In professional beach volleyball, experienced players often employ energy conservation strategies by starting matches with controlled, measured swings and gradually increasing intensity as the match progresses, rather than maintaining maximum effort throughout. This approach allows veteran players to preserve physical resources for critical moments while still maintaining competitive effectiveness, as demonstrated by Phil Dalhausser's performance in the 2026 AVP Huntington Beach Open where he maintained zero attack errors while conserving energy throughout the match.

Tr.Crabb/Dalhausser vs Brewster/Ierna | 2026 AVP Huntington Beach OpenAdded:
to this Valley Sports Live presentation of the AVP Huntington Beach Open. We've got a battle of the Young Bucks against our season vets. We've got our number 15 seed of Tim Brewster and Ryan Aya facing off against number four seed of our tournament, Trevor Crab. And sure you've heard this name a bunch of times, Phil Dalhauser, or we're just going to call him Phil.
>> We're kicking it off in our second match. It's an elimination match here on court one as you take a peek at Trevor Crab back to serve the 6'4 defender from Honolulu, Hawaii now finds his home in Hermosa Beach. I on the first offering >> and going thumb down on the winners. Aya misses just a bit wide.
>> One zero.
Again, I'm Rob Sparrow Courtside here at our 2026 AVP Huntington Beach Open. We have some communication problems on the Aya Brewster side, but Aya drops the rock in that deep corner off of Crab, tying us up at once.
>> Early start here. A beautiful day in Huntington Beach coming in right around 70ish degrees, low70s with a onshore wind coming from your left to the right on the screen.
roll shot and strumming the string is Trevor Crab bouncing it off that sideline. 2-1.
Some excellent play to kick off the day in a women's elimination match with our Swiss wild card team of Anuk and Zoe Ver Dep Prey defeating Betsy Flint and Kylie Deberg. Two sets to zero as we look at Phil going to his hybrid off the cable saved by Aya. Aya soft knuckle winner.
Crab on the pickup. One hand stab by Brewster goes over the net. Crab on the twisted wister winner.
3-1 in our longest rally of the day so far.
Our R1 on duty is Tyrone Tolloy.
Second referee is Renee Marcelis as a four seed of Crab and Delhauser up 31 here in set one.
>> Service misses just wide by the thin beast.
As we are here courtzside just north of the Huntington Beach Pier, the iconic H Huntington Beach Pier in Surf City. Aya takes a little off. It misses about 4 in wide.
4-2.
Crab stands at 64.
play ball at Puget Sound and Long Beach State University.
Ayerna Brewster high to the left side and Aya >> sneaks it by Phil at that left side. 34 on the turn.
>> Excellent looking swing by Aya who stands at 65 from Clearwater, Florida.
finds his home in New Orleans, Louisiana.
This his 20th AVP event.
>> Crab.
>> Crabs goes to the deep corner. Brewster gets a right paw underneath it and falls to the sand.
>> 5-3.

one of these teams. Loser finishes with a ninth place finish to kick off the AVP season.
Trevor gets up at the right side and goes high line on the spinner.
46.
And one of the things I've seen over Trevor Krab's career as he starts off slow, not going to that full pace swing.
He's like pacing himself through the tournament. And as he moves on, you start seeing a heavier and harder and faster swing.
>> Brewster to Aya and gets it off the outside hand of Phil.
Talk about thread in the needle between Phil's left hand and the antenna. There was not a lot of space and Aya was able to sneak it off that outside hand of Phil.
>> 56 Brewster misses just wide. That >> whipping tail of that jump spin serve made it go just that little bit more out of play.
Phil serving 75.
Phil's played. This is his 175th AVP event.
Crab on the pickup and Crab drills it off the pulling Ayerna.
>> Crab picks it up. Option and Phil knocks it off of Aya as he flies back into the middle of the net.
85.
Aya did everything he could to put up some kind of resistance, but Phil was able to get him far enough off the net to get that inside the block and fall on his opponent's side.
