Effective closet organization requires emptying all items, categorizing belongings by function and frequency of use, and strategically placing items based on accessibility needs; for example, everyday items should be stored in easily accessible locations while seasonal or infrequently used items can be placed in less accessible areas, and items like shoes benefit from dedicated storage solutions such as shoe racks.

organizing every closet in my nyc apartment ✨ a cozy, productive declutterAdded:
So, you're probably wondering how we got here. It looks like every single one of my closets threw up and landed in my living room. And that's actually exactly what's happened. Today, I am doing one of the biggest closet organizations I have ever done in any of my apartments.
Mostly because of the fact that I have the most closets I've ever had in any of my apartments in this current one. So, today, almost a year after moving into this apartment, I am finally getting down to business and organizing my closets. So, I no longer have to worry about it and my apartment no longer feels super cluttered. Wish me luck.
So, right now I'm in the thick of it.
You can probably tell. I have things all around me. I have furniture pieces. I have sets of drawers. You know, I I'm seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, but I just don't know how I've collected this much stuff. I think moving four times in four years has really made me buy so many different organizational pieces and pieces of furniture. I've just acquired a lot of things. So, now that I've actually found an apartment that I want to be in longterm, I just resigned my lease. I am really getting down to it and trying to get rid of all the clutter and organizing all of my closets in a way that is super functional to me and I can actually find what I'm looking for on a daily basis because right now that's not really happening. If you're new here, my name's Alexis. I'm 28. I live in New York. And at the beginning of this year, I turned my second bedroom in my apartment into a walk-in closet. It was previously an office. that worked okay for me, but it just didn't feel the right vibe for this apartment. So, ever since I created this walk-in closet, my life has been changed. It has made this apartment feel so much more like my own space, and it's made it way more organized. But, um, after making that walk-in closet, I kind of have neglected my real closets. So, that's kind of how we ended up where we are today. I have three closets in this apartment. I have one in the hallway, one in my bedroom, and then one in the closet of my walk-in closet. They are currently all filled to the brim with I don't even know what.
Let's go back to the beginning of today and start from the beginning because there's a lot of work to be done and I could not do this alone, so I had to call in some help.
>> Hi.
>> Hi, kitties. I didn't take anything out of my closets. Oh, good. It's Emily.
She's the special guest.
>> Oh my gosh. Hi, everybody. Um, this project is daunting. I have been putting this off for probably 6 months at this point and that's why I had to call in the big guns.
me, Emily, ready to help.
>> Uh-huh. Emily is organizer extraordinaire. She is really, really good at organizing anything. Like, you really are.
>> That's so nice.
>> If you guys remember 3 years ago when I had to get my apartment fumigated, I had to take apart my entire apartment and then put it all back together. Emily was there by my side. And when we put it back together, it looked better than it ever had ever. She did cord management.
She had organizational systems.
Everything was perfect. So, I had to call in a professional. Ever since I moved all of my clothes and created a walk-in closet in my second bedroom, I have just had chaos and clutter in every single closet because they no longer are for clothes. But I still somehow have acquired so many random various items throughout my four apartments I've lived in over the past 4 years. Hopefully after today, I will never feel cluttered again.
It's high hopes. Fingers crossed. Pretty high hopes. We're just going to start by taking everything out of the closets so Emily can see what she's working with.
Cuz also I just know the way I have things in my closets right now probably makes no sense. You're going to look at what's in these closets and be like why the hell would you do it that way?
>> So I guess there's nothing else to do but start.
>> So should we take >> Sorry. Emily said should we take everything out? But I wasn't filming yet. So I was trying to have her recreate the moment.
>> She said with feeling.
>> With feeling.
>> Okay. Go back. I'll try again.
>> Okay. Okay. Ready?
>> So should we take everything out?
>> Yeah.
>> You think? Well, so should we take out my coats, too? Yes. I think we should take everything out.
>> Okay. Everything. Everything.
>> I had this for a couple months.
>> Oh my goodness.
>> Should we just each grab stuff or do you want to like convey your belt to me?
>> Yeah, the shoes are kind of insane.
>> That's why I got a shoe rack. And don't you feel like it makes sense to put it in my closet? So, >> yeah. To be honest, what from first thought, putting it the shoe rack in that little closet, I feel like freaking chaotic. Hi, Wonderful. Wrong with it.
