Added:Hello everyone. Welcome back to our grade 6 science class. Have you ever accidentally mixed sand with water? Or maybe you've seen your parents use a strainer while cooking pasta or washing rice? Have you ever wondered once things are mixed together, can we still separate them? Well, the answer is yes.
Today we are going to discover different techniques used to separate mixtures and learn why these techniques are very useful in our daily lives. So prepare your science notebook, sharpen your observation skills and let's begin.
At the end of this lesson, you will be able to demonstrate various techniques in separating mixtures such as decantation, winnowing, scooping, picking, evaporation, filtering, sething, and using magnets. Explain the benefits of each mixture separation technique in preparing useful products.
Before we start, let's have a quick review. Can you still remember the difference between a mixture and a solution? A mixture is made when two or more substances are combined, but they do not chemically change.
Some mixtures are homogeneous where everything looks evenly mixed. Others are heterogeneous where you can still see the different parts.
Let's look at these examples. Glass of sand and water. Glass of salt water.
Glass of oil and water. Can you identify which one is a solution and which ones are mixtures?
[music] Salt dissolves in water forming a solution. Sand and water remain separate. Oil and water also remain separate because oil floats on top.
Since these substances remain different, we can separate them using different methods.
Imagine your mother is preparing rice.
Sometimes there are tiny stones mixed with the rice. Would she throw everything away?
Of course not. She simply removes the stones. That's already one technique in separating mixtures.
Today we will learn eight important techniques. Decantation, filtration, sething, picking, winnowing, scooping, evaporation, using magnets. Let's explore each one.
Look closely. The oil stays on top while the water stays below. Why? Because oil is lighter than water. They do not mix.
If we slowly pour the top liquid into another container without disturbing the lower liquid, we separate them.
Decantation is the process of carefully pouring one liquid away from another liquid or from a solid that has settled at the bottom.
Everyday examples: oil and water.
Washing rice. Muddy water left to settle before pouring the clear water. Water mixed with sand.
I let the sand settle at the bottom. Now I slowly pour the clean water into another container. That's decantation.
Simple, right?
Suppose you have muddy water. How can you remove the dirt? Can you simply scoop it out? Not really. Instead, we use a filter.
The filter allows water to pass through while trapping the solid particles. This method is called filtration. Filtration separates an insoluble solid from a liquid using a filtering material.
Examples: Making coffee. Water filters.
Separating muddy water. Filtering fruit juice.
As the muddy water passes through the filter paper, look, the dirt stays behind. The water becomes much clearer.
Amazing, isn't it?
Have you ever seen someone sift flour before baking? That's sething. A sie has tiny holes. Small particles pass through. Large particles stay behind.
Seeing separates particles according to their size. Examples: flour and lumps, sand and stones, rice and pebbles, gravel and fine sand.
I place flour mixed with mango seeds into a strainer. Now I gently shake it.
The flour falls through. The mango seeds stay on top. That's seing.
Picking. This is probably the easiest separation technique. Instead of using special equipment, we simply use our hands or sometimes tongs. Picking is separating visible objects by hand.
Examples: removing stones from rice, sorting colored buttons, picking spoiled fruits, removing vegetables from soup. Whenever the objects are easy to recognize, picking is the best method.
Let's learn another useful separation technique called winnowing. Have you ever seen farmers throw grains into the air? It may look like they're playing, but they're actually separating materials.
Winnowing is the process of separating lighter materials from heavier ones with the help of the wind. When the mixture is tossed into the air, the lighter particles such as husks or chaff are blown away by the wind while the heavier grains fall back into the container.
Examples: rice grains and husks, corn kernels and dried leaves, wheat and chaff. Winnowing works best when there is enough wind or when a fan is used to imitate the wind.
The next technique is scooping.
Sometimes one material is large enough to be easily removed using a scoop or ladle. Scooping is the process of removing an easily recognized substance from a mixture using a scoop, ladle, or similar tool.
Examples: removing floating leaves from a pond, scooping ice cubes from water, removing floating insects from a container of water. This technique is quick and simple when the unwanted material is visible and easy to reach.
Now, let's discover evaporation.
Imagine you have a mixture of salt and water. Can we use a filter? No, because the salt has completely dissolved in the water.
[music] Instead, we heat the mixture. As the water gets hotter, it changes into water vapor and disappears into the air. The salt stays behind.

Examples: Producing salt from sea water, drying wet clothes, recovering crystals from a salt solution.
Did you know that many salt farms in the Philippines produce salt using evaporation from sunlight? That's science helping people every day.
Our last separation technique is using magnets. Magnets attract objects made of iron, steel, nickel, and cobalt. If we mix paper clips and sand, we can easily separate them using a magnet.
Using magnets is a separation technique that removes magnetic materials from non-magnetic materials.
Examples: iron nails and sand, paper clips and rice, metal scraps in recycling centers. This technique is widely used in factories and recycling plants to separate metals quickly and efficiently.
Now we've learned eight different techniques in separating mixtures.
Decantation, filtration, sething, picking, winnowing, scooping, evaporation, using magnets.
Each technique has a special purpose.
The best technique depends on the properties of the materials in the mixture. Let's now see how these techniques make our daily lives easier.
Decantation. Separating oil from water.

Filtration. Water purification. Coffee maker.
Seeing. Baking cakes. Separating sand and gravel.
