[00:00:13]As you can see, it's still raining in Scotland. You might remember this park up from uh Vanlife Unfiltered series.

[00:00:21]We've been here before and from this you can tell that we're back in Gleno.

[00:00:26]However, it's raining quite badly and I'm getting soaked. So, let's go back in the van.

[00:00:35]So, as I said, >> hello.

[00:00:38]>> We're back in Gleno. It's Saturday 20 and we're just starting to like we're just starting a day. You can probably hear it from my voice. I'm a bit on the cusp of being ill, but not ill. I'm not feeling the greatest and with each day I'm progressively getting worse. I feel like >> problem is as well is I think germs will spread like wildfire in here because we're literally in each other's airspace all the time. I said yesterday that I had like armes started with like a scratchy throat and now I've got a slightly scratchy throat, but I don't know if that's just like Yeah, you definitely sound worse. The thing is what's not helping that constantly battling the rain and winds and bad weather and we just started we tried to kind of embrace it and still go for walks but obviously it's not ideal for when you're in a condition like this.

[00:01:32]>> We met up with some friends yesterday and went for a walk which was lovely. We were out basically all day walking, weren't we? But we got very wet.

[00:01:41]>> It was not cold to be fair. It was wet.

[00:01:44]>> That's that that's the thing. We we haven't filmed anything for probably 2 days.

[00:01:48]>> Yeah, just had a couple of days just to chill out basically, do some work, whatever.

[00:01:52]>> But we're ready to move on. So, we have like a rough plan where we want to be in few days. So, we're heading towards purely just to collect a parcel from there, but I do have few places saved in the town as well. So, it would be nice to check these. But there's another exciting thing from that from that place that you can get a ferry to either Mo >> Mo. Yeah.

[00:02:17]>> Which we considering on doing it because we still got quite some time to spend in Scotland and we thought we might as well maybe go and explore some islands or something like that. So to get there it's like few hours drive. So we're not going to try to get there today.

[00:02:32]Probably going to break the journey in 2 days or something like that.

[00:02:35]>> Yeah.

[00:02:36]>> And see how the weather is. Yeah. So, we're going to cook some breakfast, pack the van, and make a move.

[00:03:10]Yummy, yummy.

[00:03:40]So it was another nice day at this James Bond road or whatever people call it.

[00:03:45]>> Glenn Glen road I think it is.

[00:03:49]>> We had the plan to climb Ben Neeras yesterday but obviously for the weather reasons we chosen not to. The summit weather was still saying 40 mph and the slight showers.

[00:04:00]>> Okay.

[00:04:01]>> And it's like the weather was simply not good for climbing such a mountain. So we said obviously no.

[00:04:09]>> But we also think we might have seen a film set >> potentially. So, we know that they're filming the new like the remake of the Highlander up here and they've been filming at Eene Donan Castle, but there was almost certainly a film set that we walked past because it well, it just looked like it, which was very, very cool.

[00:04:29]>> So, that was an experience of its own.

[00:04:31]>> Yeah.

[00:04:31]>> Looking for Henry Caval. Unfortunately, we called him and called him. Not not we, me, me and my friend called him and called him. Uh, but unfortunately, he did not respond to our calls. Yeah, we heading towards a depending from the weather, we might eat something, we might not.

[00:04:49]>> Yeah.

[00:05:35]Be here a while.

[00:05:48]Okay, that's couple quid later. We got some water. But the problem is that as mentioned earlier, we said that we want to split the drive to Ubin and sort of couple days to get this water. We literally had to drive pretty much all the way there. We're like 10 minutes away from it.

[00:06:11]>> I know. And I feel like very miserable.

[00:06:14]Today, nothing is going as planned. Now, we're going to have to find a park up in Orin.

[00:06:23]So, after driving around in circles trying to find where to park, seems to be quite tricky to find a free parking space here in Orin. But we found this one and park for night which looks quite nice spot. Store it there. And the highlight of this park up would be this view.

[00:06:51]You can sort of see the whole port.

[00:06:57]Yeah. So, as you can see, that's the port and I guess that's the ferry that we potentially going to take in few days. But yeah, the views look incredible.

