I don't think I've drank milk since I was in school. And uh yeah, what a moment. Uh it is a tradition that's been, you know, for I think it's about 100 years and there's been so many, you know, great champions of the sport here at the at the yard of bricks uh doing what I did yesterday. And I know I watch my heroes when I grow up doing this and yeah, it's still very I I still don't really believe it's happening. I I might just wake up at any moment and it's all a dream.
>> No, it is not a dream. It is happening.
I also want to mention this has been quite a month for you because you also became a firsttime father and your wife posted this adorable picture uh with the caption uh with your daughter Stella saying, "Girl, you have no idea what just happened." What was your family's reaction to your historic win?
>> It's crazy cuz she wasn't here and uh my also my mom and my dad, they decided to go come to another race later this year.
So obviously then I won it. Yeah. No, it was it's just such a cool thing.
becoming a dad was already the, you know, the greatest thing that ever happened to me and my wife. And I just feel like probably the happiest man in the world and and so lucky, you know, it's so lucky to be part of uh, you know, having a a healthy daughter, healthy wife after that and and then to, you know, two weeks later just be out here and fighting for the win. Just to have the opportunity really, it it's it's unreal. And uh I think I think my range of emotions, you know, I'm I'm Swedish and I don't really have a lot of emotions naturally, but they they the spectrum of emotions have widened by by a lot this month of May. It's unreal.
>> Well, one blessing after another. Felix, congratulations once again on winning the Indianapolis 500.
>> Thank you.
>> Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you.
>> Good for him. And coming up here, breaking at 8, the rescue of a man who found himself trapped in a cave for 6 hours.
Good morning, America. It's 8:00 a.m.
Memorial Day travel rush as tens of millions of Americans get set to hit the road to return home. What to expect if you're heading out and how you can save on soaring gas prices.
Dramatic rescue. How a man trapped in a cave for hours was saved. We hear from one of his rescuers.
The joy of reading.
>> I'll borrow this one.
>> Disney teaming up with blue star families to bring books to so many kids.
The routine wisdom tooth extraction for a 21-year-old college volleyball player.
>> It's yeah, insane how quick life can change. that led to a lifesaving diagnosis and how her sister helped save her life.
>> And get ready to save.
>> What's the smartest way to jump start summer? How about the best Memorial Day deals and steals >> this morning? Triple the deals up to 75% off for your home, kitchen, wellness, and much more. And the kicker, >> every single deal this morning has >> it's a deals and steals takeover with special guests and they're saying >> good MORNING >> live from ABC News headquarters in New York City. It's Monday. Good morning, America.
>> And good morning, America. Great to have Tori Johnson here this morning with all those teachers joining us, too. Yeah, looking forward to that. Lots of deals ahead. And we also have a live look here at Arlington National Cemetery on this Memorial Day, the final resting place for so many who've given their lives for this country.
>> Yeah, we thank all of our military families for their service and for their sacrifice.
>> Yeah, we do. And we want to get to our top stories right now breaking at 8.
Starting with Memorial Day travel. A record number of people on the move this morning. Transportation correspondent Gio Bonitez is at Newark Airport with the outlook for that trip home. Gio, good morning.
Hey, Whit. Good morning again. Yeah, we saw a lot of cancellations over the weekend, most notably in the Dallas area yesterday, but fingers crossed things are looking pretty good this morning.
Right now, I want to show you these images from those security lines over the weekend at airports across the country because they were simply packed.
It was yet another record travel weekend. TSA says it's going to screen more than 18 million people between last Thursday and this Wednesday, kicking off a very busy summer. And according to AAA, the top five domestic destinations this weekend were Orlando, Seattle, New York, Las Vegas, and Miami. So just keep that in mind if you're headed to any of the airports in those cities. Just leave plenty of time there. All right. So if you're going on the road, we're talking about more than 39 million people traveling by car. And that is by far the biggest way people are traveling right now to their destinations. Uh that is a a record for Memorial Day. So for your trip home today, Enrich is telling us that you should hit the road before 10 this morning because if you get on the road after noon and up until 5:00 p.m.
So that window of noon to 5:00 p.m., it is going to be extremely busy on the roads. Mary, >> it sure is. All right, Gio, thank you.
So you want to get out there right now or wait until later, but travelers who are hitting the road this Memorial Day weekend, of course, dealing with those high gas prices. Elizabeth Schosey is back with how to save money on the ride home. Good morning again, Elizabeth.