>> Um, wait.
>> I feel like the stuff up there is good.
Yeah. Where do we want to put your shoes?
>> Throw them all in here.
>> Yeah, let's just throw them all in here.
Trying to think maybe if you wanted to do like your casual shoes like everyday shoes in here and then make do your fancy shoes in there.
>> Yeah. You know that would makeense because like when you're on the go, you're not going to want to go all the way in there and then go out.
>> Yeah. I heard we're talking about shoes, which is the perfect opportunity for me to tell you that this video is sponsored by CBS. You guys know I do a lot of walking around the city. I don't have a car obviously, so I take public transportation or the good old heel toe express. So, I am always looking for a very comfortable shoe to get me around the city. But besides being comfortable, I also always want to make sure they're fashionable, they're sleek. I'm always looking for a new type of shoe that I can wear that will go with a ton of my outfits, but it's not going to leave me in pain by the end of the night. So, that's where CVS comes in. They make a full range of footwear from sneakers to boots to mules to slip-ons. Every single one of them has the same sneaker level comfort. So, there is a shoe for every occasion of your life. You know, I love a sneaker, but I was thinking about it recently and I was like, "Wow, I don't really have any fun colored sneakers, especially for summer. I feel like summer is the time to bust out your fun sneaks." So, when I saw these green acorn trainers, I just knew I had to have them. They're '90s inspired.
They're lightweight. I love that there's a bit of added height in them. I love a chunkier sneaker um that has a little bit more height to it. And this doesn't just come in green. It comes in over 10 colors. And it has memory foam inside.
It's super breathable. And then my other favorite CV shoe is the Carlilele. It's a velvet Mary Jane. Once again, I'm trying to add a pop of color to my shoe collection. This is a great alternative to a sneaker if I have an outfit that I want to be a little more elevated, but maybe I don't want to wear heels.
Recently, I have been doing a lot of days where I'll leave at like 1:00 p.m., but I'll stay out until 10 or 11:00 at night. So, I need an outfit that transitions seamlessly from daytime to nighttime. I don't want to be in a sneaker at night, but I don't want to be in a heel during the day. Boom. This is the perfect shoe. And not only are they just a fun color and really cute, they also have a supportive arch and a cushioned footed. I recently have been trying to incorporate a bit more color into my wardrobe. Sometimes I'm just lacking. And I feel like shoes are the perfect place to start because it makes your outfit look a little more intentional. You look a little more put together when you have a fun or a bold shoe choice. And I am just so excited to wear these because I'm able to have the bold shoe choice but still have the comfort. So if you want to try see these for yourself, I have a code for you guys. It's Alexis 15 for 15% off your first order. You can just head to the link in the description or scan the QR code. And I want to thank CVS again for sponsoring this video.
Okay, so here's what's going on in the closet. Currently, I have this unit that's been with me for years that I keep makeshifting into different purposes. And then we have this shoe rack that's been with me for even more years. We're thinking of switching the two. The thing is, I bought a shoe rack for the closet in my walk-in closet, but it's not going to fit all my shoes. We just realized I have a lot of shoes.
We're thinking maybe my everyday sneakers, more casual shoes we leave in this front closet, and we put my nicer shoes in the walk-in closet. Closet. So, we're going to try switching these and see if that works.
Oh, very nice.
>> Does it need to be vacuumed in there? I was going to say, do you want to do like a quick sweep or please?
You can close it, but you would only be able to open this to there. So, >> I mean, that's not bad at all.
>> No, I don't think so.
>> I don't hate this.
>> Yeah, this makes sense. And this gives you a little bit more.
>> Yeah.
So, do you want to build your shoe rack and I'll get all the what I think would be your daily shoes?
>> Mhm.
>> Nervous the shoe rack wasn't going to come cuz it was supposed to be delivered yesterday and it never came. I had no tracking information on it and then literally 5 minutes before Emily showed up, it got delivered. So, I'm going to build this shoe rack that we're going to put in the dressing room closet. Um, and hopefully I can build it fairly quickly.
Okay, I really need to lock in and realize I'm building furniture right now. That part of my brain's not activated.
All right. Looking a bit scary in the hall, but Emily has worked her magic on these organizers.