[00:07:08]Wow, look at that. The mountains there in the distance as well. Beautiful. And the the village itself or should I call town? I don't know. I guess it's a town.

[00:07:18]The town itself is also really nice. It look like there's like a lots of shops.

[00:07:24]So, I feel like maybe tomorrow we can explore the town, but today we're just not up for anything. We literally just found a leisure center in the in the town. We had a showers which were really cheap actually. It was £22 or something like that per person. So now we just need to find a parker that we can just do nothing for the rest of the day because I'm just not feeling it.

[00:07:51]My mood is quite low. My energy levels quite low. My nose is blocked. I just want to just lazy afternoon in the van.

[00:08:01]So tomorrow we can wake up fresh and go explore the town.

[00:08:12]All right, here we go.

[00:08:14]That's going to have to be a parker for tonight because there's definitely no other better options unless we go and to some sort of air. It's like 15 minutes from here, but it's again £10. So that's the only option that we can stay for free.

[00:08:35]But it's time for to cook some dinner because we've been doing nothing basically.

[00:08:40]>> I've had no energy to do anything. I just can't bothered.

[00:08:43]>> Yesterday's hike to Bless kind of drained me completely. As I said earlier, I wasn't feeling myself anyway.

[00:08:50]So, good slow day. It's going to hopefully going to give more energy tomorrow so we can explore the town as >> hopefully if the weather stays nice, we can just go out for most of the day and wander off and have a little nosy about.

[00:09:02]>> But now we need to cook some dinner. So, I I will snap me fingers and dinner's going to be here on the table.

[00:12:32]All right, we need a coffee because we haven't had a coffee yet. So, I think we're going to start heading back to the van. And I think maybe we're gonna try to park next to that big thing up the hill.

[00:12:55]>> Okay. Here we are. Car park literally next to this. Well, they call it the tower. I don't know how is that a tower.

[00:13:06]But before we head there to check it out, let's have a coffee.

[00:13:20]All right, this is getting old now.

[00:13:24]Every single time when we want a something as simple as a cup of coffee or cup of tea, it turns into a whole production.

[00:13:42]And don't get us started how long it takes this thing to boil.

[00:13:47]>> We have been running our van on this teeny tiny 800 W inverter, which is great for things like laptops and cameras, but for anything that draws more power, forget it.

[00:16:21]Emily is going to spit some facts about this place because she's done her research. It's some finished building.

[00:16:26]That's the thing. But it was inspired by Rome's coliseum.

[00:16:35]Which is quite cool, isn't it?

[00:16:37]>> Very cool.

[00:16:38]>> Is it actually meant to have a roof or >> Yeah. So, I'm going to cheat, I'm afraid. Built in the late 1890s by John Stewart Mck to keep the local stonemasons employed during winter. It was inspired by the Roman coliseum and it was supposed to be a grand museum and gallery, but McK died in 1902. So the outer shell was the only part that was finished. It's about 200 m round, has 94 arches, and they're all made from local Bornaway granite. And now it's just a beautiful garden.

[00:17:10]>> Not much to the story. It was a It was an idea that somebody died before they'd finished, which is quite sad, actually.

[00:17:18]>> It's got like a view room platform. You can see the whole town from here.

[00:17:23]It's very cool. And uh it feels like the the bag pipes in the background coming from the town gives such a cool vibe. A little piece of Rome and Scotland.

[00:17:43]>> Yeah. Bit of sunshine.

[00:17:46]>> I mean, there's there's not like loads to it, but if you're in the area or you're waiting for a ferry to go over to Maul, come and have a look cuz it's quite cool.

[00:17:53]>> Yeah, it's I mean, you can see the whole whole town from >> the car park. It's literally like 20 steps up. You've really got even no way to walk. So, there's no excuse. Should we get back to the van before we get very wet?

[00:18:05]>> Yeah. I don't think it's that wet.

[00:18:08]>> It's quite wet. Let's go back in the van.

[00:18:11]Look at that. So cool. Now that the sun Oh, it's one way.

[00:18:17]>> This little town kind of reminds me a bad roads. Like when you go up the hill, they're like all these narrow. Yeah.

