[00:01:01]Reports [music] suggested that armed SS forces were moving through the region looking for enemies and prisoners. At the same time, some German Wehrmacht soldiers had turned against the SS and wanted to surrender to the allies instead of continuing the fight.

[00:01:17]They believed the war was lost and saw no reason to sacrifice more lives for a collapsing regime. A small group of American soldiers led by Captain John Jack Lee joined forces with German Major Josef Gangl and his troops to defend the castle from an approaching SS attack.

[00:01:38]Together, the Americans, German soldiers, and even some of the French prisoners prepared the castle's defenses.

[00:02:06]Despite being heavily outnumbered, they refused to surrender. The battle quickly became desperate. [music] Ammunition ran low while the defenders waited for reinforcements to arrive.

[00:02:17]During the fighting, [music] Major Gangl was killed while trying to protect one of the French prisoners. As the hours passed, the situation became critical.

[00:02:26]The defenders feared they would soon be overrun, but they continued holding their positions, determined to survive until help arrived. Eventually, American reinforcements arrived and forced the SS troops to retreat, ending the battle.
