Delivering The Plan: Irrigation Projects in Turkana, West Pokot and Baringo

[00:01:19]Currently the total area under irrigation in this country is about 777,000 [music] acres.

[00:01:28]When you look in terms of statistics, that's just about 2% of the total arable arable land in [music] this country.

[00:01:37]And majorly when you look at the potentials which are there, we [music] are likely with the current water resources to increase that area to almost 43.9 million acres with proper interventions.

[00:01:53]>> [music] >> We have a program um of intervention uh uh you know, we call them community irrigation [music] projects under the national expanded program. These are areas in which you know, farmers come together and we are able [music] to do irrigation infrastructure for them so that we provide irrigation water. And when you look at this category of projects, of course I've mentioned the national [music] irrigation authority, they've done about more than 200 projects across the whole country. In terms of acreage, these are projects [music] which you'll find ranging between 100 acres to almost 3,000. And purely we transfer the infrastructure back to the farmers for operation and maintenance.

[00:03:12]>> [music] >> Turkana >> [music] >> is an area which has massive potential in terms of irrigation development.

[00:03:22]And actually we have no reason as to why people in Turkana should be food [music] insecure.

[00:03:29]We have two key rivers. There's a Turkwel river and there's a Kerio river which of course traverses and drain to Lake Turkana, which is also another massive landmass.

[00:03:43]Now, National Irrigation Authority, we already have what I will call Turkana clusters already [music] which you have already developed.

[00:03:51]You know, we have Katilu, we have Morulem, Elelea, and Lokubae. This cluster of schemes, [music] we have already managed to develop about 7,500 acres. And already this under under production.

[00:04:07]And these schemes alone, we can [music] be able to increase up to 15,000 acres.

[00:04:13]And this one is what [music] we are working on.

[00:04:39]the entire county >> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Ultimately I would want to mention that there are plans to do the Lowat Dam.

[00:06:11]The Lowat Dam alone will put about 50,000 >> [music] >> acres under irrigation by utilizing now the Kerio, >> [music] >> you know, Kerio River. You know, it is situated there. And once this is done, then we will be able to actualize in terms of uh acreage about 50,000.

[00:06:29][music] >> [music] >> Katilu irrigation scheme >> [music] [music] >> uh >> [music] >> is permanent river >> [music] >> So uh so sisi to eradicate hunger and prop- and property.

[00:08:11]>> [music] >> Uh West Pokot has two key [music] rivers. There's Moruny River and there's Weiwei. And uh I would want to mention is that the potential which is there is about 25,000.

[00:08:40]>> [music] >> And uh we have only exploited about 4,000 or there about. Though there's still a lot in which is to be [music] done to exploit the additional 21,000.

[00:08:50]So if we can be able to provide an alternative source of income through farming. And I think there are testimonies [music] and case studies like if you go to Chesogon at Tot Marich where by youth would rather now engage in farming than going [music] to steal or engage in cattle rustling. So this one has a direct impact [music] and is the best way to go to be able to ensure food security in this in this areas.

And now the scheme is back into production.

[00:11:46]So, the whole of the now the 3,500 going going going forward will be able to be put under under crop.