[00:18:26]Residential streets are like narrow, steep, windy. We were speaking about like how difficult people might find this uh town just to stay overnight if you're like looking to use a ferry. Like there's literally every single car park that you can pay for 24 hours says no sleeping in vehicles allowed. There's literally nowhere to stay. So you kind of have to drive out of the town. There is a couple on park for tonight, but they're not. But the one we stayed at last night by the leisure center. That was okay.

[00:19:00]>> The cat's a bit noisy.

[00:19:02]>> It's quite noisy. It's by a park.

[00:19:04]>> Then there's another one like air one, but it's like only four spaces >> and that's 15 minutes out.

[00:19:10]>> Yeah. So, >> it's just a really awkward place to park basically. But it's lovely for the day, but I think to try and like our plan was to knock around here for a couple of days while we're waiting for a parcel.

[00:19:19]But >> now we just come up with like a different plan and we heading out of the town because after checking the tracking of the of the parcels, we can see that like one of the parcels ain't going to turn up until Tuesday. So So we're going to head out. We found a park up on park for night. It's half an hour away. So we'll head there and see why. see what it looks like.

[00:19:44]>> Spend the day exploring tomorrow and then figure some stuff out after that.

[00:20:18]Well, I can tell you that's a cracking park up right by the sea. You can open our back doors, have this view. I'm pretty sure that's the island mall.

[00:20:35]But wow, I can't believe I'm standing here in a t-shirt.

I want a toaster. It's just like >> we want all the things that the inverter has absolutely cap all the capabilities to do. It's just that we don't have the storage.

[00:21:53]How do we put it? Every single time we need to use it if we're keeping it, let's say, in the garage >> to go out, which isn't the end of the world, but also the garage then needs a sort out.

The thing is I've checked all trails and OS maps and this this part foot path is not on the map any maps at all. And I was wondering, can we get up there on this actual cliff? Yeah, >> it's very overhanging. I'm not sure how much I'm loving standing underneath it.

[00:24:25]>> But my original plan was to wake up early early in the morning, like just before sunrise, come here.

[00:24:40]But when I saw that there's no trail, I was like, "Okay, maybe I can't even get it." So, I didn't even try.

[00:25:07]>> If I'm going to mention quite a few times today that Emily is being horrible to me or I don't know, she's just grumpy a bit. She's on mean.

[00:25:18]And you see how like we've seen so much wildlife as well.

[00:25:22]>> We literally there's like a yesterday evening we saw a sheep with a lamb.

[00:25:27]>> Yeah. walking this path and we were like thinking like where the hell they're going and this morning they come back.

[00:25:33]>> So they've got the it leads somewhere.

[00:25:35]It must do. If sheep can make it, we can. And then there were bunnies all running around.

[00:25:40]>> What a lovely place. It was a really beautiful spot to stay the night. Very quiet, very peaceful.

[00:25:45]>> I don't feel like that car park. Like it didn't make me feel like we shouldn't be there. It was almost a welcome thing. A welcomed thing. I don't know. We probably going to go take a little boat to the other island. Maybe go have a coffee in the actual village. See if we can find >> This is very Madiraa.

[00:26:59]>> Right. So, as you can see, there's a bit of a drop down there. Clearly, no foot path. And if you go down here again, like how the hell are you going to go back up? So, I think this is the point where I'm going to turn around and we can start heading back at the direction, explore the village and maybe the island Right.

[00:27:44]We just over heard that um the lady said to some other people that when the time table shows it, >> she' just come on a boat from the island herself, didn't she?

[00:27:55]>> And basically when the time table says like let's say4 to 11 at that time, you need to press the button and I guess the boat from there comes >> or you just well I guess you just press it whenever you're there and the boat comes at the next >> time slot. Yeah. So, we have like 20 minutes where we come across this looks like an old pier.

[00:28:15]>> The whole place is so nice here. Like the scenery like you look 360 like it's so pretty everywhere. There, there islands.

[00:28:31]Oh, the sea looks incredible. All clear.

[00:29:35]Maybe there's like a a bin boat coming here collecting the rubbish. Then again in that um waiting room there's like a post office boxes where they send.

