Omega-3 fish oil often fails to reduce inflammation or improve brain health because most people's real problem is an excess of omega-6 from processed seed oils (creating a 20:1 ratio instead of the optimal 4:1), not a deficiency of omega-3; additionally, oxidized fish oil can actually increase inflammation, and proper brain health requires adequate choline (from egg yolks) and vitamin D, while EPA supports mood and DHA supports cognitive function.

Seniors: When NOT to Take Omega-3 for Inflammation and Brain Health | Doctor Leana
Added:So, if you're taking omega-3 fish oil right now for inflammation, joint pain, maybe brain health or mood, today we need to talk about when you might not actually need it at all. In fact, the worst thing you can do is spend money on a big bottle of fish oil every single month and find out later that it's been making your inflammation worse the whole time. Now, that sounds completely backwards, right? Omega-3 is supposed to reduce inflammation. It's supposed to protect your brain, protect your joints.
So, how could it actually be working against you? That is exactly what we're going to get into. Because here's the thing. Fish oil is one of the most popular supplements on the planet.
People take it for everything. And yet, the research on whether it actually works for most people is surprisingly mixed. And the reason for that is not what most people think. It's not about dosage. It's not even really about the brand. The problem goes much deeper than that. And if you don't understand it, you could be taking fish oil every day for years and getting almost nothing out of it or worse. Now, before I break all of this down, I want to pause for just a second because if this is hitting home for you, if you've been taking fish oil and wondering why nothing is changing, I put together something specifically for this. It's an ebook called Cellular Freedom and it is a complete step-by-step protocol for fixing inflammation and brain health from the inside out. The root causes, the right nutrients in the right forms, the mistakes most people are making. All of it laid out with the research behind it in plain language that actually makes sense and that you can start using today.
You can get your copy right now by scanning the QR code that's on your screen.
But here's what I really want you to know.
Every single person who gets Cellular Freedom is automatically entered for a chance to get a one-on-one live call with me personally.
Scan the QR code on your screen right now. I'm going to leave it up throughout this entire video, so you can come back to it anytime. But, don't let this be the video you watch and then forget about. Scan it now, or scan it at the end. Just don't leave without doing it.
All right, let's get into exactly why fish oil might not be your answer. Now, first, let's break this into two groups, because body inflammation and brain health are actually two separate problems, even though most people treat them as one.
You have people dealing with joint pain, full body stiffness, chronic aching, the kind where you wake up in the morning and everything just feels inflamed.
That's category one.
And then you have people dealing with the brain side. Brain fog, poor memory, mood problems, low motivation.
Maybe you feel completely sharp in the morning, but by 2:00 in the afternoon, your thinking just shuts down.
Mid-sentence, you lose your train of thought and it's gone. That's category two.
Most people buy one bottle of fish oil and hope it fixes both of those things at the same time.
And that is exactly where the problem starts. Here's what's actually happening. If you have chronic inflammation, it is almost never simply because you are not taking enough fish oil.
The real driver in most people is an excess of omega-6, not a lack of omega-3.
And what is omega-6? It comes from seed oils, vegetable oil, canola oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil, corn oil. These are in almost everything processed. And what omega-6 does at those levels is directly compete with omega-3 inside your body.
They use the same enzyme pathways.
So, if you are flooding your system with omega-6 from processed food and cooking oils, and then you take fish oil on top of that, you are trying to bail out a sinking boat with a teacup. You cannot win. The ratio matters far more than the absolute amount.
Most people's omega-6 to omega-3 ratio is somewhere around 20 to 1. It should be closer to 4 to 1.
So, you can take all the fish oil in the world and still have a ratio problem, and the fish oil is not going to save you. And here is the part that most people have never heard, and this one genuinely surprised me when I first came across it.
A significant portion of the fish oil supplements on the market, especially the cheap ones, the big value bottles from the pharmacy, are already oxidized by the time you open them.
An oxidized omega-3 doesn't reduce inflammation. Oxidized omega-3 creates it.
Rancid fish oil is actually pro-inflammatory.
So, here's a test you can do right now.
Open one of your fish oil capsules and smell it. If it smells like anything, anything at all, that's a sign it has gone bad.
Good quality fresh fish oil should smell like almost nothing or very mildly of the sea.
If it smells fishy or strong, you are putting a pro-inflammatory substance into your body every single day while you think you are helping yourself. This is why so many people say fish oil did nothing for them after months of taking it.
And that is not a coincidence. The quality and the form of fish oil matters more than whether you take it or not.
And look, this is exactly the kind of thing I go into with real depth inside Cellular Freedom.
Which forms to buy, what the label actually needs to say, how to test what you have right now, and what the alternatives are if you want to skip the guesswork entirely.
If you haven't scanned the QNR code yet, it is still on your screen. Grab Cellular Freedom and get entered for that one-on-one call with me.
Let's figure out your specific situation together. Scan the code and I'll see you inside.
Now, let's talk about what actually does reduce inflammation. If you are not sleeping well, no amount of omega-3 is going to override that.