Short serve over towards Brewster. Over pass as it trickles over Phil two-step approach and goes thumb down on the blast. 95 on the switch.
on the coaching side for Phil and Trevor. Saw Sean Rosenthal or Rosie doing some uh coaching on the side of Aya and Brewster. Devin Sour undercover coaching for Tim and Ryan.
Brewster with a whippy left-handed swing dug by Crab. Crab high line. Brewster diving the line.
>> Brewster's off hand and he fires it. But a double is called on the set of Aya.
And Tim Brewster having issue with a double call on the set.
>> 105.
Got a timeout taken by Tim and Ryan trailing. They're doubled up here in the first set to the vets of Trevor Crab and Phil Dahhauser.
Interesting factoid. Tim Brewster did his undergrad work at UCLA. Was a training player for the beach volleyball team at the time. Stein Mezer.
In fact, UCLA now the 2026 NCA Collegiate Beach Volleyball Champions after winning in Gulf Shores two weekends ago, but I mentioned Tim Brewster because he did his undergrad at UCLA. Was a practice player for the beach team and then he went to law school. In fact, just graduated this last week from Lyola Marmont University Law School. So, he's ready to take on the legal world with his new jurist doctor degree because that's what we need, another attorney.
But, uh, great hard work. He's still playing on the AVP tour. Don't know how he did it because law school is a beast.
So, congratulations to Tim Brewster, the recent law school grad from LMU.
teams have found their way back on the court.
As >> you look at some of the stats here, >> leading all players with kills, Trevor with four. He's hitting 571 and he's got four digs. So, he's hitting and digging like a madman out on the court.
>> Brewster swings to the left. Phil with a return package recovered by Ryan and Tim.
Crab wipes it off the block of Aya.
>> He's frustrating the defense of Brewster and Aya. 115 our score here in set number one.
Wind kicking up just a little bit. So behind your camera view are a bunch of pin wheels for sail on the Huntington Beach Pier and they're spinning a lot more quickly than when we first started.
and Aya on the cross. Body crush >> fake the set and went to the swing 11 uh six looking at 11.
Aya's AVP best finishes. He has a fifth three times most recently at Virginia Beach in 2025.
as look at Dalhauser's option off of Aya taking advantage of him as he serves and has to make that trek to the net. So he doesn't have as much time to determine what he's going to take away as far as defense on the block.
>> Ayerna goes to his option game off of Phil and he Phil makes the turn but unable to get the ball in play.
712 point to technical >> Brewster 43rd AVP event. He sends at 6 foot goes down the line to Trevor.
Trevor going to that offspe swing in that deep zone one corner.
13-7.
Phil strolling back to that end line as he's done for many many AVP events.
Trains part time.
Tough serve into the gut. Pass by Aya.
>> Aya swatted up top by Phil, but it goes out of play.
>> It's a power swat by Phil.
as the score goes 813 at the technical for strolling on into play here. I've got a few other scores again on court one earlier this morning. Match number one actually for the women's side.
That was match number 19 elimination match. That's a team of Anuk and Zoe Ver Dep Prey.
The Swiss wild card entry defeating Kylie Deberg and Betsy Flint. Two sets to zero, 2117 and 2115.
Kylie and Betsy finish with a ninth.
Anuk and Zoe move on into the bracket and we will see them again here on court number one.
I believe that will be at 12 pm today after a couple men's matches.
Got to start filling in my bracket as we track all the action here on court number one as the teams find their way out to the court again. We've got a 138 lead for our number four seed of Phil and Trevor.
And our 15 seed, Ryan Ayerna and Tim Bruce are serving. And Aya serves that one into the net. 148.
>> Trevor back to serve. Trevor the 64 defender.
AVP best finish first place nine times at the most recent 2024 Manhattan Beach Open with Theo Brunner who just was on stadium court as Brewster drills it down the line into the Beach Juice popup stand. Again, we got pretty decent crowd here if you look at your view on that end line.
Brewster serving short to Phil.
