Sibling jealousy and envy are natural human emotions that arise from differences in achievements, success, and the attention or praise received. These feelings often stem not from the success itself but from the love, support, and recognition that successful siblings receive. Understanding that these emotions are normal and can be managed through communication, self-awareness, and recognizing one's own worth helps siblings navigate these complex relationships. Parents can contribute to sibling rivalry through unintentional favoritism, where different children receive varying levels of attention based on their unique needs, personalities, or circumstances.

McKenzie has been under pressure from DA and Action SA parliamentarians to explain the are the 31 million rand expenditure rather. He says any evidence to suggest the money was misappropriated should be submitted to parliament or the auditor general for scrutiny. Lindseay Dentlinger reports. A third of the department's expenditure and amount of 10 million rand was spent on exhibition spaces in Mexico and the use of a service provider to set these up as well as cultural and fan activities on the sidelines of the World Cup matches which included the participation of 30 artists. An amount of 7.8 million rand was spent on the official trips, accommodation and other travel allowances for Minister Gate and McKenzie, two support staff, the director general and a project team comprising 14 members. Happy Monday on this 20th of July.
Congratulations to Spain on winning the World Cup for 2026.
I must say this is one of the most interesting World Cups we have ever experienced in our lives. and maybe you want to comment a thing or two on that, but all I can say is the funniest moment was the FIFA president running to try and move Donald Trump out of the celebration and he ended up just leaving him there. But there's a caption um on one of these uh publications where you see them. There's confetti and pyro techniques all over the place and the caption says FIFA president trying to tell Donald Trump that he's not part of the Spanish team.
Ah very very entertaining but congratulations also to the runners up that is Argentina. Coming up on the show today I want to find out from all of you around sibling envy and jealousy. Have you ever felt jealous of your siblings success? It could be how well they did at school. It could be as an adult. Um, have you found that u maybe they were jealous of you? What happened? Did it ever get resolved? And how did that impact your relationship with your sibling? And maybe also add, do you think your parents contributed to any kind of jealousy or envy um within the siblinghood? I'm not even going to say rivalry because we want to be very specific. We talk about jealousy and envy. Movies and what to stream.
Adelaide Moyang will join us for that.
Let us know what you are watching, what you'd recommend or say do not watch at all. And then travel feature. We talk about the rise of culinary travel. are the trip just to go and eat. Gabby Brandani, writer and travel correspondent. On the second half of the show, it's our parenting and parents feature. We actually are talking about parental favoritism and navigating accidental favoritism and um you can also start to share your thoughts on that. We'll be joined by Yogeni Packer who's a qualified counseling psychologist and head of the South African College of Applied Psychology.
We wrap up with Dr. Chris Smith and our and our I nearly said consumer rights feature and our naked scientist and we'd love to hear from all of you with your science related questions. >> Let's walk the talk.
There are sibling differences all the time.
Irrespective of the fact that you may have been in the womb at the same time, right? You will always have some kind of differences. Meaning your marks will never be the same. Your achievements will never be the same. And many come from homes where you are praised for for doing well. Like you're not necessarily praised for character traits like he's so kind. The emphasis will be on 90 or this, right? And then as you get older, you are praised for being successful.
You are praised for being a person that is making money. But what happens now when you envy your siblings success or them doing well? And maybe if you uh uh uh really look closely, it's not necessarily that you envy the success.
Maybe what it is that you envy is the praise or maybe you envy the love that and support that the person gets. But I'd love to hear from all of you with regards to jealousy amongst siblings.
Now, one well-known sibling couple, if I want to call it that, a couple of siblings, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Jake Gyllenhaal. Jake Gyllenhaal, massive Hollywood A-listister, actor, acted in Brokeback Mountain, and so many other things. And he became really, really successful very quickly. And Maggie Gyllenhaal, his sister, who's also a really great actress, had shared and spoken about how sibling envy actually strained her relationship with Jake for years after his career took off much faster than hers did. And she went on to say, "I spent a long time being separate from my brother. We had to work through some sibling envy. It's a real thing in our family and in Hollywood." So while casting Jake, as in she was casting her own brother in The Bride 24, a film from this year, she went on to say that she hesitated because only recently had their relationship healed, saying, "I waited until I was absolutely sure. I remember asking him and tearing up alone in this hotel room because it meant so much to me." And many of us might look from the outside and think, "What? Why would there be sibling rival rivalry if you're both talented?" And I think about famous siblings. I'm sure all the Jackson brothers were regularly asked like, "Hey, are you jealous of your brother Michael H."
when Beyonce's career was blowing up and her sister is also a performing artist um who I think has uh uh earned the title of standing on her own Solange without having to be referred to as Beyonce's sister. But those were the conversations that constant thing of are you living in the shadow of a successful sibling or the one that everybody looks up to? And it doesn't have to be entertainment. I'll obviously use entertainment references because we are all quite familiar with them. But what has happened when you have had to deal with those experiences or feelings of feeling some kind of way about your sibling doing well? Now, I can relate in the following sense. I um I was the person that broke out first, if I'm going to call it that, amongst my siblings and I. Um, and because my work is so public, it will always look like I am more successful than my siblings, even though that's not necessarily the case. Now, I can tell you um that these feelings of envy or jealousy are complex, and it doesn't mean you're not happy for the person. It doesn't mean you you wouldn't have wished it on anybody else. It just is the reality of being human. What I can tell you is when my younger brother was graduating and um all of us were there as the family, the one thing I felt envious of is that he ticked that box for my parents. That box and it's not to say I was going to study accounting. I was not. I was not jealous about how much he how hard he had to work. I was not jealous of any of those things. But that moment moment gradu graduation photos graduation. I sat and I thought yo guys it doesn't matter how successful I am in my career. It doesn't matter how many awards, how many accolades I get, I will never be able to do that thing. And I've jokingly said to my family, listen, when you guys I get a you want a degree, I'll give you guys my honorary doctorate when I get it one day. But I can so relate to that feeling and in no way judging anybody who has expressed any kind of those feelings. So I want to hear from all of you when it comes to feeling envious or jealous or some type of way about a sibling's success. 0183072 and the WhatsApp line 072721702.

Many of us take taking a deep breath for granted.
But for some infants with RSV, every breath is a battle. Respiratory sensitial virus is a contagious virus that can lead to serious illnesses including lung infections. Fortunately, protection for infants against RSV is now available in South Africa. Ask your healthcare provider about keeping your baby protected during their first RSV season. Big advances in health are happening right here in South Africa.
Local researchers are studying a new TB vaccine called M72 that could help stop people from getting seriously ill. And programs like Coinb are helping men living with HIV overcome stigma, start treatment, and stay on it through peer support and private chat guidance. It's South Africans helping shape the future of global health. Supported by the Gates Foundation for 25 years, partners of human potential. This is what progress sounds like. At South African Airways, we've added more aircraft to the runway, increased our flights from just over 1,000 in 2021 to over 24,000 last year, and we continue to add more destinations and routes. >> Your voice, >> your life, >> your afternoon radio >> on 702 afternoons >> with 20 minutes after 1:00 and we are talking about envy or jealousy of your siblings.
They're smart. their success. Maybe it is the praise that they got. How did you deal with that envy? Were you able to um salvage your relationship despite the envy or in spite of the envy? I'd love to hear from you. 0183072 and the WhatsApp line 072721702.