So, we have my casual shoes here.
Looking great. And this makes so much more sense having this here instead of on the other side because now it's like opened up. And then we have a cat closet. So, she organized all their food and treats and litter uh brushes. Wow, this looks really good. Thank you.
Thanks, M. You're welcome. That's great.
All right, I built the shoe rack. Uh here it is. That honestly I built in pretty record time. So, we're going to put this in the I guess this is taller that I'm This is the tallest me. It's not terrible in here.
>> Yeah, I guess. Let's just start taking things out.
>> Yeah.
>> The fact that this is not up against a wall is really crazy for me to me.
>> Well, these aren't going to So, let me take these out because >> I also am going to do some stuff with these. So, there's some mirrors in here, so we got to be careful.
>> Oh, cute. Oh my god. I remember getting that with you. I feel like that'd be cute on like my gallery wall.
>> Yeah. Oh, maybe I should move all of these pictures just out here.
>> I honestly feel like I should stop storing my pictures in my closets because it will force me to just put them up or get rid of them.
>> And there should be like a black round.
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, I remember getting this with you, too.
>> I know. I want to put this in my hallway, but I kind of want wallpaper behind the >> box and then put this up.
>> Oh, this is a cute little p flower picture.
Where do I store my beach chair? Okay.
How did you store all this stuff before you moved? Like in our last apartment?
>> Yeah. Where did it go?
>> I don't know.
>> Got some craft stuff in here.
>> I feel like this could be out like out there maybe.
I got I got it. I don't want to hit you in the head.
Okay.
All right. That's that side.
And this side is this suitcase.
This suitcase.
>> Well, I feel like those should just stay up there. No. Or do you want to get one down for now?
>> Yeah, I guess they can just stay up here. Let me just move this out of the way.
>> Um, do you want to pass me the chair thing? Oh, it's right here.
>> You got it?
>> Yeah.
>> I'm also like this green pillow. Pass me that. I don't really want to get rid of it, but I don't know what to do with it.
>> That's not bad. You just did this a little too tight compared to There's something on there.
>> It's really cute, though.
>> It's really big.
>> No, it looked weird on my head, but it was a good It was a good project. Okay, so I took this out of my walk-in closet closet. I've had this since my last apartment, and it's just like IKEA bins.
I'm going to see if maybe they fit in this closet.
We have both of the organizational things in the closet now. We went through it. I'm feel I'm feeling good about this. I think this is like a much better setup to just have like before it was just like scary things on the ground in this closet. This was a very scary one. So, what I did in here, >> blankets. Blankets.
>> And then the blanket that you use every day is right there. Oh, that's so smart.
That's such a good spot to put it. If you guys remember, I have shelves built into the inside of this closet in my room, and Emily organized them. So, she put my towels here, dish towels there, my acupressure mat, um, and then my blankets down here. That is perfect.
Is this a ukulele?
>> Yeah, you know, when I'm always playing the uke.
>> Yeah, of course. You know what you could use that for? Putting all these Oh, I don't know if it would fit. I feel like they're too big.
Does this feel like lowkey a waste of space? I can't tell. Let me see. I mean, you're going to have to put them somewhere anyway.
>> Yeah, >> I think it's better to take them out of the plastic.
>> So, if you guys remember the Hi. Sorry.
>> Sorry you didn't see them there. Um, wait. No, no. I'm going to talk about this. Okay. No, no, you can you can be here. Um, if you guys remember my last apartment, um, that I lived with Emily, I had this on the back of my door and it's just been in storage. And we got the great idea, and by we, I mean Emily, we got the great idea that we should put this on the back of a door in my closet.
Closet. Um, because I need a little more storage in here, unfortunately. You want to look at the shoe rack? See, I got the topic. Yes. So, here's this shoe storage rack that I just built. And my guitar fits perfectly behind. Um, so we're going to figure out Emily's a bit skeptical that the shoes are going to actually fit on this rack.
We're going to figure it out.
>> You know what? I just had an idea because in the picture it looked like the tall boots was going to go down there. There's no way they could go down there. So, maybe put the tall boots up there. I'm feeling a little bit more optimistic.
>> Uh-huh.