Phil looks and Brewster gets behind it.
Ayerna runs out of real estate, >> but a bombing blast by Phil.
Tim sat in and took the bullet, but there is so much pace on the ball.
He wasn't able to cushion it up. Cushion it enough to keep it inside the partitions on the ball stop.
>> 59 Phil over to Tim. I swatted by Phil.
>> Brewster. Easy roll shot down the line.
Grazes the cable but still finds its way in that deep five corner. 10:15 for Brewster. That's kill number two.
>> Trevor.
Trevor looks shoots high line like a machine. Clockwork for Crab. That's killed number seven. They go up 16-10 here in the first set.
>> Crab and Dauser hitting a combined 786 for the set >> versus 500 for Ryan and Tim as Dollhouser on the fadeaway blast. Seth started to drift off the net a little bit, but Phil able to turn his shoulder and crosscourt between area four and five. 17- 10.
>> Brewster off the block covering his own ball was Brewster. Phil funneling the ball towards Trevor in that angle. Just a down ball and falls short of the net. 1117 on the turn >> on the side switch here.
>> Looks like the wind is definitely picking up more, but it's coming more from the upper leftand corner of your screen down towards the bottom right. It was side to side earlier, but it's beginning to shift >> as you get later. It's an onshore wind, but more of an angle. Phil, perfect pass over to Trevor. Phil Tim gets underneath it on scoop, but it goes over. Trevor on two and Trevor with a termination. 1811.
You're seeing the season vets conserving their energy here. They're not using a lot of extra energy and swinging at full pace.
Maybe twice I've seen Phil swing at full pace.
Shot out to the pin and Aya gets it inside the block. Trevor made that switch over towards that area four angle, but he wasn't shallow enough to get to it, so he tried to kick it up with his foot.
1218 for Aya. Kill number seven is hitting 545 as he serves that one long. A lot of heat on that serve, but he's serving with a win. So that gave a little extra distance to the flight of the ball.
1219 or 19 serving at 12.
Crab Tier traps it and easy pickings for Phil as he clamps. Now we have our first set point for the four seed of Trevor and Phil.
Trevor >> goes into the net.
>> 13 serving to set point number two.
Tim Brewster serving.
He's got his signals from his partner Ryan Aya.
Trevor option ball and the winner of the set by Phil easily done 2113 as our number four seed of Phil and Trevor take the first and go up one set to zero. Don't go away. We've got more AVP Huntington Beach action coming your way here on Valley Sports Live.
We'll be back in a few moments.
You feel good.
We're back in action in set number two as Phil starts it off with a bang out of the left side.
>> That's the biggest swing we've seen so far out of Phil who's hitting 875 for the match. It's kill number eight. He's got no attack errors.
Short serve by Trevor.
Tim on the save. Ayera off of the peeling fill.
>> 1-1.
>> Smart play by Ryan.
>> Float serve misses long.
2-1 for our four seed.
Phil switching balls with our volunteer ball girl in the corner there. Great crowd here in Huntington for early Saturday.
Three courts streaming. We've got Stadium Court as well as court two being streamed by Aaron Wexler on the call and myself here on court number one.
Two matches in on seven matches here on court number one. All elimination matches.
Brewster >> over towards Phil.
>> Phil over the top.
>> Easy business for Phil. They go up 3-2.
>> Phil just knows how to conserve his energy. Watch through the court.
the smooth operator after 175 AVPs in countless international competitions.
And he goes over on two off the picture perfect dig by Trevor stepping into area two to pick up that ball. Popped it up perfectly and in tempo to Phil who just knocks it down easily.
Right side to Brewster. Brewster denied by Phil.
>> And believe it or not, that's only Phil's first block for a point. Although he's got three control blocks already started down for the match. They go up 5-2 on the switch.
You have to wonder what Phil sees in his eyes when he reads >> because he takes away so much area up top of the net.
>> And Brewster catching Phil pulling into the angle, hits it off the top of his knuckle dig.