We've already used some examples like Beyonce Nolles and Solange or Nolles Carter and Solange Nolles that are in entertainment. But let's also um see in other spaces in South Africa. I mean you have a Kanye bao and a Lassu who are quite well known. Liz came up much later than Kanye Bao has but now we can already see that they have established each of their own things. Look at uh the Mata siblings actress Nom Zam Bata and Zamani Bata who are both actors. Um and then you look at so many other spaces.
Look at the Ranaka family. I mean they figured it out. Okay, they're all kind of doing their own thing individually and continue to support one another. I think about Venus and Serena Williams about how there was a little bit of competition, just enough competition for this the the the Williams sisters um to get so so good but they fully supported one another. Is this something you experienced and how did you experience 0183072 and the WhatsApp line 072721702.
I don't know if some of you have heard of the Malule siblings who are currently sitting in senior positions at some of South Africa's largest institutions.
Tagani Basani and Rifil Malule who won.
Takani has been the auditor general of South Africa since 2020. Basani was the first black female CEO of a bank after taking over at African bank and then Rifilway now holds a senior marketing position at Discovery. All of them came through from Sosanguve and from if I am correct and it is the Malulea family that I think it is then um we used to go to their spa goshas and a very very successful business family but sometimes it can be rivalry but maybe you use it as motivation and inspiration. Here are some of your messages coming through.
Bong on Facebook says, "Never. I in fact celebrate their wins as if they were mine." Lo says, "More like the jealousy is coming from them to me." And I mean, how do you even assess that someone is jealous of you? What do you see that says this person is jealous? How do you know a person is envious of you of you?
Uh, Tissawe says, "I'm the last born, so I don't even have to have the uh hm, let me try this again. I'm the last born, so I don't even have the resume to be more to do more than them. And the more successful they are, the more they can spoil me as the baby in the family."
Clever. Putting your energy in the right place. Pomeza says, "I'm glad I don't have siblings. No competition in the house. Instead, every day your parents pray for you to have a long life. Alex says it's actually vice versa.
They even plot my death. Tried it, left me to die, but then I'm too strong for that. They have been asking for forgiveness since then, but I'm also looking for a reason. And nobody is ready to come up with a proper explanation. So, yeah, life goes on.
Alex, your siblings tried to kill you.
Y Joel says, "No, I can never ever be jealous of someone else, especially my own blood, because if someone is doing well, it inspires me and motivates me that my turn is coming. I have had an incident uh where I reacted in a terrible way. But then I introspected and quickly had a conversation with my sibling to let him know that my reaction was not meant for him and I am sorry. I explained myself my personal frustrations and he understood. I can never be jealous of someone else. It is just ridiculous. Anel says, "Nah, nobody in this whole world will ever have something I shall be jealous of. If they flourish, I celebrate with them." The only way you reach that peace in life is when you know your own worth and appreciate what you have. And says, "Yes, they are graduating and getting jobs whereas I have a qualification and I am struggling to get one single job to enable me to save up, acquire assets and contribute at home. Thank you in Kosinati for being real." Um I I I I I think two things can be true at the same time especially if the feeling is when is it my turn. Another one says jealous Monica says jealousy is the root of witchcraft. Don't make it normal but I blame the parents adults relatives. I have said this before I think on this show that many people say when siblings don't don't get along you must blame the parents for that because somewhere somehow even if unended um they treat the kids differently in a way that makes some feel less than others or not enough like others and we will be having that conversation later on in our parenting and parents feature uh Abum Tuku says, "I was jealous of my brother's height and later I understood that you can't have it all. We are all blessed in different ways." Uh Pelisa says, "This question needs maturity to be answered. It's not about being a witch. Jealousy is natural. Maybe you felt your life was stagnant and perhaps you are the first born. Hopefully those that did have overcome it." Manga goes on to say, "I was jealous of his success cuz he had to get all the beautiful ladies whilst I was I don't know if I can read this on air."
Um I I need to think of a better word to to to read this message on air. I will come back to what Manga had to say. But in essence, he's saying he would get the beautiful ladies, the brother, and then he would just um settle for whatever was left over basically is what he's saying. Goes on to say, I confronted him about it and he stopped giving me pocket money. Mind you, I'm 40. I'm 40. He's 27.
But what? I'm so confused.
you.
Okay, I'm I'm a little bit confused, but I I I'm going to try and think of it this way. I'm going to take the woman out of the picture and think about it from the just success perspective. I can see how at 40 you could feel a type of way if your 27year-old sibling is doing much better than you and you've had more time. Cebuiso says, "Some siblings think you are jealous of their success up until you're successful and then they become bitter. Here are some of your voice notes on 072721702."
>> Afternoon, Leo and team. You know, the thing of sibling rivalry is so painful and it's so difficult because um we also experience a lot of that in our family.
Now as adults we are trying as siblings we are trying to navigate past that but the scars still remain and you know when you are the sibling who is often put on a pedestal or whatever it's almost like you become um less human because now everyone expects you to go above and beyond and when normal human things happen to you your siblings will be like oh can this also happen to you but to I'm human at the end of the day can I just get genuine empathy without feeling like in the back of your mind you are giggling like that will teach you. I mean it's it's such a very difficult thing and it's even it's it's amplified so much more when you have parents who are also contributing in a bad way to to to this thing flourishing etc etc but I as adults we are just trying our best but you can see that there are definite wounds in the relationships as siblings because you are just never sure if that um quote unquote jealousy is really gone and if the empathy you receive believe is truly genuine and sincere.
>> Now we have a it's a dilemma. So um we just finished renovating at home. Now there's this wall we uh my mother wants to put like pictures. Uh just to give you a background, my mother loves books.
I mean she has I don't know how many postgress she has now. Uh we we uh have two siblings. Okay. I've graduated multiple times. Uh the youngest has recently graduated. Uh now the middle child uh yeah he never liked books. So now my mother doesn't want to put graduation pictures on that wall and and like exclude him. So so I was discussing it with him like I mean you want to but now he's like you're accommodating someone that did not like books. So what are you going to do? It's kind of not fair though. But yeah, that's the dilemma we have now at home.
>> I've just joined the conversation, you know, at a later stage, but the other sibling that I admire is I'm not so sure what's the the relationship between and um the governor reserve the governor of the reserve bank. Apologies, I've forgotten his name. I'm driving.
>> Oh, you're referring to So, from what I understand, they're not direct siblings. They are like cousins or something like that. From what I understand, but I stand to be corrected.
It's just after 1:30.
Time for your latest Eyewitness News headlines. Good afternoon. Thanks, Good afternoon. The Johannesburg High Court has rejected an application to have the trial of alleged crime boss of us Madalala and his co-acused stand down during periods when accused number one Moshana's lawyer is unavailable. >> 24 minutes to 2:00. We're going to quickly wrap up the conversation we've been having around sibling uh jealousy and envy for success for uh doing well for the smarts. Um and there's one that says I wish to remain anonymous. I'm the first born, the only one with degree qualifications. My three siblings only have diplomas. So my other brother used to say even in his blue overalls, he still earns a higher salary than graduates. Y that is deep on so many levels. Y another one says now I'm the last one at home and my mom said I should remain in the house and let mine my elder sister is fine but the one in the middle criticizes any renovation I'm doing in the family home uh from the east rant here incredibly interesting and difficult topic sibling jealousy would be interesting to hear how the Mazo sisters have dealt with it and if it was ever a challenge between the two of them hm would be interesting as well but from what I have observed um knowing all three of them in different ways they've been quite supportive of one another like they generally are very very uh supportive of one another all of them are performing artists I guess it runs in the genes and in the family and the team mine is the other way around my brother envying me and very jealous of me and our mother is on his side. Here are your voice notes on 072721702.
