Olympic curlers sweep the ice to generate friction heat that melts the tiny frozen bumps (pebble) on the ice surface, creating a microscopic water layer that acts as a lubricant, reducing friction to near zero and allowing the stone to glide further and straighter while enabling strategic steering around blockers.

Why Do Curlers Sweep the Ice?Hinzugefügt:
Why do Olympic curlers furiously sweep the ice in front of a sliding stone?
They aren't cleaning it. They are using thermodynamics to melt it. Curling ice isn't smooth. It is covered in tiny frozen bumps called pebble. As the heavy stone slides, it grinds against this pebble. This friction slows the stone down and naturally kisses it to curve.
But when players aggressively sweep, the heavy friction from the broom bristles generates intense heat. This physically melts the top of the pebble into a microscopic layer of water. The strategy, this water acts as a temporary lubricant dropping the friction underneath the stone to almost zero.
Because the friction is gone, the stone instantly stops curving and glides significantly further. This allows the sweepers to literally steer the rock in midair bypassing blockers and guiding it perfectly into the target.
