Authenticity and outspokenness are essential qualities for effective political leadership, as demonstrated by Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, who emphasizes that people want politicians who are real and unapologetic. As the 55th Black woman elected to the US House, Crockett carries the weight of historical figures like Shirley Chisholm and Barbara Jordan while serving as a role model for future generations. She explains that public servants must balance their personal lives with their responsibilities, often prioritizing their public service over personal relationships. Crockett also discusses her plans to support other candidates and educate people about their political power, emphasizing that representation matters and that building teams of people at every level of government is crucial for meaningful change.

Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett on Standing Up and What’s NextAdded:
AVENUE LADY. LADY, I got to tell you, Jasmine, we love you, Jasmine. When I think of a congresswoman, I didn't I didn't picture somebody young and fly like you. I mean, like, look at all these.
I never pictured I just never pictured a congresswoman looking like you fly funky fresh just do you realize that you're changing how people think about politicians?
>> I I a little bit uh I don't know if it's so much my attire but definitely the way that I step into Congress and the way that I conduct myself overall.
>> Yes, for sure.
>> Absolutely. Just I mean and I and and and I love when I watch you anything you do I watch you. Do you do you like you and you're always you're real, you're outspoken, you're unapologetic. Have you always been like that?
>> I have. Uh as my parents sit there, they can tell you.
>> I see your parents in the audience right here.
>> Yeah.
>> Daddy and mama.
>> Yeah. I've I've always spoken my mind um and been very like honest in how I conduct myself. And frankly, right now in politics, people want more people that are going to be real.
>> Yes.
>> ABSOLUTELY.
>> YOU GOT to tell me though, Jasmine, because I know on my report card, it used to be Sherry is a class clown. She talks too much. What was on your report card?
>> Okay. So, it did not say that I was a class clown.
>> Okay.
>> But I got in trouble FOR TALKING ALL THE TIME. YES, I did. Um, but you know, I was top of my class, >> whether it was through elementary or law school. I was always at the top. So, I was talking, but I was getting it done, >> RIGHT?
>> BUT DID YOU? It's so funny cuz I think I talked too much, too. And I always had to have the last word with my mama until I woke up three days later one time.
>> When you were talking to your mother and your father, did you always have to have the last word, Jasmine?
>> I tried.
I tried. I I was good for But mom. But mom, >> yes, >> I was very good for that. And she wasn't really trying to hear me.
>> She wasn't trying to hear that. Oh my gosh. It like it so watching you is so inspirational to watch you, Jasmine, especially being a black woman, being a black woman today, you know, what does it mean for you to be a black woman in spaces where typically we weren't allowed and where you don't shrink? You do not shrink for anybody. So, what is that a lot of pressure going in there? What's it feel like to you?
>> It is. It's a lot of pressure. Um, I recognize that being only the 55th black woman ever elected to the US House.
>> Wow.
>> That I carry >> Yeah.
>> That's good and bad, right? Like, >> seriously, there should have been so many more of us. But I carry the weight of the Shirley Chisums and the Barbara Jordans when I walk into that space because >> they are the ones that open those doors of opportunity for me. But at the same time, in fact, on my way here this morning, I was looking at my email and I had an invitation to a high school graduation.
>> Yeah.
>> In Greenville, Texas.
>> Um, and so here it is. This kiddo said that, you know, this is somebody who went and volunteered at the polls simply because they really are so encouraged by my journey and told me, I am going to go into politics and most of it is because of you. can you come to my high school graduation? I'm like, now I don't even know this child, you know, but but I I I look at the fact that so many young people are looking at me and I know that it's not just me when I walk into that room. I'm walking in with the weight of those that came before me, but also understanding that I've got to do everything that I can for those coming behind me.
>> Absolutely. We feel the same way in this position that we're in. And representation does matter because I know I thought talk show when I saw Oprah Winfrey. She looked like my cousin. Now you know now looking at you I think con I think MY NEXT I AIN'T GOT A SHOW. I MIGHT WANT TO RUN AT YOU JASMINE.
>> Come on >> because the and I remember one of the the first times I saw you. You went viral. You went viral. You will read a person like nobody's business in in the congressional hearings.
I mean YOU LET ME TELL YOU LET ME TELL YOU I WAS FRONT SEAT when you said beach blonde bad bill butch body when I tell you YOU WAS THE QUEEN KILLER BE THE WAY YOU read even Cardi Beach would be proud of you you said it and I stood up I said where I get TICKETS TO THIS CONCERT right I know you you are very well verssed in the law. You know exactly what you're talking about. But when things happen like this that you don't expect, are you just prepared for it? It's just just where does that voice come from?
Jasmine, >> there there's no preparation for that.
