Marines are celebrating A Change of Command with a workoutAdded:
And welcome back to Good Day Sacramento everybody. Downtown Sacramento is getting a Marine wake-up call this morning and we're here with Major Cal Saturn who's going to tell us why the Marines have taken over Sacramento. So good morning my friend.
>> Good morning Bella. What you got here is the most prestigious branch in the United States military combined with the most prestigious law enforcement department in the state. One team, one fight. We're coming together to celebrate the change of command ceremony myself Major Saturn. I'm the commanding officer of the Marines in Sacramento. We cover all Northern California and Western Nevada. Today I hand over the reins of the command to Major John Weber who's in the formation getting some leading by example right now. So that's what we do.
>> tradition of the Marines. It is so cool seeing you guys out here seeing you guys out here right at 7:00 you know taking off for the run. Tell me about the tradition of you guys here in Sacramento.
>> Absolutely. The Marines started way back in 1775 before America was even born right? Battles won 250 years later here we are throughout the COVID pandemic so on and so forth. We're a recruiting command. All right? So throughout the pandemic and everything we're the only branch of service who continued to make our recruitment numbers not because of any other reasons beside the fact that these Marines lead by example and they never lower the standards and then the American generations continue to rise to the standard. It's amazing thing.
>> And here in Sacramento you guys are number one on this side of the Mississippi for recruiting is that correct?
Tell us about that. Tell us about Sacramento and its population.
>> Absolutely. So with competitive recruiting it's all about not just numbers but the people that you just send up to boot camp actually make it and they graduate. And not only do they graduate they graduate with distinguished honors right? So those combinations of factors come together and we lead the way out of 24 stations this side of the Mississippi and and we hope to keep it that way.
>> That's awesome. So this run today specifically tell me about the route that you guys are on and you know where people can see you guys kind of pop up throughout the city.
>> Absolutely. We started at the Pony Express monument in Old Sac. We went through the tunnel, came into downtown, went through the old I know it as K Street Plaza, right? But Delco and the Capitol Mall Drive and now we're out here at the Capitol steps and we're going to go straight across Capitol Mall Drive down across the Tower Bridge back into West Sac and then from there we're going to finish it back off at >> I love it. Now you wanted to bring in some of the CHP, isn't that right? So tell us about the CHP and their >> Absolutely. This right here, right now he's a CHP officer, but he's a reserve chief warrant officer in the Marine Corps. So he's always out here supporting us and I appreciate it. This is Michael Hammond right here.
>> All right, Michael Hammond, we're pulling an audible with this microphone.
Tell us about yourself and the work that you guys do with the >> Hi, good morning. So yeah, we came out here. Major Say Turn is a good friend of mine. We go back a long time and so he asked if the CHP can come support this event and we're more than happy to provide traffic control for the run. We also have our CHP applicants out here from Valley Division getting in on the PT. So we're really excited for this joint event with the Marine Corps.
>> I love it. Major Cow, why do people need to get involved with the Marines?
>> I would say this. I would say if I wanted to get into the CHP, what advice do you have for me, Officer Hammond?
>> Well, the CHP loves hiring military. So it's it's definitely a good thing to to join a branch. If you're looking for a career of service, you know, the Marines serve our country, the CHP serves our state. So it goes hand in hand. So if you're considering a career in either Marine Corps law enforcement, you know, marines.com or chpmadeformore.com.
>> Guys, thank you for being here with us.
Thank you guys for hanging out with us all morning. We appreciate all that you do FOR US. OORAH!
>> OORAH!
>> ALL RIGHT, FORMATION!
