When agricultural equipment breaks down during harvest operations, farmers often need to perform on-site repairs using available tools and resources, including borrowing parts from neighboring farms, using mechanical techniques like string tensioning for component removal, and applying proper tool selection (such as 9/16 socket wrenches) to successfully restore equipment functionality and continue harvest operations.

The Part We Needed Was Right Down the Road
Added:Will this be day three of wheat harvest?
Hopefully.
John Deere cannot get the part till noon tomorrow. But, our friends who farm in the next town over uh have an old combine that has possibly has the part we need. So, we are going to go over there to get it off.
So, that we don't have to wait for John Deere.
Uh Lance got Poppy going in the wheat alfalfa field. So, he's cutting off alpha.
Hopefully, it does not take long at all to get this part off and we can get the combine back going.
>> Daddy.
That see?
>> Was it not wiggling that?
What?
>> Don't use on your phone.
Good boy.
>> Car wash works for you?
>> Yeah.
>> I told you it was the best.
Wait.
>> Okay, Grant. What do you think?
>> Why would she use Why would she use >> I don't think so.
Work.
That's what I was hoping.
>> to use tomorrow to turn the whole machine.
>> How much is that?
Keep that.
I got to use Spider-Man >> It's not It's not wheeling at all.
Nope.
It's vibrating.
But, if you get that off >> If you can get it in that pin >> If I get that pin knocked out, that cog got to turn.
Can Would >> it not reach?
Huh?
If you stuck this in the the eye of the pin.
>> Oh. I thought it was skinnier than that.
I think the key's on my side.
>> I don't know which side's going to be on.
>> Okay. I don't see a key yet.
>> Found it there.
>> Was it the pipe wrench turn it up there so I can turn it?
>> No.
Put these channel locks on and see if you can turn it.
What's What does this look like?
>> [snorts] >> I'll tell you how much I love combining.
Now, pull this, James. You know what I'm going to I'm going to start drilling that through.
Just grab this and you pull out that way.
>> That one of these paddles is stuck right there.
>> Woah!
That was cool.
>> Pull, pull, pull.
>> It's hot.
>> You push that all the way up in there.
Okay, pull it back out.
>> All the way?
>> Tie your Pull that rod out.
Now, put the other piece of string on the end of that pole.
And I want you to slide it >> Slide it in on the bottom side.
>> You want this string >> Yes.
>> on here?
>> Yes.
And then push it right up the bottom.
>> Do you have to double knot it?
>> No. It'll probably be fine.
>> I would tie it this way. It don't seem like it's going to stick.
>> Okay, you can pull it out.
>> What's that?
>> Okay, go up there and pull the top string.
Okay, hold on. Hold it.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Hold it. I'm caught.
Okay.
Okay.
Hold it.
Oh, hold on a second. Let me see if I can bend that down.
Okay, now pull it.
Okay.
Hold it.
Okay.
Okay.
>> If you made the turn, go ahead and put that other string on it, or you letting it come down?
>> I'm just pulling it into the cab.
>> Okay, tie the other string on it and let me pull it.
>> There's another string. This one?
More?
>> I did.
>> Okay, it's all the way in there.
>> Okay, pull it back up the hill.
>> Ow!
What the hell?
>> Okay, pull it.
Pull the string.
Here with that.
>> Here's the end of this one.
>> Be careful that be sharp.
I think I'm going to have to loosen it because it's going to be too tight after we get it.
>> What do you loosening?
>> There's some deals up there. Going to be a pain in the butt to tension the tire.
>> Oh.
>> I need a 9/16 socket with an extension.
Like the 3/8. Look for the 3/8 drawer.
Give me a 15.
>> Millimeter?
>> Yeah.
>> I need a 15.
>> I'll go get some more.
>> Okay.
>> Where's my phone?
>> In the truck again.
>> That's right.
>> Okay.
We're going to take a lunch break.
We'll uh figure this out.
>> Can you push I need slack up here.
>> Okay.
>> Either push the top of it up or the bottom chain. I don't care.
>> Ow.
Well, I can't uh I'm putting no weight to push.
There you go.
Keep that. There's more.
Get slack.
Oh, no.
What was that battery?
Roll it. Pull it to me.
>> Yeah, pull it to you.
Whichever one's got the short slack, pull it out.
>> Oh.
If I pull it too much, it'll I'll the top in.
>> Okay.
Hold on.
So, I've got the keys in there and I need to turn all the way around a half a turn without them keys coming out.
So, I >> it need to turn?
>> I need to turn it so I can bend them.
Like how that >> So, that means they're So, basically they're you pushed them in away from you and you need to flip them.
>> And when you start if I don't hold them in they will fall out.
>> I can pull the top to me without losing too much of the bottom.
Like this?
>> I lost it. Hold on.
>> You tie a string around the bottom just in case it >> Tie the string around it and then we're going to roll it up in there and go the other way.
>> So, you want me to pull the >> I want the bottom to come out.
>> Oh, why tie a string around the bottom?
I mean then you tie it around the top.
>> You're going to have to do it real slow cuz I'm going to have to hold them in with my fingers.
>> All right, I'm going to pull the bottom.
>> Okay, real slow. Keep going.
Keep going.
Woah.
Okay.
Keep going.
Keep going.
Little bit Woah.
Turn a little bit more.
Well, not too much. Back up just a little.
>> More?
>> No.
Roll it back some.
>> Uh the top?
>> Yeah.
Okay.
