William Starke Rosecrans (1819-1898) was a West Point graduate (5th in his class of 1842) who served as a brilliant Union general during the American Civil War, commanding the Army of the Cumberland and achieving key victories at Iuka, Corinth, and Stones River in Tennessee; he later served as a two-term Congressman from California, chairing the Committee on Military Affairs, and in 1899, the strategic coastal fort on Point Loma in San Diego was named Fort Rose in his honor, standing today as a military landmark overlooking the city.
