Every "MGM" Cartoon Ranked from WORST to BEST (Part 5)Added:
Well, it has come to this. The end is nigh. The end is nigh, people. The end is very extremely nigh. In this final MGM video, I am going to be ranking them all. Every single solitary MGM cartoon.
All 418 of them from the bottom of the barrel to the cream of the crop. which, yes, I know is not as impressive as when I ranked every Looney Tunes cartoon, but really, if you think about it, that's MGM's fault for not being as productive as Warner Brothers.
>> I'm a victim of circumstance.
>> Okay, so real quick before we begin, if this is your first feray into my MGM series, well, I'm not sure why you selected part five as your introduction to this series, but I'm glad to have you anyway. But more importantly, this is not going to be the time and place where I get into the specifics of what I liked and didn't like about the cartoons. I have already spent hours and hours talking about these. I feel like I've said all I needed to about them. So, this is literally just the ranking.
Nothing too fancy or any of that highulutin analysis thing.
>> We we don't do that here. But of course, if you want to see the previous videos in this series leading up to this ranking, links will be provided below.
And if you want to know my thoughts about a specific cartoon that pops up in this video, the time span that each video covers will also be included to make it a little bit easier for you to find it. All right, I think that's everything. But before we get started, as always, a quick thank you to my patrons over on Patreon. And a special shout out to my newest patrons, George and Mate and ML. Thank you guys so much for your support. If you enjoy the content I make and would like to offer your support, then for as little as a dollar a month, you can get your name listed right here at the start of every video. And number one, Heavenly Puss.
And there you have it. This list is Vito. All 48 MGM cartoons ranked. But of course, this is just my personal opinion, and I'm just one guy. Let's see what the list might look like once we get more people involved. I asked you guys to vote on what your favorite and least favorite MGM cartoons were. And boy, you guys did not disappoint.
115 submissions. That is way more than I was expecting. I was totally blown away by the response. And after collating all the votes, here are the results. Let's start with the bottom of the rain barrel. Here are the bottom 10 worst MGM cartoons as voted for by you guys.
Number 10, Poor Little Me. Number nine, His Mouse Friday. Number eight, Bosow's Easter eggs. Number seven, Sorry Safari.
Number six, Little Gravel Voice. Number five, Cleaning House. Number four, Run Sheep Run. Number three, Shuddterbugged Cat. Number two, Down and Outing. And number one, High Stakes.
And real quick, here is your bottom 25 list. That's actually a pretty good list. Not a stinker among the group. Uh, what I mean is that this list is nothing but stinkers. Bad picks all around. But but you know the the good kind of bad.
Anyway, the point is this looks like a good solid list. With the exception of Carmen Get It, these are all cartoons I found to be subpar. Also, for once, we were in agreement as to what the worst OF SOMETHING IS.
>> WHAT DID WE JUST BECOME BEST FRIENDS?
>> YEP.
>> We both agreed that High Stakes was the worst MGM cartoon. And you guys absolutely did not sugarcoat it. It eclipsed the competition by a mile. It wasn't even close. And I do like how diverse the bottom 10 was specifically.
There were Jean Dich cartoons, a Captain and the Kids cartoon, a Tom and Jerry cartoon from the Chuck Jones era, a few from the Happy Harmonies era. There's even a Hannah Barbara Tom and Jerry cartoon in here. Basically, every era is represented here except for that of Tex Avery's cartoons. And I'll bet he feels really torn up that he got left out.
I'll have to remedy that situation in just a bit. Right now, we need to move on to what your guys's favorite MGM cartoons are. And so, here are your top 10 picks.
Number 10, Magical Maestro. Number nine, Who Killed Who? Number eight, T for Two.
Number seven, Dumbhounded.
Number six, Peace on Earth. Number five, Northwest Hounded Police. Number four, Heavenly Puss. Number three, Mouse Trouble. Number two, Red Hot Riding Hood. And number one, The Cat Concerto.
And just like with the worst, here is your top 25 list. And I actually have no complaints with this one. whatsoever.
Every single cartoon on this list earned at least a 9 out of 10 from me. In fact, every single cartoon in your top 10 got a 10 out of 10 from me, which can only mean one thing.
>> What it tells me is that your taste is getting better. Now, in terms of the absolute top picks, The Cat Conerto and Red Hot Riding Hood were actually pretty close in terms of points, but then there was a huge chasm that separated these two cartoons from the number three pick.
