During the final days of World War II in May 1945, American soldiers led by Captain John Lee and German Wehrmacht troops under Major Josef Gangl formed an unprecedented alliance to defend Castle Itter in Austria, where French prisoners including politicians and resistance figures were held by the Nazis. As Nazi Germany collapsed and SS forces moved through the region seeking enemies, these former enemies fought together against the SS, with Major Gangl sacrificing his life to protect prisoners. The battle ended when American reinforcements arrived and forced the SS to retreat, marking one of the few documented instances where American and German soldiers fought side by side against the Nazis.

The Battle Where Americans and Germans Fought Together#WW2 #CastleItter #BattleOfCastleItter#viralAdded:
In 1945, American soldiers and German troops fought together side by side against the [music] SS inside a medieval castle.
By May 1945, Nazi Germany was collapsing on all fronts.
>> [music] >> Allied forces were pushing deep into German territory while chaos spread across the country. [music] But during the final days of World War II, one of the strangest battles in history took place inside an Austrian castle called Castle [music] Itter. The castle was being used as a prison for important French captives held by the Nazis, including former politicians, generals, >> [music] >> and resistance figures.
As Germany began collapsing, the prisoners feared they would be executed by fanatical SS troops before the war ended.
>> [music] >> Outside the castle, the situation was becoming increasingly dangerous.
Nazi authority was breaking down across Austria, and isolated SS units were still determined to continue fighting despite Germany's imminent defeat.
Reports [music] suggested that armed SS forces were moving through the region looking for enemies and prisoners. At the same time, some German Wehrmacht soldiers had turned against the SS and wanted to surrender to the allies instead of continuing the fight.
They believed the war was lost and saw no reason to sacrifice more lives for a collapsing regime. A small group of American soldiers led by Captain John Jack Lee joined forces with German Major Josef Gangl and his troops to defend the castle from an approaching SS attack.
It was an alliance that would have seemed impossible only months earlier.
Together, the Americans, German soldiers, and even some of the French prisoners prepared the castle's defenses.
Weapons were distributed, defensive positions were established, and everyone waited for the attack they knew was coming.
>> [music] >> Soon, SS forces surrounded Castle Itter and launched assaults against the defenders. [music] Gunfire echoed through the castle walls while American and German soldiers fought together from windows, courtyards, and defensive positions.
Despite being heavily outnumbered, they refused to surrender. The battle quickly became desperate. [music] Ammunition ran low while the defenders waited for reinforcements to arrive.
During the fighting, [music] Major Gangl was killed while trying to protect one of the French prisoners. As the hours passed, the situation became critical.
The defenders feared they would soon be overrun, but they continued holding their positions, determined to survive until help arrived. Eventually, American reinforcements arrived and forced the SS troops to retreat, ending the battle.