Now, set it where you need it.
>> [sighs] >> Is that where you need it?
>> Depends on if that's where you need it.
It's shorter now.
Thought it was closer than that a while ago.
Need a whole 'nother link.
>> Something's not right with this.
>> I mean, it's moving freely, pretty much.
>> Need Get that Give me a 9/16 wrench out of that.
>> You had a 9/16. Oh.
>> Put it back in the box.
>> You want a wrench, not a socket?
>> I want a wrench.
>> We're going to move it closer to the shop because uh we're not having much luck on getting that chain together.
So, we're going to get it closer to the tools.
Um 107° heat index doesn't help.
Today's not going well.
>> Do we tug on it?
>> Yeah, you can try it.
>> You know how to I don't actually know how it's supposed to come any further to me than it is.
>> Well, it will if cuz I'm going to move this whole thing back.
>> I thought it moved when you beat on it.
>> It did.
>> Hang on.
Can't No, I'm still They're still not touching.
No.
>> See, it's not sliding back here.
How much is it like?
>> Same as before.
>> Now will it?
>> Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
We got it.
Oh, I hope that pin's not in the pickup still.
Oh, wait. Is it in my pocket? Oh, it's in my pocket.
Ah.
Scared me.
>> Where's the needle nose?
>> The long ones?
>> Yeah.
Maybe they're in the cab up here.
>> Yeah.
It's up >> Oh, yeah.
I need a pair of pliers or something.
I broke that pin in vice. It don't >> Just when it's going good.
Can't find a spare pin. So, we're going to grab the old chain.
I see if we can find a pin >> [laughter] >> in it.
Oh, there's more. We have backups.
>> You have to take a hammer and drive that down.
>> Okay.
>> With a punch.
With a hammer and a punch, a big steel bar right up there.
Yep.
If you can't put that rod on it and drive it down.
>> Wait, this way?
>> But you want to get out on the end closer to the chain.
>> That? Oh, this way?
>> Yeah.
Go up to the higher.
Right there.
You get ready to lose the end of your hammer.
>> How far down?
>> Enough that it doesn't hit it.
>> Seems like this direction is going to make it closer to the chain.
>> We don't want to go too far that way with it.
>> I don't know.
>> Did that chain get in touch yet?
>> Yes.
>> Like that.
>> Okay.
>> You get everything lined up up here now.
>> Looks good.
>> Now is there any slack in that chassis?
>> No. Well, at the top.
Like I can reach up to the top and kind of I can pick it up and wiggle it.
>> I need that 9/16 again.
>> Oh, whoa. Glad I didn't throw it.
>> I'm coming down.
>> Oh.
>> I got to get up underneath the stairs here.
>> Okey-dokey.
>> We asked for one, you bring two.
We need it cold in here.
Ladies and gentlemen, off to the wheat field we go.
Well, it was going fine till we heard a not so nice sound.
>> Did I kick that lever in?
>> The yellow lever?
>> Yeah.
Come here.
I want you to watch this big pulley here.
>> Okay.
>> Pull it. Yep.
>> Yes.
>> Keep coming with the front part of the >> It starts to turn, okay?
Okay.
>> Locked up?
What?
>> It's fine.
>> Then what was that noise?
>> Yeah.
It probably just locked up.
>> Okay.
All right, everything's going well in the field.
But I got a call. Kids need me.
So, I'm going to run in and take care of them real quick.
Bring Lance something to drink.
Want to move the Freightliner over around the creek over here, so it's a little closer to the combine.
And we're going to keep at it.
All is well.
Got the water delivery.
Let's go move that truck.
Woo!
So, out of here.
Drive.
>> They're ripped.
He's going to keep going.
I got to feed calves.
And get my oldest.
She's got a youth rally tonight, so we're going to get her cleaned up and ready for that. Get her dropped off.
We're going to keep on keeping on.
Got my oldest dropped off.
Stiger is wiped. He fell asleep on the way, so I carried him into Mimi's so he could rest some more.
We have another field finished. Lance is on his way to the next field. I'm going to meet him up there. Unlock the gate for him. Poppy's bringing the header.
And we'll be ready for the next field. I don't know if he's going to try to put in a couple hours before sunset or not.
>> She forgot the header.
>> Poppy gave me the wrong set of keys. Lance said, "It's the the one with all the keys on it."
So, he gave me one with all keys on it, but nobody seems to know what these go to.
Oh my goodness. Oh.
Just going to wait for Poppy to get here.
>> Take two.
You got the right keys now.
>> One bushel wheat.
>> 10 bushel.
>> One bushel wheat and 10 bushel weeds.
>> Probably 30 or 40 bushel on that combine.
>> The uh >> I couldn't put any more on that truck over there.
I put all I could on that truck. You probably 30 or 40 bushel left in that combine.
>> I guess we need to bring that truck to the house before it gets bogged down down there.
I got all that hay cut. It's a lot better hay than it was first time.
A lot more of it.
>> Oh, it's a lot taller.
I mean >> thick >> Oh, man, it's thick.
>> Going to make some hay.
>> And get it up dry.
>> It helped it to start.
It just helped the air back there to air everything up.
>> It did earlier.
Well, that's going to be it for day three of wheat harvest.
First thing in the morning, Lance and I are going to take both trucks to the co-op while Poppy gets the combine full of diesel and greased up.
And as soon as the wheat's ready to go, he's going to jump in the combine and get going.
So, thank y'all so much for watching.
We'll see y'all in the next one.