My shoe closet. So, all of my heels and boots are in here. I think it looks beautiful. Nice work. Thank you. It's like wires up there, too. So it might get caught on it.
>> Yeah.
>> These are my hats and scarves that we're putting up here.
>> Yeah, I think that's fine up there.
Right.
>> Is Can you hold my hands?
>> Yeah.
>> Ooh. Ooh.
>> Did you hear all those so graceful?
>> Emily left. She was such a big help getting this place organized. Now, I still have a handful of work to do and a lot of stuff to do in my walk-in closet.
I also want to switch my spring and winter clothes. Ideally fit them all.
Let me show you this closet. Still trying to find a place for this dryer. I know, I know. I never use it and then I'm like, uh, there's nowhere to put the dryer, it's so annoying, but I just know that the second I get rid of it, I'm going to need it for something. And it's like a very nice, expensive product, and I just I don't want to just get rid of it. So, I just need to find a place for it. In here, we have the two little organizational units. I have my backpack and my duffel bag right here that I take with me a lot whenever I travel. I'll either take my backpack or the carry-on type bag, just depending what the trip is. In here, I have like all of my paperwork. I have any sheet music. This is my New York Times article I was in.
Just like anything paper and important.
I have the cat's big carrier right here.
Technically, it can be collapsed, but I just want to have it built at all times in case there's some sort of emergency where I need to throw both the cats in there and leave. And in here, I have like umbrellas and packing things like packing cubes. This is extra electronics. I have like my mic, things like that in here. This is journals, notepads, envelopes, paper. And this is just where I throw my extra like skincare, PR products, things like that.
I think I already showed you this, but she did like a linens type cabinet right here with all my towels, extra blankets.
Down here is my bag with my dance shoes, my ukulele, and my tripod are back there. This is craft corner. Up here, it's all my yarn. The infamous blanket is right here in this bin. I have my ring light, my tool kit, and that is like a miscellaneous bin with a few things in it. I am very, very happy with how this is looking, and it's just so much more functional. Now, to make all that room, I did take out all of these prints. They used to live in that closet. We're getting down to business this week, and I'm figuring out what prints are staying and what prints are going because I'm sick of just storing a ton of picture frames in my closet. She added the coats and jackets back in here. So, it does make you can't really see as much of our work we did, but the cat cabinets right here and my shoes are right here. These are like my casual sneakers, more everyday shoes. And then you saw the other ones were in the closet. I have more coats right here. If you watched me like 3 years ago, I literally owned like three coats. It's really insane how many I have now. I really overcompensated. Then, I do buy my paper towels and toilet paper in bulk. I love what Emily did here because she turned this container on its side and took these out of the plastic so I can just grab paper towel or toilet paper and then I have extras right here.
I used to have my decorations in one bin and it was kind of scary. Um, so we separated it into Christmas and every other season. I have an extra feeder and water fountain right here. I have my Bissell up there, my Christmas tree that I'm still trying to decide if I should get rid of cuz I didn't put it up this year. It's honestly all coming together pretty nicely and it's feeling a bit easier than I expected it to be. Like oddly easier. I was expecting this to kind of be a nightmare and make me question my sanity. But Emily is a miracle worker with these things. My walk-in closet needs some help. It needs some work. So, I think we need to go there. Especially because I put the over the-do storage on. I need to fill that up and kind of re situate a bit of the closet. And I want to take out my spring and summer clothes. Bennett. He's scratching at all these boxes in here.
I'm going to be so for real. I put on the same outfit I was wearing yesterday and was going to just be like, "Yep, it's the same day, everybody. Now I'm doing my closet, but then I was like, why would I lie to you guys? It's the next day." After Emily left yesterday, I was just feeling so tired. I spent the whole weekend editing a really big video and kind of some of while Emily was here, I was doing it. And after she went home, I was thinking about organizing this closet, and I was just so tired and felt like I couldn't do it to the best of my ability. So, I decided to go to sleep. And now it's the next day. We are finishing my big closet organization because the closet organization is not complete without dealing with the actual chaos of the walk-in closet. Now, I know it looks like a mess in here right now.
