Crossing the hills on UK Full Self-Driving
Added:Tesla's full self-driving is the hot topic of conversation amongst a lot of Tesla owners. Well, at least it is for the people who are interested in that kind of thing. I have got the other version of FSD. I'm in the middle of doing a whole load of testing and today we're going to do things it's not going to be happy with.
Hello again YouTube and welcome back to Just Get a Tesla. And yes, I am here in my all-wheel drive Juniper. I have got FSD capability. Yes, the other FSD. And we are going to drive the thing cross country on some interesting hilly roads.
And the only way that I've got any chance of trying to get FSD to actually tackle those is to be making extensive use of the speed scroll wheel thing.
You'll see when we get going.
Actually, before we go, just for absolute clarity, when I say the other FSD, I am talking about FSD capability.
If you're on hardware four in most of Europe, this is the FSD that you can subscribe to today. If you're on hardware three all across the world with the exception of North America, this is the version of FSD that you can get today. It's called full self-driving.
It's not my fault that it's not the same full self-driving as the supervised version that people get excited about.
It is what it is. Tesla have sold me full self-driving and I'm going to test it.
On our way out of Rochdale and we were doing so well until we got to this van where again I'm going to have to disengage to go around it because I think it would just park me immediately behind it. Um, but as soon as we clear we'll go back on.
So, I have actually had to disengage it a couple of times already uh just in the little bit. Why is it gone to 20? 30? Thank you.
Just on the little bit in between shots.
I tried to switch it on and it panicked and switched itself off. That's fine.
I can't have the camera running the entire time or it melts. So, I've got to be a little bit picky now. It says So, here we go. Stopping for traffic lights unless I press my throttle, in which case it will go to green.
Yeah, the line has gone to green because I have told it to drive through. Had I not touched the throttle, it would have gone to red, the line, and we would have stopped on a green signal. Now, we're doing it again now.
I'm having to put my foot on the throttle to tell it to drive through.
So, this is the No, that lane. So, I've got to disengage it and Ooh, there we go. I've got to disengage it anyway.
This is the traffic light recognition part of full self-driving.
It has this thing where basically, if you're running the system, um every single set of traffic lights that it sees, it assumes that you have to stop at regardless of whether they're red or green.
So, unless you dab the throttle and tell it that you want to go, it will stop on a green sign on a green light. And I might actually find somewhere later with no traffic just so I can demonstrate that. It is the most baffling thing.
Obviously, the other version of FSD doesn't do that. It will just drive itself through them when they're on green and not when they're on red. Much, much better, but this global version of FSD, this hardware 3 version of FSD does stupid things.
Actually, you know what? Hardware 3 FSD, maybe we should just call it that because that's kind of how it is. I know here in most of Europe hardware 4 also runs on this version of FSD, but that's a regulatory thing. But in essence, there are the two different versions of FSD, the hardware 3 one and the hardware 4 one. If you're watching this in North America, I am aware that it's entirely different for you, but I'm talking about the globe, everywhere that isn't you, this is what we get.
So, we stopped at these lights and I did have FSD running. I didn't video it, but the red light means that it stopped by itself, so it should now go. It's not going. I've had to What?
Nope.
>> [laughter] >> I had already told it to go, right? Uh and then I dabbed the throttle to tell it again to go and it still didn't go.
And then when it did go, it was going in the wrong direction.
>> [laughter] >> Never mind. Okay, we are going to have a whole load of fun with this. Now, according to the nav, we're going up onto the motorway. We are not. I know better than the car, so we're going to go my route. Again, it's slowing down for a green light, uh which I hadn't even realized it was doing that until I suddenly realized we were slowing, so I've had to apply a lot of throttle.
Um Yeah, this um green light recognition feature, I think is more trouble than it's worth, but this is what you get. You can turn it off, of course. You can turn it off, but at the moment, I think we're going well fast into this. I mean, I'm hands-off, but I would have slowed down a long time before that because why on earth do you want to go flying up and then have to use fairly hard regen and potentially blended braking there as well. That doesn't make any sense at all. It's going way too fast. You can see the traffic stopped from a mile back. Ease off, yeah?
So, we should resume by ourselves.
Stopping for traffic light in 200 ft.
So, I'm going to put my foot on the throttle until it turns green. Has it turned green? Has it turned there? No.
And I just picked the wrong lane anyway.
>> [laughter] >> So, it doesn't matter.
Right.
No, it's not a fault. It's a 40 limit, not a 30 limit. There we go.