>> Good morning, Mary. So, Americans are paying a total of more than $2 billion extra for gas this long holiday weekend compared to last year. Oil prices are down a little bit this morning, but the national average for a gallon of regular stands at $447.
That is the highest price on Memorial Day in four years. We are now up more than 50% for that national average since the start of the Iran War. And according to Gas Buddy, drivers in 14 states, you see them there, are facing new record gas prices on Memorial Day, surpassing the highs that they set back in 2022.
When you look at the cost to fill up a midsize SUV, so this really kind of lays out the prices people are paying as they're driving home today. $80 now for a Toyota Highlander. That's 25 extra compared to last year. A pickup truck like a Ford F250 popular truck that runs on diesel up almost $200 or it's $200 now to fill up. That's up almost 70 bucks from last year. We are seeing some signs that drivers are scaling back because of those prices. Walmart says customers are only filling up with 10 gallons or less. So, if you are on that road trip, use those price tracking apps like Gas Buddy, for example, to check prices in neighboring towns or states.
We've talked about some states that have suspended their gas taxes. So, that eliminates some of the price at the pump. Indiana a full dollar cheaper than its neighboring states, Illinois and Ohio, because of that. So, worth checking.
>> Yeah. Anything helps.
>> Exactly. And a little bit will go a long way when you're looking at those prices.
>> Okay, Elizabeth, thank you. Well, Memorial Day weekend was a wash out for so many, especially here on the East Coast. Meteorologist Leslie Lopez is here to tell us how today is looking.
Good morning, Leslie.
>> Hey, good morning. I mean, listen, we do have some flooding happening in some places. Take a look at the video right here. This is over into Beville, Texas.
You could see that that flood water really high. There was an infant and another person that had to be rescued.
Thankfully, they are okay. And then moving into areas of Birmingham, Alabama. You're also watching some ponding and pooling of water. A tough travel day for this area as more rain is expected. We have flood watches all the way from areas of Montgomery, Alabama, all the way to Atlanta, Georgia. But also flood watches down through areas of Lafayette and New Orleans. And then dense fog advisories through this morning for the Midwest in the Ohio Valley. Watching out for some good clearing though. This is good news. I mean, if you are out towards New York, it has been soggy. It has been cloudy.
But now 75 degrees for New York. Later on this afternoon, there'll be nice clearing. It'll still stay wet throughout today, even into tomorrow for the south. And then getting out towards the west, it looks good. 68 degrees into Los Angeles. Lots of sunshine and way above normal temperatures moving into Fargo, North Dakota. Very warm there.
And it looks like it's going to be at least a very nice one in some of these areas. Clearing in others, but rain in the south, so be careful. All right, wait. Over you.
>> Some improvement on the way. We'll take it. Okay, Leslie. Now to the terrifying ordeal for a man in New York stuck in a cave, unable to move. He was there for 6 hours before he could be rescued. And this morning, we're hearing from one of the people who helped save him. Hannah Bata is here with that story. Hannah, good morning.
>> Good morning, you guys. Some scary stuff here and it really wasn't as simple as hoisting the hiker out of this cave in upstate New York. Rescuers had actually chip away some of that rock just to make enough space to pull him from that tight passage. They had to move carefully and fast.
This morning, the terrifying images of a Brooklyn man trapped in the crevice of a cave, wedged in the rock and quickly running out of time. He was uh really jammed in there more than I had expected.
>> The man was hiking with friends at Merlin's Cave in upstate New York when he slipped into the crevice about 400 ft from the cave entrance, completely immobilized.
>> With any cave rescue, hypothermia is a guarantee. It's about 50° in the cave and it's almost 100% humidity and that gets you cold quick, especially when you're not moving.
>> The rescue crew racing to reach him, then using a hammer drill to carefully remove parts of the rock. successfully freeing the man who then walked out on his own.
>> For most people, that's like their worst nightmare. Uh, so he did such a great job keeping a positive attitude. He was giving me thumbs up. Um, he was we were telling jokes.
>> Now, the hiker was hypothermic and had to actually be warmed up before exiting the cave, but he gave those who saved him some high fives before leaving.
>> Close call.
>> Certainly scary.
>> A close call. Yeah, that was a small crevice there, too.
>> Thank you, Hannah. All right, coming up here on GMA in our morning menu, the college volleyball player who had a routine wisdom tooth extraction and got a shocking diagnosis. How her sister helped save her life. And also ahead, we're celebrating America. Disney teams up with Blueest Star families for a big book event that helps out service members and their families. Plus, Tom Hanks is debuting his new project. We've got an exclusive sneak peek.