[00:29:47]>> So people basically leave their parcels there. The ferrymen take it back. Same from the other side basically. So they've got a system for their parcels.

[00:29:55]What a gorgeous little place.

[00:29:57]>> It's You can clearly say see that it's driven by a community >> that lives on the island, >> but like all the little pathways through the houses. I just think it's gorgeous.

[00:30:07]Never really seen anything like it.

[00:30:10]>> Feel like I'm on holiday within a holiday.

[00:30:24]We just um came across like a foot path probably leading around the actual um island, but it looks like um it might have been like some sort of quarry and maybe the actual island that that maybe it was main sort of what people used to do here like they lived here's >> worked in the quarry.

[00:30:46]>> Yeah. Yeah. And there's lots of slate squares which we've seen before in quaries and around quaries, but some have got like old disused a lotments and stuff, but it's a very strange It's beautiful. I love it. But it's strange.

[00:30:59]>> You're like you come across like this >> and it's like there's a bath there.

[00:31:05]>> That's not unusual for farms though. A lot of farms have a bath. My uncle used to have a bath up the yard full of water. But like is this somebody's like garden? Do they pay to have like a Cuz this one's nice in comparison to this one here.

[00:31:19]>> So, I don't understand. I'm so confused.

[00:31:22]But I also love the weirdness of it.

[00:31:25]>> But that that looks literally like a quarry to me.

[00:31:28]>> There's a lot of slate for it to not be or not have been a quarry. I have information.

[00:31:34]>> Oh, and then it's got information.

[00:31:36]>> It's very cool. It's a car-free 62 acre island known as the former center of the Scottish slate industry with a permanent population of around 60. It is the smallest permanently inhabited island in the area and features unique flooded slate quaries. The island was a major slate producer from the mid 17th to early 20th century with seven quaries. A devastating storm in 1850 flooded the quaries causing the in industry to decline. The island is carf free and accessed via a small passenger ferry.

[00:32:10]The ferry has no set timetable.

[00:32:12]Passengers use a switch system at the pier to call it which we did. It hosted an an hosted annually in September. They have a stone skimming championships here. The island features a visitor trail around the flid flooded cory pools which we're doing which are popular for wild swimming. The surrounding waters are known for marine life including dolphin seals and occasional whales while eagles can be spotted in the area.

[00:32:34]The island is privately owned by the Eastowl Island Company.

[00:32:58]>> Well, it's flooded. So it's either flooded from the rain or the sea. I think this one's salty because I can see where the sea might come in. But this one, this side is called >> very unlikely. But there's one way to find out. We walk down there and you lick it, but then it's not flowing. So maybe don't lick it.

[00:34:28]So, just just a little thing. I think I already said it, but this maybe not this one in particular, but they hold every year an annual stone skimming championship, which I just think is the most magical thing I've ever heard. And I would love to come and witness that actually unfold. I just think I can imagine the skimmers down here, people watching all around the outside. What an experience. I could be completely wrong and be like really romanticizing it, but >> So the rules are you use this rock as your feet, >> but I was better on the other rock.

[00:36:53]And that's the thing like I just love the fact that we came across places like this. I haven't had this place saved to visit. I haven't found this place on Instagram or Tik Tok. We literally just bumped into this place without even knowing what's this place. And I think that's what really excites me about this traveling thing. Sometimes you don't need to chase all these tourist places, all these highlights that you see on social media. Sometimes it's enough to just come to the little island where there's like 60 people live living here and you can see these views from the top of the island. What the hell? I didn't even realize that there's a trick point here.

[00:40:19]>> Yeah. The options were to pick up the parcel tomorrow and then go tomorrow afternoon on the ferry or as they both come in, pick them up today and then see if we could book a later ferry.

[00:40:35]>> It's going to get us to Maul for 9, which is a bit later, but actually because we're arriving later, >> some of the parkups that are closer to the port, better to turn up later if you can. We're going to head back to the open errands, pick up the parcels.

[00:40:50]Ideally, we need to top up the water, get rid of the rubbish, uh get all the bits, get some shopping done, top up a bit more fuel, and fingers crossed be there by 7:00.
