Russia marks scaled-down Victory Day parade amid Ukraine war

[00:00:00]Moving on, Russia marked Victory Day with its most scaled-back military parade in years on Moscow's Red Square as the ongoing Ukraine conflict and security concerns shaped this year's celebrations. President Vladimir Putin used his annual Victory Day speech in Moscow's Red Square to justify the war in Ukraine and denounce the NATO.

[00:00:25]Russia held the May 9th Victory Day parade under tight security due to the threat of attack from Ukraine. Unlike previous years, no tanks or heavy military equipment rolled across the Red Square. Instead, weapon systems including the Yars intercontinental ballistic missile, the S-500 missile system, and Sukhoi 57 fighter jet, drones, artillery systems, and nuclear submarine were shown on giant screens and state television broadcasts. As part of celebrations, North Korean troops marched on the Red Square with Russian soldiers. Soldiers and sailors, including some who served in Ukraine, marched through the Red Square as President Vladimir Putin watched alongside Russian veterans near Lenin's Mausoleum.

[00:01:13]The May 9th parade marks Russia's most revered national holiday, commemorating the Soviet Union's victory over the Nazi Germany, and paying tributes to 27 million Soviet citizens who died during the World War II.

[00:01:28]In his address, President Putin compared the events of World War II with the current conflict in Ukraine and said Russia would prevail as the Soviet Union did during the war.

[00:01:47]Preserving the memory of the Great Patriotic War, its true story and heroes is a matter of honor for us. We will always remember the feat of the Soviet people that it was they who made the decisive contribution to the defeat of Nazism.

[00:02:02]The parade took place as Russia and Ukraine agreed to a US brokered three-day ceasefire from May 9th to 11th with both sides also agreeing to exchange 1,000 prisoners. Despite concerns over possible attacks, several Moscow residents said they hope the temporary ceasefire could lead to peace.

[00:02:24]I hope that this ceasefire lasts longer.

[00:02:26]All in all, I don't want the war to go on. It is terrible when there is war.

[00:02:31]People, children, civilians die. I want a peaceful sky.

[00:02:35]In Ukraine's Kharkiv city as well, residents welcomed the US brokered three-day ceasefire and hoped it could eventually lead to negotiations and peace.

[00:02:47]Maybe some miracle happens and this temporary silence, this ceasefire will hold up a bit and continue. And then step by step it will move to the negotiations and the affairs will be solved in the offices, but not at the battlefields. I would like to believe that.

[00:03:04]After the parade, President Putin hosted foreign leaders at the Kremlin reception including Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico and Laos President Thongloun Sisoulith. Putin and foreign dignitaries later laid flowers and wreaths at the tomb of the unknown soldier near the Kremlin wall. The event marked a solemn tribute to those who lost their lives in the Second World War.
