The Roman testudo, meaning 'tortoise,' was used in two distinct military contexts: as a battlefield formation where soldiers locked shields together to create a protective shell against missiles, and as protective coverings in siege warfare that sheltered soldiers and battering rams while attacking enemy fortifications.

The Roman Testudo Wasn’t Just a Shield Formation… #RomanHistory #AncientRome #TestudoAdded:
When you hear the word testudo, you probably think of this, the famous Roman battlefield formation where soldiers locked shields together to create protection from missiles. And that makes sense because testudo literally means tortoise. [music] Roman soldiers advancing beneath overlapping shields looking rather like a moving shell. But here's the interesting part. [music] The Romans also used the word testudo in siege warfare.
Protective coverings shielding soldiers, including structures sheltering battering rams as they attacked enemy walls, could also be called testudo.
Once again, the same idea appears, men advancing beneath a protective shell.
So to the Romans, testudo wasn't just one thing. It could mean a tortoise, a battlefield formation, or protective siege structures used in [music] attacking fortifications.
And if you'd like to discover more about Roman siege equipment, including the extraordinary machines that they used to break enemy defenses, well, I've recently made a full video on the subject, which you can find via the link below.