>> We must take success of others as a motivation to us all. If I have a brother who become successful, it's it's one for the family, it's one for him, it's one less problems for the others, but he can also be helpful to those he wants to help. uh and then it's it's it's one of a burden to those who are supporting him that means it's minus one he can also continue with their lives people who are jealous and use it wrongly I take them as sick because you cannot be sick that somebody else is successful take it as a motivation and move forward if you achieve things before me that's was God's plan who am I to change that who am I to control what God has planned for us because my time is coming so we need to use this thing of jealousy in a in a fun manner to say before me but my time is coming.
>> Good day. It's KG here but not start the clock. You know I believe we every human being has um jealousy in them. Every being actually I would think even animals if you look at them maybe you're feeding two dogs. one would be jealous of the other one and leave his own plate and go eat on the other one's plate and then it breaks out into a fight. I believe as humans we all have jealousy within us. It's what you do with that jealousy that becomes a problem. Right?
So it's either someone close to you is doing great and you're jealous of them and you go out and do even better or someone next to you is doing great and you know but yeah I think jealousy is within all of us. It really depends on what you do with it um that becomes either problematic or or or great um for you and for the future. Thanks. Bye.
Oh, it can be a very touchy and sensitive subject, but I think that was the perfect voice note to end it on that it is human to be jealous. We all have it in us. The question is what do you do about it? Do you put it aside? Do you now make the person feel bad about their achievement? Are they are there a person that now can't tell you by the way I got another promotion?
These are the things we need to think about. Thank you for your messages, voice notes, and calls.

I just want to say for those who are watching the the live YouTube stream, okay, I got my Spain shirt now before the World Cup began >> because you knew >> because I knew and also because I thought it was the best design. I know it's going to seem like, yeah, I'm telepathic and I'm analytic. No, I literally thought this shirt was the cutest one. So, I got the shirt not knowing that they would be the winners of the FIFA World Cup. And what's so funny is I actually got to watch the game yesterday in a cinema at City Center. They actually have these very cool sports cinema experiences. So we actually were all in there and we were all talking and screaming and shouting.
It's just a different cinema experience that I feel like everybody should definitely be a part of. So um Sydney Center, thank you so much. I was able to scream my heart out and also be heartbroken at the same time. It was a really good final. Congratulations to the winner.
>> Aspire.
>> All right. Outside of watching sport.
>> Yes.
>> Okay. Um, let's kick off with the first one.
>> Yes. I wanted to talk about the invite, but I also just wanted to talk about how if anyone wants to see jealousy or sibling rivalry in an interesting dynamic, The Odyssey. I did get to watch it la last week and it was amazing and so far so good. I've got a bunch of interviews that I'm going to be uploading today for you guys to find out what people are saying about the Odyssey, but so far so good. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Um, Christopher Nolan again, what a man. What a director. Just a great job. But definitely something that you guys can go and look out for on uh Movies and Stuff I have got all the interviews and a little snidbits of everything that was happening. So definitely go and catch that. First film that we have to talk about that's coming out this week on Friday the 24th of July is The Invite, right? And this is a film that I don't think a lot of people expected to be a breakout cuz it is a small A24 comedy series. It's actually a remake of the Spanish film The People upstairs uh which is also um adapted in different it's it's adapted in Korean um in French and in in Italian as well. and it's being directed by Olivia Wild, but she's also starring in it as well. Uh we all know her from a directoral standpoint.
She's done really well. She gave us the film Books Smart, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Others may also know her work from uh Don't Worry Darling. But in this particular film, it's her, it's Seth Rogan, who we know from the studio and Knocked Up. It also has Ed uh uh Norton from uh a Fight Club that we all know about, Italian Job, and Penelopey Cruz, which we haven't seen in a while. So, I'm really glad to see her back on screen. And this dynamic essentially of this film is about a couple that's struggling with their marriage, you know, and they invite a very um eccentric, loud, you know, their upstairs neighbor for dinner, but this dinner ends up being the most chaotic situation that they've ever gotten themselves into. And another thing that I also just find so cute is that Olivia Wild actually dedicated um the invite to uh Diane Katon, the late and great Diane Katon in the sense that she feels like a lot of the different films that we all grew up watching, Dian Katon was able to show us women in very different variations and character dynamics that we never quite saw in other ladies. So, it's nice to see number one, a remake done well cuz so far it's it's getting really great reviews and number two something dedicated to women that we all also loved watching growing up.
>> Okay. Then we've got Ride or Die on Prime Video.
>> Right. So, Ride or Die is also something that's quite unique. Essentially, Ride or Die is on Prime uh video and it came out two weeks ago, but it's been getting such great reviews. It's a cool TV series that's actually it's action, it's comedy, it's thriller, it's two friends who've been besties for over 20 years, right? It's starring um Hannah Wington and also um uh Octavia Spencer that we all love and know. Essentially, imagine you've known your friend to be an accountant. Every time you guys catch up, I don't know anything about accounting. If my friend told me, I'd be like, great. Yes, >> by accident you find out that your accountant friend is actually an assassin.
>> Now you were basically caught in what they're doing and now you have to try and find a way to navigate it, but you're also part of what they're doing and you're on a mission with them now.
So you went from your daily job to now finding out that your friend is an assassin and it is hilarious. It also has Bill Nye who I feel like he very he chooses very unique projects to be on and he's also in that think action fighting sequence women being hilarious vulnerable and strong at the same time in a good way and also some really good emotional moments you know friendship trust second chances this show has all of those things if that's your kind of thing definitely go and watch that >> all right then we've got Furious on Disney Plus >> right yeah Furious This is actually a show that's coming out on the 27th, next week, Monday, on Disney. And um it's starring uh uh uh Emmy Rossom, who we all know uh from Shameless. It's been a while since I've seen her like this. I feel like she also does choose very uh different projects, but this is actually a crime thriller. So, essentially, she is an FBI detective agent, Alice Black, and she's on the hunt for a very mysterious and calculating serial killer. But what she did not see happening is that the serial killer is a woman and she's hunting down men. But what they're not trying to what they're not understanding is what exactly is her motive because she's just on a killing spree and it doesn't make sense. But it's a really really nice uh uh crime series. And I suppose it's a woman going after another woman. So you're trying to see who will outsmart who. So far really great reviews. Like I said, it's coming out on Monday on Disney.
Okay. Then we move on to critical but stable. Guys, yo, every time I hear critical but stable, I just remember what we went through as a country >> during critical but stable. Yo. Okay, so that's a local one.
>> Flashbacks to the world.
>> Yes. Yes. All right. That is um Zansi Magic coming up Sunday the 26th of July.
>> Yes.
>> Which is our walk the talk date. Just reminding everybody.
>> Yeah. So actually you can plan your entire day. You can start with the walk and then relax with Critical But >> Exactly.
>> So Critical But Stable um is a drama series, a local uh drama series that's coming out uh like you said on the 26th.
And it's going to be on channel 161 at 8:00. But it's actually a 13th part drama series that follows the life and struggles of Duke, who basically tries to rope his friend into an insurance scam to save his ailing wife and his failing business. I don't know about you, but I feel like, you know, I I can appreciate a good scam if the cause is okay.
>> You can. I I think so, too.
>> I really can forgive. I can >> like if for example, we were stealing our funds back for the country.
