Irving Penn: Why the Most Powerful Photos Have Nothing in Them

[00:00:07]There is a photograph of a woman. No  background, no details. No world around her.

[00:00:18]Just a face. And the darkness  that swallows everything else.

[00:00:25]The question is: what does it mean when the most powerful thing in a photograph is  what isn’t there? Sit with that.

[00:00:40]Because by the end of this video, you will see photographs differently.  Including, perhaps, your own walls.

[00:00:53]Irving Penn photographed  for Vogue for over 50 years.

[00:01:00]He photographed Picasso, Truman Capote, Miles  Davis. Indigenous tribes in New Guinea and Peru.

[00:01:12]Cigarette butts found on the street and turned  them into museum pieces that still live on.

[00:01:21]He did all of this with almost nothing.

[00:01:25]No elaborate sets. No theatrical lighting.

[00:01:31]A painted wall. Daylight. And a philosophy  most photographers still haven’t understood.

[00:01:43]Penn believed the background  was not neutral. It was active.

[00:01:52]When you place a subject against emptiness, against black, against silence,  the eye has nowhere to escape.

[00:02:04]The viewer cannot look away.

[00:02:08]The void becomes pressure. And  under pressure, truth emerges.

[00:02:18]He told himself: truth comes in fragments. It reveals itself as it is. As  it does not want to be seen.

[00:02:34]Penn would photograph his subjects for  hours. Not to exhaust them. To wait.

[00:02:43]To wait for the performance to collapse.

[00:02:46]For the mask to fall.

[00:02:48]For the face to stop trying.

[00:02:51]And simply be.

[00:02:56]In 1950, Penn began placing his subjects into  a corner. Literally. Two converging walls.

[00:03:09]A confined space with nowhere to go.

[00:03:12]Call it confinement that reveals. When  a person cannot retreat, cannot perform, cannot construct, what remains  is presence. Pure presence.

[00:03:29]Penn did not photograph what was there.

[00:03:33]He photographed what appeared  when everything else was removed.

[00:03:42]Darkness is not a stylistic choice.

[00:03:46]Or rather, it should not be.

[00:03:49]When used with intention, darkness is an argument.

[00:03:56]It says the subject must carry everything.

[00:04:02]The subject becomes its own world.

[00:04:06]It creates what Penn called  psychological intensity.

[00:04:12]The feeling that what you  are seeing is not a document.

[00:04:18]It is a confrontation.

[00:04:20]Penn wrote: a good photograph communicates a fact, touches the heart, and leaves the viewer  a changed person for having seen it.

[00:04:35]Darkness removes every excuse for a weak image.

[00:04:41]There is nowhere to hide.

[00:04:44]The photograph either has  presence, or it has nothing.

[00:04:50]That is the philosophy that guides my work.

[00:04:55]When I photograph against darkness,  whether it is the geometry of a building, the presence of a body, or the silence  of a space that once held something, I am making the same argument Penn made.

[00:05:12]That what is essential does not need decoration.

[00:05:17]That a fully illuminated subject against darkness speaks more clearly than any  narrative context, any code.

[00:05:29]My images are not meant to fit above a sofa.

[00:05:34]They are not decorations.

[00:05:36]They are confrontations, designed to endure.

[00:05:43]To feel, five years from now,  exactly as they feel today.

[00:05:50]Penn understood this.

[00:05:52]The most powerful photographs are not  the ones that show you everything.

[00:05:59]They are the ones that show you one  thing and make you unable to look away.