At first it looked like his dome, but his hat stayed on. was uh not affected by the shot.
Three serving a five.
Ryan Ayerna the 65 blocker serves short to Phil who gets dirty on the pass but Phil tickles the twine right down the line as you see the rope bounce off the mini dunes here on the beach.
>> 63 for Phil. That's kill number 11. Still errorfree. He's hitting a scorching 917 for the match off the cable. Brewster getting horizontal >> and a top spin winner by Brewster.
Wisely going to that line.
>> 46.
Can the team of Brewster and Aya force a third set tiebreak?
>> You see Phil turn around and fix the line that's gone vertical on their end line.
Brewster, the six-foot defender from Los Angeles, California, goes into the net.
74.
Trevor has got eight kills. has one attacker is hitting 583, but defensively seven digs >> off the cable to Brewster and the wall of shame courtesy of Phil Dhausouser.
Tight passes start drifting over the net. Aya really had no other options.
84 for the four seed >> Trevor And little two ball termination.
Ryan Ayerna unleashing the Kraken.
>> 58 as he bounces it into the pier.
Aya on the spin.
Tight ball and Aya returns the favor off of Phil. I don't know if you want to awaken the thin beast on balls like that. 68 on the turn.
Aya feasting on that overpass attack.
Ayerna that's his 10th kill who's now hitting 533.
>> Top spinser picked up by Phil.
Phil launching it off the block of Aya.
>> Aya had a a correction. Phil had a long look at Aya coming up to the net.
Seeing him coming up and taking that line and then that last second Phil put his eyes on the ball and ripped it crosscourt off the inside hand of Aya.
Phil goes into the net, >> giving Brewster and Ayara their seventh point.
And Brewster going back to the service line trying to force a third set tie break.
Crab >> on the offering and takes it downtown down the right side, but still not a full swing, but hard enough to do what it needed to do. 710.
>> Aya paused and tried to pull into that angle >> and Crab took advantage of the empty real estate down the line.
>> High right side attack and a teardrop winner by Aya falls right behind the block of Phil.
>> 810.
Just get the sense that Tim and Ryan are in a good sight out rhythm right now, but they need to start scoring some points.
>> Phil getting dirty on the pass and Phil going thumb down on the blast again.
118 and that's Phil's 13th kill.
Still zero errors, hitting 929.
What a statline.
And while he's doing that, he's got two blocks and three control blocks.
And with that, his fourth service air, the only part of the game so far that's been just a little lackluster that keeps Ryan and Tim within a pair at 119.
Lot of spin on the toss by Tim. Phil going down the line. Brewster in anticipation. Option ball blocked by Phil by Ryan. Another trap set. Phil on the control play. Phil crosscourt inside block dug by Brewster. Boss go over picked up by Phil on the offering by Ryan. Phil looks, shoots off the cable and back flipper attempt by Aya hits the sand and Phil looks back and says, "I'm good."
129 at the technical timeout on the longest rally of the day here on court one.
Lot of fantastic digs on both sides of the court, but ends up being the season vet getting the winner off the diving Ryan Ayur on that attempted back flipper dig just stuck to the back of his hand.
So, we're in our technical timeout. You can see the team of Brewster and Aya taking some advice from their coach Devin Sour who's playing with Sarah Wood I believe here in this uh in the qualifier.
Sarah's a pretty fantastic player playing with Carly Khan in recent years making it to a few semis in AVPs. across the nation.
Upandcomers Ryan Aya and Tim Brewster or Timothy Brewster if you want to go with the legal name. Again, the recent graduate of LMU Law School.
That's a fantastic achievement for Timothy Brewster as the teams make it back on the court.
Youngsters hanging tight. They're trying to force that third set tie break.
They're playing better defense now.
Keeping him within striking distance of Phil and Trevor.
>> Aya looks to the left sideline. Goes high line. Trevor digging deep into the sand but unable to come up with it. I don't know if you can see the sand clouds blowing, but it's pretty dusty beach here in Huntington.