Thank you. Then I'm I'm down. I am down for things.
>> But don't steal from from the needy.
Steal from the rich.
>> Don't steal from us the taxpayers.
>> Please. That I I can get behind it. If you know when scamming has a good cause, I can get behind it. But the minute it starts coming for us normal people, I'm like, "Ah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
It's not on." But I do know um that uh uh Lawrence is actually in this as well and we haven't seen him um acting in a while. But it's a really good ensemble.
It also has Fortune Mobella who's actually playing Duke. Um Lawrence's Lawrence Mallea is plays Miz. He's also one of the friends as well. It's a good cast. Um and it's also from the people who gave us Red Ink as well as How to Manifest a Man. So, you know, household productions with a good cast. And it's also nice to just see the struggles of meni.
>> This Oh my gosh. The way you said that, ma'am.
>> No, they also have struggles like the way you >> So that's starting 8:00 p.m. Sunday once magic critical but Steve. >> 8 minutes to two o'clock in our travel feature for today. We talk about the rise of culinary travel. 0183072 the WhatsApp line 07272172.
Gabby Baroni, happy Monday. It sounds like the start of an Eat Pray Love where you just go for the great food.
>> Oh, absolutely.
>> So, what are some of um the the latest trends looking like when it comes to culinary travel?
So maybe starting at the beginning on why food has become such a travel motivator. Food is honestly one of the easiest ways for everyone to connect with the local culture wherever they are. So unlike your museums and your monuments, food engages all five senses.
And also travelers increasingly want experiences they can't necessarily recreate at home. Something that stands out, something that they are going to remember for a very very long time. Now food also tells the story of a destination. So food often reflects the history, sometimes the geography, um climate, the agriculture, the traditions and sometimes even family heritage. So, it really is one of the most incredible elements from a travel perspective, >> especially because once people start sharing the history of why they use specific ingredients, um it also sort of ties it in together in that immersive experiencing so experience. So, let's talk about river cruising. Why is that amazing for those that love food?
>> Yes. So, of of all the ways to travel, so river cruising, we have chatted about it briefly before. um river cruising in Europe, it's perhaps probably one of the most suited ways to really do like a deep culinary exploration of the region.
So whether you're winding through Portugal's wine country, you're sailing uh through Burgundy in France or in Northern Italy, Europe's rivers generally run through the heart of some of the world's most renowned food and wine regions, especially if you're doing um a river cruise with Uni World Boutique River Cruises, for example. So you can stop off at your local market selling fresh produce to the restaurants where signature dishes and secret recipes have been passed down for generations. Um your river cruisers, they get you up close and personal with really really memorable culinary experiences. And and one of the reasons why is that river cruising is a slow form of travel and slow travel and culinary travel actually go hand inand really well. So culinary travel isn't about rushing between the attractions.
It's really about slowing down enough to appreciate where the various ingredients come from. You you briefly mentioned that. So if you look at your enjoying your olive oil in Provence, your port wine in the do valley or even your fresh pasta traditions in northern Italy. So, it really is as much about the destinations and the experiences as it is about the food and slowing down and just enjoying everything at a bit of a slower pace. Let's kick off with France, which is quite a big food destination and there's so much more than just baguette and quason.
>> Absolutely. So France has long captured the world's culinary imagination and river cruising through Burgundy and Provence, it really makes it clear why.
Um even visits to Leon, you can enjoy and savor really really unique um French cuisine. While going to Aignon's famous covered market which which overflows with really beautiful locally grown fruits and vegetables, seafood, cured meats, cheese, artisal bread. um heading over to rural province. It's one of the world's finest olive growing regions where you're likely to learn about traditional olive horiculture and really sample the fruits of the groves at an olive farm which is quite a cool experience.
>> And I think obviously we know that France almost became the hub because we think when a um a chef goes to get trained, it's always in French cuisine and French style. Let us talk Portugal.
>> Portugal, this is probably one of those arts of really unhurried eating. So, Portugal's Doro Valley is it's one of the oldest cultivated landscapes in the world where you really have a front row seat to all of it on a river cruise, for example. So, Porto, which is Portugal's second city after Lisbon, um, and home to the nation's famous port wine. It's really a treasure trove of discoveries for any kind of foodie traveler. Um, thanks to its thriving restaurant scene.
So, you can enjoy a whole bunch of of Portuguese classics, your your stuffed bread, your calderan stew, um, and also the Portuguese iteration of your your creme brulee. And there's a whole bunch of of different Portuguese cuisines that you can enjoy that are unique to this region. We do have a little taste of it in South Africa, but if you want to go as traditionally Portuguese as it gets, um, Porto is probably one of the most beautiful regions for this.
>> We touched on this one, Italy. And what I what I love about Italy is, you know, what you taste in Rome will not be the same um, as what you taste possibly somewhere else within the same country.
>> That's exactly it. And honestly, no country takes its food more seriously than Italy. So whichever part of the country you visit, from your your rustic rural meals and farmers markets to your Michelin starred city restaurant experiences, Italy genuinely is a masterclass in the art of enjoying your food and the joy of food. Um, enjoying a river cruise through the waterways of Northern Italy in particular, it really puts you in the middle of Italy's most underrated food region. So, so if you're thinking cured meats, your rich risottos, your your stuffed pastas like your tortillini duka, um if you venture a little further south, you can discover the secrets of Tuscan cuisine in a cooking class, which is such an incredible experience. Often these cooking classes are done at the homes of people who live in those regions. So, it's something so authentic, so incredible. And this also allows you to explore the local towns and villages to really sample the best of the region's specialtities. Um, and just enjoying food that's been served the exact same way for generations.
>> Um, in terms of a tip when a person is choosing to go on a culinary adventure and they are booking the country, what are some of the things maybe they should be searching or considering?
>> That's a good question. So I think one of the first tips would be what kind of a foodie trip are you looking for? Are you looking for something more on the wine side of things or the the aerif side of things? There are some stunning river cruises that follow that go through the various wine regions specifically. So if that's what you're interested in, that's a good place to start. If you are looking at more foodie focused trips, um what kind of regions are you looking to enjoy mostly? Do you want to focus on on France, on Portugal, on Italy as a starting point? And then just working backwards. A lot of these river cruises have set itineraries where you don't have to even think. You can sort of book, plug and play. You arrive, you enjoy the most incredible trip. Um, and that's it. Yeah. So, that's that's a really good uh simple way to do it where everything is taken care of.
>> And also guys, don't forget find out where the locals eat. That's where you will get authentic food. find a local and go where they go. Gabby Bundani, thank you so much for joining us for our travel feature for today in the next hour of the show. The naked scientist, get your questions in early, but also parenting and parents. Let's talk about parental favoritism and how do you navigate it, especially if it is accidental. It's 2:00.

>> Good afternoon. I'm Bali Zamini. The Johannesburg High Court has rejected an application to have the trial of alleged crime boss Matala and his co-acuse stand down during periods when accused number one Musakana's lawyer is unavailable.
The application was brought by advocate Ryan Ging who told the court he is committed to another high court matter.
He argued that Gigana's constitutional right to a fair trial would be prejudiced if the case continued in his absence. But Matlala's legal team fought the application, arguing that a previous court order directed that the trial proceed uninterrupted until its conclusion. Matal and his co-acused face a combined 25 charges arising from three alleged assassination attempts carried out between 2022 and 2024. Delivering his ruling, Judge Kasim Musa says the court has carefully considered the submissions of all parties. The trial in case number SS 98 stroke 2025 shall commence today, Monday the 20th of July, 2026, and shall continue uninterruptedly up until Friday the 7th day of August 2026.
