During solar storms, charged particles in Mars' upper atmosphere bunch into magnetic tubes due to the Zwan-Wolf effect, creating a temporary magnetic-like shield as solar wind drapes field lines around the planet and pushes plasma deeper into the ionosphere below 200 km, demonstrating that even planets with thin atmospheres can briefly exhibit magnetic shielding properties when the Sun exerts sufficient pressure.

Mars Sky Got Squeezed #Shorts #Mars #NASAAdded:
Mars just got squeezed by the Sun.
Solar storm hit the planet and NASA's Maven orbiter watched charged particles in Mars upper atmosphere bunch into a magnetic tube.
That is the Zwan Wolf effect.
It does not mean Mars suddenly has Earth shield.
Mars has no global magnetic bubble, so solar wind drapes field lines around it.
During the storm those lines acted like rails.
Plasma was pushed along them, squeezed deeper in the ionosphere below about 200 km.
The weird part is this had never been comprehensively seen at Mars before.
Maven turned it into a trace, pressure front, density spike, and a tail of escaping gas.
So the payoff is not Mars is protected.
It is sharper, even a planet with a thin leaky sky can briefly wear a magnetic looking shape when the Sun pushes hard enough.