Not good if you wear contact lenses.
10 looking at 12.
Aya off speed down the line towards Trevor.
>> Trevor high line. Bruce are going as fast as he could to get to that corner.
But that placeman A lot of area in the middle of the net.
Jump straight up and Trevor shifting towards that angle. Another short serve picked up by Trevor.
>> Trevor dug by Brewster, but it goes up and out of play into our stats team courtside.
14 kills for Trevor Crab hitting 643.
He's got seven digs.
>> Brewster off the net. Ayerna right side to Brewster. Brewster goes off speed and into the armpits of Phil. He's going for that low seam to the right of Phil and Brewster's left. 1214.
Phil looks, shoots, and easy business for the vet.
1512.
the 69 blocker from Badden, Sweden, and finds his home in Orlando, Florida. Phil Dalhouser said his name many times, seen it >> as he gets an ace off of Aya on the Voodoo float serve with a lot of movement that's assisted by the whim.
So for Dalhauser, that is ace number one. It's our only ace of the match so far. We've got a timeout taken by Ryan and Tim trailing 1612.
As you look at some of the action happening on the other courts here on the women's side, we've got a bar on court one. Haley Harward and Zelaniell facing off against Khloe Loren and Corin Quiggle. That's being called by Aaron Wexler. Actually, Harvard Odell just go up 21-20. They're serving for the set. And that's an elimination match on the women's side. Loser will get in ninth. Winner moves on.
Over on stadium court, another elimination match.
Our international wild card of Tamela and Victoria take the first set 2117 against Calpali standouts Logan Walter and Izzy Martinez 2117.
They're about to get started in the second set.
and some of our recent NCA Collegiate Beach standouts making a mark here in this AVP Huntington Beach. Referring to Logan Walter and Izzy Martinez, the ABCA All-Americans from Cal Poly, coached by Todd Rogers, Bill's former teammate.
As we go back into action, you're looking at Delhauser back to the service line serving 1612.
Brewster option easily picked up by Crab. Crab thumps it down the line.
1712 for the biggest lead of our set at five.
Phil having some words, communicating with Trevor as uh Trevor nods his head. I'm good with that. As that float serve goes long as it catches the wind.
1317.
Brewster serving on the side. Nearest to you, our viewers.
Phil keeps it in play. Save by Trevor.
Phil from his knees and somehow puts it away on the Hail Mary put away.
Crab.
Fantastic pass off the block goes Trevor and Aya on two.
And like that they're closing the gap ever so slightly. 1518 being down by as much as five. Can I Aya and Brewster inch back in?
Aya goes off speed and gets a bad contact on the serve. Goes into the net 1915.
He's a little disappointed himself after the contact cuz technically they're on that good side. Got to get those points on that good side. 1915 our score >> and Phil serves in on the net unhappy with himself.
1619 on the turn.
>> Brewster wandering back to his service area.
goes to a hybrid deep corner over towards Phil.
>> Phil on the attack. Phil dug by Tim.
>> Ayiero drifting and Phil on SWAT patrol in Huntington.
We have our first match point for Phil and Trevor. Our four seed match point serving 16.
Phil holding his jump, waiting, waiting, waiting, and then jumping last minute and swatting with both hands.
>> Ayerna the Brewster.
Ayerna swings extreme angle. The 44 fireball 17 serving match point number two.
>> Aya serving on your for side.
Aya towards Phil passed off the net.
Phil looks and goes to a soft game and we have a finish as the number four seed of Trevor Crab and Phil Dhauser to defeat the team of Ryan Ayerna and Timothy Brewster. Two sets of zero 2113 2117 with the win. Moving on, our Phil and Trevor finishing our 2026 AVP Huntington Beach Open with a ninth place finish are Ryan Ayerna and Timothy Brewster. I'm Rob Sparrow here on Valley Sports Live.
Don't go away. We've got more AVP Huntington Beach coming your way here in just a few moments, most likely on the hour.