Police have confirmed that the 16 million rand tender fraud case involving the Mfully local municipality originated from a complaint lodged by slain municipal employee Martha Mani Ran SFU.
The confirmation comes despite repeated claims by the municipality that Ransfu did not expose the alleged procurement scandal involving the purchase of 18 vehicles. The case returned to the Thunderbale Park Magistrate's Court today where former fleet manager Latum Polo made a brief appearance. Kosuana Malingi reports.
>> Following the assassination style killing of Martha Mani Ransful earlier this year, Mueni local municipality was at pains to deny that she had played any role in exposing the multi-million rand tender scandal. However, police spokesperson Amanda Fanve has now confirmed that the case forms part of a series of complaints submitted by Ransfu and referred to investigators.
>> As I indicated uh the the uh lady has indic uh reported several irregularities to the police and this specific matter that we we now witnessed in court is one of them.

7 minutes after 2:00, the second and final hour of 702 afternoons with mea.
We're going to be jumping into our parenting and parents feature for today.
Parental favoritism. I mean, we touched on it a little bit earlier when we talked about sibling envy and jealousy, but parental favoritism, it is not always intentional. Sometimes it is. How have you dealt with it? Maybe you are somebody who experienced the favoritism or maybe you're a parent who recognized much later that yo, I was not aware that I was playing these kids against one another or making one feel favored over the other. So, we'll be having that conversation with your guinea piri and then we wrap up with Dr. Chris Smith and our uh naked scientist and you can start to send through all of your science related questions 0183072 SMS us 3172 tweet atm radio72 using the hashtag 702 afternoons and the WhatsApp line 072721702.
>> Parenting and parents on 702 >> parenting and parents time on 702 and we're talking about parental favoritism and how you navigate it. Favoritism is not always intentional and I think it happens quite often in ways we may not see or even understand. 0183072 and the WhatsApp line 072721702.
We're joined by qualified counseling psychologist as well as the head of the South African College of Applied Psychology, friend of the show, Yogini Packer for this. Yogini, welcome to the show. Thank you for joining us again.
>> Hi, the 702 afternoon listener. It's lovely to be with you this afternoon. I have to ask um Yini just in terms of when one ascertains that there's been favoritism because on the one hand um if I'm just to measure based on the home I grew up in the three of us did have completely different experiences because number one our parents were not the same people number two their financial positions changed between having each of us or each of us even starting to be able to really compare one another. And number three, some kids needs are not the same as others.
>> Definitely, even in homes where the parents are the same and parents usually and genuinely love all their children equally, but love and equal treatment are not always ex experienced the same way by each child. So while the intention might be present, it's the execution and the actual interaction with each child to meet their unique needs that might be where the challenge lies.
So how would you then define favoritism knowing all of this information where one you know I feel like favoritism could be very subjective where one person might say you are favoring this person the other one might say I've adjusted myself to the needs of this person I'm not favoring them >> so there needs to be a pattern of it there needs to be an element of consistency in that experience so parental favoritism is where one child would consistently experience more positive attention or approval, emotional closeness, or even some flexibility or investment and support from a parent than the other child. So it isn't always intentional, but children are actually remarkably sensitive to differences in how they're being treated and because they at that young age may not be able to understand the needs of other siblings. They can however feel when their needs are not being met.
>> So can we um um give an example when you say um a repeated pattern? Uh earlier on in the conversation we were talking about um envying your siblings or being jealous of your siblings due to their success or their smarts or them you know in inverted commas doing better than you in life. And um some came to say my siblings uh were jealous of me because of X Y and Zed. And you know a parent um was participating in those dynamics. And um maybe in that response you can share with us if if um any kind of sibling rivalry/ jealousy is um can be attributed to how the parents parented them. even if it was completely unintentional.
>> I think it's definitely something that's more common than we think. Real failure.
I'll think of my own examples. My siblings would often look at me as the one that knows it all. I'm not because the parents would always iterate some narrative. So when you have parents who will openly say you're the smart one, you're the one we don't have to worry about. They are not always taking note of what does that message say when you complete it. If I'm the smart one, what does it mean about my other siblings? If I'm the one you never have to worry about, what does it mean?
I mean it can be something so natural like a parent spending more time talking to their eldest child for example because they may have a shared interest in sport or music whereas the other child then would then quietly fall to the sidelines and they may even believe actually my parent enjoys spending more time with my siblings than me. But from the parents perspective they'll see it as I'm connecting with one of my kids.
From the other child's perspective, it they may feel more emotionally distant.
They may feel that disconnection even stronger. So parents don't often realize the imbalance because they're responding to different needs rather than in intentionally choosing to be favored.
Some things just come naturally. It's like with your friends as well. You'll connect with certain friends naturally on certain elements, but you have to be a little bit more conscious when you're parenting that you're meeting each child where their unique needs are. Definitely doesn't mean mimicking the same parenting for each child, but taking time to understand what closeness means for each child so that you can develop that relationship and that safe space for each child and their unique needs.
I'm I'm just uh uh wanting to take a step back because I think the example you gave is so perfect where um if there is a shared interest. So let's say the one child is um playing rugby and dad is a fan of rugby and dad shows up for all the rugby and then the other child plays like I don't know drums and um dad doesn't necessarily go to sit and listen to practice of drumming because the one might be easier than the other and then it might look like well you you are favoring this one or I'm not loved as much >> definitely I mean we see this a lot with families that have a sport orientation where let's say there's an artistic child within the family someone who likes to create things whether it's musically whether it's through visual art they might start or stop sharing their achievements because they might feel that I don't get the same enthusias ism when I achieve something in my field compared to a brother that plays rugby not taking and I suppose we must also remember the development of the brain with children is still very in an emotional space it's only in mid20ies does that executive functioning fully develop where we can then truly appreciate well I see these traits in my mom and my driver and I understand why they connected so well, but I see he's tracing myself and my dad or even myself and another adult in the family and perhaps that's why I felt a closeness and a better connection to them. So there are things that will help us naturally develop those relationships.
But it is so important as parents that you are able to reflect on are you creating the space of unfairness unintentionally because it could be accidental, it could be unconscious where a parent will just naturally connect more easily with one child's personality or their interests or even their temperament or life circumstances.
You could have a circumstance where a second born is born at a time of deep grief and that could have impacted the connection.
>> So you also have to consider everything else happening in the parents lives at the time of that child coming into the family system. You also have to consider finances because there could also be we had more before you came along and since you came along things have been challenging not understanding that perhaps when the second born arrived there was a retrenchment um socioeconomic or social political things were in play but children won't understand all those circumstances they will only understand my immediate needs within my immediate environment are either being met or not. Another dynamic that I just thought about um is the concept of firstborn last born. And in many homes you'll find that because you are the oldest sibling um you are you know I'm going to say in inverted commas get certain privileges while you know firstborns will also say well I had the most responsibility whereas lastborns um uh while they're growing up I mean I've seen for example where some parents will allow the small child to also blow out the candle on the cake of the other child because no but they're small, they're the last born. Um and and that's quite a tricky one. How would you say is the best way for those things to be navigated where you do have the the little one who now gets babyed um and and possibly rightfully so, but in certain circumstances it's like how but but why?