It's because I'm going to redo my living room tomorrow. And I'm just acrewing boxes of things for the living room. So, I think step one is to move all of these boxes I've been storing in here into the living room so I can have a better workspace. I have my suitcase down here of my spring clothes and just get into it. I kind of want to rearrange what I'm storing where because I want to make room for my spring clothes. And ideally, I'm going to be able to make room for all of my clothes in this closet so I don't have to switch over spring and winter clothes. They can all just exist in my closet. Let's start by moving some things out of here.
Okay. So, there is a bit going on behind me right here. We're just going to ignore that for now. What I want to do first is figure out what I'm putting in this organizational unit I have on the back of my door right now. All my socks and underwear are in here. And we all could have called this. I hate it. It's disastrous. It's just pretty small. It's hard to get into. I think I want to do socks for sure in here. I just I have so many socks and I think I can separate my socks into two separate type piles. Now, in my last apartment, the cats did enjoy trying to sleep in this. I'm hoping that's not going to be the case. It was mostly olives that would climb it and she was so little at the time. It was easy. But I feel like she's not small enough to do that anymore.
Okay, so now I have this bin opened up.
I'm going to maybe put my bathing suits in here. That feels since like summer's coming, I kind of want to take them down from up at the top of my closet and put them in this bit. Honestly, I'm just going to take down all this is pajamas and bathing suits up here. I'm just taking all of this down right now.
And while I'm up here, let me fix what's going on right here.
Honestly, everything that's on top of here is going to get rearranged cuz like my t-shirts are here. And now that it's getting warmer, I feel like I don't need as many sweatshirts and sweaters and my t-shirts can come down. I'm going to fill this up with all of my cover-ups, bathing suits, And to make my pajamas a bit more accessible, I'm like, can I fit them all just in this top right here?
That should work. I know this isn't the most like aesthetic looking thing. I could print out like fun pieces of paper to block like seeing what's inside. I think it's I'm going to deem this good enough. Somewhat of a mess down here.
This I can move out of here. This is like a really cozy big hoodie. Uh that's also a blanket. I have my hats down here, but I want to see if I can also fit this bin.
Yeah, cuz I don't grab for my hats like all the time. So, that'll be fine. I think I should open up this suitcase and see what's going on in here. Oh boy, I put a lot of stuff in here.
Okay. And a handful of things in here are just like memories. They're t-shirts and sweatshirts from just things in my life that I don't want to get rid of that I need to figure out if I want to make like a blanket out of them or how I want to store them or even things like I don't know. Like I have a sweatshirt from college from when I was on the dance team that I'm not really going to wear that dayto-day right now. But I'm like, "What if I have a kid one day and when they're like 16, they're looking through my stuff and they're like, "This is such a fun sweatshirt." Because like I did that with my mom. Like she had all these sweatshirts she kept from college that I would like to take and wear and stuff. So I always just keep them just because I feel like I'll I'll want them in my future. So we're going to attempt to not put any winter clothes in here and have this just be. We have to do a big reorganization of this because there's a bit going on, I guess. Let's go through one at a time.
So, before I had my shorts and skirts in here, and I feel like my main ones that I like to look at are like here and here where I currently have my jeans. But, as we get into summer, I'm going to be wearing less jeans, more shorts. So, I think I'm going to put my jeans down here, and I'm going to consolidate it into one, what is this called? Cubby.
Now, I do kind of really need to get rid of some jeans because I have a lot of jeans and I don't really love a lot of them, but I have a very hard time partying with jeans. So, my light wash jeans time to shine as we get closer to summer. I think I need to get rid of these pants.
All right, I'm putting in my jeans like this because also my cats love laying in this shelf specifically. And I'm hoping if I have them up like this, they can't get in.
My shorts. Then in here, I'm putting my shorts and skirts.
Oh, you're so cute. I think I just got to pull all of these out to the ground.
I think my bulky sweaters are good to be put away up top. And like a few of my lighter sweaters, like this I'll keep down because it's still like it's like 49 today. Like this would be a good spring sweater to wear. So I guess I'll just set aside any of my spring sweaters.
I think t-shirts will be in this cubby.
And now I think behind my t-shirts, I have my long sleeve t-shirts back here.
And then I think I'm going to put my more spring leaning sweaters back here, too.
Trying to decide if this should just be sweatshirts again, but more summer leaning sweatshirts.
All right, I'm going to put my sweaters up here. I just threw them all in this cubby so I can reach them.