There were not that many top 10 lists that didn't have at least one of these cartoons on the list. So, it's clear that you guys generally saw these two cartoons as the cream of the crop. But honestly, this entire top 25 is just an awesome list. If you wanted to see the best of what MGM had to offer, you really can't go wrong with this list.
And real quick before I go, I do want to give out a handful of booby prizes. I want to honor a few cartoons that aren't flashy. They may not be the most memorable cartoons in the world, but they do deserve some recognition. Of the 418 eligible cartoons you guys could have voted for on either list, 299 were selected. Ah, so close.
>> So, that got me thinking. Of the 119 cartoons that weren't picked by any of the people that voted, which one was the best? And that was pretty easy to figure out. So, in my opinion, the best cartoon that got ignored by the voters is Triplet Trouble. But then on the flip side, you might be wondering, well, what's the worst cartoon that got ignored? Good question, rhetorical audience member in my head. So, my pick for the worst cartoon that got ignored was The Winning Ticket. Honestly, probably not that big of a surprise considering how forgettable that cartoon is. And like I said, I don't want to leave Tex Avery out of the conversation of worst MGM cartoons entirely. So, according to you guys, Tex Avery's worst MGM cartoon was Halfp Pint Pygmy. I personally think his worst is Farm of Tomorrow, but nobody asked me my opinion. And finally, certain mainstay MGM cartoon characters were absent from the top 25 altogether. So, let's quickly reveal what you guys thought were their best individual cartoon. Your favorite Flip the Frog cartoon was Room Runners.
Your favorite Willy Whopper cartoon was Stratosphere. And your favorite Barney Bear cartoon was Barney's Hungry Cousin.
All good picks, but make sure you don't forget Spooks and the Rookie Bear. Those are both good cartoons for Flip the Frog and Barney Bear, respectively. So, if you want to get into some of these lesserk known cartoon characters, any of these cartoons would be a good place to start. And with that, it is finished.
MGM is complete at last.
It always feels so good finishing one of these, like I've completed a long trek climbing up a mountain. And I actually feel a great sense of accomplishment. I feel like I've grown a lot ever since I did my Looney Tunes series. I think my reviews have gotten better, my editing has improved, and my sound quality, well, my writing and editing has improved, that's for sure. Now, this project was not easy for me to make. I will readily admit that. But I did finish it. And honestly, it's all because of you guys. I don't think this project would have ever existed at all if the response to these long cartoon reviews hadn't been so positive. And I am grateful beyond words for you guys.
Watching these old theatrical cartoons in order, watching them evolve and grow and discovering some classics that I hadn't seen before has been a delight.
And I hope these videos have, if nothing else, been informative, fun, and maybe convince you to check out some cartoons that you otherwise wouldn't have. But now, it's time to put MGM behind us.
People have been asking like crazy what my next big project is going to be. And I wish I could say that we're going straight into another of the classic theatrical cartoons, but I really think I need to do a breather project first to get back into the swing of things. and not a breather project like I did with Peanuts where it ended up not being a breather project at all. I'm talking about one that can actually be done pretty quickly. Maybe even all in the span of just one video. That' sure be nice. Let's see. Looking at some potential criteria.
Maybe it can be something that comes from a popular IP. And since it's been a running theme in the series so far, it could be something that I grew up with and I'm already familiar with. That way I can see how it withstood the test of time now that I'm an adult. But like I said, something that's limited in quantity so that the entire thing can be done in one video. I wonder if any such series of cartoons or specials exists.
I can never think on an empty stomach. I think I'm just going to have this nice hot plate of lasagna while I decide. Oh, I almost forgot. I better go grab a book to devour while I'm scarfing down this yummy, delicious Italian cuisine.
HEY, WHAT HAPPENED TO my lasagna?
Well, that's just great. Now, how am I supposed to conjure up something to review for next time? Well, there's more than one way to skin a cat, which I will do right after I return this razor to my antique weapons drawer. I guess I could just go take a nap and maybe something will come to me. And as soon as it comes to me, I'll be sure to let you guys know. And I guess that's it for now.
Thank you guys so much for watching and sticking with me through this insanely long and drawn out project. And once again, a special thank you to all of my beautiful patrons. You guys are amazing.
And if you want to be notified of when the next review series comes out, make sure that you're subscribed so that you don't miss it. And be sure to keep an eye out for future updates. You're definitely going to want to keep your eyes peeled for this one.
Have a good day and I'll see you next time.
