JWT Explained: How Stateless Authentication Actually Works | JWKS, RS256, Auth0

JWT (JSON Web Token) is a stateless authentication mechanism where the server does not need to store session data in a database; instead, all authentication information is encoded in the token itself. A JWT consists of three parts: the header (containing the algorithm type like RS256 or HS256 and key ID), the payload (containing user data such as user ID and email), and the signature (which proves the token has not been tampered with). The stateless nature means the server can verify tokens without database lookups, enabling easy horizontal scaling, but it makes token invalidation on logout challenging. For external providers like Auth0, Firebase, or AWS Cognito, JWT validation uses JWKS (JSON Web Key Set) endpoints that expose public keys, allowing servers to verify tokens without access to the provider's secret keys.