>> And we have a Deals and Steals Memorial Day Spectacular. Tori Johnson did all the heavy lifting for us to get the savings and with free shipping and she brought us some very special guests, too. They're all there, the teachers.
That's coming up right here on GM.
We're back now with our GMA cover story.
A 21-year-old college volleyball player whose routine tooth extraction led to a shocking diagnosis. And Sophie Fle is here with that story. This is really surprising.
>> Yeah, it really is. Guys, good morning.
Most of us have our wisdom teeth out and never think twice about it. For Kendall Sherah, hers was the start of a journey that led to her sister saving her life.
For 21-year-old Kendall Sherah, a routine wisdom tooth extraction led to a diagnosis she never saw coming.
>> It's Yeah. Insane how quick life can change.
>> Yara with the serve.
>> Kendall the captain of her college volleyball team at UW Green Bay soon finding the sight of the tooth surgery infected. Sick for months. A bone marrow biopsy finally revealing a shocking diagnosis. Acute myoid leukemia.
>> I had to ask, do I have a high chance of surviving? And at the age of 21, I don't feel like that's something anyone should have to ask. AML typically develops in the bone marrow in the cells that would turn into white blood cells. It's most common in older adults and tends to progress quickly. Immediate treatment is vital. Her whole family, including little sister L, rallied by her side at Lurie Cancer Center at Northwestern in Chicago.
>> It was just the most devastating moment that I've probably faced in my life.
>> After a month of chemotherapy, Kendall's doctors delivering more difficult news.
she would need a stem cell transplant.
>> It allows us to harness our donor's immune system to recognize that this is a bad disease. This is leukemia. It needs to fight it.
>> Doctors scoured the donor registry for a match, but came up empty. Then came an answer no one expected. Kendall's little sister L was a perfect match.
>> The chances of any one sibling being a full match is 25%. And so Kendall was lucky. It was one of the brightest moments of this journey.
>> Kendall receiving her sister's life-saving cells in July 2025. Kendall is now back at college training with her team again, forever grateful for her little sister.
>> She definitely holds it over my head a little bit. Getting more and more people into the registry is super important. I think it is inspiring to be someone that can save a life.
And Kendall's doctor tells us she is in complete remission. Now on maintenance therapy to keep the cancer from coming back and reminds us that joining the bone marrow donor registry is easy. You just have to swab your cheek and if you get the call, you can save someone's life.
>> Yeah, >> everything about this story just incredible.
>> I know. And such an important reminder.
It really is just that easy cheek swap.
>> Definitely.
>> Thank you, Sophie. And now to Disney Celebrates America. We are counting down to our country's 250th birthday with all kinds of events, including one with the Blueest Star Families Organization.
That's a real page turner for military families. Will Reeve is back with those details. Hey Will.
>> Hi again, Mary. Our parent company Disney has been supporting the Blueest Star Families Organization for nearly 15 years. And one of the most meaningful collaborations is the Blueest Star Books program. It promotes literacy and family connection. Take a look.
The Walt Disney Company and Blueest Star families joined forces for their biggest ever Blueest Star Books event at the Library of Congress in Washington DC.
>> For over 100 years, Disney has supported those who serve. And for over a decade, we've enthusiastically partnered with Blueest Star families to bring really meaningful moments that can bring military families together. This year, Disney is donating $2.5 million to Blueest Star families and their partners at National Geographic donating 500 books to the event. For over a decade, Blueest Star Book Events have worked to provide more than 370,000 books.
>> Hundreds and hundreds of military kids came out today. Each of them got five books to take home for their own libraries. What helps my family feel more connected during those hard times like deployments and TD wise is just having some things that they can kind of do and activities.
>> One of those activities story time with Disney's biggest book lover ever.
>> I'll borrow this one.
>> That one. But you've read it twice.
>> Well, it's my favorite.
>> Belle.
>> Time to go. Good night, Cinderella.
>> Families also got to meet Mickey, Minnie, and many more beloved characters. The connection between Disney, Blueest Star families, and our nation's military and their kids is such a powerful one.
>> It sure is. That's so great. Along with the book events, Disney's donation will help fund care packages and other events designed to bring connection and joy to military families across the country.
Great stuff there on this Memorial Day.
>> So important. Thanks, Will. Okay, now to more Disney fun with a program at Walt Disney World called Cool Kids Summer.
