In tower construction, equipment failure often results from gradual loosening of components under sustained wind loads, particularly when prototype or additional equipment increases wind loading on the structure; proper tensioning of guy lines and regular inspection of shackle pins are essential maintenance practices to prevent catastrophic failure during severe weather events.

TOWER #1 FAILURE!Added:
So, um, last night, I dialed into the uh remote camera and I'm just seeing the cloud formation look really nice. I'll record it for a bit and see how I get on.
Uh, cuz sometimes at the end of the video, I like to put a bit of a time lapse in. Now, watch the back the guy line nearest to us, so where my cursor is here, this line, all of a sudden, I realized was just flying around. Now, the wind happened to be coming towards this guy line. Now, look at this. Look at this. Watch this. Watch this. Look at this for a wind.
Yeah, okay. That is definitely something's wrong. So, I thought, well, while the wind, my goodness, look at the yachty. It's actually blowing upwards.
>> [laughter] >> That's insane. I I've never watched this before.
I was gone by this time. I'm in the car coming up to this zoom. But, the yachty's actually doing this.
The wind's [snorts] so strong.
See, that's good, right? Cuz I like to test this out. What's going to go wrong?
But, I thought what had happened? Had the broke rope Had the broke rope and Had the rope broken? Had another bloody shackle pin come undone?
I didn't know. I'm in the car by this time and as you can see, if you watch the weather, I mean, it just goes insane.
Now, we are up in about 15 minutes.
I try and work it out what's going on.
By this time, the wind's calmed down.
But, we were lucky because the wind was coming towards us and if effectively, oh, look at the weather. Haha.
>> [laughter] >> I just couldn't work out. And let me take you outside and I'll show you what went wrong.
I'll tell you what, the weather's a hell of a lot different than it was last night. So, it was this top guy here.
And it was flying right out there.
And me, you would have thought, in reality, with all my marine experience, that I would uh would have known this, but I just didn't think they would undo.
Possibly. So, I need to I mean, that's the next job, isn't it? I got to do all these up.
So, I need tension all these up, blue light top lock tighten them and everything. The thing is, the reason I didn't is that all these ropes need replaced with the Dyneema. Then I was going to do the tensioning.
It's funny, you know, when um we had the first disaster, that's the day that I forgot to do up the shackle pin and everything fell over.
Uh there was a guy said, "So, you knew there was a storm and you put it up?"
Absolutely, because what's the point of me taking it down every time there's a breeze? I got to work out it's called experience, isn't it? That's how you gain experience.
I mean, how many motorcycle engines have I blown up or you know, gudgeon pins have I forgot to put in or you know, piston rings I put in upside down or the wrong way around or forgot one.
And then you become gradually become a bit of an expert, to be honest, cuz you know where all the failure points are.
Now, I know the comments are going to be, "You shouldn't have done this and you shouldn't have done that." Whatever.
It didn't actually fall over, and if it did, it would have been the price of a couple of poles, another 40 lb and a couple of days work. Cuz we know we can fix this in hours, even if the whole thing does fall down.
What probably didn't help actually is I have got the prototype 160 m vertical right on the top.
It's not connected.
It supplies a lot more wind load, and I think because of that, these back guys must have loosened, and then just the turnbuckle was kind of free to move around. I just don't know.
Anyway, good experience, and I'm pleased that I'm actually pleased it happened, right? Because unless things do happen, >> [music] >> you never get experience. And with that experience, you don't know what can go wrong and what can go right.
Something like that. Enjoy your radio, guys. I'll see you next time. All [music] right, bye for now. I want to know why the sheep are always trying to eat [music] the the the DX10 and the and my ropes and stuff.
They keep putting their heads through and nibbling it all.
And anyway,
