He Freed America — Then Lost His Head

[00:00:00]America celebrates its independence every July 4th, but almost nobody talks about the country that actually paid for it and then lost everything because of it.

[00:00:08]In the 1770s, King Louis the 16th of France decided to fund the American Revolution, not because he loved freedom, but because he hated Britain and wanted revenge after France's humiliating defeat in the Seven Years' War. France spent over 1.6 billion livres fighting the British on America's behalf.

[00:00:24]Weapons, warships, soldiers, and loans.

[00:00:27]And by the end of the war in 1783, France had received nothing in return.

[00:00:31]No land, no trade deals, no repayment.

[00:00:33]The debt was so catastrophic that for the first time in the history of French absolutism, a king was forced to formally negotiate with his subjects just to avoid bankruptcy.

[00:00:42]Louis the 16th called the Estates-General, France's ancient representative assembly, desperately seeking new revenue. That single decision, calling the Estates-General, unwittingly sparked the French Revolution. The same king who freed America was found guilty of treason and guillotined on January 21st, 1793. His wife Marie Antoinette was guillotined 9 months later. Louis the 16th helped birth the world's most powerful democracy, and in return, democracy killed him.