Cameron Mat is here with the details.
Hey, Cameron.
>> Hey guys. Thanks for having me. Cool kids summer, everybody. It's bringing even more ways to have a blast in the park this summer. Toy Story 5 voice actresses Scarlett Spears and Michael Michelle Harris headed to Disney World to check it out.
>> Yeea, y'all made it.
>> It's time for Cool Kids Summer at Walt Disney World. Two cool kids starring in Toy Story 5. Scarlet Spears and Michael Michelle Harris hitting the parks with their families.
Space Ranger. The two having a blast on Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin.
>> Playing games with everyone's favorite dog, Blueie, like Keepy Upy.
>> Hit it. HIT IT. YEAH.
>> BYE. HI, BINGO.
>> Sending Blueie and her sister, Bingo, off to Bluey's Wild World at Conservation Station at Disney's Animal Kingdom.
>> The hat looks awesome, dude. That looks so cool. and stepping foot in the brand new courtyard at Hollywood Studios inspired by the Walt Disney Studios lot in California.
>> Look up there. It's Jim Cricket.
>> Oh, Maui. That's Maui.
>> Those are big m >> singing and dancing along with Mickey and the gang at Disney Junior Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live.
I think he can use the wall.
>> So, what does this dynamic duo think makes a kid cool?
>> Play with their toys.
>> Have imagination.
>> Yeah, I think what makes a kid cool is them being themselves.
>> I know this kid is always herself. She's super cool. The coolest kid.
>> You are, too.
>> A lot of wisdom there from the little ones. I think that makes the adults cool, too, by the way, being authentic.
Cool Kid Summer starts tomorrow at Walt Disney World, which is great. July 7th, I'll have my daughter there for her birthday, so she gets >> a cool kid as well. And of course, Toy Story 5 is exclusively in theaters on June 19th. Check it out.
>> Happy birthday to your daughter, too.
It's a little early, but I appreciate that, but we're planning it. She's going to be one of the I'll be one of the cool adults.
>> THAT'S WHAT I WAS GOING TO SAY. The kids have fun, but so do the parents.
>> All right. And Cam, you're going to be back with us on GMA3. We're looking forward to that. Now to celebrating America 250, our country's 250th birthday. This segment is sponsored by Navy Federal Credit Union. This morning, they are saluting a Marine who turned a life-changing injury into an opportunity to help others. GMA lifestyle contributor Lorie Bergamato tells us his story.
>> For as long as he can remember, 42-year-old Captain Derek Herrera has felt called to serve our country.
>> This was what I was put on the earth to do. After years of training in the Marine Corps, Derek was selected to become a special operations officer in an elite unit called the Marine Raiders.
>> It's essentially the Marines version of uh Army Green Brays or Navy Seals. We all have just a different flavor and a different culture.
>> But in 2012, while leading his team on patrol in Afghanistan, Derek was shot in the spine and instantly paralyzed from the chest down. That day for me uh left me with these lifelong injuries, but it also showed me just how lucky I am to be alive due to the heroism and bravery of my team.
With the help of the Marine Raider Foundation, Derek dove into the latest advancements in medical technology, including this robotic exoskeleton that allowed him to take his first steps again and even stand as he received his bronze star for Valor at his retirement ceremony. I you >> and in 2022 his twin boys in awe as he stands in front of them for the first time.
>> Are you walking?
>> I'm about to. What do you think?
>> Every time.
>> For me, that was it was a really special moment.
>> Now Derek has turned his pain into purpose, launching his own medical device company in the hopes of helping others. ABC News's Martha Ratitz tells stories like Derek's in her new book, The Hero Next Door, sharing over a dozen portraits of service men and women. I think what readers can take away from Derek Herrera's story is that you have one life and no matter what happens in it, you still find a reason not only to help yourself live each day, but to help other people. For more than 90 years, our sponsor, Navy Federal Credit Union, has provided financial support to the military veterans and their families. We have a little surprise for you. Inspired by your story, Navy Federal Credit Union is proud to donate $10,000 to the Marine Raider Foundation in honor of you. As a show of thanks for all that you've done for them, >> that's so incredible. I like thank you.
I can't thank Navy Federal enough for that because of the impact that it will have for the community.
>> My goodness, Derek is so inspiring. A hero to not only others but his children. And Martha Ratits will be here tomorrow telling us about her book, The Hero Next Door, which is available everywhere tomorrow.
>> Yeah, you can really see what that meant to him, that donation. Yeah, thank you, Leslie.
