A flood watch is issued when heavy rainfall (1.5-3 inches, with isolated 6-inch totals) is expected, creating life-threatening flooding conditions. The heaviest rainfall occurs north of the frontal boundary, which separates warmer (80s) from cooler (60s) temperatures. As the upper-level system approaches, it creates lift that causes precipitation. Residents should monitor weather warnings closely, as rain training (rainfall in the same areas repeatedly) can cause flash flooding. After the system passes, temperatures drop to the 60s, followed by a warming trend toward the 80s-90s as the weekend approaches.

Flood Watch in effect Thursday night into Friday evening | KENS 5 Weather Impact ForecastAñadido:
Hello, welcome back. I am Paul Morrellas. Okay, we've got a rain event that's taking shape overnight tonight and into tomorrow. Matter fact, the National Weather Service has just issued a flood watch. Goes into effect 9:00 tonight, runs all the way through 9:00 tomorrow night for the counties in green. I think about an inch and a half to 3 inches of rain definitely possible with some isolated 6-in rainfall totals and in some areas this could be a life-threatening situation. Uh just depends on where that heavy rain sets up. Right now, the uh heaviest rainfall appears to be uh just north of the frontal boundary. The frontal boundary is something like that. I'll show you that here just a second. But in a swath from northern Bear County through Comal, Guadalupe counties and to the east, those are the areas that could easily pick up over 3 inches. But you can see this is going to be a widespread event with some pretty heavy totals overnight tonight and into tomorrow. All right, outside right now we've got cloudy skies. Temperature is 68. The low this morning was 62. One thing that was interesting if you stepped outside this morning, you're like, "Whoa, it's a little cooler than normal." Actually, because we've been so warm lately, it felt cooler than normal, but we were right where we should be, right at 62.
Record high today is 96 set back in 1940. Okay, here's what you can expect for the rest of the afternoon. I'm expecting just cloud cover for the most part. Maybe a 20% chance of a shower.
Temperatures, I I think I may have overdone it this morning. We may not hit 78. I think somewhere mid upper 70s, that'll be the high. And then this evening, temperatures in the upper 60s to lower 70s. And rain starts somewhere around 8, 9, 10:00 this evening. All right, already starting to see some showers and thunderstorms just to the north of the viewing area. Temperature right now, 68°. Hondo's at 71. Gonzales 69. Down to the south, temperatures are in the 70s. The where this frontal boundary is, it's going to make all the difference in the world. Right now it's separating temperatures in the 80s to the south of it. 60s to the north of it.
And if this front stays right where it's at, we are going to be in the zone for some heavy rainfall as the upper-level system approaches. If that frontal boundary rises to the north, then that zone of heavier rainfall will also move to the north with it. Here's the upper-level system that I'm talking about. That's what's going to cause all the lift and cause all the rain tonight and into tomorrow. Once that system passes by, you're going to love this weekend. The weekend is going to be great. Okay, now a few of these thunderstorms will have some hail and also some gusty winds. I don't think the severe weather threat is the primary threat, but definitely some of the storms could have some hail. All right, so this is the way it comes together.
Temperatures this afternoon, mid to upper 70s. And then the rain starts somewhere around 9:00, 8:00 tonight. And then we'll have off and on showers and storms maybe for a good portion of the night tonight. And in some areas there may be some small hail. In the morning, chances for rain. And then as the main system kicks in, I think some of those thunderstorms could have some hail and some gusty winds as well. And then once the whole system passes through, then the sun comes out. Primarily in the yellow, that's your biggest threat for some localized flooding rainfall. And again, this is could be a life-threatening situation. It's one of those nights and into tomorrow that you really want to pay attention cuz there could be some training in the same areas of rainfall kind of over and over again.
All right, molds are light. Oak is light. Pecan is light. Grass is also light as you would imagine. The pollen count's pretty light. Okay, tonight and into tomorrow we've got a KENS 5 Weather Impact Alert. And that's because of the threat for heavy rain. I think that rain chance is near 100%. Temperatures tomorrow will be in the 60s all day long. Some of the storms again could have some hail and some very heavy rains. And that's why we've got that flood watch that is in effect. Once the system kicks through as we head into the weekend, you're going to love it. It's going to be really nice. Now the mornings will be chilly. If you've got a soccer game or if you've got some uh some kind of some kind of place you need to be in the morning, you're going to need a jacket. It's going to be chilly.
Matter of fact, in the hill country I think those low temperatures are going to be in the 40s both Saturday and Sunday morning. Maybe even as low as 41, 42 wind chill up around Kerrville and Fredericksburg. So the mornings both Saturday and Sunday very chilly.
Afternoons will be in the 70s, 73 on Saturday, 77 on Sunday. So good-looking weekend. Monday, high temperature right around 83. And then Tuesday, about 89.
We warm up close to 90. Upper 80s for Tuesday and Wednesday. 20% chance of a thunderstorm in advance of the next frontal boundary. And I think that front comes through, drops temperatures a little bit on Thursday the 7th. And then we may have kind of the same situation.
Maybe not flooding, but a good chance of some scattered thunderstorms again on the 8th and the 9th. Going to be close it looks like to Mother's Day. But at this point I think Mother's Day is going to be all right. Partly cloudy skies, high temperatures in the upper 80s. And then as we head into the 11th, the 12th, and the 13th, temperatures warm right back up again. So to just kind of sum up again, we do have a flash flood watch that is in effect from 9:00 tonight all the way through 9:00 tomorrow evening.
Some of the rain could be heavy and it's going to be one of those overnight periods [music] that you really want to pay attention. Keep it here on KENS 5.
Make sure you get those warnings cuz there will be some flood warnings I'm pretty sure that'll [music] be issued.
Rainfall amounts again anywhere from an inch and a half to about 3 inches with some isolated 6-in rainfall amounts. And that's a near 100% chance [music] of rain. So we'll be paying attention and watching that very, very closely tonight and into tomorrow. Okay, we've got more news [music] coming up after the break.