>> Yeah, but order is a really a tricky one. I mean there'll be sometimes we joke about it will be second child syndrome and we'll have all these inside jokes about it but we also have to take a serious note of the impact that it's having on the child. Um so it's not only just birth order it's what's that need at that time. So where you have a pre-teen perhaps there's a big gap um and you have some your elder child as a pre-teen and now you have this new baby coming into the home. Um there might be certain needs that they feel they have to set aside because priority is now going and all attention is now going to this newborn baby. It can be even more complicated when you have a toddler having to bring home a newborn baby because they even have less of an understanding and they might be then acting out. So you can quickly develop these stereotypes of the favorite child or the overlooked child or the secondborn syndrome. Um and we we see this in adulthood when adults you know reflect back on their upbringing even the favorite sometimes it's disadvantage you'll hear things like I was the favorite but I never felt free to fail or you'd hear I became the responsible one because nobody checked on me whereas on the flip side it would be yeah our parents loved us all but they they didn't really understand me they understood my driver I spent my childhood years trying to earn attention. These are some of the things we'll hear from adults in their adulthood when they're trying to heal or recover from certain challenges that they're experiencing in their day-to-day lives. It's often linked back to early childhood experiences. Um, and then you have these stereotypes and there's assumptions that come with the stereotypes. So, you'll have an overlooked child that will perhaps inhabit the narrative that I'm I'm never good enough. What does that mean? When you grow into adulthood, constantly feeling like you're never good enough.
You always come second. Nobody notices you unless you achieving something. Um, and then we wonder why people are burning out and succumbing to stress and the physiological impact of stress when they're pushing themselves so much because by achieving things is how they feel love is how they feel their family gives them attention. They have to earn their love or else their needs don't matter.
>> Whereas the favorite child is kind of under the pressure to stay perfect, the fear of disappointing parents. Then you have the guilt towards caring for siblings which can then also have resentment later in life. I always had to cover up for you or I always have to take the blame. I was always the one punished. Um so these things you carry it. It's it's literally baggage that children carry into adulthood which is why it's important for parents in the very least to reflect on these things.
There is a WhatsApp message. CD says one day we should also talk about the parental favoritism to children born outside of the marriage because of the guilt of that. In my case, my father had from not having been around for my halfsisters growing up. My father seemingly never says no to things she's asked for, but I would but would say no to me asking for the same things. Yo, that is a another very very tricky dynamic. What are your thoughts on that one?
>> I mean, we do see that with blended households. It's quite tricky when you coming in from like different relationships and you're trying to blend your family, but you still have different incomes feeding into each child's needs. Or you still have different support systems based on the families on the other side. And that can be tricky because now you're looking at the latest iPhone or even let's keep it more rudimental. We're looking at schools. Two kids in the home. One kid is attending the local government school. The other kid is attending a private school within the area. It's an unfair setup because the private school might be subsidized by the grandparents on the other end or the parent on the other end. whereas the dynamic of parents within the home isn't set up to afford that schooling system. So it it's not to say I mean it's extremely tricky because which one do you choose? No choice there is going to benefit everyone equally.
>> Sure. And I'm wondering because that that conversation happens quite a lot where they'll say um you know the father of my one child came and brought McDonald's for the one child and I told him he must buy for all children. Um and then like the example you gave of the private school versus public school. Um, I know there is no one-sizefits-all answer, but what are your thoughts, Yugini, if there's a mother who says, "I live with both my children. One one is insisting on doing this and the other's insisting on doing that in terms of the kind of support." Um, is it advisable that the parent who is the primary caregiver says, "Guys, unfortunately, um, the rule is it must be as equal and fair as possible in the household.
Each family is such a unique unit. So whether it's a single mom and two or more kids, whether it's your nuclear family, mom and dad, and kids that were just born from mom and dad, whether it's blended families, each unit is going to have unique elements. We cannot always ensure that the finances part is going to be split equally. um we can not even ensure that the time spent is going to be spent equally depending on what the quarter is mandated. But what the parent needs to do is when they do have that time regardless of how long or how short that time is, they need to try and be as fair in that time as possible. So parents need to ask themselves some difficult questions. Who do I praise most? Who do I worry about most? when who gets my patience but who gets the leftover version of me. So sometimes we go through the days giving the best of ourselves to everyone and everything. We don't even afford ourselves that luxury.
But then the children who we have to connect with our school, get homework done, do stuff, do bedtime, do bar time, we still have to find time to connect with. And when we're looking at that connection, it's that one-on-one time where there is 10 minutes a day just to give that child your undivided attention that can mean more than the McDonald's that I didn't get. When you take time to learn each child's emotional language, how do they feel loved? What is it that they want? Do they want conversation from you? Do they want cuddles before bed? Do they want encouragement? or do they simply want you to watch them?
Connection should not fit the child should not fit the child, >> not only the parent.
>> So, you have to be able to adapt to each child's unique needs. You need to notice when your child becomes quiet. Noticing the quiet child is so essential because that doesn't mean if they're not causing any trouble that they're okay, they cope. It could just sometimes be that they're withdrawing because they get the least emotional attention because they're not asking for it.
>> And we care openly. I mean, if you have a unit where you have two kids, you're a single mom, one comes home after visiting dad with McDonald's and the other one is at home. It's m week.
Things are tough at home and you're trying to figure out now how do you manage this? Have that open conversation.
Even if it means I mean if we can cultivate sharing and caring within the home within certain boundaries I mean there are always going to be challenges about inhabitants later in life it's never going to be fair it's never going to be equal and we need to understand that life is not fair all the time but when we are together as a family as a unit how can we care for each other openly how can we acknowledge the toughness of life when life is being cool. But how can we navigate this space together? So maybe we cut the McDonald's further into three.
>> Yes. And I think I think there are some some things we can look at working around. We've got a voice note on 072721702.
>> Good afternoon.
Yes, sure. You know, some parents making it quite obvious that one child is being loved or favored or over others. And and parents must cautiously remember that children must be loved equally but obviously cannot be treated the same because of their you know different personalities.
And the children as well have a tendency to push the envelope just to test how much uh a parent loves or favor him or her at a given time. Interesting topic job here.
And I think um um um Yini like you'll think about the fact that when for example a child turns 18 or they have their 18th birthday or 21st whatever the case may be. The last born might come at a time when the parents are really doing well financially and then it'll look like but why did he get a car and for my 18th I just got an Xbox.
>> And that's the thing the goal is fairness. It's emotional responsiveness and intentional connection, but the goal really isn't identical parenting. Um, and children's needs aren't identical.
It might be that one would get a car and then one is stuck with loans for studying because they went to college after school. So, it might be later in life doing some contribution towards that or if they have grandkids pouring into the grandkids. But it's about that open communication to understand that well when you finished high school life was tough. We were struggling and you had to go to a community college or you had to work and pay your way. Whereas now there's a younger sibling that is qualifying from high school and funds are more readily available. But it's that intention of if I'm helping my child have this upper hand in life, how else am I supporting my other children with what they're going through? Doesn't always have to be monetary. Um, do I look after my grandkids whenever they need time off that might mean more to them right now with what they're going through in life than looking at I mean they say comparison is the thief of joy, right? So, if we're constantly looking at what everyone else around us have, we're always going to come short.
There's always going to be someone doing better than us, someone getting more.
Um, so it's about having these open conversations from early childhood that I'm not always going to be able to show up for you the way you want me to. And I'm also not always going to show up for each of you exactly the same.
>> But one thing I can guarantee you is I'm going to cry.
