Sun halos are optical phenomena that occur when sunlight reflects off ice crystals suspended in cirrus clouds, which are characterized by their feathery or wispy appearance; these clouds often precede good sunset conditions.

NEWS CENTER Maine Weather Video ForecastAdded:
Well, there was something very cool happening in the sky this afternoon, but if you were like me and you didn't look up, you missed it. Yes, I took this picture with using my phone, so it's point five, so that's why the proportions are a little off there, but have a beautiful sun halo. I was at the Lilac Festival in Augusta earlier today, and that's where I saw this. So, sun halos happen when there's typically a lot of cirrus clouds in the sky because cirrus clouds are made of ice crystals, and when the sunlight reflects off of ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere, sometimes you get these sun halos or sun dogs or light pillars, but I've never seen one that's been this Mhm. perfect, essentially. Yeah, I don't think I've ever seen one, so I wish I would have known. Hey, next time you see a lot of cirrus clouds in the sky, they're the feathery or wispy looking clouds, you can get sun halos like this, and you often have very good sunsets.
Okay, good to know.
>> Little little tip and trick there of the meteorologist trade, but we're going to have less cirrus clouds around now because we're going to have to talk more about rain. So, here's look at some of our high temperatures for today. We still did get fairly warm in some spots, temperatures getting into the mid to upper 60s and even some lower 70s for our high temperatures out there today, but the rain is getting closer. So, there we have this large precip shield over other areas of New England and upstate New York, but the rain hasn't reached Maine yet, and that's because we have a very dry air mass in place. Our dew point temperatures are in the 30s and low 40s, though they have started to creep up a little bit, and essentially, this dry air is going to eat away at that precipitation until finally it becomes too strong and then we start to get in our rain tomorrow. But that won't happen until about midday. So, there is a lot of dry air around. So, tomorrow is going to be a very different day. Our high temperatures are going to be well below average for this time of year.
Areas of Down East and northern Maine might get a little bit warmer because they'll hold on to the drier conditions a little bit longer than other areas of the state, but today was the most reliably nice day of the weekend forecast. So, if you're going to be hitting the beach tomorrow, I'm certainly not going to be hitting the beach tomorrow. We'll have those showers move in in the afternoon. High temperatures will be on the chilly side, but the UV index is low. So, that is something to consider there. So, over the next few hours we will still still see these cirrus clouds around and then finally as we get to about midday, that's when we see the shower activity moving to areas of New Hampshire and into western Maine and these showers will overspread much of the state during the evening and overnight hours. And then a a secondary center of low pressure forms right next to Maine. So, that will fill in some of our shower activity overnight into early Monday morning. So, Monday morning will certainly be wet. We'll have scattered showers around. I would say light to moderate showers, but we could start to see a little bit of some clearing in the afternoon. Some of those showers will start to break up. Areas of south southern and western Maine may even get some late day sunshine if we're able to clear out in enough time while the sun is still up. Most if not all of the precip should be done between about 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. So, here's a look at that Memorial Day forecast.
Again, the first half of the day is going to be fairly wet across the state, but we will be clearing from west to east throughout the afternoon. It will be a little bit warmer with temperatures getting into the mid-60s, closer to the upper 60s if you are able to clear out of the rain and the showers, excuse me.
But if you're able to clear out of the rain and the showers, your temperatures will be a little bit higher. Marine forecast seas 1 to 2 ft. Ocean temperature is 50°.
So, we'll take a look at that 7-day forecast. So, again, I talked about today being the most reliably nice day because we are going to have the cooler and more showery weather coming in tomorrow and continuing through at least the first half of the day on Monday.
Monday clearing from west to east.
Memorial Day weekend is sometimes called the unofficial start of summer, but summer might have to wait until Tuesday and Wednesday, and that's when temperatures will return to above average for this time of year. Sam?
