When solving mathematical expressions, the order of operations (PEMDAS) must be followed: parentheses first, then exponents, followed by multiplication and division from left to right, and finally addition and subtraction from left to right. For the expression 8 - 1 * 1 - 8, the correct solution is -1, not -49, because multiplication must be performed before subtraction.

The Trickiest Equation You’ll See Today!Hinzugefügt:
Hey guys, welcome to our channel. We want to find the value of this expression. Here we have 8 - 1 * 1 - 8.
In next slide, most people when solving this math expression, first they go for this subtraction between 1 and 8 and write instead of this expression 7.
Then they go for this subtraction between 1 and 8 and write instead of this expression -7.
Finally, they go for this multiplication between 7 and -7 and write instead of this expression - 49.
But, this answer is not correct because according to the order of operations, which is PEMDAS, we have to solve this math expression in this way. First, parentheses, then exponent, then multiplication or division, and then addition or subtraction. Remember that multiplication and division have the same level of priority, and addition and subtraction have the same level of priority, too.
Now, in this expression, we have one subtraction here, one multiplication here, and one subtraction here again.
In first step, we have any parentheses.
In next step, we have any exponents. In step three, according to the PEMDAS, we have one multiplication that we have to solve it first.
Not this subtraction and this subtraction. If we do this, it is wrong.
1 * 1 = 1. Let's rewrite the expression.
Now, we have 8 - 1 - 8.
In next step, we have one subtraction here and one subtraction here. And as we know, when we have more than one subtraction in one expression, we have to work from left to right. So, we have to start with this subtraction in left side. 8 - 1 = 7.
Finally, we have 7 - 8. So, our final answer to this question is -1. Thank you for watching. Please like and subscribe if you like this video.
