[00:00:00]In 1814, an elephant walked across the frozen River Thames during the Little Ice Age. Temperatures plummeted across Europe.

[00:00:26]The extreme cold wasn't the main reason it froze. It was actually a massive architectural accident caused by a bridge.

[00:00:34]The Old London Bridge was a medieval behemoth built with incredibly thick, closely packed stone pillars.

[00:00:41]Those 19 narrow arches acted like a giant dam.

[00:00:45]They drastically slowed the river's flow, trapping chunks of ice until they jammed together, artificially freezing the water from the bridge backwards.

[00:00:54]So when they finally demolished the old bridge in 1831 and replaced it with wider arches, the trapped water rushed through rapidly.