It's about to be a 30 limit, so again, so it doesn't crash the speed limit, I'm going to dial backwards on the right-hand scroll wheel and give it a double pull back until we get to 30.
Although it's still breaking Every time I lift my foot off the throttle, it's breaking even though it's a 30 limit and I'm doing 30 every single time. So, I'm going to have to turn it off now because I have got somebody behind me, but that is that's just stupid. Why is it breaking? There was no need for it to be breaking going in a straight line at the speed limit with no no obstacles in front of us. So, we're turning left at these lights, and then once we've turned left, we'll have a go at resuming.
Right.
No.
No. Ah, we've got parked cars up ahead.
We'll get past parked cars around the bend, and then we'll have another go.
Okay.
>> [snorts] >> I did actually pull over there and let some other traffic pass because I'm not going to be going fast up here because of these bends. Okay? I'm going to be nice to people. Um, these bends are a bit twisty twisty for the car to be able to cope with.
35 Whoop.
Nope. Nope, that's not >> [laughter] >> All right, maybe 30. Oh, come on. There we go. Let's try 30.
Curvature assist active It's trying to turn before we get to the apex, which is bonkers. We down to 22 mph around that one.
Which isn't great, really.
So, it's a 60 limit and I'm doing 30.
Let's speed up a little bit. But then there's a more twist up here where we'll have to slow it back down again.
35.
30.
Stay at 30 for the next couple.
Wow. Starter It It's not just that it's the speed that it's going at. It's the It's where it's turning in, which is really strange. It's turning in early to the point where it's hitting the double white lines in the center, and then it's having to re-correct itself because it's doing it wrong, which is really weird.
It's like, you know, turn into the apex. Don't turn that early because if you turn that early, you're only going to have to correct, and then you get into a right old mess.
And it is doing these okay. It's just we're doing them at learner driver speed.
Right.
I think I'm going to 40 now.
As we clear the watershed and we start dropping into Saddleworth.
Danger.
I love this part of the world. I really do.
Absolutely adore it.
Wouldn't want to live here anymore. But, um yeah, a little bit too close to him.
So, we'll do a violent disengagement.
I'm going to knock it off.
So, although the other guy technically had the right of way because we were already in the section that was restricted, we can keep going. Again, how How do you How do you teach road knowledge like that to the computer?
Because it's not so much what the laws of the land are, just in terms of the way that people actually drive. Yeah?
So, I'm not entirely sure how you teach that.
And this should be absolutely fine at 20 mph. [laughter] So, that's good.
>> [snorts] >> But, yeah, we can just trundle our way down into Upper Mill.
And then maybe we've got some traffic lights coming up ahead.
Stopping for green lights. Well, stopping for traffic control. It says use accelerator to continue. Yeah, I'll do that when we get there.
We're not quite there yet. I suspect I'm going to have to disengage before I even get to the lights cuz we're going to have to go around the bus, aren't we?
Yep.
Okay.
Thought so.
So, I could put it back on, but there's a Again, there's a van uh parked half up on the pavement, so I'd only have to switch it off.
Let's get past him and then we'll stick it back on.
Do it uh now.
But, because I've still got my foot on the throttle, it knows to go through the lights, which is why the line is green rather than red. You have to have that little dab of throttle just to confirm that you want to go through.
It's mad, but now.
Again, every time it suddenly slows down, I'm then thinking, "Why? What?"
Now, let's treat um Greenfield that we're coming into now is going to be >> [laughter] >> is going to be properly entertaining.
Um yeah. And I'm going to try I am going to try. I've got to keep my streak going, and so far my streak has been Ooh, about 100 m.
>> [laughter] >> Until I have to switch it off now.
Woohoo!
Hey, it'll do it wrong-sided. So, I'm all the way out for these parked cars, and it has engaged, but it's engaged for RIGHT-HAND DRIVE RUNNING.
>> [laughter] >> OKAY.
That's interesting.
It doesn't know which side of the road we drive on, apparently.
So, we're now in a 50 limit.
Let's stick it to 50 and be have my speed moderated by the guy in front of me. This often can be the good thing. Somebody ahead does the braking for the bends, and then you just follow them.
He's making a bit of a hash of this, but it's mainly because it can't turn the wheel enough. So, you can definitely do the speed that he's doing, as you can see. I cannot, so we'll hold it back just a little bit as we go through the wiggles. Maybe try 45.
Now back down to 40.
I did say I wouldn't be making extensive use of the right-hand scroll wheel.
And I am.
It's just about just about coping with these at 40. Um I think I would be sweeping up to 35. I would be sweeping across the uh sweeping across the lane a little bit to help it and get uh around some of these in terms of just apex to apex, but obviously it's not doing that. So, we'll do we're doing 35 now in a 50, and you can see the guy is not exactly going fast, but he's now dropping me, so we'll go 40.
Uh I think actually these open out a little bit. So, let's go to 45.
A little bit more sweeping up here.
>> [snorts] >> Until we get up here.
45.
Drop to 40.
