By tapping into wild genetics, this project successfully challenges the bland uniformity of commercial mangoes through a sophisticated, interspecific approach. It is a compelling look at how botanical curiosity can redefine our sensory expectations of a familiar fruit.

Jade Dragon ๐ Wango Mango Tasting
Added:Hi, this is Greg and Celeste with Silky Oats Grove and we have just returned from our annual trip down to the very southern tip of Florida.
And one of our stops along the way was at Mango Man of Homestead, Richard Campbell's place. And we always go down and pick up some of the varieties of mangoes that he's growing.
And one of the things that he has been specializing in in the last several years has been wangos, which is what his name is for the interspecific crosses of Mangifera. Mangifera indica is your standard mango and that includes all the thousands of varieties of mangoes that you've heard of. There's also some wild varieties like aurata and casturiina and >> casturi >> casturi, yeah. And so there's a whole bunch of others within that genus. And what he's been working on is crossing the domesticated mango with some of the wild Mangifera species. And so he's come up with a bunch of different ones and he's going through and picking out the ones that are the best and looking for some new characteristics that we might not find in your standard mango. So we picked up a few of those and one of them is this one called Jade Dragon. And as you can tell, it's a very tiny mango or wango.
But we're going to give it a try and see what characteristics are that he has selected this one for and it's been This is my first one uh mango fruit of the year that I've cut and I've forgotten how [laughter] I cut a mango.
This is a little bit tricky because obviously with one this size, there's not going to be a lot of flesh on it.
Let's see if I can get some without skin on it.
Not much there. You just get you a little taste.
And I am sure that this is not the recommended method for eating these.
Well, it's not bad.
I would say my biggest criticism is there's just not much there. It is such a tiny little fruit that and the seed is still fairly big. I'm going to try to eat this. I'll cut you up another one.
>> If we didn't say this one's called Jade Dragon.
>> I did mention that.
>> I didn't remember.
I'm going to try peeling it this way.
>> I'm trying this one here.
And then you can kind of suck on it like a peach pit.
Can you get me another one?
>> To me, it tastes almost like a Bailey's Marvel mixed with a little citrus.
>> Okay.
Um yeah, I mean, it's I don't know. It's definitely >> decent amount of fiber.
>> Yeah, it's it's very fibrous, but it's better to me than a wild mango.
>> Mhm.
>> It's got more of a What am I going to call it?
I'm going to say citrusy.
>> Mhm.
>> Orange orange orange zesty almost even.
>> It's one you definitely want to peel to eat.
>> Yeah.
I mean that's the main criticism here is that you know from from here to here there's there's just not much on it. Um but the flavor's good and it doesn't have a lot of the things that some of the the wild mangoes tend to be much heavier in the terpenes and the >> Mhm.
>> um some of the stronger flavors. That's very mild flavored.
Um >> I think it's fine.
>> So um yeah, it's good. There's just not much there. I mean you you you you really kind of have to eat it that way, peel it and suck on the pit.
>> I'm curious to know what the tree looks like. Like if it is really productive and it's just loaded with these little orange fruits.
>> mean it would be cuz I mean obviously producing a fruit that small isn't a big strain on the tree as compared to you know a big mango. So it it very potentially has got >> And if it's a dwarf tree >> clusters even of these. So >> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
So anyway, not bad. Um uh just wish it was bigger I guess.
>> Yeah.
>> Um do we want to do these separately or >> Yep, I think so.
>> Okay.
So thanks for watching and that was oh that was Jade Dragon by the way, a mango and as far as I know the only place on the planet you can get that is from Mango Men of Homestead.
>> Yep, and they sell on weekends from there from porch.
>> And they have more than one variety there. They usually have like 20 or 30 different ones that are um >> And they're priced well I think. Yeah, they're very fairly priced.
>> Very good. So anyway, thanks for watching and we'll see you next time.
