[00:00:40]But once in a while, one passes close enough to a particle inside an atom and finally interacts.

[00:00:44]To catch that rare moment, scientists build giant detectors deep underground, inside huge tanks of water They do not see the neutrino directly.

[00:00:52]Instead, they look for the tiny flash created after a rare collision.

[00:00:55]This faint blue glow is called Cherenkov radiation.

[00:00:58]So neutrinos are detected by the footprint they leave behind.