Yeah, I'd be over there.
I wonder why the car isn't.
Goes to 45 briefly and then we'll have to drop to probably 35 for this one up ahead.
Maybe 30 actually. 35.
He's pulled off. 35.
Woah! What was he doing then?
>> [laughter] >> Why?
The guy was in the other lane. He wasn't a threat.
Oh dear. Right, let's go to 50.
There is one bend at the top we'll have to slow for actually. So, let's go to 45.
And I know this is the full self-driving capability version rather than the full self-driving supervised version, but you have to supervise regardless of which one you're in just in case it does the stupid. And I know there are people say, "Oh, my FSD always does everything perfectly." And then there's example after example after example after example after example on Twitter where it doesn't. So, I don't believe the mine is perfect claims because we know it isn't.
It's just waiting for the next example of the stupid. So, we're going to have to disengage cuz he's partly even his bum sat out and I'm going to have to cross the white line slightly. Thanks very much, mate.
Uh Anyway.
Oh, no. I had a disengagement. Trauma.
This is so much less fun than I would have driving the car.
This is actually a fun road. Uh and it's been turned into not fun by the fact that I have to keep faffing around with my very skittish nervous nervous learner driver.
>> [laughter] >> Right. So, we're in a 50 and we are about to go into a national speed limit, so we're going to 60.
Uh 60's probably pushing it a little bit in a few places up here, but we'll set the speed to that anyway, and then we'll pull it back. But, you can see you can see the state of the road at least for the final section of road in the west.
Bloody hell.
Boing.
So, this is another question that I want to raise. The other version of FSD, never mind the speed limits, right, or obstacles, is it good at reading the undulations in the road, yeah? So, where as an example down here, I can see it dipping and banging. Now, I I look at these and I'm like, these are okay, but I also can spot where they're not okay and where you really do need a good dab of brakes, yeah? Where you get the dips where there is a whole load of scrape marks on the tarmac where somebody has done a tank slapper in the bottom of it and scraped their sump. Can the car read those because I can.
It's a valid question. All of the stuff that I've seen on FSD seems to have been on largely largely smooth tarmacs roads, yeah? How good is it at recognizing undulating crud where it's just bouncing up and down and some of them you really need to go slower despite the fact that there's nothing in front of you. It's a valid question. Let me know in the comments.
And as for the with FSD you can sit back and admire the scenery. Well, I mean it's broadly doing the same as the other version of FSD and I can I can look to my side and lift a little bit, but I'm far more nervous about having to watch the road ahead and anticipate the things that it's not anticipating.
It's not quite as not quite as sit here and do a crossword as some people might be thinking.
Okay, we are dropping into HomeLink.
Right, there's no one behind me. So, I'm going to show you what happens when you approach a green traffic light and don't do anything. There's no one behind me.
>> [laughter] >> I'm it's only now going cuz I'm applying throttle.
Right?
You tell me the value >> [laughter] >> of that. You tell me the value, right, of what we just saw there.
It stops on a green light.
Now, I know there are going to be people who say, "But Ian, that's the regulations." Fine, the regulations require you to confirm the action. But given that it's utterly utterly pointless, why is it even added on?
Okay? What is the purpose in adding that functionality on when it is effectively unusable? And for all of those out there who are wondering what the differences were between enhanced autopilot and full self-driving capability, it's that. The only difference between EAP and FSDC is that.
So, I have paid 49 quid to subscribe to full self-driving for a month.
And it's only 49 quid because I've already purchased enhanced autopilot.
And the only thing that I have bought with my 49 quid, apart from the ability to say I'm running FSDC for all of these videos, is the car now stops at green traffic lights. That's the only thing that your extra money pays for. And this has been the scam of FSD for a long, long time. They Now, it will engage now, >> [snorts] >> but actually, let's try it.
Nope, we're going to have to go around the man and his hoses.
Yeah, there's an edge case for you. What do you do when you've got a man standing partway in the road and water hoses running across it?
>> [laughter] >> There's an edge case for you. Now, then, I'm going to have to disengage because I need to get a bit closer into the wall than the system is particularly comfortable with. To be honest, I'm not particularly comfortable with it, either.
But, as you can see, although the white line is over there, this is two-way traffic that needs to be able to get past these permanently parked vehicles.
There's always some vehicle parked here, even if it's not these ones.
But, let's leave it running.
Okay, we'll go to 60.
Well, I say we'll go to 60, we won't.
I'm going to cap it at well, 40, actually.
>> [laughter] >> And even there, 40's too fast for it to be able to make these turns. I think 35's is okay. 30 is probably okay for the next one or even 25. Hang on. Let's have a go.

