About 40 light-years away from Earth, astronomers discovered an exoplanet called diamond planet 55 [music] Cancri e. And what makes this world extraordinary is what scientists believe may exist beneath its surface. The planet is extremely different from Earth.

[music] Parts of the planet may have formed into diamond. Not tiny diamonds, but gigantic layers >> [music] >> of crystalline carbon stretching beneath the surface. A world where entire landscapes could [music] theoretically contain diamond-rich materia. But despite sounding beautiful, this planet [music] would be completely deadly. Extreme heat, volcanic activity, a hostile atmosphere, no oceans, [music] no life as we know it.