All right. Now, I'm dividing my sweatshirts up in between with ones that seem more like winter, fall, and ones that seem more like I would wear them in the spring and summer. Okay, I have those split up. But before I organize them, I need to I just got hit. I need to look around and see if I want them in these. Like I had my sweatshirts before, if I want my sweatshirts up in here. I have a lot of like long skirts. Should those be hung up? Let me hang those up first. Let Let's see what's going on right here.
These are all like dresses, some nicer pants, some skirts. Think I have these two long skirts, but I feel like these go on a hanger.
These are all very much winter. I feel like I can fold these up and put them somewhere else. Anything else that is very much winter?
All right, I'll set these to the side for now until I decide where I want to put these. And this frees up a few hangers for me, too.
Honestly, it's funny. I like have not really looked at this part of my closet since I made it because I did this closet in January and pretty much everything in here is like spring and summer dresses.
Okay, now I'm taking a peek in my drawers over here, seeing what fits where.
Okay, I cleaned off this area and now I think I want to do the sweatshirts.
All right, I would say these look pretty good. And now I have these two whole cabinets open up at the top. So I think I'm going to put my winter dresses and pants and stuff that I don't feel like I need down here.
Okay, now I have like a whole empty shelf up here.
All right. All done. This looks amazing.
Have all my dresses, skirts, and nice pants here. Sweatshirts, sweatshirts, t-shirts, jean shorts, jean skirts, jeans, bathing suits, and cover-ups. Olive's about to jump. You can do it, girl.
Nice.
This is cleared off, so it's just my jewelry box now. And I have like a little jar in my mini jewelry box.
Olive, you're kind of in the way. All of my like nicer tanks, shirts. I have like my linen shirt, my jean shirts, sweaters are up top. This is completely empty right here. So, I'm trying to figure out what I might want to put there. Can't remember. Did I film this? Me and Emily put my scarves and hats up here on top of my closet. Not the prettiest. I actually feel like I should push down the scarf right there because it's sticking out. I don't know. I'm going to see how functional this feels and maybe I'll want to spread something out and put something up there. Honestly, this is bothering me up here. Let me fix this. I don't know. It's just a little unorganized looking.
And I guess I'll put my Versace bag in box right here. I know I could just get rid of them, but I don't own any like fun designer boxes like this, so it's kind of fun and pretty. Maybe I should push these to the corner. I do have my pit bull pillow up here. Feel like there's a better place for this. This doesn't need to be in my dressing room.
My pageino is in the mirror. I feel like I should keep this up for spring.
Yeah, that's much better. And this mirror is going to be mounted tomorrow, I think. So, that will also free up the space a little bit. Having this not sticking out. I love this dressing room.
This is the best idea I've ever had.
This is done. Yeah, I need to decide if I want to put things in it to make it a little cuter cuz it's not the most pretty in the entire world. But I have pajamas, underwear, socks, socks, and then laundry bags, and more socks cuz I just wear so many socks. And then the closet. All of my shoes are in here.
Very clean, orderly. You can't see it, but my guitar is behind here. And that's perfect because I never know where to store my guitar. Um, and then up there, I have my cooler for the park. And then a bag of extra tote bags. It just makes sense because this closet's kind of hidden behind a door and it's kind of skinny. I just never found myself going in there. I think storing all of my nicer shoes, that is just the perfect spot to do it. So, everyone say thank you, Emily, for helping me because I could not have done this without her. I know she did a handful that like wasn't on camera when I was filming, but the girl works fast. She I'm telling you, she's a miracle worker. Um, she is just so good at staring at a space and knowing exactly what to do with it. And that is something I'm still learning and I'm really happy that I have a lot of friends that can help me out in that process. So, all my closets are organized. I've gotten rid of a lot of clutter. And this finally means that I have the space, the energy, and my apartment is ready for me to redo my living room. So, in the next video, expect that. I have a lot of things I'm going to be doing tonight and tomorrow.
And I really hope you guys like it. I I'm very excited with my decisions that I've made and things I've picked. So, that's everything. So, I think I showed you every closet. I'm feeling really good about it. Thank you so much for watching. And as always, if you haven't yet, please subscribe to my channel.
Give this video a thumbs up. And I'll talk to you in the next video. Bye.