Sleep is the single most powerful anti-inflammatory tool your body has, and it costs absolutely nothing.
When you're sleep deprived, your inflammatory markers spike. Cytokines, IL-6, CRP, these go up significantly after even one or two bad nights in a row.
Fish oil cannot compensate for chronically poor sleep. So, if you're waking up at 2:00 a.m., 2:30, 3:00 in the morning, lying there more awake than you were before you went to bed, fixing that is going to do more for your inflammation than any supplement on the market. Now, vitamin D.
If you're low in vitamin D, and a large portion of people are, especially those who spend most of the day indoors, you are going to have chronic systemic inflammation regardless of what else you do.
Vitamin D is one of the most important regulators of your immune response and your body's inflammatory signaling.
And here's the connection that most people completely miss.
Vitamin D and omega-3 actually work together.
If your vitamin D levels are too low, your body's ability to use omega-3 is impaired.
So, you could be taking high-quality fish oil, doing everything right, and still getting almost zero benefits, simply because your vitamin D is not in the right range.
Get that checked before you spend any more money on supplements.
And then there's blood sugar.
Every time you eat refined carbs or sugar, you trigger an inflammatory cascade.
Oxidative stress, a spike in inflammatory markers, and it happens every single meal if you're eating that way.
No supplement, omega-3 or otherwise, is going to fix an inflammatory diet. The food always wins.
You cannot out-supplement a bad diet.
That is just not how the body works.
Now, let's talk specifically about the brain health side, because this is a completely different problem and most people are approaching it completely wrong.
DHA is the specific type of omega-3 your brain actually needs.
And your body can technically make DHA from plant-based omega-3 called ALA, which comes from flax seeds and chia seeds and walnuts.
But here's the problem. The conversion rate from ALA to DHA in your body is somewhere between 5 and 10%. 5 to 10%.
So, if you are relying on plant sources for your brain health and thinking you're covered, you are getting roughly a tenth of what you actually think you're getting.
A lot of people on plant-based diets are chronically low in DHA and they do not know it. And they don't connect it to the brain fog and the mood issues they can't seem to shake.
But here's the one I really want you to hear because almost nobody is talking about this.
One of the biggest overlooked causes of brain fog, poor memory, and low mental energy has absolutely nothing to do with omega-3.
It is choline deficiency.
Choline is what your brain uses to produce acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter responsible for memory, focus, and learning. And the single best source of choline by a significant margin is egg yolks.
Not fish oil, eggs.
I know someone who is spending a lot of money every month on high-end fish oil for brain fog and had been doing it for almost a year with no real change.
The first thing that made a noticeable difference for them was just eating two or three eggs every morning. Within 2 weeks. That's it. So, before you invest in more supplements, just try eggs for 2 weeks and see what happens.
It sounds too simple and that is exactly why most people skip it. And look, I'll be completely honest with you here. I used to take the big bargain bottle from the pharmacy for years thinking I was doing something genuinely good for my health.
If I had known it was probably already rancid by the time I cracked the seal, I could have saved myself a lot of money and a lot of truly awful fishy burps.
Now, if you're taking omega-3 specifically for mood or anxiety, EPA is the form you actually want, not DHA.
EPA is far more relevant for mood stability and the mental health side of things.
But, if your cortisol is chronically elevated from ongoing stress, EPA is still not going to fix that.
B vitamins, B6, B12, and folate specifically, are critical for producing serotonin, dopamine, and the other neurotransmitters that regulate your emotional state.
If you're deficient in those, your mood is going to stay off balance regardless of what you're doing with fish oil.
Certain medications deplete B vitamins as well. Metformin is one of the most common. So, if you're on anything regularly, that is worth looking into specifically.
Now, if you have genuinely looked at all of this, you're cutting the seed oils, vitamin D is in range, you're sleeping better, you're eating eggs, you've cleaned up the diet, and you still want to add omega-3 on top of all of that, here is what you need to know to actually make it work.
The form matters enormously.
Most cheap fish oil is in what's called the ethyl ester form. Absorption on this is poor.
What you want is the triglyceride form.
It costs more, but your body processes it correctly and you actually get the benefit you paid for.
Take it with a fatty meal, not on an empty stomach, because omega-3 is fat-soluble and absorption without dietary fat drops significantly.
A lot of people take it first thing in the morning before eating anything.
Don't do that. If you are plant-based, algae oil is the original source anyway.
Fish get their DHA from algae in the first place. So, you can go straight to the source and skip the middle man entirely.
And do not judge omega-3 supplementation after 2 weeks.
You need at least 8 to 12 weeks of consistent daily use before you will see meaningful changes for inflammation.
Set a reminder 3 months from now and then actually evaluate it. And if you haven't seen my video on fixing the arterial health through your actual diet without buying a single supplement, I'll put it right here. That is the real foundation of everything we talked about today.
Now, one final time, the QR code is still on your screen.
Scan the QR code right now, get your copy of Cellular Freedom. You've been taking the wrong things for the wrong reasons. Cellular Freedom is how you fix that.