So, it's a 50 limit, but we ain't getting around this bend at 50.
So, I'm going to leave it at 40.

That was okay. I say you can definitely flick that one at 40. We'll go to 50.
And then, I think I'm going to select 40 for this bend coming up, actually. So, let's cap it at 45.

It's turning really, really, really early. What do we get to? 20 Bloody hell. 24.

But, I didn't disengage. Did you see that?
All of you All of you Teslarati who were like, "You should never, ever, ever, ever disengage. Keep your streak going."
I didn't.
And, as I understand it, where they're doing their I never intervene on FSD goof, they're using the speed profiles and changing them or saying something about parking or whatever. So, if they can intervene without disengaging and say they're not intervening, then I can play the max speed control like a good'un.
Bloody hell. 25 round there. That's ridiculous.
I can play the speed control like a good'un and not disengage.
No one's behind me, by the way, which is why I'm letting it do this. And if there was someone coming the other way and me heading towards the white line, it was going to be a problem. I wouldn't let it. I'm not completely mad.

This is, by the way, just while we're doing this, this is so much harder and so much much more stressful than if I just drove the car.

The straight that's a 60, actually. You can't do 60 through the bottom. Ooh, 40 suddenly. Right, fine.
I wonder why they suddenly put a restriction in down here. You see this bridge that we're coming up to, not the bridge over the top. There's a restricted clearance bridge down here.
This is a 60, or it was, and you absolutely can bottom out. You see all the scrape marks?

Boing, boing. That is why they put a speed limit on it, I think.
But, do you remember earlier on when I was saying that can the other version of FSD judge where the road is going to compress the suspension too much and there's a risk of you bottoming out?
That's exactly what I'm talking about.
And obviously a lot of drivers can't and haven't, hence all of the scrub marks.
But, even so, yeah, anything like this, um it's going to be fascinating to watch the other FSD manage to get down here where you've got the gap is constantly changing depending on how wide the car is and how far out that they've actually parked, yeah?
Constantly changing. So, it's not like it can apply the same algorithm. And I have seen some videos of it in driving around Amsterdam with people and bikes and things. That looks That's great.
That's a test. This is a different test.
Again, I will be doing those tests once the other FSD is available here to replace this FSD.
Not sure what it's braking for. No. What What What What That's >> [laughter] >> That was not a line.
That was a That was a piece of tarmac that's been refilled. It was like, wait.
What? That is just doing the same thing again. It's seeing It's seeing different shades of tarmac as being stop lines or some nonsense. I mean, >> [laughter] >> and you kind of think, why are we slowing down? And then suddenly you realize and it's like, oh, that's why we're slowing down because it it's Dear me.
Right. But, then when there's an actual line painted across, it didn't see it as a line.
You tell me. There was a There was a a line there for switchable traffic lights for the fire station and it didn't see it as a line even though it was a line painted it Whereas before, there was no line. It was literally they'd just done a bit of tarmac repair and it doesn't see it. Yeah? Why is this gone to green without me pressing anything?
Why is that any different to the other ones? I didn't touch the throttle.
I didn't touch the throttle. Why was that different to the other ones?
>> [laughter] >> Oh, [snorts] it is consistently Again, we're on green. Why is this on green? I haven't done anything. I haven't told it to go. It's just choosing.
So, why was it going to stop on the other ones on red and yet on this one it's fine?
Don't get it.
Really don't get it.
So, what do we make of that? Well, all I can say is I had more fun driving that car to go on those roads with me driving than I have doing that. But, it was an interesting experiment and I am going to call it an experiment because I'm not recommending that really anybody goes to do that. But, it does show that this version of full self-driving is capable of driving on those kind of roads most of the time. But, it is only most of the time. It's not going to do it all of the time. It is quite literally a driver assistance system after all rather than anything else. But, the truth is the other version of full self-driving is also level two driver assistance regardless of what some people are saying. And that's not according to me.
That's according to Tesla. So, here's where it is. For the time being, I think there are some advantages to be had in subscribing to this version of full self-driving. But, we haven't finished there. I have got a lot more testing still to do. And I'm having to move because you can't actually see my car.
I've stood here out of the wind hoping that you can actually hear me, but I've got a lot more testing still to do on this car with full self-driving capability, this version, not the other version of full self-driving.
