In 897 AD, Pope Stephen VI conducted the Cadaver Synod, a bizarre trial where the corpse of his predecessor Pope Formosus, buried for nine months, was dug up, dressed in papal robes, and put on trial for alleged illegal papal election and church law violations; despite being unable to defend himself, Formosus was found guilty, his papacy was annulled, his blessing fingers were cut off, and his body was dragged through Rome and thrown into the Tiber River, but the public outrage led to Stephen VI's overthrow and the Church's eventual reversal of the verdict.

They Dug Up a Dead Pope and Put Him on Trial - Cadaver Synod #darkhistory #didyouknow # #historyAdded:
It sounds absurd, but it happened. In 897 AD, a pope, dead and buried for 9 months, was put on trial. [music] His name was Pope Formosus. After his death, power shifted. His enemies took [music] control of the church. The new pope, Pope Stephen VI, wanted revenge. So, he did something unthinkable. [music] Formosus's corpse was dug up from his grave. The decomposing body was dressed [music] in papal robes and placed on a throne inside a church. A deacon was assigned to speak for the corpse.
>> [music] >> Then, the trial began. Stephen the VI screamed accusations at the silent corpse. "You became pope illegally. You broke church law. You betrayed the church." The corpse, of course, said [music] nothing. The verdict was swift.
Formosus was found guilty. His entire papacy was erased. Every decision he ever made was declared invalid. Then came the punishment. [music] Three fingers of his right hand, the fingers he had used to give blessings, were chopped off. The body was stripped [music] of its robes, dragged through the streets of Rome, and thrown into the Tiber River. The people of Rome watched [music] in horror. This wasn't justice.
This was madness. Months later, Pope Stephen the VI was overthrown, imprisoned, [music] and strangled to death. The church reversed the trial.
Pope Formosus was taken from the Tiber River [music] and buried again with full honors. History remembers this incident as the Cadaver Synod, one of the darkest chapters ever recorded. [music]