>> Yes. And I mean one of the things I was going to say we didn't even get an opportunity to touch on how some people in household are not treat some kids are not treated equally because of their gender. Here's an example where they say um I grew up in a family where my mom always favored my brother over us. I remember me and my brother wanted to go to college back then. I asked for help with registration fees. She said, "I must let my younger brother go to college first and she will see after he is finished with his course and uh um if she can help me." And then he ended up dropping out. This is Lucia in Safire Town. We're going to have to leave it there, but we will have a conversation again because this is a very tough one.
And hey, the favoritism and uh also just that balance in the household, but as uh our counseling psychologist has shared with us is it's about um um you as the parent also just making that effort.
Sometimes things are not uh will never be equal and you're not trying to be perfect, but hey, hopefully you can make some great connections with your kids.
It's after 2:30.
Time for your latest Eyewitness News headlines. Good afternoon.
>> Thanks. Good afternoon. We begin with news just in. The state has seized assets worth 326 million rand from corruption accused businessman Hanguani Mla. Today the Johannesburg High Court granted the National Prosecuting Authorities asset forfeite unit a final forfeiture order for assets held by Mumela and its affiliated companies. The matter relates to the Tbisa hospital corruption where a group of highly connected business people were awarded inflated tenders and contracts amounting to about 2 billion rand. Suspended EMPD chief Julius's legal team is preparing an affidavit in support of his bid for bail. Quanazi and a JMPD officer known only as witness K were arrested last week in connection with the alleged theft of precious stones with nearly 15 million rand 3 years ago. While the state is not opposing bail, it says the court must first be satisfied that granting their release is in the interest of justice. And in Nigeria, rescue operations are underway as dozens of people are feared to have drowned after their boat capsized. According to police, one body was recovered yesterday while five more were found early this morning. Emergency responders say up to 20 people are still missing. Well, those are the headlines. >> Coming up >> on 702 drive with John Pearlman.
>> 702 drive is coming up from 3 to 6 p.m.
with John Pearlman. Happy Monday John.
How are you doing >> well? Thanks. Happy Monday to you. Good afternoon to all the listeners. Hope you're well.
>> I am doing well and I'd love to know did you ever feel jealous of any of your siblings if any or them of you and your success or doing well?
>> No, nothing major really. A bit of rivalry with my older brother um who is seven years older than me. Um and he he was a very or is a very clever guy and I know this is hard to imagine but even handsomemer than I am. So there was a little bit there.
>> Yes.
>> But but nothing major really because he he actually went to live abroad in the mid70s. So we've always been in different places. But I was listening to the conversation. I thought it was fascinating. And it reminded me of a book that I really recommend to people called The Talent Code by a very smart guy called Daniel Coyle. And he looked at the 10 fastest men in the world. And he found that almost all of them were either second last or the youngest.
Which >> for me has always created the picture of younger ones always striving, always wanting to keep up with older brothers and their friends saying, "Yeah, you can't play with us." Or whatever. It's a terrific book. That's not the only thing in the book, but it's a very interesting bit.
>> All right. We definitely will be checking out. You said talent the talent code.
>> Daniel Coyle.
>> Okay. Daniel Co.
>> Check out his start with his TED talks or whatever. But smart guy.
>> All right. What's coming up on your show today?
>> If he was my brother, I'd be jealous of him. Just to go back to where we started.
>> Yes.
>> So, uh, important news. The asset forfeite unit has announced that they're seizing or they there's a confirmation of assets seized from Hunguani Mala who has been accused and alleged to have done all sorts of things in regard to corruption in the public money space.
We'll talk about that in more detail, try and get more details on that after 5:00. New rules for the upcoming local government elections uh le about what you can and can't put on social media and what you do if you're unhappy with what's on social media. We'll look more closely at those rules at 10 to 5. Ian Cameron who is the head of the parliamentary portfolio committee on policing has written a piece saying that we just have way way more generals than we need. You look at generals and brigaders, there are 722 of them in the police and the cost in salaries runs into the billions. He's asking the question, what do they all actually do?
Which I think is a fair uh a fair question to ask in the courts Matlala and four others facing charges of attempted murder. More on that at 20 3.
>> Are you happy with the outcome? I know you were not uh very uh you know you didn't bet your house on anybody winning but uh um were you on your toes throughout the whole game?
>> Am I >> were you on your toes with anxiety?
>> No I I I I was getting a bit uncomfortable because I mean you know let's face it after 90 minutes Argentina hadn't had a shot and if this had gone to penalties and they'd won it I would have been deeply unhappy. So, I was delighted when Spain's goal went in.
When the game started, I didn't have a particular horse in the race. Whoever won, I'd have been happy. But it reminded me I was at the 1990 World Cup between Germany and Argentina, >> and Argentina played exactly the same way.
>> Um, they they had no they had more players sent off than shots on goal and could have won it on penalties. Same way. So, yeah, football justice was done. I'm delighted. Uh what did you think about uh Trump still being there in the moment and the president trying to FIFA president trying to move him out of the celebration?
>> What what more is there to be said as as night follows day? It was always going to happen.
>> 7:02 drive with John Bman coming up from 3 to 6:00 p.m.
>> 7:02 >> The naked scientist.
>> Time for the naked scientist. Dr. Chris Smith is with us 0183072 and the WhatsApp line 072721702.
Get all of your science related questions into um this conversation. Dr. Chris Smith, I'm curious to know if um when it comes to probabilities and things like that and predictions when there are people who get predictions of things like World Cup finals correct, is there a science behind it or it is just like winning the lottery?
>> Oh, I think that Paul the octopus that had an uncanny ability to >> Oh my gosh, I forgot about matches. I mean, it must be based on science. I mean, an octopus and a tank. What higher authority on football can there possibly be? No, I mean, more seriously, I actually interviewed a guy about a month and a half ago who has built an AI related system that that does make uncannily accurate predictions. And the data they fed into their AI because it it was news to me. I hadn't realized this was going on, but basically we know twice a second where every single player is in every game on the pitch and where the ball is. And so because of all this careful tracking because they basically got motion detection and image analysis to follow games end to end now of all games over a really long period of time.
You can feed this into AI systems and it can look at how different individuals play together, how they relate together, who goes well, who's a bad fit and so on. So they're now marketing this as a way for uh football clubs who want to tender to transfer a player or buy a player, sell a player to work out whether it will be good value for money and a good fit with their lineup. And their accuracy is in the 90 plus% in terms of whether this will make a positive or negative impact on the way that team plays in the aftermath. I was I was really surprised that a the data exists so richly but but also the the degree of accuracy you can get to. So, we're getting to a point now where the kinds of parameters that affect games and not just football, but many different games can all be computed and considered. And historically, there were far too many of them for one human being's brain to comprehend and take into account in in its entirety. But computers are really very good at this.
And AI and machine learning type algorithms are exceptional at it, which means you can begin to reduce some of the uncertainty. Now, you're never going to reduce all the uncertainty. you're never going to be able to say this is going to be the outcome 100%. You just can't do that. But you can reduce the uncertainties down and help to really load the coin in terms of where you understand the outcome to to lie and and that's only going to get better with time.
>> All right, the lines are open 0183072 and the WhatsApp line 072721702.
Our first uh question uh from Tabang.
Please ask the naked scientist whether the heat shields on a spacecraft are used on the return path to Earth only.