Um but you know, I'm a black woman in America. So I mean, you know, I mean, some people are just like, "Oh, but you're a congresswoman.
I'm a black woman first." M >> uh and so you know the level of disrespect that is continuously lobbed against us as black women um you know for me I'm like wait a minute now I am one of the 535 most powerful um people in this country and for some reason you think we on the same level but you going to disrespect me like it's not going to happen like >> not going to happen >> not going to happen so >> do you you don't you don't have a you don't have a chip on your shoulder, but do just sometimes do you walk in those spaces and you have to say to yourself, "It's not today." You know, sometimes we got to go and go, "Not today."
>> I feel like it's every day, child. Uh, >> you know, it's it's a really really tough time right now for so many people.
And it's not just in this country, it's around the world. And, um, I am always so inspired. I mean, I don't get to read all of my messages, but I get messages from across the world and they are all looking at America and saying, "What is happening to her?"
>> Right?
>> And so, when I walk in, I walk in with a confidence of knowing that Texas 30 sent me to the Congress, not to shrink, but to make sure that I speak up, not only for those in Texas 30, not only for those in this country, but for those in this world. And um I I really take that very seriously. So when I walk in, I walk in prepared, but as a trained trial attorney, I can pivot at any moment. So when they when they do their thing, you ready? I'm ready.
Jasmine, man, you know, I love this.
You're very outspoken. You're outspoken person, but you're very private about your private life. We we never hear too much about that.
>> So I I do I like Not today, Sherry. Not today. Um, but I will ask you this. What What does a guy have to do to get your attention?
Jasmine Crockett.
>> Yeah. He got to get past security.
>> Yes.
>> Uh, you know, no, I I'll tell you this.
Um, I think that God number one has a purpose on all of our lives.
>> Yes.
>> And I don't think that I would be in Congress if I had gotten married and had kids. That doesn't say that married people with kids can't be in Congress, but I think for my particular journey and so um I will say that I'm trusting his timing.
>> Yes.
>> Um and I personally believe that um it was better that someone meet me after all of this.
>> Okay.
>> Because you know if you met me years ago when I wasn't going into politics, >> this may have thrown you off because it's a different world. And so at least now somebody would understand, okay, so she may have some death threats. I may need to know, you know, how to handle myself, you know, like they need to, you know, they need to understand that um and also understand that I am a public servant first >> and so I am constantly um pouring into other people and trying to better other people's lives and sometimes that can be a little challenging to deal with it.
>> Dating life. Yeah.
>> So but when you think of a man like are you a Kendrick? Are you a Drake?
Are you a Are you a Usher light champion right now?
>> Okay. All right. So, you going All right. So, you going more to the channel and messed it up for everybody.
>> Are you all right?
>> Yeah. So, uh Yeah. You know, I I typically date older.
>> Okay.
>> So, people that are older than me, I typically date older. Uh bald and a beard. And it's it's >> a bald and a beard and it's >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
>> OH, WE GOT OH, THAT'S ONE.
That's one. Here we go. JAMES, GIRL, WE GOT THEM ALL. When I tell you Jasmine, when I tell we got so many WE GOT SO MANY BALDY BEARDED PEOPLE UP HERE. GIRL, we will hook you up. You know, I got to tell you, I y'all stop with cheese and James and sus.
I and I love your sense of humor, too, because I just saw you on tour with Dio Hugley and Don Lemon >> and >> and I love how you mix you can mix your politics and humor. A lot of people can't do that and you're able to do it so well. And I and Don Lemon when he was here, I was asking him about running for office cuz his fans were like, "Do you run for office?" A lot of people want you to consider running for office. Is that something you would ever think about? I you know listen uh I'll never say never uh because I did that before and somehow I ended up in Congress. Um so I'll never I'll never say never but I will tell you that um right now my focus is on making sure that the American people recognize their power in this moment.
>> Yes.
>> So many people feel helpless, hopeless. And so um I'm excited to support other warriors.
Right. It's not good enough just to have one person that's outspoken. We need teams of people on every single level of government. Um and so my focus is is going to be to pivot to support others.
Um so I have a leadership pack called the fire pack. Yeah.
>> Uh we want to fuel individual rights everywhere. And so we are going to support other candidates as well as I'm going to go on tour across the country and we are going to educate people about what it is that elected officials can do, should be doing, and what they doing wrong. Um, and hopefully just get us ready cuz 2028 if if if we don't get it right and >> I don't I don't know.
>> Let me tell you, IF YOU NEED A BACKGROUND PERSON, IF YOU NEED A COMEDY PERSON, JAZZ MAN. JASMINE. JASMINE, JASINE, JASMINE, I GOT YOU.
>> I'M THERE FOR YOU. I'm telling you, you need a hype person, I'm so there for you. I just said make cuz I love you.
