Here's Why You Don't Call 911 During a Routine Traffic Stop

[00:00:13]On September 29th in Orlando, officers stopped a car on John Young Parkway after their system showed the registered owner's license had been suspended. The Mercury had such dark window tint that they couldn't tell who was actually driving, but the Supreme Court ruled in 2020 that officers can assume it's the ARO. So they pulled the car over and went to investigate.

[00:00:43]>> While some officers might answer the woman's question in an effort to deescalate, it's perfectly normal not to, especially if the officer believes there's a strong chance it'll just lead to a debate about the infraction.

[00:00:56]>> Let me call 911. a lieutenant cuz I seen you behind me for a while.

[00:01:10]>> No, no, no. My license are not suspended. That's a lie. I've been seeing you. I would only be to pick my ma'am.

[00:05:26]>> Majority of the time, we're not going to take you to jail for a suspended license. We're either going to give you a summon or we're going to say, "Hey, listen. Go get this fixed." Okay. But when you start acting like that and start with you take it out. No, we're done talking because you don't want to listen to anything that I'm saying.

[00:05:43]>> I tried to explain to you multiple times. I had Hey, listen. My body came rolling. I said hang up multiple times.

[00:05:49]This is not an emergency. Okay. There is a crime for calling 911 when there is no emergency. I am a police. No. Ma'am, are you going to let me speak?

[00:06:03]>> Okay.

[00:06:11]After that was settled, an officer would inventory the car prior to it being towed. So, >> there's one HP laptop in the trunk, one ThinkPad laptop in the trunk, three half empty bottles of alcohol, and then miscellaneous clothing, paperwork, nothing else of value. Thank you, sir.

[00:06:28]>> The officer charged her with misuse of 911 and resisting without violence. The county court system removed the case from its records, so it's likely the charges were dropped in their entirety.

[00:06:39]Nevertheless, the woman's stranded friend remained stranded that day.