Yeah, that's right. Because when you launch the spacecraft, then the amount of resistance it incurs is much much lower because you're you're not doing the kinds of speeds they are when they come back. When the latest Artemis mission returned from its path around the back of the moon, it arrived doing thousands of kilometers an hour, thousands and thousands of kilometers an hour. And this is when it runs into the atmosphere like you running into a brick wall. Because when you compress a gas in front of the heat shield, you get what's called adabatic heating because the gas can't get out of the way quickly enough.
All of the molecules bounce into each other. And this is why the temperature goes up because you're doing work because of the speed of the spacecraft against the gas in front of the spacecraft, compressing the gas, making it hot. It's a bit like you if you take your bicycle pump, put your thumb over the end, and compress it very hard. The air escaping will burn your thumb. It's that hot. It's exactly the same principle. That really applies only on the return journey though because they're going that much faster than they were on the outward journey because they're taking off from the ground where the atmosphere is thickest accelerating with their rocket and going very fast.
In fact, achieving escape velocity, the speed at which you have to be traveling to get away from Earth's gravity and not go into an orbit. Yes, but not as fast as they were going on the journey home.
And hence the amount of this heating will be reduced on the outward journey compared to the inward leg. Which is why the heat shield is is used on the return leg to push the air out of the way, burn up in the process, therefore expel that energy or turn that energy into turbulence heat and burning up the heat shield and not burning up the spacecraft.
>> All right, we've got a voice note coming through on 072721702 >> and Dr. Chris, uh, I've been wondering, um, how come when I'm seated with someone, when I yawn, they immediately yawn.
But what is surprising is that when I'm speaking to say my girlfriend over the phone and I yawn, they also yawn and yet they are not next to me.
Um and sometimes it doesn't happen one after the other. It happens instantaneously.
Why is that? How do we explain that uh from or with science? Uh Dr. Chris, this is witness centurion.
>> All right. So >> an interesting question. Um, the answer to this is yawning is contagious. And when you can't see someone yawning, you can still hear them yawning. You can hear the contortions of their face. You hear their breath change. And we we are tuned into those signals. So even though we may not be able to see it, we sure as hell can hear it. And if you think about it from an evolutionary point of view, we think contagious yawning evolved because when we were hunter gatherers sitting around a little group at night, then everything else was trying to make us their lunch or their dinner or their nocturnal snack. And we might not be able to see each other sitting around the campfire very clearly, but we are certainly tuned into how awake each other is. And if you catch someone nodding and yawning, and you do it by hearing them, that's going to make you want to yawn. Because then even though you can't see them yawn, you will yawn and that will wake you up as well as waking them up and everyone else. So I think that's the reason why because we're tuning into other signals other than just the visual. And if you think about if I yawned now, you would be able to hear my voice change. You'd hear the way I was breathing change. I make other discrete sounds that go with the yawn.
And those are the giveaways. And I think that's what's going on here down the telephone.
>> I had to mute my mic twice to yawn while you were talking about yawning. Oh dear.
I'm making you yawn and sending you this.
>> That's how to make any any rude remarks about the actual question itself. And you know, people I'm around, they keep yawning. I'm sure that's what >> we take a break. When we come back, more of your questions for Dr. Chris Smith.

One says please ask doctor if mining activities can affect the mass of the earth and ultimately the gravitational pull of the sun on the earth and affect global warming. Good one Deborah in Naturena.
Well, the reassuring note is that no, not demonstrabably they don't. There's one nuance subtlety to this, which is one form of mining is getting gas out of the ground. Getting gas out of the ground liberates helium. And in fact, that's our main source of helium, which is produced when radioactive elements decay deep underground. And the helium, which the decay process produces, is trapped in the same geological formations that trap natural gas. Hence, when we tap into gas reserves, we also get some helium. And the helium is very valuable. We can sell it. But helium is so light that when it escapes into the atmosphere, Earth's gravitational field isn't strong enough to hang on to it. So we will by tapping into a gas supply and releasing the gas and therefore getting the helium be releasing some helium into space, deep space, and therefore it's lost from the Earth and therefore the Earth is losing that little bit of mass.
But the Earth is actually gaining mass all the time because we are a gravitationally active body. The earth weighs in inverted commas the mass of the earth is about 6 * 10^ the 24 kilos.
So the earth is quite a big object. It attracts things in by gravity. That's why we hang on to the moon. And the consequence of that is the stuff is falling to earth all the time. And it's thousands of tons per year of material raining down all over the earth. So although we're losing some gases like hydrogen and helium as I just mentioned we're gaining mass overall albeit all over the earth in terms of dust and other stuff that is raining down on the earth's surface. So mining as in terms of in relation to the scale of our planet is a tiny tiny impact. It's also liberating tiny amounts of material that might be lost to space. Making satellites, making space rockets, things that that are lost forever, but up against the mass of the Earth, it's inconsequential and therefore it is not going to demonstraably affect how the Earth behaves gravitationally or how it turns and so on.
>> All right, another voice note.
>> Hi, I just like to ask um Dr. Chris, how does cough syrup work as far as soothing a cough goes? Because I understand that maybe the throat is irritated, but you swallow something and it's on your um esophagus, if that's the correct term, for however many seconds, but then you swallow it and it goes in your stomach. So, is cough syrup as effective as we are led to believe it is? Thank you.
>> A cynic once said to me, because a lot of these cough syrups contain stuff that gives you a bit of loose bowel function, let's say, makes you a bit loose. And one person said to me, they work because they make you so loose you're frightened to cough. But the answer is it's right to be skeptical because most of these things the way they're achieving their soothing action is they've got usually sugars or sweeteners which are not sugary but they are sweet in taste to make them palatable. They contain thick chemicals hydroxythyl cellulose and caroxythyl cellulose that kind of thing which are basically thickening agents.
So as they run down your throat they coat the back of the throat. Cough reflexes arise because you stimulate your internal leneal nerve which runs right up to your larynx. And if you activate that nerve, it triggers a cough because you have a cough center in your brain stem. So if you coat the back of the throat with something which keeps other things like cold air, other nasties or whatever away, it reduces the urge to cough by preventing stimulation of the internal larynal nerve a bit. But there are some chemicals that genuinely can affect coughing and these include opioids and things and there are there are various chemicals which they're called antitusive medicines. They do have a genuine suppression in the nervous system of the cough reflex. And if someone is towards their end of their life becoming quite distressed by a bad cough, for example, you can give these agents and they they suppress coughing and they really do work. But coughs are there for a reason. we need to cough because they're there to help us defend our airway, clear secretions, clear infection, and clear other debris. And if you suppress those, then you can hasten damage to an accumulation of those things in the lungs, which is not good in the long term. So yes, there are chemicals that really do have an anti-tussive effect and if if swallowed will do that, but most over-the-counter remedies do not contain these substances because they are quite powerful drugs some of them and therefore they mainly rely on that coating effect of the back of the throat and this cuts down stimulation or soothes the irritation of the internal lingal nerves which are what triggers cough in the first place.
>> All right, let's see if we can do a quick one with the t time left. Katie from Randberg says, um, why when I eat grapefruit I start sweating immediately.
Any idea?
>> I don't know what's going on under that circumstance, but there are a number of things in grapefruit. Of course, it's quite acidic and it's also um got a number of different chemicals in it that can produce allergic reactions. And so if a person's having a repeatable physiological reaction when they're exposed to that particular fruit time after time, the chances are this could be something imunological and um one ought to be a little bit careful just in case it's the kind of allergic reaction that could proceed and progress into something worse. So um do perhaps take some advice on that one.
>> Thank you so much Dr. Chris Smith. We'll be back together next week.
